This is one of my favourite japanese restaurant when comes to craving for delicious crispy pork cutlets. Here at Tonkichi, the portion served are quite generous and they used very premium quality japanese rice which are really tasty and fragrant. There are also free flow serving of cabbages to go along with your main course. If you are quite a small eater, you may want to share your main course with a friend as you can still share the free flow of cabbage and japanese rice with him or her too

Moreover, there are also generous amount of sliced hams, crunchy sliced cucumbers and carrot in it which make it even more fragrant and tastier. The portion is also quite generous and the price is reasonable.

We were wondering around Suntec City on a weekday evening, surprised by how empty most restaurants were. A certain craving for pork led us to Tonkichi, owned and operated by the Pokka group, which also has the Domani and Rive Gauche brand under its fold. And to think I only associated Pokka with their namesake line of drinks!

Tonkichi is one of the many restaurants that surround the fountain of wealth at the basement of Suntec City. Occupying a reasonably large space, the restaurant's decor is simple and definitely catered to the masses.

My initial plan was to order the Kurobuta Hire Katsu but they were out of it so I had to settle for the Kuro Cheese Katsu, which turned out to be a mistake. Sure, the katsu was nicely breaded and deep fried without coming across as overly oily, but being minced up meant that the texture was left wanting. To me, mincing kurobuta up is akin to mincing wagyu beef up to make patties - a total waste. Not even the very elastic cheese could save this dish.

On the contrary, I thought that this "normal" pork (and prawn) dish fared a great deal better than its more illustrious cousin. The pork was tender, juicy and nicely breaded without the oily residue. Personally I preferred the prawns though, which were relatively large and bursting with natural sweetness that there was no need for any tartar sauce to give it taste.

I see promise in Tonkichi's food. And at about $50 for 2 pax , it would be a great place to have a nice tonkatsu dinner without bursting your wallet. Service was good and I'll be sure not to order any minced pork tonkatsu or the likes.

Tonkichi Japanese Restaurant for a nice dinner out with my ex classmates. My favourite order is the special crab cake! The batter was totally thoroughly coated and was toasted till very crispy yet and tasty. The middle of the cake is very soft and moist and is literally oozing with its yummy and creamy crab meat!

Ume Chicken Katsu set at $26.90++ consisted of:
Appetizer: a piece of cold tofu with kazu.
Mini cold soba served with wasabi and white grated radish, texture of soba so good that it's really heavenly
Well breaded chicken cultets deep fried to very crunchy and topped with very nice japanese ume sauce.
Chawan mushi is one of the best as its so smooth, rich in stock and japanese rice is cooked just nice texture.
Dobinmushi serves in a ceramic pot that looks like miniature kettle with a drinking cup that sits on top and a slice of lime.

Tonkichi, by the Pokka Food group, has been making news for its fried pork set meals. And with several outlets at Lido, Takashimaya, Orchard Central, Tampines Mall and Suntec City among others, we found ourselves conveniently having lunch at its Suntec City branch. Here's our take on the slightly above average Japanese restaurant.

THE FOOD:
First came the restaurant's signature dish: a delicious and freshly-fried hire and rosu (pork) set ($24.90), which comes with miso soup, rice and a small salad. The breadcrumbs-coated meat looked real thick but was tender and soft in the inside – easy to chew and cut into smaller pieces.

But we discovered something even better: the fried oyster equivalent is just excellent. Crispy on the outside and soft (or partially raw) in the inside; oyster-lovers should really try this.

We were also craving for curry so we ordered an ala carte curry ($6.90) as well as a chawanmushi ($3.50 with a set, $5.50 without a set). The curry and chawanmushi wasn't spectacular but neither were they bad.

Ramen is also available but I would advise diners against it. Tonkichi's ramen was too oily, its ni-tamago (soft boiled egg) was over cooked and the pork broth was way too salty with a strange pungent pork taste.

What would make a typical male return is this: unknown to many, the Japanese rice and salad with sesame dressing comes free flow! Ideal for the big eaters. But in all, the fried stuff is great but anything else is best left for other Japanese restaurants.

THE MOOD:

Tonkichi is a great lunch choice for busy office workers. There was no need for queuing during lunch hours as the restaurant – part of the roundabout basement – occupies a pretty large area. The decor is simple and looks as if it's catered for the mass. Service is fairly fast and attentive as well.

Really love Tonkichi Japanese food, the queue is always so long. But I found that Suntec outlet is not that crowded. And most importantly, suntec outlet has special promotion with Standard Chartered Bank, 15% off total bill using Standard Chartered card, but this promotion is only valid til end of this year, its actually a one year promotion but ending soon. Sad.Of course, the standard and quality of the food there is good and delicious! You can try most of the set. They are all equally oiishi.
