Signature Dishes
Thanks to social media, i discovered this place though my friend's instagram. It's not a very big place when i arrived but luckily they take reservations so i can secure a table. I was quite impressed with the variety when i was looking through the menu. I'm sure there's something for everyone! There was 2 items which we ordered for sharing - Chwee Kway and Sambal Kang Kong. Chwee Kway is decent, nothing too special. For the kang kong, it was way to spicy (i love spicy food). Next will be the various main course that we each of us ordered. Seafood Hor Fun - My 5th aunt had this and according to her feedback, it's one of the better hor fun that she had so far. Black Pepper Steak Rice - My 4th aunt's hubby had this and i tried a small piece and it's yummy! It has a very nice crunchy texture which i like it very much with the sauce. I may want to try this for my next visit but i will ask if can replace the rice with more fries. Hee!Seafood Tom Yum Noodles Soup - I had this and it's really not bad. Quite a generous portion and soup base was pretty good. But i was sweating due to lack of aircon from where i was sitting. Will aim for the aircon seats if i know i be having hot soupy food. Bak Kut Teh - Took a sip of this and the soup broth is nice! For soup lovers, this is something you can consider having! Baked Rice - Fragrant fried rice is awaiting underneath the yummy layers of cheese! I must say it has some wok hei flavor to it and it's a great combination! Overall it's a place i will strongly recommend to anyone who is going for vegetarian food.

Vegetarian Express Café is a small space located at level 2 of Heartland Mall in Kovan. I felt that there aren’t many options that doesn’t include mock meat (which I usually don’t eat) and for the type of dishes that were served, it was on the pricier side. For instance, a simple meal with a dish of vegetable could easily cost more than $10. Therefore, my attention went straight to the cheaper single person set dishes. Also, a thing to note is that the place is not entirely vegan friendly, as cheese is being used for some of the dishes (like spaghetti). The wait for the food to be served wasn’t too long and the presentation of food was good. However, upon first glance, I knew it would not be enough for me. The monkey head mushroom rice was decent tasting, but the portions and the taste weren’t good enough, to me, to justify its price. The vegetable fried rice was a regrettable choice and a dish I definitely won’t recommend. There simply weren’t enough ingredients to go with the oily, funny tasting rice. The fact that the table height was too low did not help improve the overall experience. In all, despite the limited options around the Kovan area, I doubt I’ll go back anytime soon, unless I’m in a rush for time and is in need for a quick takeaway meal. As I venture to other vegetarian/vegan options, I look forward to more vegetarian outlets in the areaFor menu and pictures, feel free to visit http://smilesoftheheart.wordpress.com/2013/10/30/vegetarian-express-cafe/

I came across this place that offers vegetarian food in Heartland Mall. there were lots of mock meat such as fish, chicken, etc. I ordered the ‘cod-fish’ and it really looked like the real thing. As for the fish ‘meat’ itself, it was made of tofu and the skin made of some type of fungus. It was pretty good, although a little too salty. Also ordered a mixed vegetable dish that came with lots of different varieties of vegetables. Prices are relatively affordable with the ‘cod fish’ going for around $8 and the mixed vegetables costs around $6.
