I’ve always wanted to visit Wan He Lou to try their famous Lobster Porridge so when Amex had its 30licious promotion last November, I made a reservation right away. On a side note, I do hope that Amex 30licious promo will continue, so we foodies will have something else to look forward to apart from Restaurant Week.

Located in the heart of Jalan Besar, Wan He Lou’s surroundings is rather run down. Thankfully the restaurant itself is presentable and clean. Service was sometimes non-existent (as all the staff went to the kitchen) but their friendly demeanor made up for this.
Wan He Lou was well-prepared for the promotion; our dishes arrived shortly after we finished munching on the addictive Wasabi Macadamia Nuts.
Chef Style Smoked Duck did a good job of whetting our appetite with its engaging balance of sweet and savory. This could have been better of the meat was more tender.

Wan He Lou Golden Seafood “Pot Sticker” was nicely pan-fried, with crisp skin encasing juicy seafood and vegetable dumpling.

Honey Tangy Pork Choplets were too tough for our liking.

The Green Dragon Vegetables were caught us by surprise. The greens were sweet, succulent and crunchy. We certainly didn’t expect this humble vegetable dish to so enticing!

The Signature Lobster Porridge is prepared Teochew style. There’s no doubt the delectable broth was the star; the robust umami soup warmed our tummies and souls. The rice was cooked till comfortingly soft, infused with the broth’s flavors. Unfortunately, the crustacean itself was bland and boring.

We ended our meal on a sweet note with Black Glutinous Rice with Yam Ice Cream.

Overall, we felt the food was alright and the standard was average. Wan He Lou also offers wide variety of Asian classics and favorites at reasonable prices, making it a suitable venue for family gatherings.

Fresh Vegetable Juice - $3.50

I know, this vibrant shade of green with almost half the glass of 'pulpy remains' aren't exactly the most appealing drink you'll find. But believe me, this is the yummiest green drink you can ever find. Oyhz loved it so much, she went for a second one!

A yummy blend of pineapples, sour plums and cai xin, you'll actually taste the pineapples and sour plums in spite of the strong green colour. A really icy refreshing drink that tickled my tastebuds and boosted my appetite.

Each piece of the lotus is sliced till nearly paper thin, deep fried till golden brown and then generously coated in salted egg. If you're a fan of both fried lotus chips AND salted egg yolk flavour, you definitely have to order this! This dish is more of a light snack instead of a main dish and I strongly recommend that you try to finish it up as soon as it gets served, for as the dish gets cold, it loses some of its crispiness as well.

If you're still a stranger to kurobuta, it's actually Japanese for Black (kuro) Pork (buta). The main reason why kurobuta is much more 'raved' and popular as compared to their pink counterparts is due to the fact that the meat is actually much more tender and has very much less of the commonly hated (in individuals who doesn't enjoy eating pork) 'pork smell'.

I really love this dish, even though I myself is also a pork-hater, for the meat is really tender and it has a savoury-sweet flavour, a perfect dish to go with a bowl of piping hot rice!

I know, $9.90 for such a small servings of vegetables sounds kind of pricey. But this is actually not just any vegetables you can find in the supermarket. These Qing Long Cai are specially brought in from Cameron Highlands, and grown in limited sunlight by having them covered in nylon nettings after their first cut at about 6th week's growth.

They look a lot like garlic chives, but is crunchier, sweeter and more succulent in taste. It does have a mild 'typical chive smell', but I didn't taste the distintive 'chive taste' as I ate these greens. Perhaps the dried shrimps have masked the dreaded 'chive taste', or it's just how the Qing Long Cai is supposed to be. Nontheless, the addition of dried shrimps really complemented this dish really well. The strong salty flavour of the dried shrimps really brought out the crisp sweetness of the greens and the perfect combination of both sweet and savoury taste just made this vegetable a must try of the restaurant.

Yup, there's 5 big fat Hokaiddo scallops you see there, drenched generously in sweet hawthorne sauce spiced up with cut chilli. I abosolutely loved the asparagus (yes, an asparagus-lover here). Unlike many other restaurants, which tend to mix young and old asparagus together, this entire plate only has young, tender asparagus that was cooked till just the right time to keep its soft crunch and natural sweetness, yet absorb enough of the hawthorne sauce's flavour. Sounds complicated, eh? Well, you just have to try them out for yourselves.

And finally, how can we miss out Wan He Lou's specialty?

And the first thing that the server did while serving us the porridge was to remove all the lobsters from the hot porridge onto separate plates so as to prevent the lobsters from getting overcooked.

And as you can see, the porridge is in Teochew style with the rice still maintaining their grain forms and all the essence from the lobster locked into the thick, flavourful soup. I know the Cantonese congee is commonly more popular than the Teochew muay due to the perception that the congee is more flavourful and rich, having to cook the rice with all the ingredients for long hours. But tell you what, having been fed Teochew muay since young, I really do appreciate a good one when I find one.

This is definitely not those 'short-cut' kind at the hawker centres with just hot tasty soup poured over ready cooked rice and served straight away with the rice still tasteless and hard (at least it didn't taste like so to my tastebuds), but really cooked in the flavourful soup until the grains further soften, which allows flavour to develop not just in the soup but also in the rice itself. This is the kind of Teochew muay my mother and grandma has been cooking for me since young! But of course with only ikan billis or a few pieces of dried scallops, duh.

(The lobster is too big for my bowl... T.T)

The soup is simply awesome! This just has to be the best comforting food you can ever find that is rich yet not overpowering, and enhanced with the fresh sweetness of the lobster roe that complements the overall savoury flavour of the porridge. The soup was so delicious, that we kept refilling our bowls with the soup and leaving lots of the grains behind. The lobster was also fresh and well done, the meat thick and chewy from the freshness.

An award winning dish indeed!

The first dish being served was the Pan Fried Kurobuta Pork (SGD$14.90) - a very luscious, homely dish with succulent black pork meat, panfried in a lovely sauce - the meat was tender yet juicy. The decoration comprising of thin wedges of dragonfruit by the side was really pretty.

Next, we had the Crispy Lotus with Salted Egg (SGD$11.90) - paper thin slices of lotus deep fried with salted egg and basil leaves - we loved this as well. The lightly saccharine taste of lotus gave way to salted egg's richer taste, and the basil added hints of spiciness to the dish. Usually I dislike lotus because of its hard texture , but the lotus prepared this way was crispy (true to its name) , like eating lotus chips.

Finally, the Signature Lobster Porridge (SGD$39.90 for two) was being served, a large pot of broth, rice grains and large lobsters greeted us in a delightful sight. The anticipation was over as we took our first bite of the soup / porridge. We could not understand why reviews described it as being "rich in lobster flavor" and all similar phrases alike. Granted, the broth itself was flavorful and we could tell it was of superior stock, but the ginger taste obliterated other elements in the broth.

I am honoured to be invited by Street directory for this food review session. and Many thanks to Vincent from Wan He Lou for recommending to us the yummy dishes from the restaurant.
Wan He Lou is a well known household name for their signature lobster porridge despite they are only open for less than a year ( going to be a year soon). They have built their reputation with many fusion Chinese cuisines and aim to share the joy of enjoying food with you! A cosy set up restaurant that can sit approx 70 - 80 pax including 2 VIP rooms aim to serve you savoury dishes with sincerity. According to Vincent, they serve dishes across all dialect groups and their creative chef will experiment with new dishes from time to time. So fret not, new items are added to the menu to give you a different dining experience.
They also do offer customized menu for your special occasions which is especially good for those who wants to hold corporate events or having special guest. As they are pretty crowded during weekends, reservations are preferred.

so here are some of the highly recommended dishes by Vincent. they are also the most popular dishes among their customers.
Signature Lobster Porridge ~ something not to be missed! 2 pax (approx 350g) from $29.90 onwards

According to Vincent, it is very important to tke the lobster out of the porridge when it is served. The lobster will be overcooked and the meat will be too tough. They only use spiny lobster that is approx 300g each as the lobster meat will not be too tough and the meat will be very sweet and juicy. The preparation of the lobster porridge is broken down in to many stages which the most important one will be preparing the broth for the porridge! My first taste on the porridge is that broth brings a very refreshing and rich. The porridge is cooked in teo chew style which means you can taste the richness of the broth on its own! The lobster is well cooked and not tough. with the fragrant taste of ginger, it not only remove the fishy smell of the lobster, it also enhance the taste as well. Thumbs up for this dish!

A wonderful snack that is still crispy even when it is cold. According to Vincent, the preparation time for this dish is very long especially for the lotus. The smell of this dish is so overwhelming that you can smell it from a far distance. It is cooked with salted egg ( just like salted egg prawn) , sprinkly with curry leaves. This dish is so addictive that i couldn't stop eating it! Thumbs up for this dish too!

i was quite sceptical on how good this drink will be especially when Vincent introduce the ingredients of it. but to my surprise, this drink taste heavenly. the after taste is very refreshing and cooling. It gives a cooling sensation every single sip lol. It is also very appetizing too!

Not many restaurant offers the option of how you want your cod fish to be cooked, seriously. They are either black pepper or steam or deep fried. But here, they provide you the option of how you want it to be! How nice! Personally i love this dish too! the fish is very crispy despite it is covered with sauce. it is extremely fresh and according to Vincent, they only use premium ingredients in all the cuisines! Perfect dish to go with a plain bowl of rice!
Vincent also took this chance to remember two new dishes to us. Salt Pepper San Yao ( also known as huai san) and also Prawn ball with aloe vera and Osmanthus.

Honestly speaking, my mum always cook san yao soup but not deep fried them and this is my first time tasting this dish. This dish is very special as San yao is quite tasteless and you use the salt and pepper to bring out the flavor of this dish. It is very crispy both inside and outside. Personally i quite like this dish too!

The prawns are very fresh and the texture is very good. So you can see that the chef actually control "the fire" very well to ensure that the prawns are not overcooked. However, the sauce may make the prawn loses a little crispiness on the outside (not sure if it is intentional but it is still as good). Also, the fragrant of the osmanthus brings this dish to another level! If you love osmanthus and aloe vera, you will like this dish.

Not to be missed Ala Carte Items:

If you know Wan He Lou, You would know their Signature Lobster Porridge, there is more than one lobster swimming inside the Lobster Porridge, and as mention that Wan He Lou is a Cantonese restaurant which means that their porridge is the rice + soup, and not congee.

Personally, I love congee, but I think that porridge also have their tasty side. Like this lobster porridge, where the rice could absorb the sweetness of the pumpkin soup, also the pumpkin soup isn't too thick of the pumpkin taste, it's more like suitable for the whole family, where the taste of even out and not mid nor robust.

Also, to prevent overcooked lobster, be sure to take it out from the soup first !

Signature Lobster Porridge - $29.90

The Robust Flavours:

If your taste buds prefer something more impact-ful, something more strong tasting, then these two dishes would be towards your liking.

1. Crispy Lotus

Personally I feel that if you love robust flavour, you would definitely love this dish ! It's kind of taste like the salted egg prawn, but instead of prawn, it's fried lotus ! Lotus gives a freshening taste while salted egg give out the salty taste, and when both come together, it mixed pretty well, even better than with the prawn !

However, after you keep eating it, you would sure want to order some water. As the strong taste will choked your throat and your mouth + throat will feel uncomfortable, with the leftover taste of this dish.

2. Pan Fried Kurobuta Pork:

This is my favorite dish ! The Pan Fried Kurobuta Pork is different from the usual pork you eat in the supermarket or other places. This meat is soooo much tender and with every bite, you can feel the layering texture of the meat. Together with the strong tasting gravy that allow you to feel both the strong, salty and thick gravy sauce with the tender and soft meat. Sounds like a perfect match uh ! Oh, the meat is still soft and tender, with a little crispy at the side of the meat, as it's pan fried !

First thing i had noticed upon stepping into this restaurant was the hanging lanterns. The marketing manager said that these lanterns were added to the interior decor at the final stage. We agreed that they set a complimentary mood for the otherwise incomplete setting; making the cuisine place look well presented enough to have corporate dinners, and yet cosy at the same time for family gatherings.

Was told that one of their most popular dishes, is the Signature Lobster Porridge(招牌龙虾粥).
Depending on your food intake capacity, this dish supposedly serves 2 pax. It consists of fresh succulent lobsters, porridge akin to teochew muey texture and a secret sauce that gave this dish its unique flavour and fragrance. A good comfort food in my opinion.

Another dish we had today was Seven Spice Pork Chop(七味汁猪仔扒) which tasted mildly peppered and rather fragrant. Unfortunately, i have never been a fan of porky pig so i ate this dish least.

This was followed by their Crispy Lotus with Salted Egg(咸蛋脆莲藕). I must say i truly enjoyed this dish. The lotus root..very thinly sliced and coated with salted egg yolk, the chef then fried them. Not oily nor too salty when touching the taste buds. It can be a healthier snack substitute for your regular potato chips or popcorn while sitting on the couch watching your favourite drama series.

Next, was the Green Dragon Vegetables(双味青龙) served in deep-fried and stir-fried variants. I enjoy vegetables in general so it was pleasing to see this being served as part of our lunch today. The deep-fried version tasted a little like fried seaweed in terms of texture, whereas the stir-fried one retained the freshness and mild crunchiness of fresh vegetables.

Caro Chicken Soup with Chinese Pear & Coconut(椰肉雪梨鸡汤) was the soup for today. Giving thanks to my cantonese upbringing, i adore soups, in particular double-boiled tonic soups. It was a cold day and this soup warmed my body, and nourished my health. The chicken used for this dish is fed with a secret but healthy diet. Resulting in a low cholesterol end product. The marketing manager said that this soup is recommended for people who are looking to 'clean' their lungs.

To welcome the season of hairy crabs, we shared 1 of their Authentic Shanghai Hairy Crab(大闸蟹). The crab we dissected had generous servings of crab roe and tasted rather creamy with intense seafood sweetness and fragrance.

Last but not least, i recommend their Fresh Vegetable Juice(新鲜蔬菜汁) which is refreshing without being too overpowered by the 'plant taste'. It consists of pineapple, sourplum and cai xin. Very appetising drink.

The restaurant has 2 rooms available should you prefer to dine in private, away from the dining crowd. The marketing manager was pleased to advise that there will not be extra charges incurred for the use of these rooms.

Located at the end of a stretch of shophouses at Maude road, Wan He Lou can be easily spotted with the orange shopfront and very distinctive Chinese lanterns. It's easily access via public transport with less than 3 minutes walk from Jalan Besar Road and about 10 minutes walk from Lavender MRT station. Upon stepping into the restaurant you will be greeted with 2 rows of round tables, several pictures of the restaurant's signature dishes and chinese lanterns. Although the renovation is keep to the minimal, the restaurant gives people a very cosy and welcoming feel. On top of that, for people who prefer more privacy, Wan He Lou also has 2 private rooms with 7~8 people seating available. =)

We were first served with Fresh Vegetable Juice(新鲜蔬菜汁, $3) which consisted of pineapple, cai xin and sour plum. Although the colour of the drink doesn't look as delicious as it taste, I would highly recommend this thirst quencher as it is more inclined to the sour plum and pineapple taste that leaves no vegetable aftertaste at all. So let's drink this healthy drink and let the body benefits from its goodness!

Signature Lobster Porridge(招牌龙虾粥, $29.90) is one of the dish that you should not miss when you come to Wan He Lou. Not only is the lobster served fat, fresh and juicy, the porridge is also different from the regular porridge that you have from most of the porridge stalls. The cooking method should belong more to the teochew style instead of the cantonese style as you can still taste grains of rice while having the porridge. On top of that, using some special ingredient to cook the stock, the porridge has retained some natural sweetness. Thus I recommend this hearty & luxurious comfort food especially during rainy days.

The next dish that we had was Green Dragon veggie cooked in two ways(双味青龙菜, $9.90). Personally I find the green dragon very unique as this is the first time I have came across this vegetable. According to the boss, this vegetable is directly imported from Cameron highlands. For anybody who has been to Cameron Highlands, I am sure you are aware of how sweet the vegetables are due to their perfect growing environment. Personally I like the stir-fried version rather than the deep fried version of the green dragon vegetable as the stir-fried ones retained the vegetable's natural sweetness.

Crispy Lotus with Salted Egg(咸蛋脆莲藕, $11.90) was one of the highlight of the luncheon. Not only is the lotus roots being sliced very thinly, it was well coated with the salted egg yolk. The end product is a plate of tasty and crispy lotus roots that not only hit the Umami spot, it left you craving for more!!

Seven Spice Pork Chop(七味汁猪仔扒, $14.90) is the newly invented dish by the chef. The pork chops are coated in a special formulated sauce which has a tinge of peppery taste. However this is the dish that I least like as I am not a pork lover and I find the meat inclined more to the tough rather than tender side.

Caro Chicken Soup with Chinese Pear & Coconut(椰肉雪梨鸡汤, $19.90) is another of my favourite dish. According to the boss, the chicken used is one of the chicken breed with the least cholesterol due to the special diet that the chicken is feed with. On top of that, the soup is cooked under low heat over several hours with ingredients such as chinese pear and coconut which is suppose to be nourishing to the lung and beneficial to people who drink/ smoke or sleep late. The taste of the soup is kind of light with some herbal taste and there is a natural sweetness which i suppose is from the chinese pear. On top of that, the chicken meat is still very tender even after a few hours of cooking.

Currently is the hairy crab season and we had the Authentic Shanghai Hairy Crab [(150-170g ), 大闸蟹 , $26.90]and also a demo on how to eat the crab. Personally I feel that the crab roe is creamier as compare to normal crab and also the fresh from the crab is finer and sweeter. Yummy

Overall it was a wonderful food tasting experience at Wan He Lou, food is a very subjective thing. Personally I feel that there are more hits than miss for Wan He Lou. And for a new establishment, most of the food served are considered very fresh and tasty. On top of that, service here is considered relatively attentive as well. Beside having no GST or service charge, I feel that the price tagged with the food is very affordable and reasonable. Thus I would come back here to try other dishes on their menu.

I was craving for chinese food but didn't want any typical chains, so I found this place near lavender which has an appetizing menu, and made a special trip down. They were having some facebook promotion that time and we got 2 servings of 7 spices soft shell crab for free - they were good and crispy, but the spices were neither here nor there, seemed like a mixture of chilli flakes, sesame seeds, but the whole dish was passable. We also had their must-try salted egg lotus root ($12) - which was

We also had their must-try salted egg lotus root ($12) - which was my favourite of all; too salty when eating it on its own, but is extremely addictive, especially if you are a fan of salted egg. They recommended the 7 spices pork chop ($14) which we obliged, and it's good and very well marinated. Lastly we got the tofu with crab meat gravy ($13); really loved the generous serving of crab meat and the gravy wasn't overly salty; but we didn't quite like the tofu which tasted a little unconventional.

Love this restaurant layout as it is so traditional with lots of old traditional furnishing in it. I have ordered their all-time popular dish:Lobster porridge for my lunch. At $29.90 per bowl, this yummy porridge is filled with thick fragrant lobster stock and the lobster meat is very fresh and sweet. The portion is also quite generous and I feel so full after completing this bowl of porridge. Staffs are friendly as well.

Pan Fried Garoupa Fish with Pomelo Sauce (S$19.90/ S$32.90)
Though the name indicates 'Pomelo', the sauce ultimately taste more like mango sauce instead. Comes with real mango and dragonfruit bits, the sauce promises a more unique taste for this dish. Besides, with the sour nature that comes with the 'Pomelo' sauce, you will probably find yourself picking up the crispy fried chicken without stopping!

Crispy Seafood Delight and Otah with crepe (S$17.90)
This was one of my favourite for the mayonnaise complements the crispy crepe that wraps that fried otah underneath. Otah was not spicy at all so people who can't take spicy can enjoy this with a peace of mind.

Crispy Lotus with Salted Egg
On the flipside, the Crispy Lotus faired better. Not comparing an apple with an orange, but comparing in terms of the uniqueness of the dish. Lotus in a soup, I've certainly tried before. But definitely not fried lotus slices drizzled with salted egg seasonings. Surprisingly, the seasonings do not cause a very salty taste, so I guess it's quite a good choice for families with elderly.

Stir-fried French Bean with Dried Shrimp
Frankly, there isn't anything special about this, though I admit I was a victim of the dried shrimp because they taste so addictive. Salty though!

Fried prawn in Shan Zha Sauce
Shan Zha (山楂) itself meant something sour. This whole juicy prawn that comes with shan zha sauce was honestly an irresistible one, especially when prawns are cut open for easy shell-removing. It was a slight pity though cause the flesh did not really lock in the sauce flavour.

Lobster porridge ($29.90 for 2 pax approx)

The one that everyone was looking forward to was none other than the Signature Lobster Porridge. You can even spot several posters promoting their signature dish hanging on their walls. Nonetheless, the texture of the lobster was there for its chewy and succulent meat.

Of course, the all time signature dish was the Lobster Porridge (Good for 2 pax) - $29.90. Though the lobster meat was isolated from the porridge, the yellow broth enhanced with lobster roe had hints of freshness from the sea. It does lack a bit of peppery kick, but on the very least it did not taste full of MSG.

The Crispy Lotus in Salted Egg Yolk - $10.90, with doses of chilli padi made a very good dish to go along with rice, or even a snack if you have high tolerance of salt. The extra bits of aromatic curry leaves were a bonus.

My favourite dish was the Stir Fry French Beans - $8.90. It might be a common dish in many restaurants but skills and experience are required to execute it well. What made this dish stood out were the super fragrant dried shrimps, garlic nibs and chilli padi. It actually had milky scents that reminded me of cereal prawn!

Not all the dishes served are perfect but this place is certainly promising enough for a casual gathering with family or friends. Apart from the Lobster porridge, the Crispy Lotus in Salted Egg Yolk and the Stir fried French beans are dishes not to be missed.

Understandably, the restaurant is still at its experimental stage. Given more time, I'm sure the experienced chefs will be able to neat out the minor details and deliver consistent Chinese fare.

Pan Fried Garoupa Fish with Pomelo Sauce (Small - $19.90, Medium - $32.90)

Stir Fried French Bean with Dried Shrimp
This crunchy French Beans is nice but a little salty for me, I would suggest to complement with the steamed rice.

Soya Bean Curd w Crab Meat in Yellow Gravy
By visually looking at the smooth texture of the soya bean curd with its gentle wobble as it placed on the table, I can't wait to try the dish. The silkiness of the soya bean curd melts in the mouth and slides down the throat. In addition, the yellow gravy has a pleasant savoury flavour that pleases any palate.

San Zan Sauce Prawn
Over at Wan He Lou, you can get to choose the cooking method for the prawns such as Mandrain Orange Thousand Island sauce, Butter cereal, Pan Fried Shrimps, Superior Soy Sauce, Drunken Style, Salt and Pepper. Not forgetting, San Zan Sauce that was being recommended for us. A sweet and slight plum flavour with a tinge of spicy taste.

Lobster Porridge
2 pax (approximately) from $29.90
The lobster meat itself was firm to bite and the natural goodness of the lobster makes the soup and porridge extremely tasty and nice.
