Ambience at Wheeler's Yard cafe is laid-back and rustic, with a retro and bicycle themed decor. Long, sturdy, communal wooden tables are surrounded by an eclectic mix of retro / nostalgic chairs. Magazines and music boxes are set on the tables, beside bicycle parts or whole bicycles. The counter is surrounded by old-school / olden items such as biscuit tins, while the rough brick wall is adorned with bicycle frames. Very photo-worthy, visually exciting and appealing. Also makes the place great for chilling!

Even the surrounding area has interesting spots. The workshop has bicycle / cycling related products and items of interest, the yard behind has their trailer and a lush green hedge wall, the front has the iconic Wheeler's Yard blue door. They even have benches that double as a waiting area should the cafe be crowded!

Service at Wheeler's Yard is partial self-service. Ordering and payment is done over the counter, as is collection of order, but if you're lucky and the cafe isn't crowded, staff may serve orders to your table. Otherwise, everything is self-service. Staff are friendly and can engage if necessary, though mostly they hang around in the background. The menu has apt descriptions of dishes, so you won't even need to ask them questions. Very minimal interaction, little service required, hence, they practise tipping here.

Food at Wheeler's Yard is mostly Western style, influenced by American, British, and Italian cuisine, with some Asian influence as well, such as Indonesian, Chinese, or Singaporean. Generally, taste of food here is decent to above average, but nothing so special that you should go out of your way for. Portions are large, and can be shared. Prices at Wheeler's Yard are typical of a high-end cafe, budget about SGD $32 per person for a meal here.

The Hot Chocolate (SGD $6) here is among the better ones I've had, rich and deep with pronounced chocolate flavour. Warm and comforting, yet not too sweet. Love the little retro gem biscuits on the side!

The Or Lu Lu Sotong (SGD $16.90) features large chunks of fresh calamari squid, coated in a thin, crisp Asian spice and flour batter, and served in a thick, dark, sweet Indonesian kecap manis / black sweet soy sauce, and spring onions. Portion is large enough to share. I really enjoyed this, would order again!

The Salmon Royale (SGD $18.90) has 2 lovely poached eggs over arugula / wild rocket leaves, large slices of smoked salmon, all on nicely toasted English muffins. Cut into the eggs and watch the yolk ooze out! Decent enough as a dish, and I like the home made Hollandaise sauce, which is thick and creamy. I also thought the touch of adding sweet slices of peach to the salad on the side is a good idea!

The Beau had the Spaghetti Carbonara (SGD$14.90) which was a rather huge portion, and had the standard shards of ham and creamy sauce. The pasta was a little soggy, and the cream was too rich in this case - after a few bites, it got kind of difficult to go on (unless we poured loads of Tabasco sauce or chilli flakes over it).

We also tried the Horlicks Tart (SGD$5.50) - while the crust was nice in a crunchy manner, the flavor was lackluster in Horlicks' maltese aroma. There was a sticky layer inside the sweet tart that tasted like a suspicious cross between Horlicks and caramel. Well, it was our first Horlicks tart, so we couldnt really comment much, other than that the crust was nice and the tart was sweet with sticky fillings.

I was deciding between Soursop Meringue Tart ($7.50) and Horlicks Tart ($7.90) as both sound more interesting than the commonly available fruit and chocolate tarts. Since hubby decided to "abandon" me by not sharing the load of the dessert with me, I went ahead to order the Soursop Meringue Tart which I know he will not like it being a boring and unadventurous eater. >.<

Guess what? I loved it and I thought it was the best order of the day! The tart was crispy & hard, just the way I like the crust to be. The soursop filling was refreshing yet not overpowering. This is definitely something that I will order again. =)

As you know, Wheeler's yard is a bike workshop concept with an incorporation of a cafe.

We followed the arrows leading us to the cafe and saw a neat row of red old retro bicycles lined up along the walkway, leading us into the merchandise.

It was Sunday morning and as I entered into the cafe, I was amazed by the amount of decorations hanging here and there. There were bikes mounted on the tables as well as hanging onto the walls, likewise for those colorful helmets.

While I heard so many people were raving about this place, I would say their food is average and expensive.

Grilled chicken was one of the recommended mains. It was boneless with hints of cajun spice, paired with sauteed greens and creamy mash.

Hum Bao Bao is another recommended dish on its menu, when translated from Mandarin, it actually means hamburger. It consists of double homemade beef patties, stacked with bacons, cheddar cheese, fresh lettuce, tomato and topped with caramelized onions.

Buns were pillow soft in the inside and tanned on its crust with black sesame seeds. Though the patties may be juicy but taste was all lacking. Thick cut fries make up part of the dish, however, the oil used give out a smell that hint us that it had been overused.

All in all, I felt that if you want a change in the usual dining
experiences, then this would be a good place and chance. However, if you
are here for food and have high expectations, then this is gonna be
disappointing.

Wheeler's Yard's menu may not have an extensive food items, but each of them does seem interesting enough to land you in an indecisive mode! Menu board is available near the indoor entrance, and you are welcome to grab one and head back to your table for "discussion".
Ham & Cheese Panini ($16.90) with garden salad and fries. If you are a person who does not prefer cheesy food, Ham & Cheese Panini should not be an option then. But for those cheesy peeps like me, I am loving it! I also love their fries, because it is not the skinny ones!
Otah Burger ($16.90). Wheeler's yard uses mackerel fish patty with cheddar cheese, lettuce and tomato, stacked in between brioche buns and a side portion of fries. Brioche bun is about an adult palm size, which is bigger than usual burgers. Strong fish-flavored otah taste that I can't stop for another bite.
If the usual cafe drinks are too mainstream for you, they do have a bar-like counter at the entrance of the outdoor seating. If you are dropping here at night, you might be able to catch a different side of Wheeler's Yard, where drinkers and cyclists-alike gather for a chat.
Seems like a place ideal for pro-cyclists to drop-in for some filling food and purchasing add-on for their bicycles before heading back to track. I love how spacious it looks, and the planning put into the decoration.
I have definitely heard of how bad their food taste and serving time is pretty ridiculous. Perhaps efficiency and improvements have been injected into the cafe, my waiting time was less than 15 minutes on a crowded weekend morning where I queued for an estimated of 5-10 minutes to have my food ordered, but food is definitely a thumbs!

The Beau had an Iced Mocha (SGD$7.00), since he was driving. I took a couple of sips - even though there was no visible chocolate / hot fudge sauce in the drink itself, the chocolate flavor was distinctive and the drink was lovely.

Overall, it was a fun-loving and relaxing place for hanging out at or simply kicking one's heels back. It was a weekend, and there were a lot of young people as well as families and businessmen types all having fun here laughing, drinking and eating; it was a casual but happy environment . I will definitely be back to try more of their desserts.

Heard of this cafe for ages, and it is not far from where I reside, so I decided to pop by for brunch after running some errands on a weekend morning.

Located amongst industrial office buildings and warehouses along the Balestier area, this cafe looks so non-discreet from the outside. It is a bicycle cafe for bikers to rest, get their bicycling gears and enjoy a lovely meal / coffee before heading for the roads again.

Not a cyclist (I cannot cycle, lol), but I did appreciate being able to see the different types of bicycles mounted / strewn around the cafe with huge capacity.

For the mains, I had a Scrambled Eggs with Smoked Salmon set (SGD$18.90) - consisting of bouncy smoked salmon, fresh greens with lots of halved cherry tomatoes, buttery scrambled eggs that were smooth as tofu, and golden toast which was crispy. It was a hearty indulgence.

For desserts, I chose the Soursop Tart (SGD$7.50) - sweet cream atop crunchy pastry crust, containing luscious soursop paste within. I hadn't expected the soursop taste to be distinctive, but it broke through the surface of cream and pastry to form an impression of its own, boldly letting its delicious flavor assault the palate pleasantly.
Overall, the dining experience was nice and simply relaxing - the perfect spot for non cyclists to chill out at over chatter or a good book.

the bike thing doesnt interest most of the cafe goers i would think....placing bikes on the table...may make one wonder are the wheels clean....cause u are eating just next to it.

Food - its decent enough. nice fries and coffee. didnt have a chance to try the desserts.
Expect to pay at least $20/pax for main and a drink

There’s bicycle statues on some of the bigger tables and safety helmets hung on the wall as part of the decorations. When you step into the cafe interior, it gives you the feeling that you’re somewhere out of Singapore for a moment. It’s spacious, with mixture of wooden fixtures and comfy sofa, not a typical cafe you’ll commonly seen in singapore. Also, there were a few art students doing their sketching and drawings of the surroundings there.
But all the pretty cool decorations aside, the food is nothing worth raving about. It’s a total disappointment.

There’s a decent variety of food ranging from starters, mains, pasta, weekend brunch, coffee etc. For one the price are not that cheap. So at least i will expect something decent for that price. But sadly, it’s otherwise.

Cheese Fries ($9.90): Chef recommendation. but it just feel normal or worse then normal. It’s just cheese and fries right, how bad can it be right. It get soggy in no time, and just feel gelat after eating awhile.

Smoked Salmon and Scrambled Eggs ($18.90): It’s served on toast with a garden salad. Salmon is heavily smoked with salt, no other taste other than being salty. Scrambled egg that tasted milky and plain. It obvious that some taste is missing. Bread is not toasted either. Usually bread should be slightly toasted to complement the whole dish.

So overall, its a place worth going for the ambience but definitely not for the food.

Boy! Was I glad I decided to take the path less travelled! The Ribeye steak was delicious (I had it medium done)! Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about their burgers!

My friend asked the cashier, "what's good here?"
She replied, "up to you lor"
Unsatisfied with the answer I chimed in, "but what would you recommend?"
She asked, "the burger"
He decided to go with her recommendation but we weren't impressed. The meat was subpar. It tasted kinda chewy and over marinated... kinda like cheap sausage meat grounded into a patty? Either she has poor taste or she gave him really bad information.

Coffee-wise, I really didn't think that they were as good as Nylon etc. Passable but it wasn't impressive.

Service was also rather slow that day. My steak came out on time but my friends' food didn't.

Ambiance-wise, Wheeler is unbeatable! A beautiful hipster cafe! I love the concept and the deco. Not so much the location and the parking. There's barely enough lots to fit 5% of the customers. They only have 4 lots out front. All 4 were taken when we arrived. Plus, the remote location (an industrial like area) didn't really help because it wasn't very accessible via public transportation so I wished they had more parking space!

The Big Breakfast ($14.90) is served with a wholemeal bread toast, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, hashbrown & garden salad. This is way better than the coffee although not overwhelming as well. The toast was rather nicely toasted and crusty. The scrambled eggs are nice. The bacon is great. The sausages and the hashbrown are average. The garden salad is also not too bad. In overall, this could have been better.

If you live or is around the Balestier area, this place should be considered to have your meal (for its ambience; do not expect too much from the food and drinks)
