I first came across Eighteen Chefs five years ago and was quite intrigued by its concept of hiring ex-convicts. While some may think that hiring ex-convicts may compromise service standards, but I must say that on all my visits to Eighteen Chefs (both Tiong Bahru and Cineleisure's branches), the service was polite, efficient and fuss-free. Most of the crowd is quite young - possibly mostly students due to the very value-for-money student promotion. I really like this place because it has a casual and comfortable setting. However, the noise level of the restaurant is quite high and you have to shout to get yourself heard. Not the most conducive for serious conversations or long heart-to-heart talks.

Decide what you want to eat and order at the counter - no service charge here!

One of the more eye-catching selections is the Heart Attack Fried Rice ($15.80 for one person serving, $28.80 for two persons serving). The picture below depicts the serving for two persons.

It was overall an okay dish for me. The garlic fried rice was rather tasty and savoury but the beef slices were a little too tough, tasteless and very oily. The oil was literally dripping onto the chopping board... well which reminds me that the presentation of the dish was quite interesting - a redeeming factor.

On a separate occasion, I returned for a fourth visit to try the student promotion at $6.40 which included a Tomoto-based pasta with mushroom and their Iced Lemon Tea. Their pasta was very surprisingly much better than it looks! The sauce looks a little diluted here, but it was so flavourful and rich. The mushrooms were also springy and a perfect touch to the pasta. The pasta itself was cooked al dente and there was nothing at all to pick on for this dish. I enjoyed it a lot and the price was equally attractive...

One thing that I remembered from my first visit in 2008 was their Iced Lemon Tea which maintained its standards ever since. It somehow is much more fragrant than average and very refreshing.

Definitely coming back for seconds with suitable company.
