Had lunch at Sisaket yesterday, one would notice the bright yellow and red signboard at Maxwell Market..a clear indication of the stall owner's patriotism perhaps? The queues here are always long during lunchtime, this stall draws crowds and wins ardents fans from the region plus all over Singapore (That would be me..), but service is usually quite fast so fret not!I usually have an internal debate over whether I want to have the Pad Thai or the Basil Chicken. The egg is fried just the way I like it, the yolk is tinged with orange and looks like a sunrise (ha ha ha), it may be oily but it tasted really good when eaten with the sauce of the basil chicken. What would be very noteworthy, would be the rice. The rice is easy to miss -it's a staple in Asian food culture and eaten in a myriad of dishes but usually, when having rice outside as a one-dish meal, the quality of the grain usually falls short. Not in this case however, I enjoyed eating the rice very very much. It was grainy, not too moist and not overcooked. It has a fragrance of its own, adding character to the entire dish. The ubiquity of basil chicken dishes in the market easily shifts the focus to the quality of the basil chicken sauce, but Sisaket has taken their dish to the whole new level with their rice, cementing their position as one of the best hawker centre Thai food stalls.
You will want to try their Tom Yum Soup which really packs a punch, as well as their Pad Thai and Basil Chicken. The more adventurous palates will want to consider the Sour Papaya salad, but that's a bit too tart for me.
