Waffle time
Columbus Coffee Co.
2020-09-21
Decided to come here for dessert after a walk at Macritchie. Luckily we didn’t have to wait for a table. One look at the menu we decided on the earl grey caramel waffle. The waffle tasted as good as it looked. The waffle was moist and paired with the earl grey caramel (which was a little over powerless but the caramel) and ice cream was a great combination. Looking forward to my next visit to Columbus. …Read More

Good wine selection
Frenchie Wine Bar
2020-09-12
I’ve been here a few times now and the favourite items on the menu is the steak and chips and the large selection of wine. The menu is mainly small plates and around four mains. Overall the food is OK, I would prefer a few more mains but where Frenchie excels is the choice of wine and friendly atmosphere. And I almost forgot about the bread! …Read More

Five &2
2020-09-05
We planned to go else where but since we both finished work late and restaurants close at 10:30PM we decided to go someone close to home and ended up at Five&2 (forgot to ask the origin of the name). It was a shame we got there after 8PM and missed happy hour. We ordered wince, can’t remember which ones but it was good and for food I ordered the burger with fries, the Aglio Olio Seafood (no picture) and for dessert the chocolate lava cake. All food items were OK and matched my expectations of the establishment. On a not so hot night it’s nice to sit outside and enjoy the view of Pongol pond. It was my first time here and it won’t be the last. …Read More

Brunch
Five Oars Coffee Roasters
2020-09-05
My friend suggested we come to Five Oars after our weekly hike. As with most brunch places at the weekend we had to queue. Fortunately we got a table relatively quickly. I ordered the crab scramble which consisted of shredded crab on scramble egg, avocado, cherry tomatoes, feta cheese on sour dough toast with ebiko and furikake sprinkled on top. When the dish arrived the presentation was very good with ample scramble egg that was cooked well and ripe avocado. Overall the dish was OK but the crab meat was tasteless, dare I say it tasted like it was from a can. My friend had the build your own brunch lite (no photo), her feed back was that the brunch was good except the German Pork Bratwurst which didn’t wasn’t very good and ended up not finishing it. We both had black coffees which were good. Overall I liked the vibe of the place and will return to try other items on the menu in particular creme brûlée French toast. …Read More

Not so good but will be back
Nakajima Suisan Grilled Fish
2020-09-05
I had the day off so wandered into Orchard for lunch. I walked past Nakajima and noticed a queue, even though I don’t like queuing but since I was on leave I decided to give it a try. I ordered the Akauo Hiraki set which consisted of a piece of grilled Akauo, rice, tofu, radishes, miso soup and green tea. When the set arrived it looked very apprising. The fish nicely grilled and aroma from the miso soup. I tucked in and was disappointed, the fish didn’t have much taste and was overly salty. I am not sure this was because the fish was previously frozen or that the meat doesn’t have much taste. The plus point was the miso soup was very flavoursome and salad was fresh. Even though the fish wasn’t very good I did like the concept of the restaurant and will go back to try other items on the menu. …Read More

Pho or no?
So Pho (JEM)
2018-05-12
For me Pho is all about the broth, if it’s good the rest normally falls into place. I’ve not had a good Pho in awhile so I decide to check out the So Pho chain. The menu has most of the common Vietnamese dishes. I order the combo Pho with sliced beef, brisket and balls and also a Vietnamese drip coffee. The Pho arrives in no time along with the bean sprouts, chilli and lime. I add these to the bowl and then as with all Pho’s I eat I take the spoon/ladle and take a sip of the soup. And as expected it’s mediocre, it doesn’t have the Pho taste and is too salty. I say expected as I’ve come to terms that it’s going to be awhile till I find a good Pho. Overall the noodles, beef balls, brisket and sliced beef were also OK. As for portion size it’s average but I must say there was a generous amount of slice beef. The Vietnamese coffee was good. I’m going to give the taste a two due to the saltiness of the soup. For service I’ll give a four as the staff were attentive and smiling. If anyone has recommendations for Pho please let me know. …Read More

Not for the steak
SO France DUO
2018-05-12
I was looking forward to trying the steak at this place. Upon arrival I didn’t have to wait for a table, the service was quick and I ordered the ribeye steak (medium rare) with pepper sauce and a Merlot to pair. When the streak arrived it looked good with the fries, pot of ratatouille and pepper sauce. I start with the steak and was disappointed. The meat was a too chewy but the chips, ratatouille and Merlot was good. I don’t know about you but I generally have a high anticipation of steak and when it’s bad the disappointment is also higher. With chicken if it’s dry you can add more sauce to make it more palatable however with a steak it’s like torture down to the last bite. The decor and surroundings was nice and clean but the club music didn’t really match the mood. Even though the steak wasn’t as expected it doesn’t represent whether the overall food is good or bad as it was just bad cut of meat. The chips and ratatouille were the redeeming factors and is what determined that I will be returning to So France to try other items on the menu. …Read More

Disappointing
4 Fingers Crispy Chicken
2018-05-06
4 finger is usually busy when I pass by so I decide to find out what the fuss was all about. I order 6 pieces of the signature wingettes/drumettes with 2 hot and 4 soy garlic. I sat down with wireless pager device and after a few minutes my order was ready. Visually the wings looked OK. I take the hot sauce wing and take bite and find the sauce a little spicy for my palate. I then take the soy garlic flavoured and found this too salty. I will usually order fried chicken with with no sauce as I find the sauces can be overpowering which is exactly what it is at 4 fingers. The option for no sauce is not on the menu but this would not have made a difference as the I find the batter too chewy and not crispy enough. And as for the meat, it’s not that it was dry but it wasn’t juicy/moist enough. Overall this disappointing and won’t be returning. …Read More

Wild Honey
2018-04-16
Having seen the advertisements in Orchid for Wild Honey I just had to try it out. So I ask a friend for brunch to the branch in Scott’s Square. Looking at the varied menu I choose the Grilled Ruben. When it arrives the my mouth starts to water and it doesn’t disappoint. The pastrami, cheese, sauerkraut, dressing and crispy rye is very good. The chips could be better but that won’t stop me ordering this tasty sandwich again. …Read More

Crodo?
Da Paolo Gastronomia
2018-04-05
After visiting the dentist I go to the basement of Paragon to get my prescription. And on the way of the mall out I notice some goodies in a glass display which look like cronuts except the label read Crodo. So I order the one that looks the least sweet, the glazed crodo, yes I know my dentist wouldn’t approve. I get back to the office, I plate and cut the Crodo half which revealed a soft and layered inside. I take a bite and the pasty is soft, buttery and almost melts in your mouth! As anticipated it was a little too sweet but that didn’t take away how good this merge of two very different pastries tasted. I will definitely be back for another! …Read More

Grab and go
Paris Baguette
2018-03-27
Decide to grab breakfast from PB a this little shiny bacon sweet roll caught my eye, there is a chilli version however I didn’t think my stomach could handle heat in the morning. When back at the office I plate and cut the bacon roll, inside revealed a layer of pastry and rolled around egg and herbs. I take a bite of this delightful looking roll and my first response is that it’s a little too sweet. It is good but if the amount of honey was reduced and the bread thicker/more dense to complement the bacon and egg it would be a winner. And because it’s too sweet for my palate (yes I know it’s a sweet bacon roll) it drops down to a two star as I won’t be ordering it again. …Read More

Good brunch
Two Men Bagel House
2018-03-25
I wake up today craving a meaty brunch and the idea of a bagel pops into my head. A quick Google points me the direction of Two Men Bagel. I head over to the closest branch in Novena. The shop is located on the outside of the shopping centre with seating on the pavement. I look at the menu and there are two choices that fulfil my meaty requirement, the Primal (brisket) or Ribs, I choose the brisket as my substitute for a roast beef Sunday lunch. When I get to order my first choice of bagel the multigrain had run out so I choose the cheddar. After paying I realised the Primal already had cheddar which meant I was getting good dose of double cheese. So I sit down and wait for my order, the seating is on bar stools/table on the pavement or next to the open kitchen where you can see the fresh bagels being made. I didn’t have to wait long for my order and when it did, I opened the wrapping paper to reveal a chunky cheesy bagel with a generous portion of brisket, cheddar and pickle, I was in for a treat. The bagel was fresh, soft and cheesy, it wasn’t my first choice but did go well with the filling. The brisket was flavoursome, juicy and had small bits of fat which added to the flavour, this was all complimented by the sourness of the picked, cheddar cheese and BBQ sauce. I enjoyed every bite of this delicious bagel and was exactly what I was looking for. One comment on the bagel is that I generally prefer the dough to be a little more chewy but that’s a minor preference in what is a very good bagel. I will be returning to try the ribs! I’ve marked hygiene down for two reasons, even though the staff are quick at cleaning the tables, the cleaning isn’t thorough, from the picture you can see tissues and food on the floor which attracted pigeons. And secondly the bin was full. …Read More

J.Co Donuts & Coffee
2018-03-24
It suddenly started to down pour so I stopped in Raffles City for a coffee. I stumble across J.Co and order the Glazzy (glazed ring donut) and an Americano to balance the sweetness. The coffee was medium strength with a hint of sourness. The donut not overly sweet but I didn’t like the chewy texture of the dough. It’s OK but not to my taste so I probably won’t be coming again. As for the environment, the seating area was clean and staff helpful. …Read More

Too good to share
PAUL
2018-03-24
After the a lunch time gym session I walked past Paul’s and my legs just decided to stop and naturally I look at the delicious range of pastries, baguettes, etc. And suddenly my eyes stopped at the tart aux abricots. I order and pay for the tart and return to the office. I wait a time until there were less people in the office before I open the box. I do this otherwise I would have had to share. And this was a very good decision as when I did finally put the first piece into my mouth I just wanted to hide away and enjoy it to myself. The perfect combination of the light sweetness of the custard is balanced by the slight sourness of the apricots and all on top of a buttery and flaky pastry. This was perfectly complemented by a black coffee. …Read More

Fish or shape?
Long John Silver's
2018-03-24
Having grown up in the land that created fish and chips I quite often need a fix. Today I stumbled across Long John Slivers. Looking at the menu it narrowed down to the two piece fish combo or the two piece dory combo. When I asked the staff what was the difference between the two she replied one is a fish (dory) and the other is a shape, which made my decision easier, fish. The dory combo meal with fries and drink came very quickly and was hot. At first glance the chips didn’t look good very however when I did eat them they were nice and crunch, they tasted better than they looked. Only complaint is there should be a more. Now for the fish, the batter doesn’t quite have the same texture as the fish and chips from U.K. And the fish which was a good sized portion was little tough. Overall it just edged in at three stars as my fix for fish and fries (I’ve come to accept that it’s difficult to get chips in Asia) was just about satisfied. In addition to my complaint about the portion size of the fries is that the carton that the fish and fries came in was too small, there isn’t sufficient space to cut the fish. And on the subject of cutting the fish the plastic knife was too soft and kept on bending. This is the same in a lot of places and I guess instead of complaining I should carry with me a travel cutlery set which would more environmentally friendly. I marked hygiene as two as the tables even though wiped still has bits of food laying around. And also the floor had lots of shoe prints. …Read More
