Hokkien Prawn Mee Soup
Penang Street
2014-02-12
There is always long queue at Penang Street especially during lunch hours and despite the fact that they split over two dining areas, it is still not enough to cater for patrons who are looking forward to their food. I like the restaurant theme colour. It is so much like turquoise and it complements the vintage design of their dining table. There is a board that states their Top 10 Dishes and I had their Hokkien Prawn Mee Soup since having that crave. I must dismiss the statement made by a lady sitting beside that the prawn mee soup isn't nice. On the other hand, it actually suits my taste bud. What makes a prawn mee good in taste is the soup base. The soup is sweet and tasty. It seems like they used up many prawn heads to boil the pot of nice prawn soup. And you can find peeled prawns that are quite fresh, sliced hard-boiled egg, vegetables and fishcake, top with fried garlic. The vermicelli and yellow mee actually soak up the soup taste and it just perfect in overall. The price per bowl wasn't that flattering but worth the try. Also try their Home-Made Barley, choosing between cold or warm to beat the unpredictable weather out there.…Read More

Signature Chicken Pie
Don Your Personal Pie Club
2014-01-27
Was told that their pies are awesome and so I tried it myself. Had their Signature Chicken Pie for $6 and it is quite a huge portion, considering that I have a small appetite. A little expensive for a pie of such. The pastry itself is very flaky on the outside with a little crispiness and having to cut it in nice pieces takes a little skill. The stuffing within was good and generous. Just like any chicken puff from Delifrance but you get to taste a quarter of a hard-boiled egg together with the stuffing. It is served with aluminium foil which probably helps to maintain the temperature of the pastry. But it gets a little sick because of the big portion. However it definitely can fill your stomach through the next half of the day at work.…Read More

Prawn Noodles
Guang Tai
2013-11-22
What makes a bowl of prawn noodles taste good lies on the soup base that allows the noodles or beehoon to absorb the essence from it. Most of the time, the prawn heads are one of the many ingredients in the soup that contributes to the sweetness. Here at Guang Tai, it did met the expectation on the soup with a little greasy but the prawns failed to impress as they are not fresh and also overcooked. But with slices of fishcakes and vegetables, is a plus point. This stall is one of the oldest since this food centre opened more than a decade ago and the price has since increased from $2.00 to $3.00. They sell only Lor Mee (Braised noodles) and Prawn noodles only.…Read More

Malaysian style dinner
Madam Kwan's
2013-11-22
Nasi Bojari $18.90The waitress recommended us to try this. The achar was left out but sambal prawns is good and very appetizing. The drumstick is quite a big portion with tender texture of the meat. Love the skin. Tasty. As for the rice, quite norm but fragrance. Like Yang Zhou Fried Rice. Otak $15.90This is quite a thick piece in 8 cubes, cut unequally. It's nice and that aroma purges out with every bite. The strong taste of otah stays for awhile in your mouth. But you get a little sick because of the big portion plus the thickness of every cut cube. Claypot Seafood Beancurd $15.90The only reason why we ordered this is because we want a good balance of nutrients. Inside, you can find tofu, prawns, beans, cauliflowers, mushrooms and so on. Al I can say is well-cooked and the prawns are fresh. Nothing much to comment for a norm dish on the dining table.Ipoh Kway Teow Soup $11.90The minute it was served up to me, I regretted. So plain. Nothing appeals to me. The soup was bland. Prawns was a little overcooked as it tastes a little harden. Although I wanted something light, but I need something that can stir up my appetite. This has totally failed on me. Overall, it wasn't a good dinner yet pricey.…Read More

Baby Calamari Fritti Skewers $6.80 It reminds me of those squid heads that Old Chang Kee is selling. Nice, crispy and chewy. The deep-frying part is an important element which affects the overall taste.Funghi Alla Gamberi $9.20 - RecommendedThe photo didn't do justice to the food. Although it looks as if it has just mushrooms and prawns, but it definitely tastes good! My kind of comfort food if I don't choose to have any mains. I love the way the mushrooms are sauteed. To me, mushrooms taste the best when saute. They used olive oil which is healthy. And the prawns are superb fresh and springy. Escargots De Bourgogne $8.50 - RecommendedI need the seafood smell to be removed in order to enjoy this escargot. It did and all I can taste is the chewiness of these fresh escargots with lots of garlic.Marinera Paella - $13.80It has this very tomato taste and it stays in your mouth for awhile. You can also find fresh prawns, salmon belly, small little scallops, clams and mussels. It kind of make me wonder how they manage the fire so well that it is not too moist. This is the essence of what paella should be in my opinion. We actually did not squeeze that lemon onto the dish but it is good enough. …Read More

Original Flavour
Hong Kong Egglet
2013-11-22
The Hong Kong Egglet is a kind of egg waffles which has been very popular on the streets of Hong Kong and one of the favourite street snack since the 1950s. I always heard about through variety shows and also from food bloggers but missed the chance upon having it. Bought the original flavour at $2.20. It was so crispy like you are having crackers and can break it up into one little round egglet for easy consumption. This is indeed a great snack with that crunchy sound in your mouth. I do taste a little spongy within the egglet which is nice to chew on too. …Read More

Impromptus Dinner
Din Tai Fung
2013-11-22
I'm quite particular with their food quality because hopping to different outlets of Din Tai Fung, there seems to be differences. But for at least, this outlet is one of their saving grace.Steamed Pork DumplingsThe steamed pork dumplings were good and especially when it comes to the dumpling skin texture, neither thick or thin and it actually brings out the taste of the soup and meat fillings within this tiny dumplings. Oriental Wontons with Black Vinegar & Chilli OilI'm always curious about this dish which I always heard from Taiwanese drama called 红油抄手 and I finally tried it. So it is just wontons in black vinegar and chilli oil with spring onions as garnish. But I'm quite impressed as having vinegar in this dish actually stirs up your appetite. Quite nice as in the filling are fresh, especially the prawns. Fried DumplingsIt is crispy on the outside while it's hot and the fillings are made up of minced prawns and pork if I'm not wrong. Nice to have if you want some munching.Noodle with Spicy SauceThe handmade noodles was good and in fact always better than machine made because the texture can be determined with the skills of the dough master. However it has no unique taste coming from it though it is spicy. A can-have dish if you are craving for some spicy food.I also actually ordered the Steamed Red Bean Paste Buns (not in the photo). It is quite mini in size, skin texture was just right and also soft, and the paste within has that subtle sweetness which non-sweet lovers can opt for it.…Read More

Matcha Chococro
St Marc Cafe
2013-11-21
What attracts me in the first place was the nice crepes display outside their cafe and ended up, I just grab their Chococro for lunch. Daifuku mean Great Luck in Japanese, also known as a Japanese confection that contains a small sweetened red bean paste mochi. However instead of mochi, I taste two different types of filling stuffed within the croissant of a Matcha Daifuku Chococro, green bean paste, red bean paste along with a mild matcha cream that wasn't very obvious. The croissant was soft but wasn't flaky with the outer layer of the pastry falling off easily with every bite. This is good to go with a cup of coffee.…Read More

Double Decker Pizza
Pizza Hut
2013-11-21
Thank you Miss Tam Chiak for the invite and we get to have the first taste of Pizza Hut's Christmas Double Decker Pizza, launching on 20 Nov 2013.Apart from that, we also had criss cross fries that is tasty and crispy, the Christmas platter that has fried prawns (tempura type) which is fresh and crispy, baked potatoes that are well-baked till soft with melted cheese over it and spicy drumlets that is always so nice and tender, followed by Truffle Mushroom Baked Pasta that tastes a little salty yet tasty, the 3 different sparkling drinks from Emerald (Green Apple), Berri (Strawberry) and Summer (Mango) which I don't have much comments as it tastes about the same but just that it has small little cubes of the fruits that each represent plus the colour syrup to differentiate them.Last but not least is the Double Decker Pizza. We saw the demonstration of how it is made and you can tell from the photo how much of ingredients are used in just one pizza. A very different taste with every bite that stirs your taste bud. Most important, mango sauce is used to add on the flavour. Like it is named, there are 2 layers to this pizza and a wrap was used as a 2nd layer to contain the sauces, wrapped cherry tomatoes and so on. The portion is enough to fill 4 persons' stomach. This is one of their feature this Christmas and you may want to try it with your family and friends.…Read More

Curry Tori Katsu Udon
Umisushi
2013-11-21
The new NUH Medical Centre is opened and is not just F&B outlets available but also upcoming stores like Uniqlo will be opening in Dec 2013.Umisushi is situated beside Prima Deli and it has seating areas for customers to dine, though small capacity.I bought Curry Tori Katsu Udon at $5.80 w/o any drinks. The curry neither thick nor thin gravy, striking a balance in between and makes it easy for udon to absorb the taste. The chicken is not the crispy type which will make the crunchy sound but a decent one that taste just as great. Mostly importantly, it doesn't taste or smell like it has just gotten out of the fridge, proper defrozing done. It could added small amount of carrots or potatoes to add value to its price tag at $5.80 per bowl.…Read More

Attended a photography session organised by Canon and we participants get to learn, practice our photography skills and had a 3 course set meal.Deep-fried Mushrooms coated in Wasabi mayo w Avocado & Tomato SaladThe mushrooms are likely coated with batter for frying. It is not oily and yet the juiciness accompanied with the wasabi mayo created a unique taste, which keeps you wanted more. The little cubes of avocado mixed in the sauce enhance the bland taste. The overall taste was good.Wok-fried Japanese Pearl Rice w Squid Ink in XO Chili Sauce accompanied w Seared Hokkaido ScallopIt tastes like I'm having fried rice but the pearl rice gives a little stickiness which differentiate them from others. And it is special when it is cooked in squid ink. It's not salty and a subtle sweetness from the rice, which I guess is because there is some dry scallop used that enhance the taste, and definitely fragrance. The scallop is fresh and blend in well in the chili sauce. Chilled Lemon Grass Jello w Sweet Thai Mango, Young Coconut and WolfberriesI have a mixed feeling for this dessert. The taste of lemon grass was strong and every mouthful, you can't get away from it. There are strips of mango and coconut, jello where the lemon grass taste comes from along with raspberry and blueberry. You can taste sweet and sour at the same time and you can't figure out which taste to look forward to. But definitely, the health benefits you get from this dessert is a lot. That's a saving grace.Quite a good experience having meals in hotel and definitely look forward to more opportunities.…Read More

Truffle + Crab
Addictions Café & Remedy Bar
2013-11-13
Found a place for truffle fries. To me, not many cafes served that awesome fries.I was fascinated by the pink water while waiting to be seated. End up, it is just some plain drinking water with colourings or sort.Truffle FriesThis one makes me feel like I'm having normal fries at Mcdonald's, except that the oil used is different. Still prefer a thicker fries version. But nevertheless, the whole bowl was wiped out by us. Just love the crispy cum crunchy sound coming out from our mouth. Love!Soft-shelled crab saladOther than the soft-shelled crab, I love the salad underneath. The former is indeed soft but a little cold, which is not crispy but not very oily too. The latter was good. I love spinach. The dressing blends in well. Tastes the sweetness. It also helps strike a balance for our diet. Shall come back for their main course one day.…Read More

Lady M
2013-11-13
To enjoy a tea and cakes with the ladies, you got to choose Lady M. But we did the reverse. Instead of afternoon tea, we had it for dinner.Checkers CakeThis is nice. The outer layer of chocolate and the spongy cake within melts right in your mouth. The sweetness level suits our palate.Signature Mille Crêpes - RecommendedIt is totally not like any ordinary cakes from the many layers within, definitely a must try in the menu. That lightly sweet taste that stays in your mouth. Not very creamy too. Every layer is in a good proportion between cream and crepes. Tarte aux FruitsThe tart was so-so, like those you can find at Fruit Paradise. Not really worth the money though I love those fresh fruits on top of it.Mont BlancI finally know the existence of two elements in Mont Blanc: cream and chestnut puree. As you go along, it gets sweeter which both me and my girlfriend don't really like but was okay with the chestnut puree. Subtle sweetness. To conclude, the Mille Crepes is still worth the try.…Read More

This is my 2nd visit and I brought along my friend to try it out here at Tom YUm Kungfu. In mind, I already know what is a must-order items in their menu.Mookata - Thai BBQ $38Our purpose is to have mookata so definite order. The portion of raw items are enough to fill 3 ladies up. They actually did a very good job in marinating those meat especially. The chicken and pork meat taste juicy and chewy.Fried Kangkong - RecommendedThey fried the kangkong in a tempura style. Crispy and crunchy. Sauce is provided for you to dip with but the originality is still better. You can find prawns and dory fish underneath the pile of fried kang kong. Very fresh ingredients.Pomelo Salad - RecommendedNice and refreshing. Boost your appetite. Very nutty taste as there are cashew nuts in it.Fried Chicken WingTender meat and juicy. Crispiness on the outside, crunching sound can be heard in your mouth.Definitely one of the place to recommend for mookata. A good variety of side dishes to choose from. You can also have normal steamboat if you want.…Read More

Look-alike Char Siew Bao
Canton Paradise
2013-11-13
Finally I get my hands on this Baked Honey Pork Bun after many times a miss and bought 6 buns in a go.The taste is just like Char Siew Bao but the difference between these two will be the skin. Here, the bun is sort of flaky and rough kind of texture, unlike the normal Char Siew Bao that is smooth. The bun has its bottom cooked a little longer to be seen like it is slightly burnt but it tastes good. A little crispy like biscuits which is love. So nice a combination. The fillings within are nice and you can really taste the pork meat in strips. And it is sweet. Worth the money.…Read More
