ok dinner with lots of choice
Seoul Yummy
2015-01-22
There are lots of choices here. The set meal is very worth it as it comes with dessets and a side dish. Taste wise, the army stew is so so only, despite having chesse in the hot pot, which kinda makes the soup a bit sticky and thick. To me, it has too many flavours and none stand out. Really taste like rojiak. I prefer to have Chinese steamboat. The stewed pork is a real surprise though. The meat is very tender and flavoured. It must have been stewed for a long time. We loved it.The rest of the dishes did not wow us as they were just passable. Service was ok. I dropped a chopstick and asked for a new one. It was swiftly replaced. …Read More

There aren;t many cheap and good eating places in Hougang area but this is a raw gem - looking at the long queue outside, folks patiently waiting for a slice a Thai heaven. We tried almost all the key dishes as we have a group of 6. Our fav turns out to the Thai fish cake - it's so soft and fragrant with hint of lemon grass, lime leaves, fish and all things nice. Every bite is a piece of heaven and you will want to crave for more! Aside to that, the pandan chicken also makes it to the top 5. Juicy meat wrapped in pandan flavor. The meat seems to have been seasoned as it is very smooth to the mouth. Honey chicken is a must have for my son too! Sweet, crispy and juicy chicken is always a crowd fav! I have no space to put the fried tang hoon but it is also worth mentioning as it has the wok hei! If you are here, leave some spaces for desserts too. We sampled all 3 and they were all great! I esp like the mango with sticky rice as the mango is very fragrant and smooth. …Read More

Came here to try the Assam fish head so many raved about but is disappointed. It is not as sour, spicy and fragrant as I have expected. The fish head is not big enough and the dish does not give the wow factor. I recommend that if they serve in a claypot, the dish might taste better - so that the dish can retain the heat and flavors.Dining in air con comfort is nice of course. The service is really good and the ambience is great. We also tried the mushroom with toufu dish. The sauce is good and toufu is soft. Overall, the main dish did not meet our expectation but there may be other Tze Cha dishes to try here if you prefer to dine in a nice ambience. This place is crowded during dinner so it might also be a good idea to make reservations.…Read More

Tea time in the neighbourhood
Old Habits
2014-12-18
This place is like a museum of old and memorable stuff. The owner seems to like collecting old clocks, signs etc and proudly displays them in the shop. Even the table is converted from an old sewing machine!I wouldn't call this place exactly romantic for a place to have a nice cuppa as I feel that too much of these antiques make the place looks a tad messy somewhat. I like things clean and tidy in general but that's just me. However, the owners are very sweet and charming, so it makes this place special somewhat with the human factor.Food wise, recommended is the Coconut Kueh with French Vanilla Ice Cream ($6.50) which we tried. We loved the coconut taste and it is served hot. The taste is good and we live it. However, it seems to be microwaved hot and I am not a fan of microwave too. We did not have time to try the rest of the food here as we just had a heavy dinner. Next time we are nearby, we might just drop in again to taste other specials. …Read More

Affordable Nonya in the neighbourhood
Teck Neo Nonya Cafe
2014-12-18
This place is crowded during lunch time from nearby office crowd. We went there during the weekends as our parents stay nearby and we heard good reviews for this place. The deco for the place is quite decent. You can choose to sit outside if you prefer to have fresh air. It's actually very cooling and nice in the evening. Food wise, we choose a few of their favourites. Most main dishes cost around $7.50 - $9.50 only, so it is very affordable. The Assam Prawn is a surprise as it has a hint of vinegar and sweetness, flavoured with lots of spices as well. We only wish they could serve more of it. The Jueh Pie Tee is very good and freshly made too. Their advice is to eat it asap (before the crispiness of the shell is gone). It is as flavourful and juicy as you will expect. The pineapple salad is another surprise. I have not tasted this before in any peranakan places. This salad is very appetitising of course, and it goes well with any meat dishes you decide to take. The meat dishes are ok for us. The meat is tender and juicy. However, it does not have the wow factor for me. Service is good and fast. Do drop by if you are around Safra Mount Faber. It's not eactly very near but a good 10 mins walk to reach.…Read More

Freshest ingredients, Tasty steamboat!
Shabu Sai
2014-12-07
This place is very crowded during dinner time when we reached. Each table is given around 1.5 hrs to dine (if I am correct). If you love your vegetables fresh, you will love it here. Placed on a bed of ice, it keeps the vegetables (we loved the nai bai and leek) cool and juicy. On top of that, they keep refilling them so you will not see empty bowls there, like other buffet places. The sauces here are also very good, and somewhat with a Jap twist. The choice not as much as Hai Di Lao but we actually loved these more. You can add lots of garlic, sesame, parsley to the sauce and to your liking. Mushrooms are aplenty here too. The best part here is that the meat are not placed outside so that the meat can be kept in the freshest state. You need to order them from the waitress but there is no limit. It comes to you so thinly sliced that when you put them into the hot pot, they turn into a nice pick immediately. Dip into the sauce and voila, you have the perfect hot pot! Healthy and tasty! There are many choices of soup but we chose the Tom Yum Miso and Tonkatsu soup stock. It tasted a bit mild but is ok after a while. Again, you can ask for refill of soup base if you want. For $1.99 extra, you can go for a free flow of drinks and ice cream. ;)Overally, a really nice, cosy place to dine. Will be back again. (it is $10 cheaper if we can on weekdays for the same things). …Read More

Excellent Liu Sha Bao
Victor's Kitchen
2014-11-30
Most people come here for their famous Liu Sha Bao. It is really good as it taste of salted egg and is runny as expected! The others are so so. The place is really cramped. They should have expanded to make the space more roomy. It feels really uncomfortable sitting in a very tight space as the owner tries to max his space. Service is quite fast but messy. Next to us, they delivered the wrong staff to the guest for several occassions. When making payment, it is also messy. They charged us for drink we did not order and had to ask for refund. So better check your bills to ensure it tallies before leaving. …Read More

Average Steam boat
Golden Mile Thien Kee Steamboat Hainanese Chicken Rice Hotpot
2014-11-30
This place seems to be a fav place for the old folks, huge place with many staff serving. The unique thing about this place is that on top of steamboat (main course), they offer other Tze Cha dishes as well, on top of the hainanese chicken as a side dish.Good place for gathering, perhaps. But location here not very good - at the basement. Anyway, this has been a long time establishment. The steamboat is passable. Soup is ok. Not especially flavoured. It is cheap though. In summary, there are contents (quantity) but not quality. will not be back specifically for the steamboat. The Hainanese Chicken is slightly better that the steamboat. But after tasting Tian Tian, this one is far behind as the chilli sauce is not up to the same std.  …Read More

Good comfort Noddles
Parklane Zha Yun Tun Mee House
2014-11-30
Tried the noddles in black sauce here. It was ok for me. The Yun Tun is crispy but the fillings could have been more. Overall, it is avearge in taste only. The noddles are soft though and when seasoned with the dark sauce it looks good. However, it lacks a dash of oil to bring up the texture of the noddles. The Cha Siew is passable as well. Could have been thicker, that will be nice. Replace the vegetable with Kai Lan will be great! There's plenty of seats around here, so no problem finding a place. The ambinence is only average.  …Read More

XO Fish head beenhoon
Hong Kong Street - Jin Biao Coffeeshop
2014-11-30
This is a must try! The milky fish soup is absolutely heavenly with the XO flavor and the fish slices are so thick you feel you are eating the whole fish. The ginger taste compliments the soup so well. We ordered with the bee hoon so that it can be shared by 3 adults. Only one word: die die must try lah! Will try their other dishes next time. …Read More

Nice Tim Sum place
Jing Hua Xiao Chi
2014-11-30
This place is very near Chinatown, so it fits into the culture of the place very nicely. However, it is not in the heart of chinatown, just a little bit away (near the Buddhist Relic temple). This place is crowded in the moring time, lots of tourist comes here too. Food takes a while to arrive so you need to wait. Every dish we tried were so good and satisfying. I personally think the xiao long bao better than Ding Tai Fong, and much cheaper too! The red bean pancake has a crispy coated skin with lots of sesame with smooth like silk red bean. If you are a read bean lover, this is a must try!The hghlight is the pan fried meat dumpling. The shape is different than normal shapped dumplings but we loved it this way. It goes perfect with the vinegar and ginger. Definitely juicy on the inside and crispy on the outside. Yummy! …Read More

Huang Ji Wanton Noodle
2014-11-30
Tried this stall near the coffee shop next to Fernvale LRT (next to the newly opened Seletar Mall), the sub-branch from the Depot Road. Long queue here, so prepare to wait. The beef brisket noddles are really good. Generous serving of beef with my fav kai lan vegetables. The taste is perfect - with the right level of seasoning. Meat is a bit tough but still ok. After all, the dish is only $5. Be thankful we still have such stalls around. The Dumpling soup is also very nice - only $4 for 7 pieces. The fillings are generous too. Will be back for sure! Ambience is coffee shop type so no air con but after an afternoon rain, it is really comfortable and nice! …Read More

Nice place for relaxing Western bistro food
Knuckles Bistro
2014-11-30
This place has been opened quite a while, just next to the famous Nakhom Kitchen Thai restaurant. The deco is simple but classy at night. No air con here but plenty of fans to ventilate the place. It was night time when we had dinner here (with candle light) so it was really comfortable and relaxing. We tried their knuckle dish ($10) and Ribeye Steak ($12). Portions are big enough and filling. Each comes with a mash potato (silky smooth), very nice! Just hope to see more greens in the dish next time. Their greens are very fresh and tasted great with a dash of vingeratte. The truffle fries are ok. Most tables order beer along with the food. It was a nice touch.  Service is great - there's a glass of free plain water given automatically when you sit down. Makes u feel very welcome. Overall, it was good place to dine if nearby. Do note that they accept cash only. So bring some along if you come by for visit. …Read More

Nice place for waffles
Hatter Street Bakehouse & Cafe
2014-11-30
This place is quite crowded with young people. Most of them are here to enjoy their signature dish - Waffles. We tried it with Pandan ice ice cream with a Gula Melak Sauce. The taste is quite good (taste almost like Kaya). Cost $8.90 each. My son likes it so much he's thinking of a second helping...The tart is so so for us, but it has a unique sour taste that is very appetitising. The deco of the place is based on the concept of Alice in Wonderland, dropping into a rabbit hole to find a dash of fantasy here. The owner tries to handpaint the concept here so it looks rather raw but you can appreciate the effort put in. U can get free water here (self service). Food Service wise is good - friendly and cheerful staff. ;)…Read More

We tried the salted butter scotch and it was really good. Considering it is a hot afternoon! We also tried the grape yakult yogurt. It was very creamy and light, flavourful too! It contrusted so well with the salted butterscotch. Ambience was really good too. This was was operated by youngsters and frequented by youngsters too. Makes me feel young once again!…Read More
