A simple but satisfying meal
Tsuru-Koshi Udon
2013-09-04
My sister and I decided to visit this restaurant after Cafe Hotel was closed. This restaurant is located at IMM. IMM can be reached by taking the MRT to Jurong East MRT, you have 3 ways to go there. The first way which is FOC, taking the shutter buses provided by IMM at JCube which arrives every 10mins routine. The second way is to take the bus 333 and alight at the stop where IMM is located. The last way is to walk there, due to the tall building of IMM. It will be easy to recognise and walk toward to.The restaurant is located in between M1 store and MacDonald so it's easy to be found. The restaurant is a small place but there are sufficient seats for you to dine in. This place mainly sells udon with different varieties of udon like Kitsune Udon, Niku Udon, Ebi Tempura Udon and many more choices with hot or cold udons too. There are soya sauce, togarashi and sesame seeds with built-in grinder for you to add more flavours and spiciness into your bowl of udon!We had a bowl of Kitsune Udon and Kake Udon with a complimentary mini bowl of rice, with the choice of Deep fried Vegetables or Minced Spicy Pork, and the choice of hot/ice tea. Kitsune Udon ($10.50) is served with a clear dashi stock, chewy and smooth handmade udon (if not wrong), salty and sweet inariage or aburaage (Japanese tofu skin pockets) and sprinkled with chopped green onions. It is a light and comforting dish to eat on rainy days or when you're upset.Kake Udon ($9.50) is served as it's most simple and refining way. The simplest bowl of udon with dashi broth, sprinkled with green onions and tenkasu bits. This simple bowl of udon will lightened up your day and your wallet too As the complimentary mini bowl of rice, it's rather bigger than expected but smaller than a regular bowl of noodles. As for the Minced spicy pork rice, it has the slight kick of spiciness in the pork but isn't very spicy. It is rather plain according to my own flavours. Just as an advice, you could enhance the flavour by adding the remaining broth of the udon, some togarashi, soya sauce and sesame seeds. Mix it up and carry on! As for the Deep Fried vegetables with rice, it is simply just vegetable tempura and rice. So nothing fancy but simple. The vegetable tempera have quite alot of onions so for those who doesn't like onions, watch out. The batter was rather tasty as it has flavour and texture to it. So be sure to try it.The mini bowl of rice is there just in case you aren't full from the bowl of udon so feel free to enjoy it!The final bills for both udons, mini bowl of rice, and two hot tea was $20. Quite a reasonable price for handmade udon and satisfying meal for 2. Don't hesitate to try it so go for it now! (if possible ) …Read More

A simple meal
Joo Mak
2013-08-29
This simple and traditional Korean theme restaurant. The lady in the restaurant is friendly and knows how to speak basic English so you don't have to worry about ordering. Each meal you order, there will be 3 side dishes provided for you. I'm not sure if it is refillable because I didn't ask.Banchan are different every time you visit but there are standards one like Kimchi, which is a bit spicier, Spinach, Bean sprouts. The rest might sometimes be pickled radish (when you order Jajangmyun), pressed fish cake, stir fried potato strips, pickled cucumbers, potato salad.A meal in here is approximately $12-$20 for rices or noodles related dishes and $30 onwards for stews, bbq and more. When you sit down, water will be served to you asap after you ordered. The good thing about this restaurant is that there isn't any GST and service charge or hidden costs unless you ordered something else additional. This is the well known Jajangmyun in Joo Mak Korean Restaurant! For those who doesn't know what is it, it is a black bean paste that is stir fried with some meat and onions then sliced cucumbers on top. There are chewy yellow noodles at the bottom. You have to take some time to mix the noodles and sauces together evenly. Enjoy the taste and savour slowly :) Make sure you eat it when it's hot because when it is cold, it wouldn't be nice. It is $12 and it is quite worth the price due to the taste.I also ordered the Soondubu, soft tofu with spicy broth. It was rather spicy compared to rest of the soondubu I had tried. There are clams inside so do avoid if you have seafood allergies. The rabboki, which is spicy hot pepper paste sauce with rice cakes and noodles and pressed fish cakes with some vegetables. It was also $12 and it was very fulfilling. The doenjang jjigae, fermented bean paste soup, with hot peppers, calms, mushroom and some vegetable inside. It is not as spicy as the soondubu but still spicy so be careful. It is very strong in the fermented bean paste smell and taste but it is a very comforting soup. For soups, rice will be normally served together. For those who like to give it a try, it is at the beauty world centre at upper bukit timah road. https://maps.google.com.sg/maps?saddr=Singapore&hl=en&sll=1.311247,103.813468&sspn=0.105372,0.195179&geocode=FZOhFAAdPCowBil1k4uKIxHaMTHE9atSz2l4iA&dirflg=r&ttype=now&noexp=0&noal=0&sort=def&mra=ltm&t=m&z=13&start=0If you're going from CCK, 67 could take you there. If you're going from Clementi, buses like 184, 61 will stop at Shell station and it is approximately 5-10mins to beauty world centre. The restaurant is located at the highest level of the building and is beside a bakery shop so remember to visit it!…Read More

Fair Meal
Suki-ya
2013-08-28
I went to the Suki-ya on 22 August to celebrate a friend's birthday at the lunch time. According to normal pricing on weekdays, $16.90++ for lunch (80mins) and $20.90++ for dinner (100mins). $2 addition is required if it is on the weekends/ public holidays. If you're a student, the price you get is $11.90++. There are costs for the unlimited supply of drinks. $1.50 for tea either hot/cold and $4.90 for soft drinks (Pepsi, Mountain Dew and 7-UP).There are 3 types of meat. Chicken, Pork and Beef. The meat are thinly sliced so it will cook fast in the boiling broth. There are 4 types of broth. Kimchi, Tonyu Miso, Shabu Shabu and Sukiyaki. We chose the shabu shabu and sukiyaki broth. The sukiyaki broth is a beef based soup and is slightly salty than other broth. (those who don't consume beef for other reasons.) The shabu shabu broth has a clearer taste and sweet taste. On the top is the shabu shabu broth and the bottom is the sukiyaki broth.Beside the meat, there are other foods which are at the Healthy Bar. There are varieties of vegetables, mushrooms, tofu, meat balls for you to make your broth with more flavours and make your meal healthier. For those who are worried that there aren't any carbohydrates food, there are rices, udon noodles, cellophane noodles and ramen noodles. There are eggs for those who likes to dip their meat into it (I like eating this way), making hard boiled eggs or simply pour the egg into the broth to enhances the flavours. There are many dipping sauces, sesame seeds sauce, ponzu sauce (shoyu with vinegar), miso tare (soybean paste sauce), and my own DIY sauce (chillies, ponzu sauce, spring onions and sesame seeds) For dessert, if I'm not wrong, the fruit of the day is by random. On that day, there are watermelon slices laid out nicely. There is a ice cream machine there but it was down on the day I visited the store so those who visit Suki-ya the next time, enjoy your ice cream At the end, we paid $11.90 for 6 people. 3 soft drinks and 3 hot tea [ ($4.90 x 3) + ($1.50 x 3) ]. The total bill was about $108. Approximately $18 for each person. It is slightly expensive for students like us but it was a satisfying meal for a birthday party. The service there are good especially an auntie who served us with a bright smile of her and joke with us to make us feel more comfortable. :)…Read More

Ju Shin Jung
2012-10-16
Wanted to visit Ju Shin Jung for a very very long time like 2-3 years and finally went there for a meal that was fulfilling!Head there with my friend to chill out and was hunger to have some Korean bbq. It was kind of far to reach there but I'll give you the directions =) DirectionsIf you're taking by MRT there, take the yellow line and alight at Haw Par Villa CC25. Then exit and look opp Haw Par Villa and you will see this building. (Credit to Ju Shin Jung's website) Just cross the bridge and you will be there =DIf you're taking by buses, either you head to Bukit Panjang LRT and transfer to bus 176 at the bus interchange. You will take around 1 hour or 1 1/2 hour to reach there. Alight at the stop at Haw Par Villa STN and you'll be there. If you're taking the buses from Clementi MRT, head to the bus interchange and take the bus 175 and approximately 12 stops. Then alight at Haw Par Villa STN.When you enter Ju Shin Jung, the waitress and waiter will greet you friendly in basic korean. Then you will be guided to yr table or if you prefer the traditional shoes off experiences, you could request for it. One thing not to forget to mention and to be complimented, although they used gas flames to heat up the coals, but using coal for barbecuing is really good. It gives the food a smokey flavor, that's what I think in my opinion. But my friend and I prefer the normal ones. We were given the menu and it was well detailed. There are many kind of meat that you can choose from to be barbecue. There were like Wagyu Beef Striploin, Black Pork collar, Prawns and many more. If you want to have a casual meal instead, choose the soups or noodles or the steamboats. I choose the lunch buffet cause at the time we arrived, it was available. The buffet timing is around 12pm-2.30pm but the last order is at 2pm. After that, they will close down for a break. The lunch buffet is quite simple. You're given 4 choices of the meat, Pork collar, Pork Belly, Marinate Pork and Marinate Chicken. If you're hungry for beef, you might have to order that separately which means additional charges. Beside the meat, you are given one choice of the dish that you like from the soups and noodles. If i did not remember wrongly, there were soya bean soup (which was what we ordered), bibimbap (we ordered that too), Somyun, mulnaeng, binaeng, soondubu? I don't remember much sorry. After we ordered the choice of our meat which was pork belly and marinate chicken. The table was filled with quite a lot of side dishes! The side dishes are refillable so feel free to ask for refills. The banchans were delicious, there was bean sprouts, spinach, tofu jeon i tink?, of course Kimchi that was spicy and well marinated I really love it, there was this side dishes that had onions soaked in some sauce that was extremely refreshing and delicious, today they had pumpkin porridge which was kind of sweet for me but my friend liked it, chilled tofu with sauce (it was really delicious and very very spicy), salad with thousand island dressing, anchovies, and cold seaweed soup which was sour but very delicious too. There will be a row of vegetables placed at the side of the table so do feel free to eat them. Finally the arrival of the meat. Trust me, the pork belly were fresh not frozen so is the chicken. The waitress helped us to cook our meat but i wanted to do it myself. She was nice as she cooked the meat for us and placed it in a bowl for the cooked meat only. Important advice, if you're there to eat plenty of meat, don't eat anything in the morning or before the visit. Or else you're gotten be full by the time you finish half of the portion of the meat. Or even better, ask more friends to join you for the meal. When the meat are being cooked, you could enjoy the choice of the dish you chose. We ordered bibimbap which the waitress helped us to divide it into 2 portion for sharing and the soya bean soup was good. It had a very strong taste and flavour to it. If you like miso soup for the Japanese cuisine, you would probably like soya bean soup =) Enjoy the side dishes =) If you want to make yr meal healthier, do a wrap if you like. Use any vegetable leaves as a base, then place a slice of the meat that is cook. then place any side dishes onto the meat or the sauces provided or even better, place a slice of kimchi on the meat. Wrap it all up and stuff it into yr mouth in one go! Try to take two bites if the wrap is too big or else it will not appealing if you spit the wrap out or the wrap is dangling out of yr mouth You could try to grill the garlic and place it in the wrap too =)After all those eating of the delicious meat, the dessert will be followed by. We were served with watermelons that were cut into the shape of a heart which was cute and we were served this drink that I personally like it a lot.I have no idea what was the drink but it was really really good. My friend suspect that it was sparkling juice but I wasn't sure. You got to try it if you go Ju Shin Jung. =) Then after all the eating, you will see two coins at the side of the table in a small plate. Do not be fooled. I thought it was a refreshment sweet or a sweet to get rid of the bbq smell in the mouth and almost ate it. It is actually a pressed tissue that requires water so it will absorb and turn into a wet tissue. Perhaps most of you have used it before. The bill was fair enough. Each adult is $29, the towel and the tea and the water was $2. And the GST and service charge was $10.62 which is considered expensive for us. Each of us paid $35.30 which the total bill was $70.60. Fair enough for such fresh meat, good environment and good service =D Even better when you're about to leave the restaurant, they will give you the Real sweets for you if you like to eat it or just to get rid of the bbq smell. Relax, the restaurant vacuum system is good so you would smell like a roasted meat after you leave the restaurant =D …Read More

Bbq and steamboat♥
Seoul Garden
2012-07-24
It was my first visit since a long tym when they still use the yellow bowls. I was hungry for some korean bbq but didn't want to spend too much for 2 person so we headed to Seoul garden at clementi cause it was the nearest branch since they closed the one at woodlands. We went for the student meal that was 12.30-4pm? We weren't very familiar with the system there so we asked this staff calls, "Joe". He was very nice and told us if we needed anything we could ask him for it. The choosing of ingredient using the computer was nice but quite laggy so be patient with it. We ordered vege, noodles for our hotpot. The garlic chicken was awesome when grilled. The bbq pan was hot most of the tym so beware of the meat that you are cooking will overcook because it is not possible to control the heat. the steamboat heat could be control so dun worry but the broth always evaporate too quickly. If u are there for the hunger of MEAT, dun bother on the steamboat unless it was for noodles. The meat varieties are ok and it is halal. The seafood choices are very limited like lala and clams only. The other premium seafood like tuna, octopus have to pay extra quite alot. The side dishes like kimchi and spinach was delicious! For those who love kimchi, rmb do place yr kimchi onto the griller and eat it along with meat. If there was only lettuce to wrap it up, it will taste better! There are other dishes on the side like deep fried food for u to munch if u are too hungry. There are sushi and cake for you to take for free. Note: If u want to eat more, try not to drink too much gassy drink cause u will be bloated and unable to eat more. The dessert there is like D-I-Y kind. Something worth to praise about is that there is a ice shaver machine for you to make yr own ice kachang! There are A LOT of varieties of topping and syrup for you to make yr favorite dessert. Beside it, there is ice cream for you to scoop it for yourself. It is self service so sometym it's kind of hard to scoop it yrself. On the right, there are many sprinkles for you to choice like chocolate sprinkles or crushed nuts. The fresh kimchi that was taken from the side dish areaThe grilled kimchi taste the best! You got to try it~! I bet you will nvr forget the taste.Grilling the garlic chicken! My self-made ice kachang. Shaved ice drizzled with strawberry syrup, sweet corn and nata de coco. The grilled chicken =D…Read More

Delicious and good quality sushi
Itacho Sushi
2012-05-12
Went there just to shop around and spotted this restaurant with a long queue of people. Decided to give it a try, I waited around half an hour for my turn. The theme and atmosphere was very comfortable, even the staffs would welcome you by shouting out loud. Don't be surprised they will keep doing it everytym a new customer comes in.The menu was just on the table and there are PLENTY of papers that u will have to write down the quality that u wan. U will kinda get confuse but look at the menu, there should be like a icon to tell u with color paper is for which. There is a sushi bar there is u are only eating sushi or sashimi there. I order Udon w Cha-Shu in Pork Soup while my mum order teriyaki chicken don, adding on 2 salmon sushi, 1 octopus sushi and 1 squid sushi. then a cup of hot tea and honey jasmine milk tea.The sushi were GREAT! The fatty salmon were out of stock... sad.. All of it was very fresh and delicious. The rice was well seasoned. The best i ate was the squid sushi, i was caught of guard by it! The normal kind of squid sushi is just chewy and slighty sweet BUT the squid sushi had lemon zest or lemon juice on it! It was extremely refreshing and delicious! You should really try it out! Must! The Cha Shu Udon was great because the both was strong and udon was very chewy as it is handmade. The cha shu was rather disappointing cause it have no flavor on it..The teriyaki chicken was huge! It was like palm size big. Pretty worth to eat it.The total bill we had was $36.15 including GST and service charge. It is around $18 for each person. Not a bad price for 2. Had a great meal there.…Read More
