3 pieces Drumstick Combo with Kimchi Fries
4 Fingers Crispy Chicken
2013-04-09
I ordered the 3 pieces Drumstick Combo ($10.95), up-sized my coke drink by another $0.55 and added a combo Kimchi Fries ($1). In total, my meal cost $12.50, inclusive of GST.This is the 3 pieces Chicken Drumstick Combo. I chose the mixture selection for my drumstick flavour, which allowed me to try out their spicy & soy garlic version. I felt both the spicy and soy garlic drumstick were equally nice and I like both of it. The Kimchi Fries tasted normal to me and serving portion was average too. …Read More

Fried Prawn Mee
Thye Hong - Food Republic
2013-04-09
There is always a long queue at Thye Hong for their Fried Prawn Mee as they always prepared it in batches. I was luckily as they just completed cooking when I joined the queue, so it was quite fast as they scooped mee after mee for each customer. I ordered the smallest portion that cost $5.20.As usual, my Fried Prawn Mee smelt and tasted nice. However I felt it could have been better if they use fresher prawns as those I ate weren't that fresh. Also, my portion contained re-cooked mee. Some portion of my mee were already black in colour due to over-cooking, evident that they re-use the previous portion share that's remaining and add some new mee to cook for a new wok. Slightly disappointed but still I like the way my Fried Prawn Mee is cooked.…Read More

Double Hamburger with egg and Miso Soup
Pepper Lunch
2013-04-07
This is the Double Hamburger with egg. It comes with a bowl of Miso Soup and a cup of Pepsi drink. It comes with two beef steak that's thick and huge. It also comes with cabbage, corn, three long bean, an egg and a bowl of rice. The beef tasted delicious and juicy. The cabbage tasted average while the corn tasted sweet. The Miso Soup has a lot of seaweed and tasted nice.My lunch set cost $11.90 in total, for the lunch set special promotion. …Read More

Rib Eye Steak dinner
Beef Kimchi Ramen Soup
Hong Hu Express
2013-04-07
This is the Beef Kimchi Ramen Soup, priced at $4.50, is filled with generous slices of beef, ramen and cabbage. For the Kimchi soup base, I felt that it's diluted and a bit salty. Also, the shop does not have a good ventilation system as the mixture of the noodle smell and the cooking oil smell stuck to my clothes after I left the shop, certainly not a good idea to bring your date to, but a place for you to consider if you want to have a reasonably priced meal in Orchard where the price is still reasonable considering that the meat and ramen portion given was generous. Not forgetting it also comes with an egg. If you are going for a cheap and filling ramen meal, their Beef Kimchi Ramen soup is a dish you ought to try. If you are going for a quality ramen meal to satisfy your craving, I think there are better restaurants or cafes elsewhere. …Read More

Lunch and chilling out at Ya Kun
Ya Kun Kaya Toast
2013-04-06
Was at Ya Kun to have a light lunch and also to chill out.Saw this very meaningful and insightful plaque hanging on their wall.Ordered a single egg. It tasted nice and delicious, as usual. The egg yolk is full and not broken while the egg white is semi coagulated. Ordered kaya toast bread, 2 pieces only as we were still quite full and wanted something light for our lunch. Tasted delicious too but a bit too dry. Also had a cup of hot coffee, which was in Set A and it comes together with 2 eggs and 2 pieces of kaya toast. Set A cost $4.50.Orderd ice coffee. I like it too as the coffee was thick, aromatic and shiok. Cost $2.20 only.Total cost of our light lunch and chilling out session was only $6.70 (which is equivalent to the cost of a small cup of coffee at Starbucks/Coffeebean. I felt eating at Ya Kun is more worthwhile as I get 1 x ice coffee + 1 x hot coffee + 2 eggs + 2 kaya toast bread.…Read More

40% Dim Sum Breakfast Promotion
Ah Yat Restaurant
2013-04-06
I happened to chance upon the 40% discount off their Dim Sum Ala-Carte Lunch Time Promo while I was surfing Ah Yat website. Their 40% promotion is only available from 11:30am to 2:30pm. So we went to try it out in the morning. This is the menu allowing you to place your orders for the choice of your dim sum. With a selection of 28 dim sum to choose from, I felt it's quite little and it could have been better if there were more variety. This is the Ah Yat Steamed Shrimp Dumpling. Although each dumpling comes with a full prawn and ample meat filling, I felt it could have tasted better if the prawn taste fresh and it's not served piping hot but it's only lukewarm hot. The skin tasted a little thick and it could have been better if they used a thinner skin. This is the deep-fried Seafood Roll. The seafood roll looks like it's been wrapped with strands after strands of noodles deep-fried to a golden brown perfection. But to be honest, I am not sure what's it's made of in order to achieve the noodle strand effect. But it's definitely very crispy and nice. When you bite into it, you will get to taste the seafood roll, which is a mixture of seafood mashed together. I think the roll paste contains fish, prawn and some other seafood which I can't really identify but the whole mixture of the seafood in that roll is fantastic, in my opinion. This is the Steamed Chicken Claw with Homemade Sauce. I felt it could have been better if the chicken claw is cooked longer as it's not soft enough. Usually nice chicken claw skin and meat are very soft but not for the one from Ah Yat. Also the presentation of the food is messy. Not sure what's the Homemade Sauce is but I felt it did not bring out the flavour in the chicken claw. If possible, only order if you are craving badly for chicken claw. If not, I felt you can satisfy your cravings elsewhere. This is the Steamed Shanghai Dumpling, aka Xiao Long Bao. For a start, the Xiao Long Bao skin is not thin enough and it also is not soupy enough. What I meant is when you eat Xiao Long Bao at other restaurants, usually when you bite into the Xiao Long Bao, soup will gush into your mouth and flood your taste bud with the sweet and aromatic meat flavoured soup of the Xiao Long Bao but in Ah Yat Xiao Long Bao case, I don't get similar experience. Also, if you take a closer look at the shape of each Xiao Long Bao, their shapes are not consistent at all, unlike other restaurants like Crystal Jade or Imperial Treasure where their chefs painstakingly shaped and ensured that each Xiao Long Bao shape looks similar. In the Xiao Long Bao dish that we got, one of it looks "shorter", one looks like a "ball" and only the right side has a decent Xiao Long Bao shape. There are more room for improvement. This is the Steamed Fish Roe "Siew Mai". Siew Mai is my all-time favourite and a must order dim sum dish when I am eating dim sum. The amount of Fish Roe on each Siew Mai is not consistent. Some have 7 Fish Roe, some have only 2 Fish Roe, some have more. Not sure why the Fish Roe is yellowish orange in colour. Usually the Fish Roe I saw in other Siew Mai is bright orange in colour. Each Siew Mai comes with a full prawn and meat filling. I felt the prawn in the Siew Mai is fresh. Overall, I find the Siew Mai passable, but nothing fantastic to rave about. The yellow skin tasted a little thick and not much to my liking. I prefer the yellow skin to be thin. Also the meat filling is not that juicy and tasted quite dry. Usually nice Siew Mai, when you bite into it, sweet tasting meat juice will swarm your mouth and leave you with the Siew Mai aftertaste, which is something that I always look forward to but sadly it's lacking in Ah Yat Siew Mai.This is the Steamed Dumpling with Hot Sauce. Simply it's the steamed dumpling cooked in chili oil, which is also another standard dish that I will always order when I dine at any Chinese restaurants. There are a total of 5 small dumplings given and it contained ample spring onion and garlic diced and mixed with the chili oil and huge chili skin flakes. The sauce concoction tasted nice but the dumpling is a little bit of a let-down as the dumpling skin is thick and the dumpling meat filling tasted bland. Usually those that I ate before, the meat filling usually have juice oozing out when you bite into it but not in this dish. This is the Pan-Fried Turnip Cake. While its commendable to present the Turnip Cake sitting onto the banana leaf, but I felt the banana leaf did not help in enhancing the taste of the Turnip Cake. Perhaps it's place there for decorative purpose? In total there are 3 slices of the Turnip Cake. I always like Turnip Cake to be fried with a Golden Brown colour and with Crispy skin but soft inner Turnip filling. For Ah Yat Turnip Cake, the skin tasted soft but the Turnip filling tasted nice. Overall I felt it's still passable and the taste is further enhanced if you dipped it into their in-house chili sauce. This is the Steamed Assorted Ricesheet Roll. There are 3 rolls in total. One of it contains prawns, which tasted much fresher than the prawns I ate from the Ah Yat Steamed Shrimp Dumpling or Steamed Fish Roe "Siew Mai". The middle roll contains BBQ pork aka Char Siew. I can't recall what's in the 3rd roll. I like the sauce that accompanied the 3 Steamed Ricesheet rolls. It's sweet, nice and not that salty. The Ricesheet Roll skin is quite soft and tender. The filling in it also complemented the Ricesheet Roll skin. Overall, I like this dish. This is the receipt. After deducting the 40% discount, I only need to pay $34.06. Without the discount, the original price is $44.90. The prices are inclusive of service charge and GST. In my opinion, I did not really enjoy my dim sum meal at Ah Yat but luckily the 40% discount helped to mitigate my unhappiness over the sub-par standard of their dim sum. Simply put, I don't think it tasted nice and I won't return to eat their dim sum again unless they improve on the quality. There are a lot of room for improvement. But on a lighter note, I am quite surprised to find that while we are eating, the restaurant is 3/4 packed with huge group of families who drove to eat at this location. Why I am surprised is because this restaurant, although it's located beside the Jurong Bird Park, but I felt it's a little inaccessible if you do not have a car to travel to there. There's only 1 bus from Jurong Point Bus Interchange and the journey took about 20 minutes. I felt the families are there for the 40% discount. To side-track, I felt the 40% discount is just a marketing gimmick. After deducting the 40%, the final price of each dim sum is exactly the same price that Ah Yat had priced their dim sum 1 or 2 years back. In other words, they now mark up the price of each of the 28 dim sum that's available for your choosing on the menu and "tell" you that there's 40% discount now if you eat dim sum at their restaurant. Oh well, 40% sounds a lot for big families, especially when you are bringing your grandparents, children, uncle and aunties along for a morning family gathering over breakfast. But for those who had previously ate their dim sum a few years back, the price is still the same and the dim sum quality is average or if not poorer than in the past for this restaurant that's located beside Jurong Bird Park. Regarding their staff service, although I do not have much issue with it as their staff are generally polite with us, however I dislike the way one of their restaurant manager and another staff treated the customers seated in 2 separate tables that's near us. The way the restaurant manager who spoke with a heavy China accent and with a condescending attitude towards the auntie when she asked him about the disparity in the serving portion of their dessert simply irks and puts me off when I witnessed the entire episode of their interaction with each other. For the 2nd table with the young couple, the way the waitress treated them as though they are poor and unable to afford their meal, I am simply amazed that she treated them in that manner when she is only a WAITRESS. Then for another table where the couple brought their elderly father to dine, the elderly man was wearing a gold rolex watch and decked out in expensive looking shirt. For this table, she treated them very nice and even bothered to stop and chat with them for a short while. In any service line, shouldn't all staff treat customers with almost the same treatment or at least not look down on your customers. Although I do not personally know the young couple, but logically speaking, if the young couple can dine at Ah Yat, with or without the 40% discount, they should be on par or even better off than the old auntie waitress. Oh well, I must admit that my dim sum brunch today at Ah Yat is indeed an "eye-opening" experience.…Read More

Cheese Chicken Katsu Curry
Monster Curry
2013-03-28
For my lunch, I ordered the Cheese Chicken Katsu Curry. As for the spiciness level, I ordered the maximum level of spiciness, which is 5 star. This was also reflected in my dish, from the 5 orange colour twirls that you can see on the curry sauce. I presume they are the chilli sauce and for a chilli lover like me, I felt it's quite spicy but I like and am able to take the spiciness. My meal cost $16.45 in total, inclusive of GST and service charge. I felt it's quite worthwhile as the chicken katsu serving portion was quite huge and the cheese serving was generous. The curry also tasted great! …Read More

Pork and Beef Meatball Spaghetti
Pique Nique
2013-03-28
I came here with my colleagues for lunch. I ordered the Italian style braised pork and beef meatball spaghetti that's cooked in a rich and tangy tomato sauce, which cost $18.80.My first impression when I receive my meal was that the serving was way too little, given that it cost $18.80. I was expecting something much more but I was disappointed when I saw the spaghetti serving portion was little and there were only 4 meatballs. When I tasted it, I felt it tasted slightly bland and not salty enough, unlike some other tomato spaghetti that I had tasted before.I felt it could have been better if they can increase the serving portion for the spaghetti. Overall, I found the meal tasted average.I also felt it could be good if their staffs could be a little bit more attentive as it took us quite a considerable effort to catch their attention so that they can come and take down our orders.…Read More

US Harris Ranch Ribeye Steak
Jack's Place
2013-03-26
As i have a craving for steak, I decided to drop by Jack's Place and ordered US Harris Ranch Ribeye Steak, which was cooked medium rare.To start off, the restaurant have a nice and soothing ambiance where classical music played in the background while the entire restaurant is decked out with a retro bar with restaurant setting. Bottles of wines are displayed at the bar, available for customers to order to accompany their meal.My steak didn't take long for it to be served. It came with a garlic bread, potato and strips of carrot, cucumber and long bean. The serving portion of my steak was quite huge. Although I ordered medium rare, I felt it was slightly over-cooked and it was cooked more towards medium rather than medium rare. Although I was a little disappointed, but the tasty and juicy steak more than make up for it. With each bite, you can get to taste the tasty marinated juice oozing out of the steak. However I would have preferred it to be medium rare so that more juice can ooze out when I bite into it. The steak can be cooked in either mushroom sauce or black pepper. As I prefer black pepper more, hence I chose that and I am glad I did not regret my choice. The steak turned out well when cooked with black pepper. The US Harris Ranch Ribeye Steak cost $35.80. After the 7% GST and 10% service charge, the total meal cost amounts to $42. I quite like the steak and the way it was cooked but for a cost of $42, I would expect much more from my meal such as perhaps a thicker slice of ribeye steak. Mine was quite thin. Or perhaps it would be even better if they can include a soup of the day into my meal, like what other restaurants are doing for a steak meal that cost above $40. …Read More

Mocha Spin
Spinelli Coffee Company
2013-03-14
This is one of my all-time favourite coffee drink, as compared to "The Ultimate" from Coffeebean or "Dark Mocha" from Starbucks. Reason being the coffee taste is strong and aromatic and the caffeine level is sufficient to keep anyone awake for quite a long time. The "large" size mocha spin costs me $6.70. When I purchased today, there's a 1-for-1 promotion offered by Standard Chartered Manhattans credit card where you get the 2nd cup free and you only need to pay for the higher value item.…Read More

Benjamin Browns Bistro & Bakery
2013-03-13
We stopped by Benjamin Browns to have our lunch. Here's an image of the Bistro, which certainly looks posh and nice.Even the paper napkin contained a nice design.I ordered Beef Bolognese Spaghetti, which cost me $16 (before GST & service charge). The spaghetti serving portion was just nice and it came with a lot of minced beef. There were also flakes of cheese placed at the top of the minced beef. The minced beef was tasty and yummy!!! However I felt it could have been better if they provided meatballs for this Beef Bolognese Spaghetti. For a price of $16, I felt the Beef Bolognese Spaghetti was slightly over-priced as it contained only minced meat and the serving portion of the spaghetti was only average .Here's the receipt of our meals.…Read More

Crystal Jade La Mian Xiao Long Bao
2013-03-11
As I have a craving to eat at Crystal Jade, went to dine by myself at their Jurong Point outlet and ordered their double boiled chicken soup ($8.80) and Spicy dumplings ($6.90). The double boiled chicken soup was very tasty and I simply love the soup and tender chicken meat. The soup taste so smooth and delicious and I would recommend this herbal tasting dish to any chicken soup lover.I also ordered my all-time favourite spicy dumpling, where they steamed the dumplings before immersing it in a plate of spicy chilli oil. This dish comes with 8 dumplings and each dumpling was huge. I simply love the way they blend the spicy chilli oil together with the dumpling. Not forgetting the spicy chilli oil is also nice enough for me to pour onto my bowl of rice.My total meal cost around $18.30 and it was certainly valued for money and delicious.…Read More

I ordered the Rib Eye Steak and upgrade it to a meal, which gave me an additional cup of Sesame ice-cream and a soft-drink. The Rib Eye Steak itself cost $16.90 and it comes with a bowl of rice. Upgrade to a meal cost $3 for the soft-drink and ice-cream.The Rib Eye Steak serving portion was very huge and I felt it's well worth my money to order this premium dish from Pepperlunch. The steak was also accompanied with some sweet corns, mashed potato and some long beans. I found the steak juicy and delicious. The sesame ice-cream tasted nice too, though I am not a huge fan of sesame flavors. In total, my dinner cost me $22.90 and I was satisfied and full after my meal.…Read More

I ate Hokkien Mee KL Style for lunch, which cost $6. The thick mee coated with dark soya sauce was served in a mini wok and was well complimented with their nice but spicy balachan chilli. The Hokkien Mee KL Style was indeed delicious, but I felt that the small serving portion coupled with the $6 price tag is not worth your money as there are nicer alternatives at Food Republic which also cost $6 or less. However if you have a craving for the signature Hokkien Mee with its thick mee and dark sauce from Malaysia, you can try it out as it tasted almost similarly close or same as those that were cooked in Malaysia.…Read More

Feast with friends
Earle Swensen's
2013-03-11
Seafood platterBought my friends to eat at Swensen Vivo. We ordered a variety of dishes such as the Clayfish pasta, Seafood platter which cost $30 and a few ice-cream dishes. The seafood platter for one person contained squid, 2 tiger prawns, 2 clayfish, 1 dory fish and fried rice and this dish cost $30. Although the seafood platter presentation was nice, I felt the serving portion was simply too little, for the price of $30. Also, it tasted slightly bland.Only the 3 dishes of ice-creams tasted nice. Also the ice-creams were creatively presented and serving portions were just nice. I felt Swensens still have lots of room for improvement in terms of their Western cooked food. But when it comes to their ice-creams, the taste and quality is still there. Also their staffs were not attentive at all. It took us considerable efforts before we can get their attention to get our plates and utensils for us to eat our ice-creams. In the first place, when they serve us the ice-creams, they should have get the plates and utensils for us too but they did not. This is an area that they should look into and improve on it as it certainly impacts the dining experience of their diners.…Read More
