Good food, not great service
Say Cheeze
2013-01-18
Walking past Say Cheeze you will definitely be attracted to its vibrate orange and yellow decorative colors. It’s a restaurant hard to miss while shopping in Tampines One. At the entrance they also had mouth-watering delicious looking cakes to attract customers. And yes, their tactic worked on my friend and I, so we decided to try it.The staff on the other hand, was not as enthusiastic and warm as the colors of the restaurant. They seemed to be cold towards us and always preoccupied with something else. Service was not that great, but the modern and cheery design of the restaurant was definitely welcoming. The ambience is great and peaceful too at the time we dine, about 4.30pm, good for catching up with friends. As expected from the name of the restaurant, the menu was filled with food with cheese involved. They offer tea-time set meals, which comes with a drink and soup of the day for $9.90. It was quite a bargain, even though the range of drinks was quite limited, with only ice lemon tea, coffee and tea to chose from.My friend ordered a Cheesy Lasagna while I had a Half Chicken with Cheese Macaroni, which was delicious. The macaroni was extremely cheesy, and I would definitely recommend it to all cheese lovers. The chicken was tender and juicy as well, though it seemed to be a little red in the middle at bones. After our set meal, we were both quite bloated, but we’re still insistent to try their cakes, since they were what attracted us in in the first place. Unable to make up our mind on which cake we order, we had a Mix Cake Platter, which consist of 6 mini cakes of our choice for about $12. My favorite is definitely the Rum and Raisin Cheesecake. It was soft and very fragrant, not too sweet and it melts in your mouth when you taste it. A must have if you’re a indecisive sweet tooth like us.…Read More

Great service, Great food
Rocky's Pizza
2013-01-17
I went to Rocky’s Pizza as a group of 13 people, with a reservation made before hand. It’s good that we did make a reservation because when we arrived, the staff had already joint a few tables together to accommodate all of us, and it’s a really sweet gesture which we appreciate. Hence if you’re going as a big group, the hotline to dial is 64689188/63446868The place was not big, but it felt cozy. The ambience was peaceful and makes diners feel really comfortable. The staff was really helpful because we felt the aircon was too cold, and they kindly helped us to adjust the temperature. As a big group, we took a long time to decide what to order and they did not seem to be to pissed off with us as well, and even helped us refill our ice water constantly. So thumbs up for their service! The food was great as well. Their pizza comes in two sizes, Large (12”) for about 2 to 4 people and XLarge (16”) for 3-5 people. We ordered 4 XLarge pizzas in total and they were really huge, as shown in the picture below. That's a 5 Top Economy Pizza, which can choose any 5 toppings of our choice at $33.20. Our favourite pizza, the Buston Special, costing $33.20 as well. It’s a blend of pepperoni, sausages, mushroom and cheese. For people who do not take beef however, please do note that it contains beef as well. However a tip for you if you really want to try this pizza, you can ask them not to include beef in the pizza. The crust was crispy and the pizza was delicious. Despite the people we have, we had a hard time finishing everything as well. We also ordered other side dishes, the Mozzarella Cheese Sticks which comes in fours, about $6.60 and the Deep Fried Chicken wings, 8 pieces for $14.30.The Cheese sticks were great. They arrive hot, so when you sink you mouth into it, aromatic molten cheese flowed out. Cheese lovers definitely should not miss this! The deep fried chicken wings were great as well, crispy on the outside and not too dry on the inside. A wonderful place to dine in.…Read More

Good food, not great service
Barcelos
2013-01-17
Walking into Barcelos, my group of friends and I wasn’t welcomed with the most excellent service. We had to wait quit a long time at the entrance before a staff finally attended to us after what seems to be an endless chat with his fellow colleagues. It was a little turn off for all of us, but since we’re all tired and hungry after a day at Sentosa, we decided to patronize the restaurant anyway. The restaurant was well-decorated with big wooden furniture, which would be great if it was a little more clean. However, the ambience was still serene and comfortable for a good catching up session with friends. The special thing about Barcelos is that they give us the freedom to choose the Spice level which we desire. In ascending order of spiciness, there are Tangy Lemon, Mild Peri, Veri Peri and finally Supa Peri. I had a Mild Peri Chicken Pasta Combo $14.95, which comes with a free flow soft drink as well. Without a combo it’s $12.95, but since it’s just $2 for unlimited drinks, I figured why not. The food tasted awesome. The chicken was tender and very juicy, though it got a little bland when you dug deeper into it. The sauce did not penetrate all the way through the chicken. However, it was a little bit too expensive for the service size. For almost $15, I would expect a much bigger portion. The amount of pasta was too little and I’m still hungry even after finish eating the chicken down to the bones ): But I did not order another dish as I do not think it’s worth it to spend more money than I already had. Nevertheless, if you’re looking for something filling, just something to satisfy your taste buds, Barcelos is a great place to go for some great tasting food. I heard they have a delivery service now as well, hotline is 62199408 for diners who are interested.…Read More

Quiet place, good food
The Pasta Shop
2013-01-17
The The Pasta Shop by Sakae is situated at Wheelock Place near to Orchard Road MRT station so it’s pretty accessible. The signboard was quite cute looking and the idea of having western food like pasta, and burgers in Japanese style was interesting, and that’s why attracted my friend and I to go in there. The restaurant wasn’t big, but it is really spacious. This may partly be due to the fact that there were no other customers around. It’s probably my first time dining in an empty restaurant But ambience wise, it was peaceful and sparkling clean. Decorations were in bright orange and green, which puts diners in a happy mood. The staff was friendly and polite as well. Greeting us in Japanese and carrying a smile around. They were super attentive as well.It puzzled me why there were no other customers around, because their food were not too bad either! I had a Salmon pasta, which smelled awesome. It’s cost around $16.90 from what I recalled, a little pricey but worth the price. The chunks of salmon was huge, and I actually still have a few pieces of them left by the time I finished my pasta. My friend had the Chili Soft-Shell Crab pasta, which cost about $15.90. Unfortunately he dug into the food before I could get a decent photo of it, but trust me, the presentation was beautiful and appealing. The strong spicy aroma makes us hungry even before the dish reached our table. And that's probably one of the reasons why it made my friend gobble it up so quickly. Despite the generous amount of hot red chili sauce, the crab was still surprisingly crispy. I grabbed a taste of it as well, and for all the diners craving for a good spicy dish, or just soft-shall crab fans, this is the dish to go for definitely. Just to add on, they offer Sapporo beer there as well, and it goes very well with the crab pasta.…Read More

IPPUDO
2013-01-15
Walking into Ippudo, you’ll be greeted by their staff in Japanese. The restaurant has cozy decoration and warm lighting, making diners feel very comfortable. I went to dine at around 4pm, so there wasn’t really any customers there. I really enjoyed their ambience. Their staff were also patient and helpful. My friends and I approached them to help us take a photo and they gladly agreed.Food is a little on a pricey side. A bowl of charsiew ramen cost about $20, excluding the service charges. To be fair, the bowl was rather big so it’s quite worth the money. At least you’ll not go home with an empty wallet and stomach. The noodles were super smooth and yet quite Q, so it’s really great to chew on. Soup was very thick and the just the aroma of it makes people salivate. You can’t even see the rest of the noodles under the thick soup base. One of the best ramen I have tasted I will say. The charsiew came in big pieces as well. I’ve been to Japan and tasted the ramen there. I suppose Ippudo has the closest taste to the authentic japanses ramen, in my opinion. So if you’re looking for great tasting ramen, It’s really worth it to give Ippudo ramen a try!The dishes were not only looking great on the outside, but taste delicious as well. Not having enough of it, I descided to order a fruit pie as a dessert. It cost around $5, and I was expecting a much larger piece, but sadly it’s only less than a palm’s size ): Felt a little cheated by the pictures, but still it tasted great so I didn’t mind it that much.Overall a very pleasant place to dine at with friendly staff and great food, just a little bit on the pricey side.…Read More

Ikea Cafe
2013-01-15
Well, these Ikea swedish meatballs definitely needs no introduction. And I do see why they are all so famous. Lovely texture and the sauce is splendid, even the mash potato served with it is great!. However, for people who doesn't take pork and beef need to take note that they are actually made up of those stuff. I believe they do sell halal ones at the Tampines branch. A less famous thing on their menu is actually their chocolate mousse desert. A must try.…Read More

Everything with Fries
2013-01-15
Always a delight to visit this restaurant. The place is sparkling clean and their staff is always pleasant and friendly. You have a choice over what cut you want you fries to be and the flavor. But the dish I love the most about this place is not their fries, but their salmon. The salmon is always cooked to perfection, not overcook. Tender in the inside, crispy on the outside. It's one of the best salmon I have among many restaurant. …Read More

Pretty place, Bad service
Nihon Mura Express
2013-01-15
Nihon Mura is a well decorated place. Their wooden furniture and warm lighting makes the ambience really nice. Even their walls were decorated with Japanese characters. Walking in makes diners feel like they are really in a Japan. It makes me wonder why the restaurant had spent so much effort into decorating the place, but not training their staff to be more polite and welcoming. Unlike most other Japanese restaurant which greets us in Japanese once diners come into the restaurant, Nihon Mura staff seems to take diners for granted. Even though there were plenty of seats inside the restaurant and no other diners in queue, they took a long time to seat my friends and I. Note that we are a group of 8, so it’s pretty hard to miss us. And when we are to ask for help, it took us ages to get their attention because the staff all seemed to be hiding somewhere in the kitchen or at corners, deliberately away from our sight. When we sat down, the staff that served us was rude was well, looking as though she was going to rush off to other places. She was super impatient and had a black face on throughout the order. It made all of us panicky to hurry up our orders and spoiling our mood even before the meal ): We were super irritated by it because she was the one hiding from our order, and yet now rushing us to complete it. They way they slam down our utensils and glasses of water was extremely rude too.The food wasn’t terrific as well. It was quite pricey, so I would expect better quality food. They tasted bland and not well cooked. Perhaps their cooks were as impatient as their service staff, rushing off to somewhere else. I’m not sure if we have visited them on a bad day, or they were like this all along. Checking out other reviews online made me realized their service have been persisting like this for quite some time already.…Read More

Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen
2013-01-15
A pretty recent fast food chain in Singapore. My first visit was at Changi Airport T3, but it was not as good as what I expected. Extremely crowded restaurant, with diners hunting for seats and children running about. It's not really clean and the service staff was not very efficient in cleaning up the trays.Food wise, it was average. The chicken were smaller than the ones in KFC. Though the whipped potato has a stronger potato taste in it. They also serve corn, which was not too bad as well.Overall okay for a fast meal, but not my favorite fast food.…Read More

Nice place, Nice dessert
Shokudo Japanese Coffee House
2013-01-14
While everyone goes shokudo for japanese food, I love going there for their dessert.Their banana waffle is not too sweet, which is great because most banana waffles are way too sweet and it makes me sick of it after a few mouth of it. My favorite however, is definitely the cheese tofu cake. A small piece, but enough to satisfy your salivary glands. I love the soft texture of the cake and they always decorate the cake so pretty! As for the main dish, I usually order the salmon pasta, but for regular salmon eaters like me, it's not hard to tell that their salmon is a little dry and overcooked. Overall, a great place, with nice food.…Read More

Hot Tomato Cafe & Grill
2013-01-14
What I love about Hot Tomato Cafe is that their staff are all very friendly, giving diners a very welcoming feeling. The place has a variety of seats, from the booth, to regular tables and chairs, to round cushion filled cubicles. Their food seems better the previous time i visit in 2012. Now it's quite average. You can top up about $3 for a drink, soup and a piece of garlic bread. However, that one piece of garlic bread is really small and pathetic ):Main dish wise, their serving size was great. Reviews from my friends were all average, nothing to be excited about. I tried the carbonara, which was way too salty for me ): They can do better than this!…Read More

Sakae Sushi
2013-01-14
A really small restaurant always with a long queue outside. If you're planning to dine there, it's the best to make a reservation or queue early! Tried their tempura ramen and curry rice, and they wasn't as splendid as their sushi definitely, just average. The serving is quite large, so it's not recommended to gorge down a lot of sushi and ordering a main dish at the same time. However, something I do appreciate is that they placed the tempura prawns separately from the soupy noodles, unlike in some places, preventing them from turning soggy.A must try in my opinion is the fried salmon. Surprisingly, they are not as dry as they sound, and were actually cooked to perfection. Soft and juicy on the inside, crispy on the outside. The serving is quite large too, for its price. …Read More

Soup Restaurant
2013-01-14
Soup restaurant is of course, famous for their soup. They change their soup of the day daily, then for that particular day, the soup will come in small, medium and large size. For other soups which are not soup of the day, they will only be served in small sizes for one person's consumption. So that's a point to note when you are trying to order. I've tried the herbal chicken soup, which was great! A little bitter for most of my family members, but if you love the herbal taste like me, you will definitely enjoy it.On all the tables, you will definitely see their infamous ginger chicken dish. It's rather big, enough for about 4-5 people, with a big saucer of ginger in the middle. An absolute must try! Better than the soups they serve in soup restaurant in my opinion.…Read More

Hatched
2013-01-13
If you’re unsure how many ways an egg can be cooked, Hatched is definitely the right place to go. The branch I went to was in Holland Village and it’s pretty busy down there. Thankfully the place has two floors to accommodate the amount of people. My suggestion is to get a reservation before going, or you’ll end up in an endless list of waiting list. The place is really cozy, with wood furniture everywhere and romantic lighting. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful, so it makes a really good impression. Even though some of our friends were late, they were not rushing us to make an order. The menu is really gorgeous and cute, as shown in the picture. Written on it was “2012 catalog of eggs”, so I’m unsure whether in 2013 they will have another set of menu or not. If they do, I’ll definitely be ready to try.My order was Sir Benedict’s, which is one of the signature dishes they have there. Not only did it look good, it tasted awesome. As I cut open my poached egg, I could only watch in awe as liquid golden yolk poured out. The bacon which came along with the dish was exceptionally delectable and crispy as well. Even the mash potato and the purple lettuce at the side were delicious. I almost licked the plate clean at the end of the meal.My other friends had other dishes, and they were also all praises for the food. I love how they presented their food all so beautifully. Even now as I am typing this review, it makes my salivary glands excited. The salmon was cooked really nicely as well, not overcooked and soft. The desert dish with the banana was really sweet, but very fragrant. A sweet tooth will definitely love it. Lastly, even the sandwich was great. “The best sandwich I had.” – As quoted from my friend. All in all, a perfect place for hanging out, or having brunch with a few friends. Excellent food and service. A must try.…Read More

Custard buns, yes. Noodles, no.
Kungfu Paradise
2013-01-13
The restaurant is strategically placed right at the entrance of the shopping mall, so it’s pretty hard to miss. It smelled wonderful from the outside so my friend and I decided to go in and try.The place was clean and big, and staff was polite too. So we’re off to a good start. They currently have a promotion – add $2 to complete a main course. It includes a soup of the day, drink of the day and a piece of garlic bread. The garlic bread was only about one third the size of a regular piece of bread, so it’s quite small. But it’s just $2 for 3 items, no complains there. It tasted pretty decent too.My friend and I both ordered noodles. I had the spicy chicken ham noodles (soup) while he had the chicken sausage noodles (dry). They tasted like regular instant noodles so I strongly DO NOT recommend you to try them. The spicy chicken ham noodles tasted exactly like the Korean kimichi spicy instant noodle you can get at a super mart for $1+ per packet. The sausages and ham didn’t taste exceptionally good too. On a side note, besides the food, it’s kind of weird that they served our noodles first instead of the soup and garlic bread, which was supposed to be the appetizers. I hate it when this happens in a restaurant, when the main course came a few minutes before the appetizers. It makes me unsure of which to eat first, the soup and bread, or the main course. Either thing I start with, the other will be cold by the time I got to it. So It’s a minus point. ):We also tired the custard buns, which was labeled “Top 5 in Singapore” on the menu. I’ve tried many custard buns, they are my favourite, and the custard buns here were one of the smallest I’ve seen. They were about half a palm size for one.Taste wise, pretty good. The fillings were really like liquid gold, so that’s good. They had a pungent yolk taste, something like the yolk you get in mooncakes, so for people who hate those, it’s best to keep away from them. But for those who love egg yolks, these are the perfect custard buns for you. They come in threes for about $2. No harm trying (:…Read More
