Disappointing
Swensen's
2014-01-13
It had been quite a while since i patronized Swensen's. I can still vividly remembered that not just they served good ice creams , they also served good food. However, my recent visit to Swensen's proved me wrong. Deep Fried Shitake Mushrooms - I guess the mushroom were over fried. It was quite dry and cant really taste the mushroom flavour. Baked Spaghetti Bolognise with meat balls - One of the better dish among the dishes i ordered. The sauce was quite savoury and the meat balls were chewy and flavourful. Fish & Chips - Supposed to be one of their signature dishes but it was such a disappointment. It was way too dry and it was quite tasteless. …Read More

Bangkok Jam
Bangkok Jam
2014-01-09
Located at the new extension of Plaza Singapura, Bangkok Jam is serving authentic Thai Food with a modern twist.I liked the modern bistro style kind of interior of the restaurant with items that makes you feel that you are Thailand, for example, the signage written in Thai. Seafood Clear Tom Yum Soup ($7.90++) - Don't be fooled by its clear appearance, the tom yum soup was actually very spicy. With a very strong lemon grass flavour, the tom yum soup consists of 2 prawns, squids and a few slices of fish which were quite fresh. However, the serving was quite small.Fried Chicken Wings with Fish Sauce ($9.50++)The chicken wings were deep fried before frying with fish sauce. The taste of the fish sauce was quite mild, leaving a little of sweet taste. The chicken wings were tender, juicy and goes well with the sweet & sour chilli that comes with it. Seafood Phad Thai ($11.90++) My wife is a phad thai lover and she found that the taste was just right. The noodles were springy and well flavoured by the chilli flakes, peanut and sugar. Stirred Fried Minced Chicken with Basil Leaves ($11.90++)It was served together with a fried egg and white rice. The minced meat was a bit too salty for me when eaten on its own. But with the white rice, it was quite good and savory. Verdict : While the food are nice, I would think that they would got to improve on their service. I had to ask for 3 times before they served my iced water which I requested for at the point of order. If the restaurant is fully occupied, I will definitely be more understanding. However, we had our meal near to their closing hours and there were definitely more serving staffs than diners. One thing for sure that they are quick was to present us our bills after the last order. …Read More

Not as good as Jack's Place
Eatzi Gourmet Bistro
2014-01-02
I had been a regular visitor to Jack's Place and had always fancied the food. Eatzi Gourmet is kind of the Halal version of Jack's Place which they served almost the same menu. However, the standards really differ too much. Lobster Bisque - Way too watery and salty. The soup tasted too prawny like almost abit fishy. Totally different from the one that i usually had at Jack's Place. Lamb Shank - tasted ok but was disappointed that the mashed potato that was served together had turned sour.Verdict : Visit to Jack's Place, Yes. Coming back here? NO.…Read More

Value for Money Set Lunch
Hong Kong Kim Gary Restaurant
2013-12-27
Had my lunch at Kim Gary. Borsch Soup - Clear Tomato based soup with a few kinds of diced vegetables like cabbage, celery, carrot etc. It was quite savory with a bit of sourness from the tomato. Very appetizing. Black Pepper steak with Spaghetti - The steak seemed to be marinated as it was kind of salty. The black pepper sauce was a little bit too spicy for me but still acceptable. Old Yuan Yang - Coffee mixed with Tea. It was quite creamy. Not too badOverall , for a price of $9.50++, it is really value for money.…Read More

The Plain
The Plain
2013-12-04
After our team lunch, we decided to have some coffee & dessert before heading back to office. One of my colleague recommended to have it at the plain. It is along the street along craig road. It was kind of not that "obvious" cause i barely see the cafe even though i was just directly opposite it. Ice Mocha - Quite disappointed with the drink. It was too bitter for me even though it had some chocolate syrup in it. I also found it too thick . …Read More

Not the kind of Ramen i fancied
Menya Musashi
2013-12-02
It is the time of the year when it is raining almost every day. The rainy weather and the freezing air con of my office gave me the urge to have something warm and soupy for my lunch. Intended to have my lunch at soup spoon but was held back by the long queue that was forming up outside the restaurant. Then i spotted Menya Musashi which was just directly opposite soup spoon and since it was still quite empty, decided to have my lunch there. The soup of the ramen is too salty and oily to my preference. It came with only one pathetic piece of Cha Shu with a piece of Seaweed and a soft boiled egg. I think aijsen ramen seems to taste better. Came as a side together with the Ramen. The cuttlefish was abit too tough and chewy. It does have a mild taste of curry. The only good thing was that it was served piping hot.…Read More

Scrummy Grill & BBQ
Scrummy Grill & BBQ
2013-12-01
Hidden among a few block of HDB flats in MacPherson, Scrummy Grill & BBQ is offering western cuisine at very affordable prices. Within a few minutes walk from Tai Seng MRT, the restaurant had a very homely and cosy feel. You would able to see a wall full with pieces of cute drawings. My wife and i enjoyed the decor very much. We really felt like having dinner at home. Mushroom Soup ($3.90) It was a bit watery compared to those normal cream of mushroom soup. However, it had a very strong mushroom flavor. You could see and taste the bits of diced mushrooms and fresh mushrooms while drinking the soup! Tortilla Chips with Salsa Sauce ($2.50) A recommendation by the waiting staff. According to him, the salsa sauce was home made and indeed it was. It was kind of sourish and with a little bit of spiciness. There were bits of diced tomatoes and capsicums in the sauce and it added on to the texture while eating it together with the tortilla chips. Simply appetizing! Basey Salmon ($9.90) 3 sticks of juicy & tender salmon belly which was grilled perfectly. The surface might be a bit charred from the grilling, the salmon still remains its softness and juiciness. It also had a mild taste of herbs. You can choose either Pasta or Pancetta Rice together with the fresh salad as sides. The Pancetta Rice is a must try. The texture was not too soft nor hard. In fact, it was quite chewy and comes with a mild taste of saltiness from the pancetta. Rib Eye Steak ($15.90) Perfectly grilled to my preference (I requested for medium), the rib eye steak was juicy and tender despite of the slightly charred surface. The black pepper sauce was very tasty and compliments the steak (Just that it was a little bit to spicy. So for those who cannot take spicy stuff, you may wish to go for their brown sauce). The sides which consists of boiled vegetables and mashed potato. The mashed potato was soft and had a buttery taste. Verdict: The food was great and the service was really good (They do not charge GST & service charge!). With the homely decor and surroundings, it is definitely a place to recommend to friends and family!PS: They are running a promotion (15% off all ala cart items) . Simply just flash the coupon on your mobile (which you could find in their listing on OpenRice Website) to enjoy the discount like I did! …Read More

Brewbaker's Kitchen & Bar
Brewbaker's Kitchen & Bar
2013-11-26
Located at the basement of Anchorvale Community Centre, Brewbaker's Kitchen & Bar will be the choice if you are looking for a quiet and serene environment to dine in or for gathering. It might seem a bit out of the way but it is actually quite accessible. You may choose to take the LRT (to Farmway Station ) or a taxi ( just about 5 mins ride) from SengKang MRT Station. New signboard spotted! This is not the first time that I patronized this restaurant. In fact, I was here quite a number of times when they are still serving the old menu (about the same as those offered in Jack's Place. Well , they are both from JP Pepperdine Group anyway). Now, Brewbaker's had revamped their menu which offers Japanese Western Fusion cuisine. I would suggest to sit at the alfresco area as the restaurant is just situated next to the Punggol River which you will enjoy cool breeze and the view of the river which my wife and I did. Lobster Soup ($5.80++) One of the creamiest soups that I had and with flakes of lobster flesh, the soup had a very strong "prawny" taste and the garlic bread that came with it really supplement the soup well! BBQ N.Z Beef Ribs ($21.00++) Served with salad and potato wedges, this huge meaty beef ribs is really a must try for meat lovers. Marinated with BBQ sauce and grilled to perfection, the meat was still very tender & juicy despite of the charred surface. It also has a sweet aftertaste which i supposed it was due to the BBQ sauce. The portion was quite huge and I would recommend 2 persons to share if you are not a big eater like I am.Carbonara Udon ($12.60++) This is kind of an east meet west fusion dish. Instead of using the normal pasta, it was cooked with Japanese udon which was much thicker and spongy ( which adds on to the texture), together with bits of bacon, strips of crab sticks and a sunny side up. The carbonara sauce was rich and creamy but not too overwhelming. If you like it spicy, i would suggest that you add the Japanese Chilli pepper and it tasted really good!Overall, the food was good and service from the service crew was prompt. However, what I enjoyed most was the serene atmosphere away from the bustling city that greatly enhanced my dining experience!…Read More

Quick Lunch Fix
The Soup Spoon
2013-11-14
Was craving for something to warm my stomach on a cold rainy day, 1st time that came into my mind was a bowl of warm hearty soup. Since i am working in orchard, decided to make my way down to Soup spoon located at the basement of ION Beef Goulash - My all time favourite. A bowl of warm thick soup which was filled with diced potatoes, carrots, celery and capsicum. Caesar chicken mushroom wrap - Quite bland, but not too bad. It was filled with some diced chicken and vegetables.…Read More

Jack's place
Jack's Place
2013-11-14
The restaurant had been here since my childhood days (at least 20 years?). Used to visit this place with my parents quite often when i am still a kid.. Brought my wife for dinner. Ordered the rib eye steak & fish n chips. Served in a sizzling hot plate, the steak was tender, juicy  and the black pepper sauce goes well with it. No doubt still a place for good steak but the Fish n chips is quite normal though.…Read More

Kopitiam price, Restaurant Standard
ASTONS Specialities
2013-11-13
This is my 2nd time having Astons. It was a few years back when i 1st tried Astons at the stall located in a kopitiam in Hougang. Experience was not that good though. However, my wife managed to convince me to give it a try again. Comes with two generous servings of sides dishes, Macaroni with cheese and mashed potatoes. The cheese was very thick, reminds me of the cheese that normally comes with nachos. The rib eye was nicely grilled and tendered. It was quite juicy too! Slightly charred, the fish was quite fresh and the sauce that comes with it had a mild herbal taste which goes nicely with the fish. Overall, it was a good and affordable meal (spent less than $30 for 2) & it does change my opinion on Astons.…Read More

The food is not bad
Lu Gang Xiao Zhen - The Asian Kitchen
2013-11-11
Had my lunch at this restaurant located at B3 of ION. Home Made Soy Bean - Not too sweet but quite normal which i don't think it is home made. Lu Gang Fried Rice - Generous servings of Chinese sausage and bits of prawns, the fried rice was not too wet or dry. And it was full of the aroma of eggs. Quite nice.Crispy Duck Fried Popiah - Similar to Beijing roast duck, instead of using the normal skin wrap, it was wrapped like a popiah and deep fried. Cant really taste the duck meat. …Read More

2nd visit to Kkongdon
Kkongdon Barbeque
2013-11-06
It was my 2nd visit to kkongdon. (My previous experience at the ang mo kio branch was not bad.) Ordered their set dinner for 2. It comes with a plate of meat ( beef short ribs and pork belly), one small plate of spicy rice cake, a bowl of kimchi soup. There is also a buffet counter with a few types of kimchis. The Rice cake was quite soft but the cockles that comes with it tasted abit too fishy to me. The soup was not too bland and it was a little spicy. Overall, still not bad.…Read More

Roasted Meat lover must try
King's Roasts
2013-10-17
Located at the newly renovated Balestier Food Centre, King's Roasts is the new joint for those who loves roasted meat. Deep Fried Tofu - Crispy on the outside and silky on the inside, with the sauce that was sweet & spicy. Roasted Pork - Not fatty & greasy, instead, it was juicy and tender. Char Siew - The Char Siew was tender, juicy. The sauce reminds me of Bak Kwa. Very different from the usual char siew you normally get in other placesOverall, I would recommend this place for all roasted meat lovers to give it a try!…Read More

Nice Dessert but disappointing service
Ice Edge Cafe
2013-10-08
Was craving for some sweet stuff after our dinner, so my wife and i decided to drop by Ice Edge Cafe for dessert. Everything was fine until when our order was mixed up with another table. They served our waffle to the table beside us. Because of serving the wrong order to the other table, they offered them for free but nothing was being offered to us after we feedback to the server that we had been waiting for a long time for the waffle .( hey look, we are the victims!) Mao Shan Wang Lava Cake - The cake was soft with a very strong fragrance of durian ( Mao Shan Wang filling was flowing out of the cake when i cut it open) . It also comes with a gelato of your choice. i had chosen the Rum & Raisin ice cream, and trust me, one can really get drunk as the alcohol taste was quite strong in a good way. Waffle with Ice cream - The waffle seems to be abit under cooked maybe because they are rushing out the order for us . The Roche Ice Cream was nice though, creamy and rich. …Read More
