Simple and Value for Money Fusion Food
Saizeriya
2014-01-30
Saizeriya is a family restaurant in Japan with many branches and it has lots of branches in Singapore too.It serves Japanese-Western fusion food with no GST and Service Charge!Mushroom Soup had a "Special" attached to its name, but it's normal. Except for the extraordinary amount of garlic. But, it's nice. The Curry Baked Rice is not anything special and took quite a while to be served.Overall, it's a fuss-free restaurant and I like it.…Read More

Lovely Authentic Japanese Food!
Nana's Green Tea
2014-01-30
Nana's Green Tea finally comes to Singapore! Open concept and interesting seating! Service is good too with their manager being a Japanese.Beef Curry Udon is super nice! The meat is very tender and sliced thinly! The curry is really not the average Japanese curry found in supermarkets or other low-level fake-Japanese restaurants!Berry Parfait is really very smooth! Not too sweet and full of ingredients!! The corn flakes add crunch! Interesting!Wakatama Udon is really fragrant and the egg is PERFECT!!…Read More

Classy Brunch in the Heartlands!
Pan Delights Bistro
2014-01-20
It's located near the Bukit Merah Public Library. From the interchange, just cross the bridge, walk straight, cross the road to block 161 and walk under it. It's just a short walk.Pan Delights is a very small café/restaurant. The atmosphere inside and outside is a big contrast. One would feel that it shouldn't be in the heartlands and should be in town.Furniture is simple with wood and metal as the main theme so it's rather dark. The board at the counter could do with a better decoration though. The walls are too bare so I think a few photographs of their food would help a lot.The menu is quite cute and unique. A few thin papers of different lengths are fastened to a wooden board with a metal fastener. Fits with the theme of the restaurant!Plus, there's neither GST nor service charge! Yay!The mains were not available when we were there at 1:30pm.The food we ordered arrived at about 2:15pm. So they have to do something about the long waiting time.Truffle Fries — $7.90Well, "truffle" is quite in trend nowadays. It's strong in smell but quite okay in taste. The amount of cheese powder is not enough. The white sauce should be tartar sauce? Nice combination.Pan's Toast — $7.90Honestly, when it arrived, I was a bit shocked to see it. But maybe it's because I didn't read the description properly. Anyway, it's a thick piece of palm-sized toast. The egg taste isn't really there and the edges are quite hard. They served butter which is good because margarine is not food so I'm glad. The mixed berry sauce is sweet and sour, very nice but barely enough for me to eat with the toast.Pan's Breakfast — $14.90It looks like quite a spread! The sausage is quite big and juicy. The toast looks quite sad and soggy though. The scrambled egg is fluffy. The salad is crunchy. The bacon is oily but yummy as it's not overwhelmed with salt!Spinach Pan-edict — $10.90A "healthy" dish of veggies, two eggs, two bun halves and dressing!Salmon Pan-edict — $13.90Same as above but with the addition of thin slices of super salty salmon.Pan-Cakes — $7.90Small and cute, the pancakes remind me of the ones in Little Pancakes, but they're not as pretty around the edges. The honey they used is not very sweet and sick and the pancake also gets the bacon taste, very interesting mix and it's rather delicious! The pancake itself tastes quite nice and fluffy too!Hot Cappuccino — $4.50It's pretty and looks thick. My friend said it's quite nice even with only one sachet of sugar.Overall, it's a nice place without crowds of people walking outside. However, there were quite a few people who looked inside through the full glass panel due to curiosity! Quite funny. We left the place at 3:05pm as the last customer. They close at 3:30pm before opening again at 5:30pm during which they will serve the "mains" in the menu.I recommend relaxing here for breakfast or brunch before you head to the crowded town area! …Read More

"Here, The Best, Shop" Japanese Curry
Coco Ichibanya
2013-12-31
After making waves in Japan and other countries for 3 decades, it's finally here in Singapore! Indeed, I saw it everywhere I went in Japan!Anyway, the first CoCoICHIBANYA Curry House in Singapore is conveniently located on B3 of 313@Somerset. If you're going down from the Forever 21 escalators, turn left, it's at the corner. It is open-concept and has comfortable seating. When my friend and I were there, there weren't lotsa people around. But our orders did not come super fast either.Hot Lemon Tea - $3.50My friend ordered the Hot Lemon Tea and it was served in a teapot, very cute!Clam and Tomato Curry Omelette Rice - $14It's very nice! The clams are big, juicy and fresh! The omelette is fluffy "fuwa-fuwa"! The curry spiciness level can be customised and I chose the middle level. Great!!Kinoko (Mushroom) Omelette Rice - $13It's creamy and fluffy! The mushrooms are soft and everything goes very well together!Great to have CoCoICHIBANYA in Singapore!! ♥…Read More

Delicious and Filling Value-For-Money Zichar!!
Different Taste
2013-12-26
It was a good and thrifty outing at Downtown East that day after a few hours of crazy fun of Kinect and KTV at $10 per person. We became hungry and went in search of food.Different Taste was literally full to the brim but luckily there was one table for the six of us right at the entrance. Nothing to talk about for the interior design (or lack thereof). It is just a very simple family restaurant with many many big round tables of families with elderly and young children. To continue our thrifty outing, each of us only paid $10 for the food we ordered! Good and value for money! Wonderful!鱼漂蟹肉羹(中)Fish Maw Crab Meat Broth (Medium)Thick and not stingy with the ingredients, I definitely recommend this dish! I'm a soup lover! The fish maw is soft and gooey, delicious!脆皮豆腐(小)Crispy Tofu (Small)As its name suggests, it's indeed crispy and it's not hard! As I later discovered that there's prawns in the filling, I only ate that one piece.麦片鸡(小)Cereal Chicken (Small)I love this dish as well! The cereal is sweet and crispy! The chicken meat is not hard from the deep frying and retains its juiciness!酸甜鱼片(小)Sweet and Sour Fish (Small)The balance is important in this dish and it really did not disappoint! Yummy! Not too sweet nor too sour, just nice, add your mouthful with a piece of the cucumber, perfect!!蚝油小芥蘭(中)Small Kailan in Oyster Sauce (Medium)Very normal dish done to perfection~ Good!!I'd totally recommend you this family restaurant if you happen to be at Downtown East!!…Read More

Opposite of Express
ThaiExpress
2013-12-26
This particular branch of ThaiExpress has a "Bistro" attached to its name and we have no idea why because it's not small and café-like, it's got two levels and serves full meals! As the name suggests, "express" is an overstatement for ThaiExpress chains. Their serving time is notoriously long and this branch is no exception. Being super hungry did not help at all.Though the service is not very friendly and the time taken can be improved by 150%, the food is good, so, okay. The Green Curry was shiok!! It's thick and spicy! The coconut fragrant is strong and sweet! The Beef Glass Noodles was good too! The soup is clear with soft and bouncy glass noodles! The beef is also tender and strong in taste from the spices and herbs! The Chicken was nice too! Crispy and tender! The sauce is HOT though!!If you have a lot of time to spare and not so hungry, you can wait in this ThaiExpress Bistro.…Read More

Delicious and Cute Little Pancakes
Little Pancakes
2013-12-26
Little Pancakes was all over the media when it first opened. Before it opened, they also put in a lot of effort into promoting their opening on FaceBook. It is situated along Upper Thomson Road and it has a direct bus stop. The building is very special because it is not by the pedestrian pavement, it is further inside with a big space and it has a very classic design from the olden English days. With its highly recognisable icons of Mr and Mrs Pancakes as the design on the glass doors of Little Pancakes, you can be sure to press that bus bell in advance. The menu is a few cards held together by a book ring. Everything is cute in this shop, even the girls making pancakes. They are all smiles when my friend and I entered the shop. It has a free feeling even though it's my first time there. We just sat down at a two-seater and looked at the menu without any need for assistance (unlike posh/posh-wannabe restaurants). The shop is narrow but the distance between each set of tables is good enough. The decoration on the walls are quite nice and homely. The design of Mr and Mrs Pancake is cute too. A very good start for branding and merchandising. The serving time was quite long in actual fact but we just chat and didn’t realise the time.Iced Chocolate - $3.90Quite sweet and thick! Yumz!Apple Yakult Love - $3.70Sweet and sour, it's really quite shiok and refreshing!Something Blue - $8.50I was pleasantly surprised by the size and amount of the pancakes, so cute and small, placed in stacks and on a square plate! The contrast is nice as everything's round. I especially like the placement, it's very artsy fartsy, haha! The blueberry yogurt in the shot glass is exciting with the sour and thick yogurt and the sweet blueberry jam! It’s got blueberry yoghurt, maple syrup, butter, vanilla ice cream, blueberries and the little pancakes!! Not too sweet, very nice!!Peanut Butter Time - $8.20It’s got peanut butter, butter, bananas, vanilla ice cream and the little pancakes! Compared to my Something Blue, this dish seems really plain and ordinary. But for peanut butter and banana lovers, it's heaven! The placement is also nice and like the name suggests, "TIME"!Overall, I really like the atmosphere of this little shop. Free and easy, cozy as well! I'd recommend this shop for a lazy afternoon high tea session with your friends and then chat the day away!…Read More

Kkongdon Korean BBQ in SAFRA Toa Payoh
Kkongdon Barbeque
2013-12-26
Kkongdon is located on the first floor of SAFRA Toa Payoh. It is a 5-min leisure walk from Toa Payoh Interchange. The restaurant is not immediately visible upon entering the cold building, one has to walk right in, past the lift lobby and through a pair of glass doors. We were here for dinner after a company event. The interior is dark because of the dim lighting in the middle and the strong lighting hitting against the walls from spotlights. I think that having Japanese katakana on the board below the shop's logo is a bit confusing for people who are not familiar with both cultures. One table sits four people with a big pan in the middle and a smoke vent on top. There is a set of 5 types of sauces on the left and right side of each table. I didn't try them at all because they looked like they're pretty hot. The restaurant's not very spacious but it was still able to accommodate us when we requested for extra chairs around our table. The salad bar was very tiny. There were 8 types of vegetables at first. None are remotely nice except for maybe the super sour seaweed, raw lettuce and boiled lotus root. Later, halfway through our meal, they added big bean sprouts, and luckily it's not weird-tasting like the others! I tried all and only a few were okay, it's quite sad for a veggie lover like me.My colleague and I had Set A. Sweet marinated short ribs and spicy chicken. ($20.80++) The set includes:The raw ribs and chicken.Korean rice cakes.Bean paste stew with tofu. And rice. The service staff did brush a layer of oil or something on the flat pan but our chicken and short ribs got stuck to the pan pretty badly!! They became charred really easily!! So the bits stuck onto the pan kept getting more and more charred. -_-"The meat was still sticking to the pan even after the service staff came to brush layers of oil, twice. -_-"Though the pan was really bad, the meat turned out quite okay. Mainly because of the marinate? The short rib is tough and hard to separate from the bone. But the marinate makes it taste nice. It's not too salty nor sweet. The spicy chicken is also tough and true enough, it's hot and spicy but nothing I can't take. However, it's a tad too spicy for my colleague. The stew is okay, still edible. The tofu is soft and Singaporean market tofu. Didn't notice any meat inside though they're supposed to be there. As for the final dish, it's the rice cakes. Like.. The colour of the dish is okay and may make one think it should taste nice but it's got no taste actually. Bland. Looks are deceiving.Overall, it's a very bad dinner, it's the first time in a while for me to have such a disappointing meal. I will never go back to any Kkongdon in the future.…Read More

Kurobuta Gyoza and Cake!
Tampopo
2013-11-26
There was a food fair in the middle of Takashimaya so it was crowded there but not at Tampopo. Lucky~Deep Fried Black Pig Gyoza (6pcs) - $6.80Crispy on the outside and so tender on the inside! The kurobuta is so good! It is so smooth that it literally glides into your throat! Tender and juicy, the flavour of the pork is well-kept and leaves us craving for more! Kurobuta/Berkshire pork is known for its brimming fat content lined prettily on a single slice. So I think that $6.80 is really worth the price of this gyoza dish! Chocolate Marble Chiffon Cake - $6.50OH! So soft! This cake is one of the softest cakes I've ever eaten! Fluffy like clouds, I was literally on Cloud Nine~The cream is not the sick-in-your-stomach conventional cream, it's really light and soft and not so sweet and most importantly, does not make one sick! The almond pieces help to balance the taste of the whole cake by adding some crunchy and natural-sweetness factors!Overall, I love this cake so much! Worth every penny!…Read More

Long But Efficient Line for Popular Nasi Lemak
Ponggol Nasi Lemak Centre
2013-11-26
The queue will look daunting forever no matter what time you go to this outlet along Upper Serangoon Road. However, the staff and patrons there are very well-trained and the queue moved very fast. So you don't feel the queue is a killjoy. They have a wide display window for all their dishes so that you can make up your mind fast while queuing and it's one of the points that makes the line move so fast. The chicken wings looked very popular because they constantly have a new batch to pour into the container. However, I didn't order that. Instead, I ordered their otah, fish cake and egg. Cucumber will be given at the cashier.$2.70.The rice is their highlight. I can tell why they are so popular. It's got that really fragrant and sweet coconut smell and it tastes really nice and not clumped together. Unlike other nasi lemak that will make you drink 10 glasses of water, this nasi lemak is surprisingly refreshing. The other highlight is the otah. I don't know if they make it themselves, but it's really very nice. Better than average otah you can buy on its own. This otah is not extremely spicy, it is just right to excite the taste buds without paralyzing your tongue. The sweetness and saltiness are balanced too!The fried fish cake is the normal fish cake you can find in economical beehoon and nasi lemak stalls all over Singapore, so there's nothing special. Same goes for the egg.So don't be turned off by the long queue, its speed may surprise you! Try this much-talked-about Nasi Lemak at least once in your life!…Read More

Nice Ramen and Gyoza!
Bishamon
2013-11-15
It's a cold rainy day so we were looking for something warm to eat when we came across this Japanese restaurant located on the first floor of Funan the IT Mall. As we all like Japanese cuisine, we went in. The place was dim because of the dark wood in the entire place - tables, walls, chairs, etc. Posters of Sapporo and Japanese writings decorated the small restaurant, so it gave me quite a cozy feeling.Chashu Ramen. As I always order serial number 1 on the menu, this was what I settled for. The soup was quite salty and was only lukewarm, not that I like it burning hot, but at least there should be some smoke floating from the bowl of ramen. The Chashu was not big enough to be presentable and it showed a lack of sincerity in cooking and/or restaurant management. It was also quite bland in taste or maybe the soup was too salty. The saving graces were the half egg and the ramen noodles. The egg was cooked just right! The noodles were springy and fun but easy to chew!Gyoza. We ordered a plate for share. It was not juicy, so it's rather dry. The sauce also didn't really bring out the meat flavour. I love gyozas, so this was quite a disappointment.Unagi Don. One of my friends ordered this rice bowl. It was so small I was shocked. However, my friend said that it tasted quite alright.Maybe someday, I shall go back and try other dishes and see if there's any improvements.…Read More

Mazui Christmas Eve Dinner
Secret Recipe
2013-11-14
I think it was our entire group's first time having actual dinner at Secret Recipe. I have previously (years ago) tried their cheesecakes and I think they're really good!We each ordered a different main course and it took quite a long while to arrive. I had this Chicken Lasagna which was one of the cheapest main courses on the menu. The dough tasted uncooked and the meat sauce was tasteless. It was so unexpectedly disappointing. Apparently, it is so bad that they even took it off their latest menu, gosh!We tried each others' main courses and we regretted having our dinner there. For my side order, I had Pumpkin Soup ($4.90). I still think this is the best item on their entire menu. It's an intriguing soup because it looks and tastes like curry but it's actually pumpkin soup. LOL.Both items cost me $15.70. Not worth it.Well, overall, please only come here for the cakes and soups and only if you can endure the bad service and rowdy crowd.…Read More

Busy Ramen Shop Hidden Inside a Hotel
IPPUDO
2013-10-28
The main feeling of this place is dark. It is also noisy like a ramen shop but it's just dark and cramped. We were seated at the table in the middle of the whole restaurant. It's quite embarrassing actually but luckily, I had four friends with me.The wall features three versions of a comic. They are in Japanese, English and Mandarin. It talks about ramen, I think (I don't remember, lol). Most of the tables are big, so there are often strangers sharing tables and I thought it's weird.Over at the counter, it's tastefully decorated with red and white utensils at the top. The chefs were busy cooking and the waiters and waitresses were shouting "Irrasshaimase!" and "Arigatou gozaimasu!" all over the place. So, only the noise is very authentic. XDI had Shiromaru Tamago with medium hardness ramen! You can choose the soup, ingredients (add some $$) and the hardness of the noodles! It is rather salty despite its looks. The chashu is a tiny bit hard. The ramen is really nice though, springy and nice to chew. The egg is pretty well done too! Not so cooked on the inside (yolk) but cooked fully on the outside (white). I love it!When we left, there was still a long queue which goes to show the popularity of the shop. So, go early, have punctual friends (they only let you sit if all people in the group has arrived) and you won't have to wait long.…Read More

So Good Even Joe Labero Eats In It
Imperial Treasure La Mian Xiao Long Bao
2013-10-28
So we went for the INCANTO show again because of the previous cancellation halfway through the show. After the fantastic show, we went for dinner at Imperial Treasure, again. This time we had a proper meal of four dishes and one rice. As always, the service is quite good, the crew is friendly and quite efficient.Drunken Chicken. ★★★★★It's very very delicious! The chicken skin is bouncy and "transparent-like"! Both the chicken skin and the meat totally absorbed the wine-laden gravy and it's so shiok!Sweet and Sour Fish. ★★★★☆A really fresh fish with a well-mixed sauce! The balance of the sweet and the sour taste is near perfection! Seeds also add that extra crunch! Very interesting!Crab Meat Fried Rice. ★★★★☆I love the fried rice! Though it is a bit too oily. Every rice grain is glistening with the oil and the dish looks very pretty~ XD The crab meat is not crabsticks but real crab meat! Super delicious.Frog Legs. ★★★Very expensive dish without much legs. They are also buried under a ton of chilli and green spring onions. The taste is good but really too little for the price paid.Pig's Trotters. ★★★It is very sour!! Otherwise, it's quite okay because the meat is super tender and the skin is so sticky and bouncy, yummy! When we were leaving the restaurant, we saw the Illusionist, Joe Labero, who performed earlier for us, was just starting to settle in his seat! Good taste! ^_^…Read More

Presentation: Zero points
BBQ Chicken
2013-10-28
I don't know if it's a case of desperate-for-customers or what, but the woman who served us jumped to the conclusion that we're students and ushered us in telling us that we can get the Student Deals. It was dinner time but the restaurant was far from crowded. Quite a feat for a restaurant located at the basement of Tampines 1 which was facing the exit/entrance of the Tampines MRT Station.Chicken Stew with Olive Rice. $8.As you can see from the photo, it is ugly. My honest first impression. However, the taste was okay. The chicken is not very tender but it's chewable. The stew is not spicy, not too salty, but also very bland. The rice is good because it's very fragrant and smooth. So it makes up for the not-so-good stew.I think I will never visit BBQ Chicken anymore, thank you very much.…Read More
