Sumptuous!
The Sushi Bar
2013-08-24
Ordered a normal chirashi don for takeaway. They have a premier version which I suspect will include uni n toro at $43.90.Service was really slow at 3pm even with a really crowded kitchen. Waited almost 30 mins and in between no dishes came out of the kitchen except for 2 aburi salmon rolls. Just when I was getting impatient, I heard a kitchen staff said whose chirashi don been sitting here? And no surprise it was mine which had probably sat there for 10 mins already. Got home and boy was I in for a treat. The unhappiness I felt from the lacked in service earlier evaporated into thin air. There's aburi majuro n aburi salmon. Fresh sashimi includes salmon, hamachi, mekajiki, maguro, taro, hotate 3 thick slices of each variety. Then there's also tamagoyaki and generous sprinkle of ikura. All in a very delicious chirashi don and definitely value for money! …Read More

Pleasant evening
Toots Brasserie
2013-08-22
Decided to try this restaurant on a public holiday evening. There's 4 other tables that were taken apart from ours. Not too crowded and Chef owner Jason Wong was very friendly chatting with each table. He explained to us as the restaurant is new and there's still some teething issues for example, the kitchen staff had to double up as wait staff as a few of them quit the job that day. Appreciate the honesty and that the kitchen staff really tried their best to serve in the dining hall. Toots makes their own pork and duck rillette to go with their complimentary baguette. It's tasty n definitely a nice deviation from the standard butter spread. We ordered the frog legs with home made garlic butter sauce. It's pretty tasty and when we discovered one of the leg was slightly undercooked they immediately prepared us another cassoulet of perfectly cooked frog legs (we already ate a few from the previous cassoulet) thumbs up for service recovery!I ordered a pan seared foie gras with marinated beet root salad and seasonal grapes. The surface has a light crisp but I find the foie gras not juicy n soft enough. Lacked the melt in your mouth kind of texture. I had the Chilean black cod with herb crust for main - tasted abit fishy and the portion is really quite small with no potatoes side dish. I regret not ordering the beef fillet with truffled mash n foie gras, had a bite of that and it tasted fantastic. Even better than the chateaubriand de boeuf the others have ordered. Ended the meal on a sweet note with profiteroles au chocolat.Overall a pleasant experience but I wouldn't rush back to have a meal again. The popular jazz bar was full by the time we're done with dinner. …Read More

Yummy char siew n braised egg
A Noodle Story
2013-08-22
Got the noodles as takeaway for lunch. Love the presentation! For $7, u get 4 slices of char siew, 1 egg, 4 wantons, 1 potato wrapped prawn and of coz a big serving of the noodles with their special sauce. The char siew resembled the Japanese ramen and its really tasty with almost melt in your mouth fats. The braised egg has a nice runny consistency like any reputable ramenya should have. The wantons are similar to Hong Kong style as its bigger n u can taste the crunchy prawns inside. However I find the taste of it pretty normal perhaps lacking in seasoning. The potato wrapped prawn wasn't as crispy as I've expected it to be probably because I didn't eat it there on the spot so it turned slightly soggy. The noodles n sauce really do taste like a bowl of wanton noodles except that they included some konbu n pounded hae bi to it which gives a bite to it. Personally not a big fan of these little shrimp bits so taste wise it didn't really work for me.Love the char siew n egg but probably wouldn't go out of the way just to get this bowl of noodles since there are still so many ramenya I've yet to try…Read More

Men-tei Ramen
2011-04-19
This is my first visit to Men-Tei, heard alot about it and was finally had a chance to try it for myself.I had the tonkutsu ramen. I have the habit of tasting the soup first before mixing everything together. First taste, thought it was normal, doesn't have the sweet n thick taste of pork-bone broth. i tried mixing everything together after thinking it will taste better. No luck. Its still the same..... Next i tried the noodles. Not Q enough which is a huge disappointment for me. The charsiew was quite tough at certain parts but people watching their health should be happy to know that there's not much fat on the charsiew here. They serve half a egg with each bowl of noodles and the yolk wasn't runny enough. Best part of the ramen will be the bamboo shoots, thinly sliced and there's no smell. if only my other preferred ramen joints can have the same bamboo shoots.....…Read More

Shoyu Ramen way to go
Baikohken
2011-04-19
Prior to this visit i've been to Baikohken once. It didn't leave much impression. Ordered the shio ramen that time and sadly the soup was very bland. After reading ieatishootipost list of top 10 ramen. I decided to give this place a try again.Heeded the advice from the blog and had a shoyu charsiew ramen and boy was i not disappointed. The charsiew are tender and not too fat. And they're really very generous with their portion. They gave 5-6 slices of the charsiew and i was in for a treat! Ramen is curly and Q enough. Just the way i like my noodles. Shoyu soup base tasted robust with a nice aromatic flavour brought out by the soya sauce. The bamboo shoots were very disappointing here, the smell was abit overbearing and i do think they should have sliced it thinner. And their egg yolk wasn't runny enough. Overall its a great bowl of shoyu ramen and definitely value for ramen. I will be back. =)…Read More
