regular fried rice
Lai Heng Fried Item - Kopitiam
2012-01-30
I missed rice to this point that whatever was open at this 9ish PM was this stall. Not many stuff going on, I ordered this yangzhou fried rice, that came measly just there without not much condiments or seafood to expect. The taste was OK, with soy sauce and chilli added on and I I could barely sort of felt the shrimp bits more or less around. Good thing that it was not so oily and the cook gave a lot of pepper to begin with!…Read More

At the new 112 Katong!
RamenPlay
2012-01-30
My first time that I tried this under Breadtalk group branch Ramenplay.Ordering things and names that looks interesting - and heavily relying on pictures on the menu, I ordered the meat in bamboo (forgot the name it was in japanese), calpis drink as recommended by my friend which was very refreshing with the soft hint of the yogurt milk sense and sweetness of the pink syrup, and the spring rolls in transparency.Whatever picture they enlarge, I just picked that Different than most japanese menus (aside from the ramen of course) is this mixed egg and steamed meat in the bamboo. Eaten by scooping the meat on your spoon and dipping it to the raw egg (totally new yes) it had this sweet and then creamy texture to it as you dip it to the middle of the egg yolk. I would irk out but this one was actually sweeeeet! The spring colls were deliberately fresh and ultra crunchy with the vegetables inside, it was really full up wrapping on the sides, and with the non-spicy chilli ala Thai it was just mmmh mmmmh. It was a healthier option as it was not fried, but just an original wrap.Definitely back for more of these two interesting fusions which I felt like the rolls wasn't so Japanese …Read More

jjjjjajjjangmyeon and patbingsoo!
Sarang Korean Bistro
2012-01-30
Oh good lord how else will I eat pat bing soo anywhere else But before the pretty bowl of ice kacang ala Korea comes, the main menu enters in.I ordered the jajangmyeon, a very iconic instant noodle kind, the black sauce paste where all usual koreans call to deliver. This noodle is a reinvention from the lamien of the Chinese. Surprised however, was the portion! It was ridiculously tiny in a lasagna spaghetti place. So it was a short reverie of memory of how I missed jajangmyeon. Although not as sticky and authentic as the original one back there, this was the proper, more healthy version with lesser sauce (and less darker) topped with mushrooms. Push the in and mix it away! It was a more or less less tastier than back in Seoul. Told ya it was the healthier version. Now, the queen of ice, I was surprised by its huge amount and other weird toppings - i thought it was only red bean But anyhow, I managed to finish it by SHARING. It was that huge, the ice was topped in a big bowl with all sorts of toppings that are not identifiable as in your normal ice kacang, which is why its different if you were to order it from a kopitiam. It was finished off with an ice cream scoop and cherry. But more or less, most people come here (like me and my friend here) because the artist has sat on the seat, or watching the Kpop concert streaming outside on their huge projector. …Read More

Set promotion
ThaiExpress
2012-01-30
My friend, a regular to most Thai Ex outlets, knew how the service was like which I was partly impressed. She said to me even the waitress here are all the same like the other one I frequently go, serving us casually and treat us like a friend, not as a king customer, which I dont mind and the waitress was kind and playful. Whatever I requested she immediately fetched it out.The place wasn't full as there were only about 5 tables filled in this weekday night. The main course, drink and dessert costed about $12. I ordered the thai fried rice, and it comes with a yam like coconut dessert and spring rolls. The rice portion and how its fried is well done, and I immediately scarved it down. The spring rolls were quite hot as well from the fry. It was a good combination and I was longing for more rice as the chicken bits were already fried together into one rice portion. The coconut dessert was a plus as it was a more authentic thai style. But then talk about the calories of the coconut, oh boy! Whoever doesnt like coconut must kind of avoid this as it is very, very thick!…Read More

Pork don and the gyoza
The Asian Kitchen - Chopsticks
2012-01-30
Would it be only us with my friend that we were so starving everything seemed just nice in our mouths At any chance, the pan fried gyoza that came first was chopped up immediately, where the pork juice was oozing in hotness and burnt our tongue. Least to say that I remembered the burnt bottom was crispy and hard, the way I like it! Taste-wise was balanced with soy sauce so it was more on the salty side for me.The pork chop fried rice in yangzhou style had a delicate hint of egg taste in the rice and the pork was succulent as you bite in. It was quite thick in its fillet so it was very much filling!…Read More

Nicely done Omu Rice
Japanese Cuisine - Food Junction
2012-01-30
The presentation and neatness must be given a thumbs up for the promotion Omu rice (omelette rice) topped in curry sauce with chicken/pork bits ( you can choose, I chose pork).Curry was not spicy at all, and they gave the right dose of it to accompany you throughout your meal. The taste was pleasant and not overpowering of any hard spices, and the portion gives you the right amount to fill your tum. It is well done and the promotion price of $4.5 was a perfectly good choice. How the omelette was cooked as I observed and how the cook wraps the rice neatly in a long cylindric form and placing it into the hot stone deserves the Grade A cleanliness. Given the highest score as for me I consider it to be one of the to-go stalls in this food court.…Read More

tofu and greenery rice
Mixed Vegetables Rice - Kopitiam
2012-01-30
Back in the usual place where I eat across my place, it was time to get rid of all the bad things of eating no fibres, I chose my usual healthy looking favorite of fried tofu sapo, green vegetables in chopped garlic and sweet sour pork as a complement.I was lucky this evening to have chosen the right vegetables as it tasted sweet and the garlic, fragrant with its smell - most likely out of the cooking pan and not cooked several hours back. Pork was definitely a tad cold because it was there and the tofu was cooked just at the nice level of softness and the soup sauce wasn't that salty, hence adding soy sauce to enhance the flavor.…Read More

curry puff
Rochor Original Beancurd
2012-01-28
When your hunger strikes between classes, my go to would be this curry puff by Rochor Beancurd. Filled with lots of carbs and fillings of potato and curry, this one buck deal is so much better than a mere hollow you tiao! This curry puff is actually pretty spicey too, and the braided top is thick and crunchy, just the way I like it.…Read More

Dracula and the pacifier
Mad For Garlic
2012-01-28
I used to be a frequent for Mad for Garlic and rested well for a year after there was no other promotions. Coming back as I have a coupon from Citibank with my cousins, herein I introduce to you today things I tried for the first time that day.The dracula garlic bread for instance, was called dracula for the full-cloved garlics placed in their clear oil sauce in the middle for you to eat with the bread, hence, dracula garlic bread! Or, more like anti. This is NOT Recommended for those who do not like garlic! The huge cloves would already intimidate your inner vampires. And it was a tad spicy although they say it would have 3chilli rate! The salad however is a win - everyone should order the caesar salad, which could serve 2-3 girls for a lunch or dinner meal, or a sharing plate for 5-6 people! Fresh huge green leaves topped with croutons and bountiful of cherry tomatoes, and topped with a lot of cheese, this is one of the nicest salads ever eaten!…Read More

sesame ball
Yong Soon You Tiao - Food Republic
2012-01-28
Taking a break from walking around jalan-jalan, those wee hours between 4-5pm is just the time where your brain urges you to chew on something. When bought, it was probably cooked already for hours back, so it was hard and cold. My usual favorite of warm, chewy and crispy crunchy goodness in a ball has dissolved into a stale cold piece. If it was warm, it wouldve been better, as this ball isn't as sweet as other places, suiting my level nicely.…Read More

Ebi Ramen the Great!
Marutama Ra-Men
2012-01-28
This was the menu a year back specially only for the Jakarta Branch. Marutama is known for the chicken soup broth ramen which was very strong in its flavoring and juices. And this was the bowl I was looking for - the mix of chicken broth and sweetness of ebi juice into one hearty bowl. Not exactly hearty as this ramen bowl is pretty tight and small than a usual ramen which are in authentic Japan, massive. It tasted just the most delicious way as I wanted it - this is the best choice for those who had trouble finishing the only original chicken soup, as I had a hard time - it was so strong! This has the nice amount of rich chicken with the fresh, lightness of seafood ebi and a spritz of lemon. Ramen was springy and sluuuurpingly deeeelish. $15 was the price you gotta fish in. It is a bit on the ex side judging from portion, but taste cannot lose.I even have forgotten halfway to add in sesame and fried garlic!!! Which means, the bowl is good as it comes to your way without any other condiment.Service was A+, the waitress was caring and attentive, noting on when our water glass was halfway empty and asking how is the food.Best thing was, THERE WAS NO Q!…Read More

dum bee dum briyani on banana leaf
Samad's Tekka Dum Briyani
2012-01-27
It does look as good as it is in the bright picture! Service was fast, as one of the guys from the resto just came by and say "would you like to eat nasi briyani mutton satay etc." whatever on their menu was. And that's how my friend and I ate this. From far, I saw the stall was a grade B in cleanliness.Looking at the menu, the mutton briyani. The mutton was very soft so it was easy to bite and it was fairly a huge side, but the portion of the rice wasn't as much as it used to be for briyani (IT IS HUGE RIGHT, LIKE COVERING THE ENTIRE HUGE PLATE) but in this case, it wasn't much. It's given nicely on a banana leaf, adding points for service, laid on top of a tray. The curry and cream was given abundantly and vegetables was given at a scoop mount. Rice was very flavorful with the spice, a bit of pepperish side but it was good, I was perspiring when eating! But now, I do believe for $6 you used to get a hefty amount, now you get lesser.Service was then on spot, as he served up on the table and brought our meal, because he did approach to us first. So that quite counts as a nice serving point in a hawker center! …Read More

Fried seafood udon to try!
QQ Noodle House
2012-01-27
If you know the branch in Bugis is always pretty full during lunch hours, the Park mall is rather quiet on weekends but full with people working on weekdays.by the time know, that I've been on a noodle roll and I've been probably beaten out by now of noodles rightMore or less so, but it doesn't stop me from other noodle types!Seeing what looks good on the menu that is rarely tried out, the fried udon with seafood looks tantalizing enough for me to go ahead and place an order. I was expecting the chewy udon in return with again, fishball pieces here and there in sweet black sauce used to 'fry'.While a bowl on the table was cold, but mine was piping hot, certified it just has been cook out of the wok. Udon was not as chewy as expected, but the sauce was just right and the chilli given by them on request was pretty spicey! Portion was so-so in between and I was still hungry after that, but it should be OK for the rest, the seafood they gave was plentiful!…Read More

Noodles after lessons
100 Minced Meat Noodle
2012-01-27
Lessons located at Northbridge, this place was fairly close by and to run an errand at BBC complex.Getting dried noodles, changed to kway tiao (avoiding egg noodles for the moment for CNY fatness issues), I also expected the soup with fishball and fish cake to be GOOD.Well, it was, and the portion is on the bigger side too. Sauce was not spicy although this image looks red, mind you, but the minced meat wasn't as neutral-tasting like I find at most places, where actually pork should be sweet tasting, right!…Read More

Huge Set Menu Udon and Don Meal!
Café de Waraku
2012-01-25
To cure the starving point of my evening night after not snacking in between afternoon, the Waraku set meal including a bowl of gohan, katsu, miso and udon was the best choice. For $20+, you are entitled to get everything in a go!Rice and katsu was self explanatory and at least well-done in frying. Not too much grease and the crisp is just correct, breaded in bread crumbs. Rice was warm when served. Udon was also as of normal standard with clear broth soup and the white chewy noodles with your seaweed and those pink colored fish slices. Miso wasn't too salty. For this I'm going for the portion with the good price given but Waraku definitely knows well of course what they are cooking, and its what you expect.I had to forgive the service was slow becuase it was a full house, it was rather hard to call in a waiter, as they're hard to come by and I had to just went over to the pitcher and get the water myself.…Read More
