Grandma's Birthday Cake. Smile Dec 02, 2013

I wanted to surprise my dearest Grandma with a beautiful cake on her birthday. I went to a well-known bakery in Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10. I was told i have to select at least a 1 KG cake for approximately $42 or higher then to pay at least $15 for their workmanship to have basic design on the cake. I walked away without placing an order.

 
I was at AMK Hub just other day and visited Four Leaves. I saw the picture of this cake in their catalogue and i wanted it without much hesitation. The price stated is $41 for 21 cm inclusive of the design work on the cake. The price is definitely much more reasonable as compared to the other bakery for a similar cake.

I was told that i need at least 3 days in advance to place an order. I was given the selection of Strawberry Shortcake, Blackforest, Almond Fruits Top and Chocolate Classico to choose. I was told that i can choose to pay the total amount in full or partial. I chosen to pay the full amount and i was given the order chit with receipt.

I went back on Saturday to collect the cake. I was served by the same friendly shop assistant. She took out the cake from the fridge. She opened the box to show it to me though she did not pull it out as the cake occupied the entire box and it might not be too easy to put it back. She slotted in 2 pieces of disposable ice pads to raise the cake slightly so it would be easier for me to pull it out later. She asked me to handle it with extra cautious when she passed it to me. I truly appreciate such a good service provided by this shop assistant.

I could not forget the happy smile on the face of my Grandma when i presented the cake to her. And, she agreed that it was a pretty Birthday cake.

 
The Strawberry Shortcake tasted absolutely lovely. The sponge cake was very soft and fluffy with generous bits of strawberry sandwiched in between. The fresh cream was delicious with just the right amount of sweetness.

It was a Happy Birthday for my dearest Grandma and we enjoyed the cake a lot.

If there was one F&B establishment that I would name which has the best marketing and branding team, TWG Tea would certainly be one of the hot picks. The Wellness Group Tea Company, abbreviated to TWG Tea is a Singapore-based luxury tea company with salons across the world. While I first chanced upon this brand of premium tea-leaves in the UK and subsequently in HK, it was only later did I realize that it originated from Singapore!

Singapore's pivotal role in the tea trade was instrumental for the company to decide upon the lion city as the organisation's headquarters. Quite frankly, the tea salon which is characterised by its luxurious layout and presentation had more often than not been intimidating - well a meal there certainly does not look cheap. While it predominantly sells tea, in tea-bags like your usual 'Lipton' English tea, TWG Tea also retails hand made tea-infused food, including savoury items, pastries and desserts. They also prepare accessories such as hampers, tea scented candles and teacups made of gold and platinum which would most certainly impress gift-receivers.

We were in the vicinity of Marina Bay Sands and while we wanted to rest our feet after an afternoon of walk-around, TWG Tea came to mind and after some 15 minutes of queue time, we finally got ourselves a table.

The menu entailed a very comprehensive range of premium and flavoured tea-leaves and would almost certainly satisfy tea-lovers. The only shame was that I am a true coffee fanatic and it would be terribly difficult to have me converted with a cup of mild caffeine from the premium tea.

While we struggled to decide our orders, we eventually settled for the following:

1837 Crepe with Jasmine Ice Cream (S$14 + S$3/-)

 

 
The freshly made crepe was served with handmade berry marmalade made of raspberry, blueberry, cherry and blackcurrant infused with 1837 Black Tea. The ice cream was surprisingly creamy and melted almost instantaneously upon being served as it comes into contact with the freshly baked crepe. While we enjoyed the soft and warm crepe that was baked to perfection with just a slight tan and a slight chewiness, we felt that the fragrant Jasmine flavoured ice cream complemented the dessert well. We also enjoyed the overall combination of the dessert, which had a beautiful tang from the fresh berries and you could taste the richness of the marmalade.

Financiers with Matcha Tea, 2 pcs (S$9/++)

 
We felt that the matcha financiers were rather overpriced. While it was well baked, with a nice crust on the edges, the almond flavour did not come across strong enough. It was probably masked by the matcha powder used in the making. While it made a decent rendition of financier, it certainly did not come cheap.

 
The financiers were served with TWG Tea jelly and whipped cream. These two complemented the matcha flavoured financiers perfectly and the jelly had a subtle sweetness that kept us scooping more! The whipped cream however was light yet rich and the combination with the jelly was simply sublime. We highly recommend to order the other pastries such as madeleines or scones just so you could pamper your palate with this homemade jelly and whipped cream.

Floral tea (S$11/++)

 
Well, as mentioned earlier in this post, I am terrible when it comes to appreciating tea but at S$11/+ per pot for two small cups, I am not sure if it was worth it. On a secondary note, we always preferred traditional English tea rather than floral or scented tea, so I would reserve my comments on this particular signature that was recommended.

 
I honestly think the branding of TWG Tea is brilliant if not, perfect. They have a Caucasian in each and every of their outlet, even in their outlet in Hong Kong at IFC. It exhibits a really 'classy' image especially with the cutlery and interior design of the outlets.

Was the service impeccable? Hardly. We ordered an extra serving of two scoops of ice cream but they were not served and it slipped our minds as well. It was however charged to the bill. If I may be completely honest, TWG Tea would resume to be the place that I turn to if I needed to get some quick gifts for overseas friends but for me to return for a high-tea or proper meal, there would certainly be some inertia.

Meat, produce and even eggs are imported from Japan 4 times a week. The owner wishes to create a Japan in Singapore, so even the exquisite cutlery are imported from Japan.

Chef Shinji Morihara, whose 20 years of experience includes being head chef at Marriott (Japan and Shanghai), Four Seasons (Hong Kong) and the now defunct Inagiku, creates 3 different kaiseki courses for dinner, starting from $98. Lunch starts from $23.

The most expensive, Yume course ($288), has 7 dishes including a starter, a steamed dish, sashimi, grilled beef, soup, tempura and dessert. Initially we thought it was exorbitant but as the meal progressed, we had a growing sense of wonderment at one of the best meals we had this year.

 
The Ex and I both agreed that the dish of the night was the shima aji (striped Jack) fish, mochi and chrysanthemum in a hot pot (pictured above). The fish was first fried to bring out its flavor in the soup (my mom fries her meat before making them to soups too). As a result, the soup was lip-smacking awesomeness. The natural sweetness of the fish soup exploded in the mouth.

The service was top-notch, the ambience refined, and the food spectacular but what I treasured most was the experience. I felt like I was living inside an instagram photo, very dreamy with soft focus around the food. One of the best meals I had this year. It is a little pricy but (I think) understandable because of the cost of ingredients, the rent, the setup, and the tedious preparation of the food. Even if you live in Johor or Batam, it is worth making the trip.

Set amidst the slew of swanky Spanish, European, Belgium and Mediterranean eateries along the beautiful Quayside Isle of Sentosa is a Japanese fine-dining Kaiseki restaurant helmed by Executive Chef Shinji Morihara- who boasts of more than 20 years of experience in Japanese cuisine, welded from acclaimed establishments such as Marriott Hotel Nagoya Japan, Four Seasons Hotel Hong Kong and Fairmont Hotel Singapore.

 
Fitted with oriental touches of Japanese architecture with shōji doors, an extensive use of wood grain and imported Japanese red cedar for the furniture and a decidedly minimalist appeal, restaurant owner Katsutaka Kobayashi had gone though great lengths in reconstructing the 40-seater authentically Sukiya-style right down to the last detail for the discerning diner to enjoy a sensorial experience.

 
While the primary focus here is on Kaiseki cuisine, there are Omakase Sets from $175 and Set Lunches from $75. The recently introduced Ala-Carte menu also offers a few pocket-friendly alternatives.

Trying out their YUME (Dream) Course at $288++ per person, we were served 7 courses specially curated by Chef Shinji to ensure we had the complete Kaiseki experience in its truest art form made only from the freshest seasonal produce imported directly from Japan and finished with exquisite plating.

 
The Steamed Dish of Short Neck Clam and Winter Melon egg custard topped with Tomato sauce was Chef Shinji's interpretation of Chawanmushi. Tasting refreshingly interesting, this seemingly simple egg custard steamed in a tea bowl was a reflection of the creative diversity of Japanese gastronomy executed here at Ezoca.

 
Main Course was a Grade A4 Wagyu Japanese OMI Beef Tenderloin with Organic vegetables charcoal grilled to perfection, served with a trio of dipping sauces- Ponzu, Mustard and Himalayan Salt. Smooth and velvety with a rich juicy flavour that lingers on your palate, there was no questionable doubt about the quality of this piece of red meat. The fried pumpkin, lotus root and french beans too were delectably crunchy.

 
Dessert was a delightful end with a trio of home made treats. The Caramelized Apple and Homemade Red Bean paste Sandwich was unlike any store bought variety with its delicate wafer so crisp and chewy. While the accompanying cup of superbly sweet and crunch Japanese KYOHO Grapes topped with Wine Jelly beckons with its bright color. And finally ending off with a slice of Yubari Melon with its glowing orange flesh and tempting sweet aroma. No better way of completing the meal.

It's that time of the day again. Lethargic, listless......stomachs growl especially enthusiastically around noon and evening. But I have discovered a new delicious place in the CBD area, thanks to fellow foodie friend who introduced me to the Lawn.

 
Unlike the Biopolis outlet, one orders the salad just like how you order your Dimsum on a piece of paper. After payment, receive this buzzer and wait patiently for the food. I actually prefer this style as one does not have to wait for people queuing in front to think and pick their own toppings and dressings.

 
The basic salad base option comes with 5 toppings and 1 dressing at $9.90. But don't forget to tick the boxes of "grilled items". The wide gamut of chicken, beef and seafood--prepared with expertise--suggests that there is absolutely no lack of protein.BUT....STOP, is it all meat? NOPE! Vegetarians can enjoy grilled asparagus, eggplant and mushrooms too!

 

For my customized salad, I picked the butter-seared Pacific dory which came in a huge slab piled on a vibrant mix of celery, olives, Beetroot, corn and crunchy granola. The giant salad bowls which were as big as claypot rice, left me in awe and I'm convinced it can easily feed any voracious eater.
For my dressing, I chose the Wasahoney, a green mixture of wasabi, honey and mayonnaise that looked like kaya, since I love spicy stuff. It threw me off the hooks as I was not expecting the wasabi to be so piquant that it choked my nostrils. A good sign that quality ingredients are used.

 

Carbo-lovers eat well here too. The olive rice, cooked according to the Teochew recipe of the owner's grandmother, is a tastier substitute for white rice that you can indulge with new grilled items like tender Cajun-style/Teriyaki chicken or even the garlicky Mixed Mushrooms. For soup lovers, consider the soup shot ($2) or soup bowl ($4). We did not have to dive deep before finding loads of black mushroom bits in the velvety soup.

 
By mixing and matching your favourite toppings and dressings, I'm sure one can never be bored of the food here. A meal at this outlet may cost more than a basic salad meal elsewhere, especially if you are famished. This is not because you are in the heart of CBD area, but because you are eating remarkably well.
