Went by to Roast @ One Rochester for some great food and great company.

Our table of 9 was served with an expense of Communal Menu, great desserts and dazzling drinks. lol *So dazzling that I see stars lol

To me, its always about getting the basics right before going on to conquer greater grounds.

I love their Grilled cod fillet with fennel and blood orange salad which is on the top right hand corner next to the Roast Logo. The chewy affair of the fish together with the caramelized layer on the top gives the cod fillet a must-go.

Their Tiger prawn salad with cous cous, pomegranate, mint and persian feta is fascinating as well (see top left hand corner next to the Roast Logo). This is the first time I encounter pomegranate with prawns. Not just that the prawn is fresh, but put together with the pomegranate, their crunchy-ness is a whole new chapter to the dish.

Their starter, The "Nibble" Platter which includes foie gras parfait, game terrine, is a very non-routine dish. In simple terms, they are goose liver moose and rabbit meat (see photo right below Roast Logo). What a new experience it was. That simple softness of the moose with the exotic taste of the goose liver. That game meat texture on a pastry... its like walking on unchartered grounds in the woods of the Twilight movie.

Their dessert of Grande Assiette , I especially love their coffee creme brulee. Its quality. Period. The coffee bean scent, that tinge of sweetness... Its Perfect~ *MuAcKz!

The drinks... How can the night be complete without them right?
Sequencing from left to right, *Lychee Martini, BMW (Baileys, Martini and Whisky) and Cosmopolitan.

Need I say more?
Go figure ;)

My favourite waffle place! Smile Sep 17, 2013

Located in Serangoon, this places needs no introduction because this chocolate cafe is super famous for their waffles! I was already full to the brim that day when I visited the cafe but their waffles are so yummy till I can literally finish the whole piece by myself. The 8 inch waffle is crisp on the outself and fluffy and moist on the inside. People complain about their small scoop of ice cream, but it doesn’t affect me at all because I love eating plain waffles ($6), with just some maple syrup and butter, that’s all.

Not a huge space but it is a nice place to chill and have a plate of waffle (and maybe chocolates too). lol

Old school laksa only for $2! Smile Sep 17, 2013

Sungei Road Laksa is a humble stall in a coffee shop. There is a long queue when we got there. The stall is manned by 3 ladies when we went on a Sunday morning. One of them was busy filling the bowls with ingredients, another one was busy taking orders while the aunty was filling each bowl of laksa with the gorgeous broth, fueled by a charcoal burner which I believe to be one of the last few existing stall which is still using charcoal. And, THEIR LAKSA IS ONLY $2! lol
Laksa $2

Laksa $2

The laksa is served like a typical Katong Laksa style, with only spoon and no chopsticks. The laksa has a beautiful orange gravy, topped with generous amount of cockles and green laksa leaves.

Here, you don’t get very heavy laksa gravy. It was light, easy to drink but it was a flavourful bowl. You can smell the spices in the gravy, sweet yet mild spicy, infused with coconut flavours and hae-bi in it! And the crunchy bean sprouts added texture to the bowl of laksa. One $2 bowl may not be enough for guys, but it was a perfect size for me. I was slurping up till the very last sip. bowl

The essentials of nasi lemak: Rice. Sambal. And I do concur!

The name literally translated means 'rice in cream'. Coconut cream of course. And progressions in today's efficient world system means boiling the rice in coconut milk these days. But here at Nasi Lemak Kukus, you get your coconut rice steamed the time honoured traditional way. Making sure the calories count!

Now this was a statement that caught my eye.
Was this a glaring reminder for the kitchen staff? A daring guarantee for every customer? Or a subtle challenge for a return visit? Very nicely encapsulated in a mission statement.

I love the rustic laidback feel of concrete walls filled with writings.
A perfect place to kickback and chillax with good food and great music.
The photos and banner help to highlight food choices for the fickle minded customer. smileHelp yourselves to dinner please.

Even as I'm typing this, the unmistakable fragrance of the steamed coconut rice floods my senses. Past midnight, this is a disaster for my heightened senses. The good part about this though, is that Nasi Lemak Kukus stays open till 3am. Yet another foodie find going into the treasure trove for midnight supper club dates! smile

It was only at the checkout counter that I saw how much my little bit of everything cost.

This was an $11 plate of nasi lemak. Now I understood why the serving staff behind the counter topped up my okra for me. The charges per serving are neatly typed and pasted on the glass panel above the dishes.
Still. I'm not sure how my serving of 3 sambal prawns would cost as compared to say 5 sambal prawns?

Costs aside, the rice was chewy and had a good bite to it. It's uniquely different from the nasi lemak rice found in the usual hawker stalls.

The mutton rendang was sedap nya! smile For a non-mutton lover, the meat didn't have the gamey taste I'm afraid of and it was tender to the bite.

Ayam masak merah was a perennial fave for me till tonight. The chicken drumstick was tough and the sauce wasn't at all appetizing.

Two choices on the sambal. I had the spicy option. And boy, that was an instant addiction. If you ever wanted just rice and sambal, I'd give this place a 5/5.

Thanks to Openrice.sg for the invite and to the awesome coordinators- Calvin and Fizah. smile

H-E-A-V-E-N Smile Jun 24, 2010

I love the Chef’s Special (Sashimi platter) $25.00. It’s very fresh! And the thick chucky slices of shashimi spells H-E-A-V-E-N.

Was there with a bunch of friends and we had the Nigiri platter that has Maguro $2, Sake Toro $2, Hamachi (a type of yellowtail) $4, Aburi Hotate $4 and Shime Saba (Mackerel) $3. Out of the five, I like the Saba (Mackerel) best! Special instructions from the chef to eat from the lighter taste to the stronger taste fish and not to dip the Aburi Hotate (Scallops)/the one with pinky paste on top of it on soy sauce. It was very useful to have the chef checking on us all the time to see if we are treating the sushi right.

Must-try item is the Anago $6! This perfectly simmered salt-water eel is slightly less rich and oily than the unagi!

The deep-fried chicken nuggets, Tori Karaage $6 had a good crispiness to it and I was also pleased that the Agedashi Tofu $5 had a slight crispiness before giving way to a sogginess as it absorbed the Dashi Broth which had light notes of the Kombu (Kelp) and Shoyu (Soy Sauce).

But my favourite has to be the Mix Kinoko Foil Yaki $10 was AWESOME! Mushrooms lovers alert! A good mix of Shitake, Enoki and Shimeji mushrooms glazed in a secret special sauce which the chef won’t tell and we just can’t figured out what is it. This is also a must-try.

My vote for drink of the day goes to the cool and smooth Asahi beer! SLurps Aaaaaaah. Goes really well with the California roll $6.

Kampai!
