BigBrekkie Smile Nov 27, 2013

This is one of my favourite restaurant as the restaurant environment is really cosy and quiet, and not much people can be seen here as well. Service staffs are very friendly and really polite too. Bought their Big Brekkie (at $22++) which the portion is quite generous. Toasted bread is soft in texture and slightly crispy on the outer layer. The sautéed mushroom is tasty and not too salty. The scrambled egg is soft and full of the butter fragrant. It may be quite expensive, but for its great taste and nice dining environment, is worth the money!

Salmon Rocket Smile Nov 01, 2013

Whenever I feel like having a super like and healthy meal for my lunch, I will always prefer to go to this restaurant to have my favourite Salmon Rocket Salad as a meal. The restaurant is very cosy and quiet, love those peacefulness here when I can really relax my mind and have my favourite food.

Service here is warm and friendly too. Their Salmon Rocket Salad which cost $15++ is consider value for money as the portion was generous and good enough to fill my stomach. The thick slices of fresh chewy salmon really taste great with no stinky fishy smell in it. The lettuces are very crunchy and fresh as well. THe wasabi dressing make this dish very appetizing and tasty. Delicious!

Brunch at Five & Dime Smile Oct 30, 2013

Interior

It’s not difficult to fall in love with the interior of Five & Dime Eatery if its minimalistic exterior didn’t impress you even a slightest bit. I love how their chairs carry that pop of mint on the sides, breaking that almost synonymous hue of brown throughout the shop. Apart from their robustly chalked up black board menus hung up against the brick wall, my favourite spot has to be the white pegboard holding pairs of totes and frames.

Menu/ Food & Drinks
Five & Dime offers quite an exquisite array of cocktails, which seem to be quite the catch. But it was just past morning and we were looking more for a couple of perk me ups for that lazy Sunday morning — Coffee! But for the young at heart, there's nothing like a frothy Banana Milkshake complete with rainbow sprinkles on top, which tasted really good with the right amount of consistency!

I’d only been to Five & Dime once before, for dinner, more than a year back but I distinctly remember how amazing their Mentaiko Pasta ($18) was. Definitely a must-try whilst you’re there. We were also recommended the Eggs Benny ($16), which didn’t disappoint one bit. The pair of poached eggs looked and tasted just about perfect, with a good and proportionate coat of hollandaise sauce going on.

It might have been the eggs and warm brioche taking centre stage on the plate but the breakfast potatoes and fruit salad did put up a fair supporting act. I certainly appreciated the latter for the two mouthfuls of freshness to ease the heavy combination of egg yolk and hollandaise.

On the whole, I adore the food and decor at Five and Dime in addition to its homey and wholesome atmosphere. My only qualm is its slight lack of convenience. Whilst there is a bus stop just opposite the building, the restaurant/cafe is a fair bit of a walk from the nearest MRT station, Somerset. Drivers needn’t worry about parking because the eatery has their very own car park just past the bright red gates on its left. It’s free too!

when i stepped into five & dime, it was as if i was transported to another realm, outside of singapore. it felt like i was in a cafe in melbourne or america, and i immediately relaxed into the atmosphere. the aroma of freshly brewed coffee held a tinge of that holiday scent (when you're on holiday, places smell different!), the view, and the little reindeer at the door. so cute! smile

the five & dime chocolate ($6) was really interesting! this has to be one of the most unique hot chocolates i've ever tried. there was a subtle hint of hazelnut in it that give it a whole new dimension. it was a pretty small cup though!

we ordered the calamari ($8) for our starter. yup we had a starter for brunch haha! it was covered with a thin layer of flour and fried to a crisp that shattered in your mouth to reveal fresh springy calamari within.

the big brekkie ($22), which, true to its name, was huge. it consisted of your choice of sunny side up or scrambled eggs, pork bacon, chicken chipolata sausages, baked beans, sauteed mushrooms and thick toast. this is your safe go-to order if you want to try everything. i loved how the sunny side ups looked! lol they were done so neatly and purely smile the baked beans were really interesting, with a slightly spicy mexican-like sauce. slightly awkward was the thick toast though. it didnt come with any spread, and nothing on the plate seemed appropriate to go with it.

the buttermilk pancakes ($15) have got to be one of the best pancakes ever!!!!!!!!!!!!! maybe that's the secret - buttermilk! i should totally try this out sometime. the pancakes were super fluffy, yet dense enough that it didnt feel airy. it comes with a choice of chipolata sausage or pork bacon. i felt that the sausages were slightly on the bland side, but at least that made them feel healthier.

the corn beef hash ($16) was something different that you rarely find at other cafes! the corn beef was pretty fragrant, quite interesting! it came with two beautiful sunny side up eggs and breakfast potatoes. the potatoes were super yummy! they were beautifully seasoned, slightly mashed and just simple comfort food.

the eggs benny ($16) were balanced atop a slice of brioche toast that was so incredibly fluffy and crispy at the same time, i loved it! it came with mesclun greens, which balanced the dish wonderfully, the breakfast potatoes (yay score!) and fruit salad - a quirky combination of fruits including kiwis, grapes, strawberries and bananas.

finally, the french toast ($15) came with a choice of pork bacon or chipolata sausage and fruit salad as well! i loved the texture of the thick toast that was fluffy, with a good amount of chewiness. i felt the flavour of the french toast could be further enhanced though. but with the maple syrup that came with it, it was pretty alright smile

the service was very pleasant as well, and we had a wonderful experience.

Five & Dime is a modern concept that blends the nostalgia and trendy style. Black and white, wood and tile combination do not go out of style all time provides an overall classic look. The space is quite limited so be sure to make a reservation to avoid any disappointment. Somerset MRT station is the nearest station and you need to walk approximately 10-15 minutes time to reach the place. Alternatively, there is a bus stop just opposite the café so do check out the directions if you are heading over.

It was a lovely evening with a great companion for dinner. We started off with Soup of the Day @S$7.00. It was a good start with a slice of garlic bread.

Next, we had ala-carte Wings @S$7.00 that serves three pieces of 9-spiced chicken wings. Crispy wings and it was serving pipping hot! Smokes were coming out when we took a bite.

My partner ordered Fish & Chips @S$20.00. Battered shark catfish fillets served with hand-cut fries.Fish batter was very light and cripsy and the fish texture are soft and smooth. The fries tasted crispy and delicious as well. We enjoyed the deep fried battered fish as it was served in smaller pieces and makes us easier to take a quick bite of it.

I ordered Mentaiko Pasta @S$18.00. Spaghetti tossed in creamy mentaiko, topped with more cod fish roe. The pasta was cooked to al dente and the mentaiko sauce was tasted refreshing. But the I felt that the price is overpriced as it does not served any other ingredients except for mentaiko and cod fish roe. I saw some reviews come with yakitori skewer but mine does not come with it. Not sure if the menu had some changes though.

As for the drinks, we ordered 2 Somersby Cider as there was a promotion for happy hours if I remembered correctly. So, we got the deal of S$12.00 for 2 bottles.

Total dinner inclusive of 10% Service charge & 7% GST was S$83.57. Overall dinning experience was pleasant as the serving time was within 20 minutes time and the foods quality was still within our expectation. The restaurant’s ambience was perfect ending for my birthday treats.
