Waiting time can be a little tedious, if you are here after 1800 hours, on a weekend. We reached around 1730 hours, and we have to wait for an hour before we can be assigned to a table. But that's not all. Good thing is, you are able to select your dishes beforehand, and then pass to the usher once you have a table. So, another hour of waiting for the food to be served.
Drinks are ordered separately, so try to attract their attention once you are done with your drinks selection from your table.
Coconut Drink ($6.00). Almost every table has a coconut ordered, and so we followed. Drink is definitely refreshing!
Pork Floss Tofu ($12.00) for a small portion. We ordered this because this is the first time we saw such combination in a seafood restaurant. Thick savory gravy over their homemade tofu and broccoli, topped with pork floss. Tofu is lightly fried on the outer, while inside is firm and mushy, similar to eating beancurd. Thumbs for this dish!
Salted Egg Pork Ribs ($15.00) also comes in Butter and Steamed Pork Ribs in Lotus Leaf. The latter was my initial choice, but it was not available then. Thus, choice between butter and salted egg.
I love their salted egg pork ribs because the meat is easy to bite off and taste of salted egg has jacketed each individual ribs well, and meat is juicy and soft to chew. No more struggles!
Fried Crab Bee Hoon ($55), is sufficient for 2 pax with an add-on serving of bee hoon ($3.00). If you requested for a 2 pax serving, it will costs around $80 for 2 smaller crabs.
It came cooked as black pepper crab and gravy spilled over the bee hoon is just splendid! Love the moist bee hoon and crab that is already cracked before served to table.
It was probably around 2000 hours when we finished our meal, but queue is still pretty long. Based on our total waiting time, the last person in the queue before we left might have to wait till around 2200 hours before able to satisfy the growling tummy!

Categories : Japanese | Restaurant | Sushi/Sashimi

I was hanging out at Dempsey area that day, and in the mood for some Japanese fare, hence Rakuichi Japanese Restaurant came into my mind.   A beautiful Japanese restaurant decorated in rich modernistic meets authentic Japanese design, this restaurant nestles behind some thick canopy, hence giving it a very "in nature" feel; and we were seated alfresco since inside was full house.

We shared the Rakuichi Bento (SGD$48.60) consisting of an assortment of Sashimi, an array of different types of Sushi, some Tempura items, skewered pork and skewered beef (Yakitori) and some sides of corn, edamane and sauteed mini shrimps. The sashimi was rather fresh and the sushi was lovely - we enjoyed the variety. The tempuras were crispy and the Yakitori pork was so succulent and delicious.

Following the above, we also shared the Kaki Totenabe (SGD$16.00) - oysters cooked in miso soup - with tofu and vegetables. This was a really delicious dish with piping hot broth that was sumptuous, and the oysters were fresh and chewy - perfect for a rainy night as such.

Lastly, the Aburi Salmon Ebi Avocado sushi roll (SGD$12.00) - combination of my favorite things such as salmon roe, shrimp and avocado. The pearl rice was fresh and of the right texture, and the seafood items were palatable. We were very full by the time this was served, but we strived to finish it because it was simply too tasty.

Coffee session at Tiong Hoe Smile Aug 17, 2014
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Tiong Hoe Coffee has been around since the 1960s, and is a specialty coffee retail store providing freshly roasted coffee and green coffee beans for wholesale and home roasters alike. It has begun its very new cafe concept, done up completely with rustic furnishing edging towards the vintage Oriental side - think, white marble tabletops like those you were most likely to find in coffeeshops of the past.

For now, they serve aromatic and traditional freshly-brew coffee that comes with no price tags - you simply tip them for the delicious brew! They don't serve food currently but rest assured that plans to do so are definitely underway. The interior of Tiong Hoe Speciality Coffee Store / Cafe is a gorgeous treasure troves - of traditional coffee roasters and other ornaments (some of them are actually in good working order!)
Also, besides retailing of a wide variety of quality coffee beans, they also have various drip coffee makers and supplies for sale. This one-stop coffee supplies store makes it possible for home roasters to enjoy good coffee in the comfort of their homes.

We started with a hot cup of brewed Congo coffee beans. The taste was strong, with fruity notes (especially domineering was that of plums' sour and slightly savoury-sweet hints), and leaving a rather acidic aftertaste.

The next cup was of Ethiopia beans - with floral and nutty notes in its lighter, less acidic flavor. One could see that the coloring was lighter as well.

Next up, we tried the Indian monsooned beans - a very "coffee" flavored coffee, with slight hints of spicy / smokiness, and a rather meaningful story behind its name.
In my excitement to taste the Nicaragua beans (the same ones that Juliana used to demonstrate roasting), I did not manage to take photos. Anyway, the color and flavor were noticeably lighter, with distinctive floral notes in them.

Last but not least, after all the exotic dark coffee, we were treated to a cup of creamy, rich Piccolo Latte that still managed to convey quality beans in the milky concoction and pretty latte art.

The Sweet Potato Salad kicked off the night, a healthy and refreshing dish drizzled with vinaigrette dressing.

The Tau Kwa Salad is a more creative version with crispily toasted tofu nestled among the vegetables.

After seeing the third dish, I felt glad that this cafe is indeed quite different from the run-of-the-mill cafes that mushroomed overnight across the island. They had their distinctive edge and differentiate themselves with the interior design and the menu too. Beef Hash Pie Tee is an extension of the Nonya dish Kueh Pie Tee, but with chopped up beef meat marinated in savoury fashion. I didn't pair it with the little pastry shells because it didn't look like there was enough to go around (just being polite on first encounter with the others, with more familiar friends I'll take it with no qualms). The beef was a little dry, possibly because it was prepared well ahead of time and lost its moisture already. Nevertheless, the taste itself was delicious.

Le Char Kuey with Dry Laksa takes the crown and is extremely recommended. I would dare say I haven't had such a good sandwich in a cafe before - they always run into issues like dryness/too hard/tasteless/uninteresting/uninspired. This sandwich that Flee Away Cafe does is definitely interesting and gave my tastebuds a little jolt to life. There were springy noodles inside with a hint of spiciness and the familiar laksa taste! I think they will do very well cooking the real thing itself too.

This received mixed reviews from my table, some liked it but I found it a little strange. It's meaty crisps that were a little soggy. Thumbs up for the creativity and courage, but taste-wise it's "not very mainstream".

Their Waffle with Gula Melaka Pudding is another out-of-the-world creation. The waffle was not exactly the sort with a crispy exterior and fluffy batter, but more had a thoroughly soft and semi-soggy texture, though not in a bad way. The little sago ball cluster on the waffle was slightly weird but hey, don't we keep digging for sago in many desserts like bobo chacha or mango pomelo sago? Now we have all of them grouped together for convenience. It's a little crafty to use coconut milk and gula melaka syrup because in this part of the world, desserts like these rule... even if the presentation seemed rather random. I don't really know what to make out of this, except I polished the plate off. #DessertFanHere

The more popular and mainstream dessert is this: Irish Cream Mud Pie, also the one I will recommend as a safe choice. This mud pie is actually ice-cream cake in disguise, and sprinkled with chocolate flakes and sauce... who can resist? I know I can't.

So - the verdict on Flee Away Cafe? I think it definitely makes for a unique cafe hopping experience that doesn't involve the typical bicycle-naked-lightbulbs-eggs-benedict kind of combination, and keeps conversations alive with so many things to look at! Food-wise, go with the Le Char Kuey with Dry Laksa and Irish Cream Mud Pie, and the awesome experience is yours to keep.

Brunch at Flee Away Cafe OK Aug 06, 2014
Categories : Café

When I heard about Flee Away Cafe, a cafe with a flee market within, somehow the first image that popped into mind was a large, dim cafe with a tiny flee bazaar within, literally. Hence why when we reached the cafe itself and noticed its pretty, clean-cut and bright interior, it surprised me a little.

There were shelves of interesting items on sale though, and tables converted from old-fashioned sewing machines. I guess it is not the first cafe that has a shopfront selling stuffs on display, because I'd patronised a couple with similar concept before too. It makes for dining and shopping at one stop, so convenient!

The Le Char Kuey with Chicken Curry fillings (SGD$12.50) was served - together with sides of salad and chips). It was basically dough fritters that could be replaced with Tortilla Wraps, for the more health conscious. There were strips of chicken meat and tiny cubes of potato, in a spicy curry sauce - rather delicious, like eating a crispy dough stick curry puff.

The Beau tried the Le Char Kuey with Dried Laksa fillings (SGD$15.50) - served with chips and side salad - another crispy delight with laksa bee hoon within, and some rectangles of dried beancurd (tau pok). It was rather tasty, resplendent with the strong flavor of another local delight.
