For the food here, it may require up to 2 hour long queue. But if you're a morning person, you can drop by at 9am (it opens at 10am) and start queueing. Any later than that, you probably have to queue for at least 1 hour, minimum.

Despite being slightly overrated, I must say some of the dishes here are indeed fresher and tastier than other dim sum restaurants. But what are they exactly? Read on to know.

香滑马来糕 Steamed Egg Cake (1pc) $3.80
The Steamed Egg Cake was smooth on the surface, feels smooth while chewed in the mouth, but the taste was alright. The sweetness level of it was a little too much, it feels like an overwhelm of brown sugar in this piece of egg cake. it was indeed very moist and soft.

黄沙猪润肠 Vermicelli Roll with Pig's Liver (3 pcs) $5.50
The Pig's Liver Vermicelli Roll on the other hand faired better. Fresh sliced Pig's Livers are wrapped with silky smooth vermicelli roll, allowing it to glide down your throat oh-so-easily. I like to eat the vermicelli roll with the sauce that comes with it. If you're not a fan of pig's liver, you can try the Vermicelli Roll with BBQ Pork ($5.50) instead.

鲜虾烧卖皇 Pork Dumpling with Shrimp (4pcs) $5.00
Pork Dumpling, or a name we are more familiar to - Siew Mai, has never ever appeal to me. I would till give it a try as always but they all failed. That's partly because the yellow skin used to wrap the siew mai often taste weird. Right here, I've finally found one that doesn't have that weird taste anymore. For some reason, I couldn't identify the weird taste, could be the taste of the meat filling itself has successfully covered the weird taste coming from the yellow skin, perhaps? But for a person like me who has never liked siew mai, telling you that here at Tim Ho Wan, it was good, you probably wouldn't want to miss it.

香煎菠萝糕 Pan Fried Carrot Cake (3pcs) $4.50
Another king dish of Tim Ho Wan is the Pan Friend Carrot Cake. I'm pretty sure that Radish was used because there were prominent strands of radish all within the Fried Carrot Cake. Although the strands of radish added texture to the very soft carrot cake underneath the pan-fried layer, I thought it was a little towards the bland side though.

晶莹鲜虾饺 Prawn Dumpling (4pcs) $5.50
Though not under the king dishes, the Prawn Dumpling was amazingly good I promise!
I am always not a fan of prawn dumpling because for one to be really nice and delicious, it requires very fresh juicy prawn wrapped in thin layer of luminous skin. At Tim Ho Wan, the prawn dumplings indeed caught my by surprise with its chewy and non-sticky texture, wrapping around a huge succulent prawn.

赛螃蟹春卷 Spring Roll with Egg White (3pcs) $4.20
A usual spring roll often than not has radish, cabbage and minced meat within the fried crispy roll. But the one here isn't quite the same. Instead of minced meat, it's stuffed with crab meat and egg white, and for this reason, it gives a rather different taste. I'm glad to say the spring roll wasn't too oily and yet it was really crispy enough even after airing for a good 10 mins.

鼓汁蒸凤爪 Chicken Feet with Black Bean Sauce $4.00
As for the chicken feet, or some people may call it Phoenix feet, they were another pleasant dish for its sweet and tender skin and soft bones, submerged in the black bean sauce. It's a little spicy but definitely worth it even if you don't take spice.

鲜虾腐皮卷 Beancurd Skin Roll with Shrimp (Deep Fried, 3pcs) $5.50
I actually ordered both the Deep Fried and Steamed beancurd skin roll but I realise I didn't take a photo of the steamed one, so let's make do with the deep fried beancurd skin roll! While I quite like the fresh Shrimp hidden within the beancurd skin roll, the skin was a little tad dry to my likings. The steamed Beancurd Skin Roll with Shrimp ($4.00) faired better as it wasn't too dry. In fact, it was a little slimy but still taste good!

酥皮焗叉烧包 Baked Bun with BBQ Pork (3pcs) $4.50
If I really have to mention that ONE dish that is a must-try, it has to go to their Baked Bun with BBQ Pork! No wonder there's a limit order of a plate (of 3) to each person, The soft crispy skin on the outside, probably coated with sugary butter, gives the bun a sweet finishing touch. Yet on the inside, the bun was stuffed with BBQ pork, completing the fusion of sweet and salty taste.

Nothing can really describe how surprised and in love I am with this bun. Instead of the usual steamed bun, this was baked, giving it a very soft and tender bun skin. If not because of the limit order, I would have taken away more than one set of buns, because they are really too great.

Undeniably, some of the dishes are indeed different from other dim sum restaurants. Just to conclude for you, the must try dishes (in my opinion) are:

1. Baked Bun with BBQ Pork
2. Pork Dumpling with Shrimp
3. Prawn Dumpling
4. Vermicelli Roll with Pig's Liver

The service here is quite fast also. Once you submitted your order u made while queuing, the food comes within 15 mins.

Beary nice bear paws! Smile Aug 01, 2013

Nestled in the heart of where most youths in Singapore come together is a new kid on the block. Actually, I should say...new 'bear' on the block. No, not the real bears but close enough! They call it Bear Bites! This brand is oh-so-famous to those who frequent night markets in Taiwan (It was even featured in Taiwan variety programs). I was honored to be part of the guests for the opening on 27 Jul 2013 at *Scape. It was a rainy day but the rain did not douse out the excitement of both Bear Bites crews as well as hungry people like me.

Bear Bites started in Taiwan back in 2010. While on a holiday in Japan, the founder (Avery) chanced upon a unique fusion concept between Taiwanese steamed buns and Japanese cuisine. An East meets West concept was thus birthed when the idea of creative burger was created. With more than 10 branches across Taiwan within a short period of 3 years, it has not only proven itself to be a success story but a really delicious one too!

Ordering of the burger comes in steps. Yes, you have to follow the rules here. First you choose the meat. There are 2 options to choose from: Karaage Crispy Chicken and Oishi Fish Fillet. I went for the chicken. Step 2, you choose the cute looking pastel colored bear paw buns (they looked like stuff toys...I wouldn't mind having a pink bear paw cushion lol). Options include: Original Milk, Brown Sugar, Yam, Curry, Oat, Strawberry (seasonal) and Squid ink. I opted for milk. The last step was to choose the sauce namely: Mushroom, Sweet & Spicy Thai, Black Pepper, Tartar, Honey Mustard, Golden Cheese. I'm a big fan of mustard so you wouldn't have to guess twice for what I chose! As the burgers are prepared on the spot, mine came piping hot...which just fits right into the rainy weather. The picture above shows Joseph (one of the Singapore outlet owners) making my burger.

I was told that the buns were flown in all the way from Taiwan. To me, this would mean that it is the original recipe. The bun basically taste like chinese man tou, except that it's much softer and slightly sweetened. The thick tomato and lettuce were very fresh and crunchy. The best part of course is the meat! It was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Despite the fact that my honey mustard sauce was spread sparingly across the meat, it didn't soften the crispiness.

My next try was the Chocolate Gelato. This time, I went for the brown sugar bun to compliment my chocolate ice cream. Comes served in little bear paws that is of smaller size than the chicken burger bun. It's a good size for kids. Maybe they should consider having Baby Bear Bites (aka. Happy meal!). Nonetheless, the chocolate was rich and very filling!

Do note that Bear Bites do not sell fizzy drinks, they only have Pokka bottled drinks for health reasons. And I also need to add that the buns are made of organic ingredients.

Please do not mistaken this with Bear Paw Burger in Malaysia. They might look the same but the taste is quite different. Bear Bites comes without the sogginess. Look for the red bear print lantern!

One thing to add, they might want to consider printing 2 receipts. One for the crews to make the order and one for the customer to keep. Coz people with gold fish memory wouldn't really remember what they ordered. So when orders were ready, they didn't know it's theirs tongue

And here's to many more bear paw prints in Singapore! Photo below showing the 2 owners (Left: Avery and Right: Joseph)

This is the price tag for three pax, if you relish dining in a celebrity chef-run restaurant.

Gourmands can enjoy the 14-course degustation menu which many famed food critics have described as pure ‘magic’, or make selections from the ala carte menu, & be awed by Robuchon’s famous bread, cheese, dessert, ice-cream & tea trolleys.

Well, my group of three were simply electrified by their Degustation Menu @ S$565 each, glass of Champagne @ S$45/each & 3 bottles of mineral water @ $18, amounting to about S$2,200 incl tax.

We were impressed from the start, with their magnificent most talk-about bread trolley. Never have I seen such a huge selection of bread!

I picked 3. Ladies will certainly fall in love with their petit bread sizes. It’s great, since I could select more given that they’re small in size.

Service was immaculate. The Maitre d’ asked if we like our bread to be warm before serving. Yum! Even their bread tasted different & they’re sooooooooo good!

What we had:

Imperial caviar on a shivering corn velouté
with golden croutons

Foie gras & potatoes carpaccio,
topped with shaved winter truffle

More delicious bread while waiting...

Black truffle in a hot pastry, onions & smoked ham

Be awed by the 14-course dinner & more @ http://luxuryhaven.blogspot.com/2012/03/s2000-bill-at-joel-robuchon-rws.html!

Well, my 3-hour French affair ended with a goodie bag containing a Lemon Cake to take home & share with my family. The dining experience was divine & the gastronomy meal is sure to please any discerning palate, if you have the money to indulge.

Ayam Penyet & Ayam Bakar.  OK Jul 23, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Indonesian | Halal

This is one of the few shops serving Ayam Penyet in Lucky Plaza. I came specially for other one but it happened to be closed on that day so i went for this one as an alternative choice.

The shop was rather quiet even during the supposedly busy lunch hour. The service was rather prompt. Menu was presented quickly and order was taken attentively. We decided to go with the Ayam Penyet ($6.00) and Ayam Bakar ($6.00). The rice is charged at 0.80 cents per plate.
Es Kelapa Jeruk - $3.80.

Es Kelapa Jeruk - $3.80.

We also ordered one of their special drink to share. It is orange juice with coconut in it for $3.80. It tasted rather strange. The orange juice tasted a little diluted with a rather minimum level of sweetness. It served with a handful of ice cube with shredded coconut. I did not quite appreciate the taste.
Dada Bakar - $6.00.

Ayam Bakar. We were given the choice of thigh or breast meat. We wanted the breast meat. It was nicely grilled before applied a layer of sweet soya sauce to enhance the flavor. The chicken has got a noticeably tenderness. It was served with a slice of cucumber and tomato with long bean and a piece of raw cabbage. The hot chilli soya sauce was served along too. The spiciness and saltiness were rather well-balanced.

Ayam Penyet was another good choice. The chicken breast was fried to perfection to achieve a delightful crispiness. The chicken was 'penyet-ed' to soften the meat. Perhaps I did not eat enough of ayam penyet to do a comparison as I actually enjoyed this particular ayam penyet very much. The sambal chilli was served separately. The level of spiciness was not as fiery as expected. I guess the spiciness has been adjusted to suit the locals well.

The word "Kazan" is known as volcano in Japanese. The numerous newpaper printouts had actually caught my attention as I walked past Tonkotsu Kazan Ramen. Initially I thought that Kazan is actually referring to its level of spiciness - as hot as volcano but as when I took a close look, I realised the "fun" in the meal and decided to give it a try.

"Irrashaimase" - a very loud and warm welcome greeted us upon stepping into the restaurant and gave a very good first impression. Secondly, the server came welcoming us with its menu. Tonkotsu Kazan Ramen was well decorated with the classic feel of a Japanese Ramen Stall similar to what I had visited in Japan. Not only was the utensils and cookery stuffs placed neatly, the ambience was well lited and rather quiet which served as a perfect place to dine over the weekends to keep away from the bustle of the city.

Do help yourself with the freeflow of seasonings on the table ranging from vinegar to shoyu and they even provide garlic with the garlic press for their customers to enhance the taste of their dish.

Proper instructions were pasted on the table to guide and share with customers how to cook a delicious kazan ramen. It had also advised customers customer to stay away from the hot stone bowl.

We ordered the classic Shoyu Ramen to have a taste of its original Tonkotsu broth as it was mentioned on the menu that the broth was enhanced with a special blended soy sauce paste. Each strand of smooth and springy ramen is delectably coated with a flavourful broth. This aromatic broth somehow reminds me of a famous Ramen Stall located in Tanjong Pagar area! Yums!

Shoyu Ramen

I had ordered one of its signature dish, Curry Kazan and the long awaited volcanic eruption performance is about to commenced. The dish was initially served in a hot stone pot and the server had pour half a pot of curry into it, covered it up with the hood and about one minute later, he poured the remaining curry into the stone pot again. Timing was all measured by the little hour glass device on the table as seen in the picture).

The hood was then remove and "ta-da", take a look the end product and enjoy the sizzling sound in the video.

The Pipping Hot Kazan Ramen!

Not only we have to be caution on the pipping hot stone pot, we have to be additional careful and keep a distance from the curry as they may follow the "sizzling" sound and stain our clothing. Do also note that my meal comes with additional bowl of rice to goes along with the remaining curry as the portion is enormous for me, I suggest that the meal can be shared by 2 instead! tongue
Last but not least, if you are thinking of having green tea in this Japanese restaurant, you can find alternatives as green tea is not available in its menu.

The total bill for the night including 10% of Service Charge and 7% GST is well spent for the night as I really enjoyed every bit of the meal.
