Detailed review: http://foodiefc.blogspot.sg/2012/05/shin-yuu-japanese-restaurant-greenwood.html

Another visit to Shin Yuu Japanese Restaurant on a weekend lunch! This visit is my 3rd visit in two years! You can find my previous post here. Shin Yuu is a restaurant that specialises A La Carte Japanese Buffet.

The Seared Tuna Belly Sushi and Shin Yuu Special Aburi Sushi (Salmon) were fantastic - a must try. The Seared Tuna Belly Sushi was a complimentary item that cannot be ordered a second time. The Shin Yuu Special Aburi Sushi (Salmon) was a seared salmon sushi with a smear of mentaiko sauce that brought this item to a whole new level. It was perfect with a melt in the mouth sensation. Luckily the Shin Yuu Special Aburi Sushi can be ordered multiple times!

Another round of Shin Yuu Special Aburi Sushi (Salmon).

Shin Yuu Special Chawanmushi - steamed egg with salmon roe. Definitely one of the better Chawanmushi around topped with mushroom and generous amount of salmon roe! In addition, it was not salty. Had 2 servings of this.

Sashimi Moriawase consist of an assortment of Maguro(Tuna), Hiramasa (Kingfish), Shake (Salmon), Mekajiki (Swordfish) and Tako(Octopus). I must say that the Sashimi was very fresh. Sashimi fans will love this!

Shin Yuu Special Makimono is another must try it is Unagi Rolls with Avocado. Very good combination. Soft and delicate pieces that will break apart if not handled with care. We ordered this despite the fact that there is just the two of us. Testimonial to how much we love this dish!

Cubes of soft, tender and juicy Wafu Steak! Another must try.

What happened to the Spare Ribs Teriyaki which I had during my previous visit? Dry, salty with little meat. Give this a skip.

Tebasaki; Grilled Chicken Wings, marinated with honey! Soft, tender, juicy and well-marinated. If you like chicken wings, order this.

Shishamo, also known as pregnant fish was grilled. It is fresh, no fishy taste and filled with roe! This is my favourite and I had over a dozen of this!

When we were around 70% full, we ordered the Green Salad in Special Dressing. Great dish that acted as an appetiser so that we can have more food. In addition, it was delightfully tasty. Who said that greens can't be delicious. We had 2 servings of this! Yummy!

Kuruma Ebi Teriyaki; Tiger Prawn with Sweet Soy Sauce. Well, you can give this a miss.

Overall, Shin Yuu is still one of my favourite place for buffet as the quality of the food is quite good (Normally in buffets, quality is compromised). Great food, great service (plates are frequently changed, green tea is frequently refilled, orders are taken and served efficiently). My favourites are Seared Tuna Belly Sushi,Shin Yuu Special Aburi Sushi, Shin Yuu Special Chawanmushi, Shin Yuu Special Makimono, Wafu Steak, Tebasaki, Shishamo, Green Salad and Tempura (sweet potato)!

Loong Fatt Tau Sar Piah 龍發豆沙饼 has been operating since 1948 in Whampoa along Balestier Road. Loong Fatt 龍發 sells pastries and is well-know among the older generation for their Tau Sar Piah 豆沙饼; essentially a Teochew biscuit called Bean Paste Biscuit. The Tau Sar Piah are handmade. They are so famous that when Tau Sar Piah is often associated with Balestier Road just like now Laksa is associated with Katong while Chicken Rice is associated with Maxwell (Tian Tian).

Tau Sar Piah 豆沙饼 comes in either sweet or salty versions.

These Tau Sar Piah 豆沙饼 (salty) cost just $0.60 each.

The pastry on the outside was extremely crispy and flaky (even after 2 days). With a buttery fragrant, it was such a joy just enjoying the crust. The salty filling complemented well with the crust as a whole. It was just nice for me, not too salty. So delicious.

I have not been to Bukit Timah Market & Food Centre before but have heard about He Zhong Carrot Cake 合眾菜頭粿. Since we were nearby, we decided to make a slight detour and give it a try.

Carrot Cake $2

We visited the hawker centre on a weekend afternoon at around 230pm. Although the hawker centre was half full and it was non peak hours, we had to wait a good 10 minutes before we were serve we received our carrot cake. I wonder how long would the waiting time be if it was peak period. Carrot Cake $2

The white Carrot Cake $2 was delicious. It was very well fried. Some parts were crispy and firm while the others were soft. It had the right amount of eggy flavour, flour, radish and chye poh. In addition, there was a hint of smokey fragrance.

Shiok Maki as really shiok! Smile May 02, 2016

Categories : Japanese | Sushi/Sashimi

Koh Grill & Sushi Bar located at level 4 of Wisma Atria Shopping Centre, next to Food Republic Food Court probably needs no introduction. It's Shiok!!! Maki has been highly raved about on the social media. This sushi bar can get very crowded during peak periods and it is advisable to make reservations during these periods.

I have heard so much about Koh Grill & Sushi Bar for quite a few years but had not have the chance to visit although it is centrally located; near ION Orchard. After much procrastination, we made reservations and proceed to visit during lunch on a weekday. I was surprised that there was no queue. Pitan Tofu $4

The Pitan (Century Egg) Tofu $4; chilled tofu served with homemade paste was unique.

Pitan Tofu $4

The paste had a very strong unique century egg flavour. It provided a strong taste to the bland tofu. In addition, the tobiko (roe) provided a distinct crunchy texture of the soft tofu. I quite like the taste of this dish. Do note if you are not a fan of century egg, you are likely to dislike this dish as the flavour of the century egg is overwhelming.

Aspara Buta Maki $3

The Aspara Buta Maki $3 was essentially charcoal grilled Asparagus Pork Belly Roll.Aspara Buta Maki $3

Although it was slightly charrred on the other side, I liked the fact that the asparagus retained its crunchiness providing a different texture. In addition, it had a smoky flavour.

Shiok!!! Maki $16.80

We ordered the highly raved about signature Shiok!!! Maki $16.80 sushi. Its photo appears in nearly 80% of all photos in Instagram and Facebook tagged with the name of this restaurant. Priced at $16.80, the Shiok!!! Maki was not cheap. It comprised of a combination of charcoal grilled eel, avocado, sushi rice wrapped with lightly roasted salmon and topped with cheesy mayonnaise and generous serving of tobiko (roe). Shiok!!! Maki $16.80

After trying a piece of Shiok!!! Maki, I was won over. The combination of taste and texture was heavenly. It was hard to stop at one. Now I know why this had been widely raved about. Its never too late!

Sukiyaki Beef with Ramen $16

The Sukiyaki Beef with Ramen $16 consisted of a mixture of assorted vegetables, tofu, beef and ramen in broth. Sukiyaki Beef with Ramen $16

This was easily the worst dish. Nothing fantastic and it did not appeal to us. The other 3 dishes were just too outstanding. It did not help that the homemade broth was on the salty end.

Overall, the food was decent. I liked three out of the four dishes ordered. Mainly, because we did our research before coming (it was not hard, there are so many reviews on this place). We will be back for more!

Delicious Chicken Rice! Smile Dec 07, 2015

Categories : Hawker Centre | Chicken Rice

Leong Yeow Famous Waterloo St Hainanese Chicken Rice 亮耀馳名四馬路海南鶏飯 is a famous chicken rice stall tucked away at a corner of Waterloo centre in a coffee shop. The nearest MRT station is Bras Basah (Circle Line).

During meal times, this stall nearly always garner the longest queue in the coffee shop.

Steamed and Roasted Chicken Rice $5.70

As I could not decided whether to order steamed or roasted chicken, I decided to order both. Hence, my chicken rice cost $5.70.

The chicken rice was fragrant and not too oily. However, some parts of the rice were a little too dry.

Steam and Roasted Chicken

Once the chicken meat are cut onto the plate, they are drizzled with soy sauce and I suspect sesame oil was added too.

Steam and Roasted Chicken

The Steamed Chicken with its succulent meat was decently executed. As for the Roasted Chicken, I thought it was even better executed. The exterior of the Roasted Chicken was yummilicious. Slightly crisp yet chewy skin, it was immense with aromatic blend of seasoning and flavour. Very addictive. The fragrant and flavour penetrated into the meat. If certain part of the meat was less tough, this would have been perfect!

As with every chicken rice, the chilli sauce is a must! The chilli sauce at Leong Yeow was addictive. Very tangy and spicy. It complemented well with the chicken meat. Not for the fainted hearted, especially if you are one who can't take spicy food.
