Penang Delights is a hawker stall located at S11 in Ang Mo Kio selling Penang Prawn Mee, Penang Lor Mee, Prawn Dry Mee and Pork Ribs Mee. Judging by the Lianhe Wanbao 联合晚报 and Channel U articles, this stalls seems to be famous for its Penang Prawn Mee and Penang Lor Mee. If you have difficult locating the stall, its just next to Rasa Sayang Western Food 啦莎沙央西餐.

Although there was a queue at the stall, they cook and serve the noodles quite fast. Before I knew it, it was my turn to order.

The prawns were fresh, firm and sweet. Partially de-shelled, with its head and tail still intact. A nice gesture as this made it easier to enjoy the prawns. The prawn broth was tasty and had an intense umami flavour that could only be achieved after boiling the prawn shells, heads and pork bones for long hours. However, it was not exactly mind blowing. Overall, the Penang Prawn Mee was quite decent, but not the best around.

Not impressed Cry May 04, 2013

Categories : Hawker Centre | Noodles

Heng Heng Fishball Noodle located at Albert Centre Market & Food Centre specialises in fishball noodles. At the hawker centre you are spoilt for choice as there are so many stalls selling a wide variety of food. There were at least 3 stalls selling fishball noodles.

I decided to try Heng Heng Fishball Noodle as there was a queue at the stall. (As you may notice, I am a typical Singaporean haha, goes where there's a queue)

I queue for around 20 minutes before I got to order my food.

I ordered the dry version of the Fishball Minced Meat Noodle. The fishballs, meatball, meat dumpling, fish cakes and minced meat were served in a bowl of soup, separately from the noodles. As usual, I upsized my order to $3 instead of $2.50 (that's how greedy I am).

Don't be mislead by the photo above. The portion of noodles (mee pok) given was huge; a whole chunk! The noodles was topped with pork lard and spring onion to increase the fragrance. I gave it a good mix as the seasoning was at the bottom. I had a hard time mixing the noodles with the sauce as the noodles was cluttered together in a lump. The noodles was very disappointing, it was overcooked. I did not finish it.

The bowl of soup chocked full of ingredients fared better. They are very generous with their ingredients such as fishball, fish cakes and also minced meat. The soup was laden with MSG.

Overall, I would say that Heng Heng Fishball Noodle are very generous with their ingredients. But their Fishball Minced Meat Noodle was really disappointing. Maybe they will fare better with their Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle. For now, I doubt that I will be back anytime soon as there are so many more stalls for me to try. And even if there are none I want to try, I will stick to Angel Horse Teochew Fish Soup or Four Seas Fried Hor Fun.

ps: This hawker centre needs better ventilation. It is quite warm, in fact, it is down right hot. Definitely not a place for the first date. But there are gems in here worth the wait and heat for. For example the Fish Soup at Angle Horse Teochew Fish Soup and Seafood Hor Fun at Four Seas are worth a try if you are there.

Good, but pricey  Cry Feb 02, 2013

Categories : Food Court | Kids-Friendly

Northpoint Food Court has undergone a revamped and now the food court is run by Kopitiam. Previously, before the renovation, this was no doubt the most popular stall in the food court with a long queue that can stretch to as 10 to 15 people during meal times.

This time there was only 3 person at the stall, not a queue. (I think I know the reason why there was no queue... read on to find out)

Remember how in my previous post in 2010 I mentioned that the price of the Chicken Biryani Set has increased from $4.50 to $6? Well, this time there is another revision in price to $7. I can understand that the price has gone up as the rental expenses are bound to increase (after the revamp) and inflation rate in 2011 in Singapore surged to 5.2%. What made me unhappy was that the 2 pieces of crackers (which are my favourites) are no longer provided in this set. Increasing the price and cutting down on quantity or quality is a big no no to me.. (that's not the way to do business).. ok enough ranting.

The Chicken Biryani Set was served with chicken, vegetable (of your choice) and rice. A very generous portion of rice was given. Each grain of rice was well cooked and curry drizzled over it, it was delish. The chicken flaming red in colour was not overly spicy. Inside, the meat was soft and tender.

I can't help but wonder if the lack of queue was due to the price increase couple with the decrease in portion. After all, last time there will always be a long queue without fail. I doubt I am eating this anytime soon. The food was good. But this is too pricey. I am better off eating other stuff.

Orange Ciabatta Toast Smile Jan 31, 2013

Categories : Singaporean | Café

First ate at Good Morning Nanyang Cafe at its Chinatown’s outlet. Back then there was only that outlet and I have not started this blog. The Chinatown outlet was too far for me to visit frequently. I was thrilled when I heard that they have recently opened another outlet at Sembawang Shopping Centre. I have been craving for their Orange Ciabatta Toast for sometimes!

Good Morning Nanyang Cafe is similar to Yakun, Killiney and Toast Box seling breakfast sets such as Kaya Toast, half boiled eggs, coffee/tea. Their differentiation point is their kaya(which is home-made) and Orange Ciabatta Toast.

Decided to visit this place for late lunch (230pm) on a Sunday.

Good Morning Nanyang Cafe seems to have undergone some changes. The signage has changed. The menu has changed with some new items. The price has also changed. One thing I must mention is that their location at Sembawang Shopping Centre is a prime location! It is located Just along the main entrance of the shopping centre. With the glass walls, anyone who walks into the shopping centre will definitely see Good Morning Nanyang Cafe!

Moreover, noticed that the shop was quite crowded (230pm to 4pm). More than Fish & Co next door which was virtually empty except for one customer.

Notice the sink hidden at the left? Now you can crack your half boiled eggs and eat your toast with ease without the need to walk to the toilets to wash your hands.

The tea was too sweet. Should have ordered their coffee instead since everyone (online) has been praising about its coffee.

Queue number tag for the rest of the orders (Orange Ciabatta, Laksa and Mee Rebus).

Surprisingly, the Laksa was served faster than the Orange Ciabatta. There were pieces of dried toufu, fish cakes, hums, 1 whole piece of hard boiled egg, a piece of prawn accompanied by thick bee hoon. The prawn was firm and has been de-shelled, it was fresh. The laksa gravy was slightly spicy. As a whole, it was not lousy nor was it fantastic. Felt it could have been more fragrant and that more dried shrimps could be added. For now, I would still prefer 928 Yishun Laksa (have been almost 1 year since my last visit there).

I am not an expert in eating Mee Rebus (can’t comment much). The sauce was not bad accompanied by yellow noodles, beansprouts, toufu, 1 whole hard boiled egg, 1 piece of lime and pieces of green chilli.

Ciabatta is an Italian white bread made with yeast and wheat flour.

The Orange Ciabatta is unlike the tradition toast you get in Yakun and is much softer. It is baked with orange peel served with butter and kaya spread. It arrived warm and came slightly later than Laksa! (though that Laksa would come later as some cooking is required. Much effort has been done to make this Ciabatta.) Oh yes, did I mention that the kaya is home-made. The Kaya tasted different from Yakun’s and was much more fragrance (not overly sweet) with a hint of coconut. I can eat this everyday! Yummy!

The Orange Ciabatta is a must try! Because of this item, I would rate this as a ‘die die must try!’ store.

The good news is that there is free shuttle bus to Sembawang Shopping Centre for residents living in Yishun, Sembawang and Woodlands. The bus service is quite frequent. Operating hours of the bus service is stated in the flyer above.

Dropped by Crystal Jade La Mian Xiao Long Bao located at Bugis Junction for dinner.

The menu cover page has changed. Looks so colourful and seems to be targeting the younger generation too. Moreover, with a tagline of 'King of Noodles & Tim Sum'.

Weird that Crystal Jade uses Tim Sum instead of Dim Sum.

We ordered the Steamed Pork Dumpling or you can call it Xiao Long Bao (XLB). The XLB is one of Crystal Jade's signature dish. It is served in bamboo basket. The xiao long baos must be eaten hot when they are served. The skin is thin yet does not puncture easily. Inside, it is filled with tasty pork broth and tender pork fillings. Matched with vinegar and ginger which enhances the taste of the tender pork, it is heavenly.

Looks delicious?

Here's how the Spicy & Sour Soup Noodle with Shredded Pork & Beancurd looks like after stirring it. Crystal Jade's la mian (handmade noodles) is one of my favourite. The spiciness and sourness of the Spicy & Sour Soup Noodle with Shredded Pork & Beancurd was perfect for me. Not too sour yet spicy. Shiok! Moreover, each strand of la mian was cooked to perfection, it was soft, springy, thin and flavourful. The whole combination was perfect and delicious!!

Where's the chicken wings?

Well, I am glad they served it separately so that the wings will not be soggy. Other parts of the chicken wings was missing. Moreover, the wings were quite oily. Inside, the meat was slightly dry. Not as delicious as I expected.
La Mian was perfect, similar to the ones served in the spicy & sour noodles. However, the La Mian Soup base was salty. The prawns in it was not fresh. Stuck to the shells and meat was not firm. The dumplings were average. To be frank, I felt that this dish was terrible compared to the other dishes in the noodles/la mian menu.

You might have read in earlier post that I am a crazy fan of Crystal Jade's chilli. I can literally eat the chilli alone without anything to accompany it while waiting for the food to come. Right amount of spiciness, somewhat crispy to me. How do they make it?

Overall, the dishes such as Sour and Spicy Noodle and Xiao Long Bao are delicious! (and not forgetting the chilli!). But I certainty will not be ordering the Mega Bowl Soup La Mian. Price wise, it is quite affordable and value for money. Where else can you get such price at restaurants and with such good food! As for service, the staff are prompt and efficient.
