I have not been to Bukit Timah Market & Food Centre before but have heard about He Zhong Carrot Cake 合眾菜頭粿. Since we were nearby, we decided to make a slight detour and give it a try.

Carrot Cake $2

We visited the hawker centre on a weekend afternoon at around 230pm. Although the hawker centre was half full and it was non peak hours, we had to wait a good 10 minutes before we were serve we received our carrot cake. I wonder how long would the waiting time be if it was peak period. Carrot Cake $2

The white Carrot Cake $2 was delicious. It was very well fried. Some parts were crispy and firm while the others were soft. It had the right amount of eggy flavour, flour, radish and chye poh. In addition, there was a hint of smokey fragrance.

Shiok Maki as really shiok! Smile May 02, 2016

Categories : Japanese | Sushi/Sashimi

Koh Grill & Sushi Bar located at level 4 of Wisma Atria Shopping Centre, next to Food Republic Food Court probably needs no introduction. It's Shiok!!! Maki has been highly raved about on the social media. This sushi bar can get very crowded during peak periods and it is advisable to make reservations during these periods.

I have heard so much about Koh Grill & Sushi Bar for quite a few years but had not have the chance to visit although it is centrally located; near ION Orchard. After much procrastination, we made reservations and proceed to visit during lunch on a weekday. I was surprised that there was no queue. Pitan Tofu $4

The Pitan (Century Egg) Tofu $4; chilled tofu served with homemade paste was unique.

Pitan Tofu $4

The paste had a very strong unique century egg flavour. It provided a strong taste to the bland tofu. In addition, the tobiko (roe) provided a distinct crunchy texture of the soft tofu. I quite like the taste of this dish. Do note if you are not a fan of century egg, you are likely to dislike this dish as the flavour of the century egg is overwhelming.

Aspara Buta Maki $3

The Aspara Buta Maki $3 was essentially charcoal grilled Asparagus Pork Belly Roll.Aspara Buta Maki $3

Although it was slightly charrred on the other side, I liked the fact that the asparagus retained its crunchiness providing a different texture. In addition, it had a smoky flavour.

Shiok!!! Maki $16.80

We ordered the highly raved about signature Shiok!!! Maki $16.80 sushi. Its photo appears in nearly 80% of all photos in Instagram and Facebook tagged with the name of this restaurant. Priced at $16.80, the Shiok!!! Maki was not cheap. It comprised of a combination of charcoal grilled eel, avocado, sushi rice wrapped with lightly roasted salmon and topped with cheesy mayonnaise and generous serving of tobiko (roe). Shiok!!! Maki $16.80

After trying a piece of Shiok!!! Maki, I was won over. The combination of taste and texture was heavenly. It was hard to stop at one. Now I know why this had been widely raved about. Its never too late!

Sukiyaki Beef with Ramen $16

The Sukiyaki Beef with Ramen $16 consisted of a mixture of assorted vegetables, tofu, beef and ramen in broth. Sukiyaki Beef with Ramen $16

This was easily the worst dish. Nothing fantastic and it did not appeal to us. The other 3 dishes were just too outstanding. It did not help that the homemade broth was on the salty end.

Overall, the food was decent. I liked three out of the four dishes ordered. Mainly, because we did our research before coming (it was not hard, there are so many reviews on this place). We will be back for more!

Freshly Made Chee Cheong Fun  OK May 02, 2016
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Cantonese/Hong Kong | Coffeeshop | Dim Sum

Hong Kong Style Chee Cheong Fun 港式猪肠粉 is located at Mee Sek Food Court along Upper Serangoon Road (5 minutes from Kovan MRT station). This stall is located in the same place as the famous Punggol Nasi Lemak. I was actually having dinner eating my Fried Hokkien Mee from Yi Ji Fried Hokkien Prawn Noodles 福建炒虾面 when I noticed this stall.

What caught my eye was that each piece of Chee Chong Fun was freshly made upon order, the traditional way (using a cloth)! Not factory made! In addition, other than having having Char Siew or Prawns fillings, they had unique fillings such as Mushrooms or Chicken. Apparently, the stall has been operating for more than 30 years.

Mushroom Chee Cheong Fun $2.50

Hence, after gorging 1 plate of Fried Hokkien Mee, I ordered a plate of Mushroom Chee Cheong Fun $2.50.

Mushroom Chee Cheong Fun $2.50

Soy sauce and sesame seeds were added over the Chee Cheong Fun. From the taste of it, I believe that a little sesame oil was added with the soy sauce resulting the extra flavour in the sauce. The rice rolls were thin and the slices of mushroom were fragrant. The chilli at the side was terrible. Dry, not fragrant and a little spicy, it was not my 'cup of tea'. Overall, it was quite a decent plate of Chee Cheong Fun, but its not the best.

Surprisingly good Smile Apr 12, 2016

Lam's Abalone Noodle Restaurant 阿南鲍鱼面 was established by a person known as Ah Lam. He first started out in the early 1950s selling "Mini Wok Noodle" before being one of the first to sell abalone noodle in a coffee shop. Today, the Lam's Abalone Noodle Restaurant which he found has 3 outlets (addresses are appended at the end of this post).

We visited the outlets in Marina Square which is located at level 4; the same level as the The Gallerie (Food Court), Wee Nam Kee Chicken Rice, Hotpot Culture and The Corner Place (Korean BBQ). The crowd on a weekend evening.

Lam's Abalone Noodle Restaurant has its own seating capacity which was largely under-utilised during my visit on a weekend evening. One of the reason could be because most people would bring their food to the food court to join their friends or families. Menu Menu

The menu which ranges from noodles (e.g. abalone noodles, mini wok noodles, etc) to Salted Baked Chicken rice, dumplings soup to smoked duck!

Signature Specialty Noodle $5.20

I ordered their Signature Specialty Noodle $5.20 which came with fish ball, sliced meat, minced meat, vegetables, seaweed, a prawn, half an egg, fish skin and crunchy pork lard. It was so full of ingredients that you would not be able to see the noodles (mee pok) underneath! It is similar to Bak Chor Mee (Minced meat noodles)Signature Specialty Noodle $5.20

I was impressed with this bowl of Signature Specialty Noodle. The mee pok mixed with the pork lard and special sauce was just so fragrant and flavourful! The sauce made a huge difference. It had such a unique and delectable flavour that the more I ate it, the more I love it. The downside was that the prawn was not fresh. Nevertheless, I quite like this bowl of noodles! Teochew Dumplings Soup $3.50

The Signature Specialty Noodle was so good that it ignite my taste buds. I was still hungry (after wolfing down the noodles) and longed for more. Hence, I made my way back to the counter and ordered a bowl of Teochew Dumplings Soup $3.50 with high expectations.

Teochew Dumplings Soup $3.50

It was a big mistake. Ouch. We both agreed that the Teochew Dumplings were badly executed. It was tasteless and the skin was just too thick.

Original Sin (Holland Village) Smile Mar 10, 2016
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Middle Eastern/Mediterranean | Restaurant | Vegetarian

Original Sin is a Mediterranean Vegetarian restaurant located at Chip Bee Gardens less than 2 minutes walk from Holland Village MRT (exit A) station. The restaurant offers both alfresco and indoor (air-conditioned) dining. As we made reservations, we decided to sit indoors as the weather was scorching hot these days. In addition, we did not want to feed the mosquitoes.

We visited during lunch time on a Saturday. During lunch hours, they had Set Lunch available during lunch hours. The set lunch consist of a Starter (choice of Soup of the Day/Green Salad), Mains and Dessert at $26. All of us ordered the set lunch.

Minestrone Soup (Soup of the Day)

Most of us including myself ordered chose the Soup of the Day as our Starter. The Soup of the Day was Minestrone Soup. The soup was full of ingredients such as carrot, cabbage, tomato, spaghetti, etc. The soup itself was not well balanced in taste, I felt that it was a tad too sour and something seems to be lacking.

Green Salad

A friend of mine ordered the Green Salad.

Spaghetti

For mains, I ordered Spaghetti which was cooked with zucchini, olive, cherry tomato, tossed in tomato basil sauce and parmesan cheese. The chef executed this dish quite well. What was lacking was that they could have been more generous with some of the ingredients such as zucchini.

Tofu Burger

My friend ordered the Tofu Burger which was served with wedges and salad greens. This was a hit among us; in a league of its own.

Tofu Burger

The Tofu Burger consisting of tofu and lentil pattie was surprisingly tasty. Although the patty was soft and crumbled easily, we love it! The potato wedges which came with potato skin was also nicely done. In addition, the entire dish was not soggy.

Mediterranean Wrap

The Mediterranean Wrap which was essentially tortilla wrap filled with chickpea and pumpkin spread, grilled eggplant, feta and salad was a dish which most of us did not appreciate. The main reason was because we were not a fan of chickpea which had a unique taste and smell.

Warm Chocolate Cake with Vanilla Ice Cream

For desserts, we had Warm Chocolate Cake with Vanilla Ice Cream. The chocolate cake was a tad too dry. The molten dark chocolate that flowed out from the centre of the cake was rich and dense. It was so good that it made the chocolate cake seems inferior.

The set lunch made the meal more affordable compared to the ala carte menu. However, one should still note that even with the set lunch, at $26++, this is not exactly cheap. Nevertheless, it was an enjoyable meal.
