Egg benedict OK Sep 18, 2013
Categories : Bakery | Café | Brunch

This is quite a famous cafe in Tiong Bahru estate. We went there during a weekday at around 12pm and there isn't much of a crowd. There is three different areas to sit in the cafe - the outdoor area, the air conditioned area where you order the food and the backyard which is non air-conditioned but still cooling because of the fans. We sat at the backyard, which is quite a unique experience since it was very quaint. For the food offerings, there is a few different types of food sold - Toasties (bread with fillings) and there is also the all day breakfast menu. I ordered the Eggs Benedict $14 from the all day breakfast menu. The eggs benedict are quite alright, not as runny as I would have liked, but still ok. The runnier the eggs, the more the bread will soak up the yolk which made it more tasty, but the eggs are half runny. It is average as I had better egg benedict before, but if you want something to go with your coffee, this can be a good choice.

Spending per head: Approximately $14

Sour Sally Smile Sep 18, 2013

Categories : American | Stall / Kiosk | Desserts and Cakes

I tried out the yogurt at Sour Sally a few months back and I was quite impressed with its yogurt. The layout of the shop is very appealing to youngsters with the doll and it is quite apparant as most of the other customers are young people. I ordered the mixed flavour of pinklicious (strawberry) and original and I was really fond of its tart taste. The strawberry is more sweet and the original is slightly more sourish and the combination is works well as the tastes balance each other without overwhelming the other flavour. I did not add any topping but on seeing all the reviews here, maybe I should have added the mochi topping as it seems to be a very popular choice.

Daikokuya Ramen OK Sep 17, 2013
Categories : Japanese | Ramen

I was finding a place for dinner together with my wife at Robertson Quay when we saw this ramen place. I remembered seeing it before in Raffles City and hence decided to try the food here. The menu is quite extensive, there are different types of ramen and different types of soup base - miso, spicy miso, shio and shoyu. There is also the tsukemen here which is dipping ramen, where the ramen is separate from the soup. One thing special is that in the menu, there is also mini ramen which is good if you want to try other things and not just eat ramen. I ordered the Sapporo miso ramen. The miso soup is quite adequately flavoured but not too salty. I was able to finish every bit of the soup although my wife chided me for that. The ramen is quite thin and it is not as springy as I would have liked. I guess it may have been very slightly overcooked. The char siu is just average, I have had better char siu before. I wouldn't specially come back here for its ramen as there are other better ramen stalls.

Affordable lunch set Smile Sep 17, 2013

Categories : American | Steaks and Grills

I went to Jack's Place for lunch a few weeks back. As I was caught up in a jam, I left it to my wife to place my order for me. I indicated that I wanted to have steak, so she got the steak for me. I am not very sure what is the sauce that was poured over the steak but it is quite tasty. The sauce is tangy and it went well with the earthly taste of the beef. The beef was cooked medium well and I am quite glad that the chef cooked it well such that there is no blood when I cut into the beef but yet the beef still retains its tenderness. The dish comes with potato wedges and vegetables. I think the broccoli could have been more as there are just two florets of it. The set lunch comes with garlic bread, tea/coffee and dessert of the day so it is quite comprehensive and affordable with my set costing only $13.90++.

Crab Feast Smile Sep 17, 2013
Categories : Multi-Cuisine | Hotel | Restaurant | Sushi/Sashimi | Buffet

I went to Plaza Brasserie last weekend for buffet. Currently, it is the crab feast buffet and there are lots of different types of crabs available like the salted egg crab, black pepper crab, green curry crab and more. I reckon crab lovers will definitely be spoilt for choices with so many different types of crabs available. I quite liked the salted egg crab as it was creamy and very savoury and the salted egg taste lingers a little on the tastebuds. Besides that, I found the other crabs to be alright, though I did not try all since I wanted to enjoy other food as well. I liked their braised sea cucumber with pork. The sea cucumber is soft, though there are also hard ones, but it is still tasty. The pork is especially nice, the meat is very soft as it had been stewed for very long and has already absorbed all of the seasoning put into marinating it. For desserts, there is a DIY ice cream counter where you can add toppings to your ice cream, and cakes, as well as puddings. In all, I enjoyed it a lot. The pricing for adults for weekend lunch is $62++.
