Ah Balling in Ginger soup Smile Sep 17, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Hawker Centre | Desserts and Cakes

I have always tried the peanuts soup when ordering my bowl of Ah Balling dessert so for a change, I decided to order it with ginger soup instead. The ah balling ginger soup is surprisingly nice. The ginger taste is not too overpowering or spicy but it is just a hint of it. I find that it is in fact better than the peanuts soup as there is a greater contrast of taste since the ah balling is sweet. The ah balling fillings are sweet and the skin is not too thick. The fillings range from the conventional peanuts, red bean to more unique flavours like green tea and black sesame. 6 ah ballings together with the soup costs $3.

Teochew Kueh  Smile Sep 17, 2013

Categories : Teochew | Hawker Centre

For breakfast on sunday, my wife and I went to this food centre for a change instead of eating at home. We saw quite a lot of tables having the kuehs bought from this stall and we decided to try it as well. The kuehs are all freshly made everyday and if you want it to be pan fried, it will be fried on the spot. I love the kuehs when pan fried as the outer skin will be crispy and much more fragrant. The kueh fillings are also generous. I ordered one peng kueh, one soon kueh and two vegetable kueh. Because of the glutinous rice in the peng kueh, I was quite full after the end of the meal. The vegetable kueh is my first time trying it and it is surprisingly nice, the filling is moist and flavourful and it is really good. The sweet sauces also helped in flavouring the kuehs, though I think it is really very tasty on its own. Do try it.

Daikokuya Ramen OK Sep 17, 2013

Categories : Japanese | Ramen

I was finding a place for dinner together with my wife at Robertson Quay when we saw this ramen place. I remembered seeing it before in Raffles City and hence decided to try the food here. The menu is quite extensive, there are different types of ramen and different types of soup base - miso, spicy miso, shio and shoyu. There is also the tsukemen here which is dipping ramen, where the ramen is separate from the soup. One thing special is that in the menu, there is also mini ramen which is good if you want to try other things and not just eat ramen. I ordered the Sapporo miso ramen. The miso soup is quite adequately flavoured but not too salty. I was able to finish every bit of the soup although my wife chided me for that. The ramen is quite thin and it is not as springy as I would have liked. I guess it may have been very slightly overcooked. The char siu is just average, I have had better char siu before. I wouldn't specially come back here for its ramen as there are other better ramen stalls.

Sungei Road Trishaw Laksa  Smile Sep 17, 2013

Normally I try to avoid eating laksa during lunch because I did not want to stain my clothes but since this stall is quite famous, I decided to try it. I ordered the $3 portion and it comes with a generous serving of fishcakes and hum. The primary ingredient seems to be the hum, so if you do not eat hum, I would advise you to buy other food instead. The hum is quite fresh and so is the fishcake. The fishcake is quite bouncy and delicious. The laksa gravy is quite thick with strong coconut fragrance. I added more chili to the laksa to increase the spiciness as I found it to be tastier that way. Overall, I thought that it is quite a good bowl of laksa though I think I would prefer a laksa with more ingredients.

Affordable lunch set Smile Sep 17, 2013
Categories : American | Steaks and Grills

I went to Jack's Place for lunch a few weeks back. As I was caught up in a jam, I left it to my wife to place my order for me. I indicated that I wanted to have steak, so she got the steak for me. I am not very sure what is the sauce that was poured over the steak but it is quite tasty. The sauce is tangy and it went well with the earthly taste of the beef. The beef was cooked medium well and I am quite glad that the chef cooked it well such that there is no blood when I cut into the beef but yet the beef still retains its tenderness. The dish comes with potato wedges and vegetables. I think the broccoli could have been more as there are just two florets of it. The set lunch comes with garlic bread, tea/coffee and dessert of the day so it is quite comprehensive and affordable with my set costing only $13.90++.
