Snack Break at Dean & Deluca Cry May 17, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : American | Café

After walking all around Orchard for what seemed like the whole day, I decided to take a break. Since I was already at Orchard Central, I decided to make a pit stop at Dean & Deluca for a snack break.

Despite having been warned that the food here sucks, I didn't have the energy to walk further. So, I settled for the simplest dish that I could find in their menu-- mac and cheese! Like most of their foods here, these are prepared beforehand and as soon as you order it, they will just heat it and serve to you.

After seeing how they prepare the orders, I didn't expect much from my mac and cheese. The pasta was hard and it was sooo dry. Not good, not good at all. At least I was able to wash it down with the iced tea I ordered.

So worth the trip Smile May 17, 2013

A colleague of mine was the one who introduced this brunch place to me. I was hooked when I was told that they have red velvet pancakes. Even if it was in Bukit Timah, and if my geograpy skills are correct, I live on the other side of Singapore, I paid a visit to this restaurant.

Once I entered, I told the waiter that I didnt make any reservations but it wasn't a problem--there were only a few people dining there on a Saturday morning. I was free to choose whichever table I wanted and I chose one that was tucked in a corner.

I then ordered the raved about red velvet pancakes and to wash it down, the iced lemon tea. The pancakes weren't too thick, which for me, was a plus. Why? Because at least the butter would seep inside the mixture. It was also served with ice cream and fresh strawberry slices. Yum! There were 3 pancakes and I finished them all!

The iced tea was alright. It seemed like the ice melted too much that there weren't a lot of taste left.

The last time I had this dish, I remember that it was too salty. So, when I visited this restaurant again with my sister, I was a bit hesitant to order this. However, most of the past dishes weren't available that night, and so, I told the waiter, "One order of Skipper's Delight with Lobster Bisque Penne Pasta."

As usual, O'Coffee Club gave me a humongous serving of this dish--with 3 (If I remember correctly) big pieces of Dory fish with topped with what seemed like dried lemon bits. Below this was the very rich and red lobster bisque penne pasta.

Let's start with the pasta--it was excellent but it was such a heavy dish for dinner. The penne was cooked al dente and was enhanced by the lobster bisque. As for the fish, it was very tender and didn't have that store-bought taste. This time, the saltiness was done right with a hint of lemon to break the flavour. I originally wanted to have the mud pie for dessert, but after eating the whole serving, I was full.

Good Food, Nice Location Smile May 17, 2013

Torte is a nice break from the busy Orchard life. Tucked inside the SCWO at Waterloo Street, this place is slowly getting the attention it deserves (even without so much publicity) because of the food. Owner and head chef, Jason Ong, is always there to make sure that his restaurant serves good quality dishes.

I went there for dinner last Friday -- and I ordered the Roasted Chicken thigh with potatoes and salad. There weren't a lot of diners there, since it is still a hidden gem, and order was served in less than 15 minutes.

My chicken was generously drizzled in peppered sauce. As such, the taste was absorbed down to the bone. It was also cooked very tender and as soon as my knife touched the meat, it easily fell off the bone. As for the potatoes, they were a good replacement for rice. Salad was also fresh provided a healthy aspect to my meal.

You can't really leave Torte without trying the desserts. After all, Chef is known for his desserts. I ordered the Chocolate Torte and my gosh-- it was one of the best I've tasted. It wasn't too sweet but it was very rich. It was drizzled with chocolate sauce and sitting on top is vanilla ice cream. Two thumbs up!!
