Caramel Frappuccino Smile Mar 08, 2013

Categories : American | Coffee

I always enjoy dining or shopping at Changi Airport partly because of its pleasant & relaxing environment minus the madding crowds at the malls, and partly because the service staff here make a sincere effort to be polite and helpful. So it was at this Starbucks outlet where I was cautioned that I have to finish my drink prior to boarding so do I still want a Venti size, and suggesting that it is better to pick whole milk for frappucino as skinny options when blended with ice cubes make a rather runny drink. The airport outlets do not accept the Starbucks prepaid stored value card (different ownership & Management) and though my purchase amount was paltry for only one drink they gladly let me use my credit card so I wont end up with small change and heavy coins.

Desserts on a budget Smile Jul 23, 2013

Categories : American | Fast Food | Burgers and Sandwiches

After lunch at Lai Lai Taiwanese Casual Dining on Saturday, we had a dessert craving but unfortunately no desserts were available on the menu. We were not inclined to splurge on desserts so MOF Sweets, Swensens and Baskin Robbins were ruled out. Sweet toothed dining companion suggested Burger King and we had no regrets. Burger King outlet at NEX B2 near Serangoon MRT exit is always busy because of its great value F&B plus free Wi-fi. We were blessed to get a corner table vacated by another couple, and ordered a coffee, a Hershey's Sindae Pie and a Coke Float.

Coffee $1.95 from Seattle's Best provided a badly needed shot of caffeine to beat drowsiness after a heavy ramen lunch. The highlight was of course the Hershey's Pie $2.90 which was an irresistable wedge of meringue, Hershey's rich velvety chocolate fudge, whipped cream, choc chips on a crunchy oreo biscuit base. Best shared to spread out the high carbohydrates and high calorie content.

Coke float is currently on promotion and costs an unbelievable 95¢ only. Not to sound like a stingy poker ah pek or ah soh but the coke float sure beats having just a vanilla soft serve ice cream cone at 70¢. Even a small cup of coke will set one back $2.30. The choice is clear especially on a hot afternoon.

So desserts and coffee for two cost only $6, or just $3 per head. Satiated and it was time for our movie.

Guiltless Froyo Smile Mar 12, 2013
Categories : Frozen Yogurt

Frozen yoghurt is my favourite dessert in searing hot afternoons in Singapore. I get all the refreshingly creamy joys of ice cream minus the guilty calories from sugar overload and whole cream/milk. I find Yoguru's lusciously smooth frozen yoghurt the best in terms of texture, without any overpowering acidic smell and just the right touch of tartness to lift my palate. The new flavours like acai berry, pomengranate and matcha are lightly flavoured and just a little sweeter than the Original. I still prefer the Original/plain Yoguru which makes it a perfect base to pile on the optional toppings of your favourite fruits. Usually you'll need to collect 12 stamps on a loyalty card (equivalent to 12 single cups or 6 take home tubs) but to celebrate its opening, the new ARC outlet is giving a free single cup for every $10 spent. I bought a 15oz take home pack for $10.90 and got a free single serve to enjoy on the spot. Bliss!

Superb Beef Noodles Smile Feb 28, 2013

Categories : Hainanese | Hawker Centre | Noodles

The property agent raved about Soon Heng Rojak at the HDB's basement foodcourt and the Xing Zhou Beef Noodles at the Kim Keat Palm hawker centre so we ditched our plan to eat at Astons at the recently reopened new Safra. The Kim Keat Palm hawker centre is big so we asked a passerby for directions to the highly recommended beef noodle stall. He said we could just walk around the perimeter of the hawker centre and look out for a Q that snakes out of it. True enough there was only one such Q & we went to join it. Let's just say that Singaporeans will always be happy to Q for freebies, condos & good food. Although the Q was long, it moved at a reasonably fast pace. The stall is managed by a team of three senior citizens well past their retirement age, so kudos to them for toiling briskly, patiently & steadfastly to serve the Q of hungry customers.

Hainan Xing Zhou indisputably dishes out the best value beef noodles in Singapore. The $3.50 bowl of beef noodles was topped with lots of thinly sliced, good quality lean beef that was blanched to perfect timing to seal in all the juices yet remained a touch rare & tender to the bite.

The gravy was rich, tasty & of perfect consistency, coating every strand of the thick rice noodles without being too starchy. The beef balls were tasty & bouncy too.It is nice to have enough meat to accompany every mouthful of noodles. Full marks also for their hearty, wholesome beef broth which had a robust bovine flavour. The beef residue in the soup is proof that the bovine flavour is derived from cooking lots of beef in the soup which had been kept simmering on the stove over low heat for long hours. This is honest to goodness beef stock with no short cuts. My partner who ordered the beef noodles with the innards also gave his bowl two thumbs up as the beef tendon, stomach & other parts had been painstakingly cleaned thoroughly to rid them of any offensive smells and subsequently cooked just right. While this stall is hardly as famous as the Hock Lam Beef Noodles at Raffles Place which I find rather overrated, it has built up a loyal clientele who make their way back regularly whenever they have a craving for homestyle beef noodles. I am one of Xing Zhou's newest fans.

Milky Alishan Tea Smile Dec 27, 2012

Categories : Taiwanese | Bubble Tea/ Tea

I took some time to locate this new Gong Cha outlet in B1 of Changi City Point along a fairly quiet corridor. It is actually diagonally next to the entrance of Cold Storage Supermarket. There were three staff on duty on Thursday afternoon, two of whom were in charge of fixing the drinks while one took orders and handled payment. I was delighted to be served my drink immediately after payment. My order of Gong Cha's signature Alishan Milk Tea lived up to its reputation. Here the tea is concentrated and topped by a generous layer of rich and thick milk foam.It was bliss in every sip for me. This outlet is currently having a promotion for Matcha Milk Tea with Azuki Beans - usual price $3.90 for 16oz cup but now it is just $3. My friend ordered this and was happy with the generous amount of red beans despite the promotion. There is another bubble tea shop further down the same corridor as Gong Cha which prices 16oz drinks at flat rate of $2 but this Gong Cha outlet has held on to its regular customers who walked past the new shop to buy from Gong Cha. Besides the promo item other popular drinks here include the passionfruit green tea, korean citron a juice with jelly, caramel milk tea and lemon juice with pearl and jelly.
