Salted egg chicken rice set - $6.80

There was a recommended new dish for today - the salted egg chicken rice set. The picture shown at the counter looked good, so I decided to try it. I was really disappointed when I saw my dish. There were only pathetically thin strips of chicken (as opposed to what I saw as bigger chicken chunks in their promo photo) which had more batter than meat. There was also not enough salted egg sauce to coat the chicken pieces. The amount of chicken given was so little, my dining companions actually pitied me and wanted to offer me some of their food... shocked The accompanying Japanese side salad and achar thankfully provided some solace. Otherwise, I would have been utterly devastated.

Fried sotong mee - $3

Ordered the hokkien mee (or sotong mee as it's called at this stall) and char kway teow to try.

The sotong mee looked quite terrible when it arrived. The egg in the sauce was cooked till it was all over the place in "little bits". Hard to explain, but you could take a closer look at the photo above. Besides egg, I could not taste any seafood sweetness in the sauce. Chilli was a bit too sweet and slightly sourish too. Definitely below normal expectations for a plate of hokkien mee.

The char kway teow did not fare any better. The noodles arrived limp and rather watery without enough black sauce taste to it.

Seems the chef here does not cook very well...I'll advise people not to try this stall at all.

My friend was going to give me a treat today. Since we were at AMK Hub, I suggested to try this place as the food display outside the restaurant looked quite good. Also, my friend has wanted to try this place as well since she says it's usually crowded during peak hours with a lot of people queuing up. We were here for late lunch, so we got a seat easily.

Do not be fooled by the plastic replicas of the food dishes shown on display. What we had were nothing like those. Well, of course there is always a disclaimer somewhere that what is shown might not be representative of your actual food....which is so true. Another thing to add... I thought the place sells udon but from the menu, it seems to be mostly a hodge-podge of other japanese and asian meals. There were hardly any udon dishes available, sadly.

Out of everything we had, the gyoza was the best item. It was crispy and the filling quite tasty. Unfortunately, there is absolutely no dip to go with it. We asked the waitress whether there's any Mayo or vinegar for dipping the gyozas in and she just said "No" unapologetically. In fact, she seemed a bit puzzled by our question. Oh well, most other places selling gyozas will have dipping sauces! (vinegar usually)

Arghhh this is a very horrible dish. With the name of the dish (butter clams), we did not expect this watery rendition. In fact, there's no butter taste! The clams were rubbery and the soup (if you can still call it that) was bitter. Maybe they put too much wine or something in it?? Anyway, it was hardly palatable. My poor friend had a really hard time trying to finish it.

The Penang assam noodles tasted ordinary. It was a bit too much on the sweet side. By the end of the meal, you actually get this feeling that the soup base might have been made from canned sardines sauces...

The chili soft shell crab was not too bad. The crab was quite crispy and tasty. The sauce could be spicier though. It had a bit more ketchup than I would have liked. Although generally it still went well with the crab. The noodles were a bit soggy though - you can tell from a bit of water left at the bottom of the dish that the chef did not remove the water from the noodles properly. Most likely done by someone who doesn't bother how the noodles are cooked.

Speaking about the chef, I saw her cooking noodles and yakking away on the phone at the same time. Service from the wait staff was poor too. The waiter practically shoved the dishes beneath us.

We left the restaurant feeling totally unsatisfied. Highly recommended NOT to try this place.

I've wanted to try this new ramen place for some time. Finally got some friends to accompany me today to try out their weekday set lunch. You top up $2 on top of the ala carte ramen price and you'll get a side dish and a drink.

Guide-dog friendly smile

As a ramen fan, I've got high standards for my ramen. For their ramen sets, it's disappointing that the egg that comes with their ramen is a half-boiled egg and not the runny egg-yolk type of ramen egg. The seaweed and bamboo shoots tasted alright. However, their very thinly sliced pork cha shu hardly had any flavor to it and seem to be just boiled. Noodles were cooked a bit too soft for my liking too.

Their signature ramen had added spices to their broth, like a slightly peppery tonkotsu broth. Did not really like the taste. Also, soup base was a bit too one-dimensional salty and very oily. I prefer one that is rich, but does not leave an oily after-taste on your lips.

Arashi Genkotsu Ramen - $14.90++ for set

As for the sio ramen, the soup base is less salty than their signature ramen. But still, it's too oily.

We choose the gyoza for the side dish. The skins were thin and pan-fried till crispy. But the amount of meat could be more. When I bit into the gyoza, it kinda collapsed in probably due to insufficient filling. The meat within was tasty though.

Gyoza (3 pcs)

Guess this is a one-time visit for me, as it falls below my expected standards.

I specially requested no prawns/sotong for our plate of hokkien noodles but requested for more noodles instead. Well, hubby doesn't like to eat seafood although weirdly enough he likes the taste of hokkien noodles. Anyway, the serving that came was large but unfortunately, the noodles tasted strongly of pork and it even smelt a little off - or is it just the "porky" taste. Which means they did not use prawn broth to simmer the noodles - which is totally not what is expected for a decent plate of hokkien noodles. Enough said. Will not order this dish from here again.
