Nice ice cream Smile Nov 10, 2013
Categories : Ice Cream and Gelato

I ordered a scoop of avocado ice cream and dined within the simple confines of salted caramel here. I noticed that metal spoons were available too, besides the plastic ones, so I took that instead - let's save the environment yah?

The avocado ice cream was good, as it's thick and creamy with an intense avocado taste to it. It's also not too sweet. Really nice, if you are a fan of avocado. I had a taste of my friend's chocolate stout, which was pretty good too. You can taste the alcohol in it mixed together with the chocolate.

A nice place to have a well-deserved dessert after a hot day.

Value-for-money set lunches! Smile Nov 10, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : European | Japanese | Singaporean Chinese

My primary aim to come to the wine company here for lunch on a public holiday was to try their chocolate lava cake, which is the best I've tried so far. I was pleasantly surprised to find that their set lunch offers were also valid on a PH. smile

Evans Lodge is located in a quaint spot, among nature. One of the trees in the carpark was so huge, its roots were causing parts of the road to buckle a bit. A nice, quiet spot in the afternoon. I think the place gets busier at night when people come here for the wine.

Besides the set lunch ($12) offer, you get a 30% discount too for any other mains or desserts you order off the ala carte menu. It worked out just nice for us then! With the membership card, you get a 10% off the final bill too.

- Tomato soup, my choice of starter for the set lunch

Fresh tomatoes were probably used for the soup which came with the set lunch. It was quite thick and not bad if you like tomatoes. However, my hubby found it too sour for his liking.

- Chicken macaroni, the main dish for the set lunch

Going by the normal-sounding chicken macaroni, I did not pin any high hopes on the item. Boy, I was so surprised! This turned out to be the best dish among our mains! The macaroni was cooked till al dente and the sauce used was very delicious. It was not just one-dimensional nice but had a nice complex taste to it. The tender chicken pieces (thigh meat, not tough chicken breast meat which I thought might be given) and soft pumpkin cubes went well with the macaroni. The addition of black pepper and some sliced chilli uplifted the dish and provided a nice contrast. Excellent! Unfortunately, this dish is not on the main menu though, as this is offered within the set lunch menu which changes from time to time.

- Bacon asparagus capellini ($12.80)

The capellini could have been a bit more al dente. There was plenty of bacon given and the mix of cherry tomatoes, garlic and asparagus was good. Perhaps due to the bacon, the dish was a tad greasy towards the end. Still, it's a tasty dish.

- Ham and Pineapple Pizza ($16)

The pizza crust was thin and the tomato base was quite good. However, I feel that more cheese and ham could have been given. Also, it's kinda pricey for a small pizza.

- Chocolate lava cake ($12.80)

As usual, the chocolate lava cake did not disappoint. There was plenty of good quality oozing chocolate within, accompanied by a good scoop of vanilla ice cream. Very nice!

A lovely place with good food to match smile

Homely chicken curry  Smile Nov 10, 2013
Categories : Singaporean Chinese

- Curry noodles, $4.80

My friends recommended the chicken curry as they simply loved it at the original outlet. Thus, they wanted to try this outlet at Nex. The curry indeed has a very home-cooked feel, much like what your elderly relative would have lovingly made. The curry was thick and quite tasty. Potatoes were cooked till soft and had absorbed the curry flavours well. I thought the spice level was ok too. Well, if you have a craving for chicken curry, you can pop by this place.

By the way, the lychee tea ($2.80) was a good accompaniment for the curry. It seemed that actual brewed tea was used in the drink. It was not too sweet too and big, fresh lychees were given too.

Ordinary soya sauce chicken OK Nov 09, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Chinese | Coffeeshop | Rice

- Soya sauce chicken rice, $2.50

The signage here is eye-catching and I was attracted to its claim of being the "soya sauce chicken king". So...of course I have to try it personally to ascertain the claim, ya?

I must say that for $2.50, a lot of rice and chicken was given. I requested for the rear part of the chicken and was not charged extra, which is good. The rice was a bit brownish in colour but then was surprisingly rather tasteless. The chilli sauce was also unremarkable and was diluted. The skin for the soya sauce chicken was well-braised but the chicken itself was not well-marinated.

Generally, just an ordinary plate of soya sauce chicken rice which I will probably not order again.

Lor Mee here is a better choice OK Nov 09, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Singaporean | Chinese | Coffeeshop | Noodles

Me and my hubby were looking for a quick bite around the area and decided to try this stall. I ordered the lor mee while he ordered the mini wok noodles.

- Lor Mee, $2.50

The lor mee was pretty decent, for the sauce was quite tasty (just a tad salty though) and the ingredients given were quite plentiful given that it was only $2.50.

My hubby's mini wok noodles fared rather badly. The noodles were cooked till too soggy and the soup was simply too salty!

- Mini wok noodles, $3.50

Thus, give the mini wok noodles here a miss and try the lor mee instead.
