Great breakfast here!  Smile Jan 21, 2013

Categories : Burgers and Sandwiches

This was my third food-tasting session invited by openrice!
This time, we went over to The Rotisserie at the Rochester Mall, for brunch, or more of breakfast.

The place serves breakfast in a quick pace and they specialize in chickens. I had classic panini which has bountiful amount of chicken chunks in it, and I was totally bought over.

Breakfast made right in front of your scrutinization!

At first I thought there were enough seats for customers, but little did I know The Rotisserie was so popular such that the indoors seatings were filled up by 10am, and late comers resort to sit outdoors. As it was raining before that, the weather was cooling enough. Not too bad!

BLT
$7
Bacon, Lettuce, Tomato & Mayonnaise

Bacon was obviously the star of the dish. Since it's only bacon, they were pretty generous with it and you can see several bacon strips sandwiched between the toasted white bread. Comes with garden salad, but without salad dressing, so it was a little dull.

Classic Panini
$9
Roasted Chicken, Ham, Bacon, Tomato, Lettuce, Cheddar Cheese & Mayonnaise

Compared to the smoked salmon bagel, I love this panini much much more ❤!
Look at the description and you'll know there are really many ingredients under this humble looking panini bread.
This was generally a lip-smacking sandwich because the chicken slices was covered in adequate amount of mayonnaise and cheddar cheese!! Thumbs up to the cheese especially! The mayonnaise makes the chicken not dry at all, as well as the ham and bacon. I really love every bite I had. I strongly recommend this.

Smoked Salmon Bagel with Cream Cheese
$8

Can I tell you how good is this salmon bagel? Along with the cream cheese and its very smooth plain bun, this dish was a very appetizing and delicious bun. Commented by estelle, she finds the smoked salmon not as cold as expected. But I thought it was fine. That taste of the smoked salmon was balanced with the salty taste from the salmon, and sour taste from the cream cheese. Good one!^^

I order the English breakfast tea $4, and surprisingly, though I didn't add sugar, it taste not as bad!
In fact I like the genuine taste, so I skipped the sugar and cream.

Overall, I thought I had another enjoyable weekend morning breakfast at The Rotisserie, and I would love to bring my friends or my boyfriend over to chill out here. Probably not rochester since I don't live near boonlay. Perhaps the other outlets! But the food are really worth another visit. And did I mention the price is really affordable?

When you step into Tonkotsu King, you might be as surprised as me. shocked

That's because the whole eatery is pretty small-sized, and I guess it's the smallest eatery I've even been to, yet having such a long queue outside the shop. Don't judge the size of the eatery because the quality of the ramen will surprise you even more.

With the freedom of choice to add Japanese seaweed at a dollar extra, or flavoured egg at two dollars extra, you can easily customized your own ramen. Despite this, they only have three types of ramen available, which is why they can serve you at a very speedy pace!

Their three types of ramen are Tonkotsu Ramen, Red Spicy Tonkotsu Ramen and Black Spicy Tonkotsu Ramen. tongue

The red spicy ramen wasn't actually veryy spicy. It's manageable!
But if you are not into spiciness, opt for the Tonkotsu Ramen will do, but they do taste a little normal. So i suggest just going for something more special since you are here, isn't it? smile

On your table, you will find some sesame seasonings, spicy marinated bean sprouts and a bowl of hard boiled eggs. The hard boiled eggs and bean sprouts are free flow, yes you are not reading it wrongly, they are free flow. The sesame was provided with grinding equipment. I suppose they bring out stronger aroma after grinding and including into the broth. It tasted really good when you mix the sesame into your broth, and it really makes a difference to the broth. Considering this coming from a person who isn't a fan of sesame (that's me), trust me!

The eatery is really small and there are less than 10 tables inside. So please don't ever do in a group! Four is the maximum quantity you should have if you want to sit together at a same table. To think of it, the place is too small to even be suitable for you to hold a gathering dinner there. sad

There was a very long queue outside at about 6pm on a weekend, but if you don't mind queueing for about 15-20 mins for a great deal of ramen, go for it. It's worth your wait. You'll be given an order form to write down your order while you are queueing. When you step into the eatery, you pass the order form to the waiter and your ramen will be at your table within 5 mins. That is why although the queue is long, it's fast as well.

I love the ramen, it is by far the best that I've tried. Compared to places like Ajisen, this is so much more authentic and delicious. The broth was especially thick and tasty. I would love to go back again! I don't think they take reservations though, so go early and start queueing for the plausible best ramen you can have, at a very affordable price! chopsticklollollollol

Great place for brunch  Smile Aug 14, 2013

Categories : Multi-Cuisine | Café | Pasta | Burgers and Sandwiches | Brunch

It was a saturday afternoon and the place was reasonably packed. I didn't really called for reservation because they simply do not take reservation. But they do help you reserve the seats if you call like half an hour earlier, which was what I did.

Caramel Cappuccino $6.50

I do not usually order a drink to pair it with my mains. But I do have a craving that noon and I wanted to try one of their recommendation.

I must say, the caramel cappuccino was pretty good. The sweetness hit the spot so well - neither too sweet nor bland. The only downside about it was the simple latte art. But it's okay, a big heart shape is cool! I love it everytime I take a sip of the Cappuccino. The sweet caramel taste coffee make its way through the thick layer of milk foam.

Hot Chocolate with Dark Cocoa S$7
My friend ordered the hot chocolate and it was mediocre. Nothing special about it.
I do like the presentation of the drink though. Love how the chocolate shavings settle in the pool of milk foam.

Poached eggs on Thick Toast with Smoked Salmon S$15
This is highly recommended.

I think the price itself is quite reasonable, especially when it comes with a generous serving of thick (really thick and savory) smoked salmon coated underneath a blanket of hollandaise sauce. I find myself very addicted to the hollandaise sauce. This is really one of the best smoked salmon with poached eggs and it's the only one I would return for, because I really really detest egg yolk. If not for the hollandaise sauce, I'll just shove the egg yolks aside.

Chicken and Mushroom Pie S$14
The pie on the other hand was definitely not as satisfying as the smoked salmon toast.
I guess pies aren't really Group Therapy's specialities so do not expect much. The crust may be crumbly but not fantastic.

It was such a wonderful and lazy afternoon~~
I enjoyed my smoked salmon so much.
This is really a good place for brunch!

One of the best hokkien mee  Smile Jul 03, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Hawker Centre

I went there right after my work so I reached at about 7 pm, after a bus ride of 4 stops. So for this peak period, I waited for about 20 minutes for the food. The hawker chef cooks the noodles in batches because there are simply so much orders at one time. Personally, I find the place a little inaccessible to the public that do not stay in Ang Mo Kio. But after trying the hokkien mee, I have to say it is indeed worth it to drop by once in a while and savour one of the best hokkien mee in Singapore.

Next you'll find the version of Hokkien Mee to be wetter with lots of moisture locked in the noodles through the process of simmering the noodles. The hawker prepares a wholesome pool of broth using prawns as the main ingredient, integrates them into the noodles in his huge wok, and after which allows it some time to simmer under a well-controlled fire source.

I presonally enjoy the the wetter version of the hokkien mee because it doesn't taste too dry. The soup sauce makes every mouthful of noodles really silky smooth and there was no need for effort to chew before the noodles glide down your throat.

Broth aside, the Hokkien Mee comes with fresh ingredients like thin pork slice (I had only a piece in my plate) and a few pieces of fresh prawns and sotong slices. The ingredients were all fresh enough for a good hawker standard.

One of the best zichar ever  Smile Jan 29, 2013

Categories : Coffeeshop | Zi Char

I've always heard many friends talking about Twochefs, how good and cheap the food here is, making me all excited to visit this place and have a feast.
Even at 8pm when we arrived, the place was fully occupied!
Luckily we made a reservation, if not I guess we had to wait very long for an empty table.

Iced Milk Tea
Drunken cockles $6

Drunken cockles $6

This is not a plate of plain fried cockles; the cockles are stir-fried with vinegar (I suppose), making it taste very appetizing. It doesn't feel raw at all, the cockles were prepared well. I've always been a fan of cockles and I must say I've tried quite a few different types of preparing cockles, but this is the best type of cockles I've tried!!! Cold and tasty.
Vegetables with egg, salted egg and century egg $10

Vegetables with egg, salted egg and century egg $10

A plate of vegetables submerged in the soup of 3 types of eggs, you might find it too common. But I wouldn't really agree so. Many of us thought this dish was very addictive. The normal egg makes the majority of the sauce, while the century egg adds texture to the soup. The vegetables in general was soft and smooth, which I guess it's why it's well-liked by all of us.
Buttered Ribs (Pork ribs in milk powder) $12

Buttered Ribs (Pork ribs in milk powder) $12

With such a big quantity at only $12 (medium sized), I don't think this dish is pricey. In fact, having your pork ribs coated in milk powder really gives an amazing mouthfeel. Some of the powder melts in your mouth as you chew on the meat. The ribs are boneless as well!
This is one of their signature dish and it's definitely a must-have!
Fried buttered prawns (with pork floss) $20

Fried buttered prawns (with pork floss) $20

Prawn balls are generally expensive at any zichar stall. At first I was still hesitant about Estelle ordering prawn balls because usually we don't get satisfied ordering prawn balls as they are very little and expensive. But here, Twochefs really prove me wrong. Their prawns are really huge and it was even complimented with pork floss and mayonnaise, all at the price of $20 only! I once had prawn balls elsewhere at a random hawker centre at $30, and boy, the quantity was much lesser and less tasty than this.
In my opinion, this is another must-have too!
Golden Mushroom Beancurd $10

Golden Mushroom Beancurd $10

Fried beancurd was submerged in the sweet and sour gravy, coupled with plenty golden mushroom. This was a generally easy-to-swallow dish because of the smooth and gluey gravy, appetizing as well due to its sour element in it.

Overall, the food was in generally great in portion and reasonable priced. The total cost was about $64 only (for 6 of us)!!! That's like roughly $10 per person, for so many varieties! Sometimes, for such standards, we usually pay roughly $15-$17. So I must say this is a great place for zi char. Cheap and super good food.

I think it's a very good place for dinner with family. The place is 15 minutes walk away from commonwealth mrt station, so it's a little far and inaccessible. It will be better if you have a car though. Then again, for the good food, who minds travelling? ;)
