Premium sushi here Smile Jan 19, 2014

Left: Aburi Salmon Roll $19.80
Right: Rainbow Roll $19.80

Kaz Jap Sushi has always been my favourite. Although they are a bit pricey, but the quality of their food is really commendable. Their sashimi rolls are really premium topped with fresh ingredients.

They do takeaways too! smile

Decent standard Smile Jan 12, 2014

Categories : Italian | Middle Eastern/Mediterranean | Pasta

This is like my third time heading back and I kind of ordered the similar things.

Italian Chocolate
$8.80
The Italian Chocolate is really thick! It was very thoughtfully paired with some cookie strips to allow us to dip the thick chocolate with it.
This is a nice dessert, but take note you'll get very full if you finish it before your meal comes.

Truffle fries
$6.90
Truffle fries that come with truffle cream sauce. The truffle taste is there and most of us love this. Most truffle fries from other places do not differ much from normal fries, so I would really recommend this if you would like to try real truffle fries with the taste being there. The fries are thick fries instead of those 'macdonald's' fries.

Mushroom soup
The mushroom bits are grind into very tiny pieces so the soup generally take creamy and grainy. This version of mushroom soup relates to those thick authentic ones. Although there aren't any visible chunks of mushroom, the tiny bits of mushroom was good enough to bring out the mushroom soup taste lollol

Saffron and Caviar Risotto
$19.90
Saffron infused and certainly hand-made risotto, inclusive of char-grilled juicy prawns and scallops. The risotto is thick and clumpy, which wasn't really nice. But I have to say the huge chunk of prawns and scallops were really awesome! Everything was perfected with the hill of caviar, giving the risotto a salty touch to the tastebuds.

Platypus are very popular and well-received for its handmade pastas. I think same goes to the risotto as well.
The restaurant are beautifully adorned with lightbulbs on the ceilings and cushioned chair, giving diners a relaxing and enjoyable night. However, it may get really crowded during peak periods, like when i went on a friday evening!

Delicate Chinese Cuisine  Smile Jun 24, 2013

How did you celebrate Mother's day and the subsequent Father's day this year? My family usually picks a restaurant for a simple dinner and that more or less wraps up our celebration for such special occasions. That said, I was more than excited to try out the Chinese cuisine here at 金山樓 (Jin Shan @ Marina Bay Sands).

Upon reaching, you'll be ushered through the lush inviting corridors into those 6-seaters VIP 'pot', or if you have more people with you, you can opt for their VIP rooms further into the restaurant.

金山特色三拼
Jin Shan Special Combination
(烧肉,烧鸭,油鸡)

My personal favourite among the three different meat was the roasted duck. Most of the duck meat has been deboned, well if not, the tender meat still falls off the bone at a mere prod of your fork. Apart from the tender juicy meat, the skin has been roasted to an extremely crispy thin layer with a slightly sweet taste to finish it.

An absolutely no-frills meat among the three thanks to the boneless roasted pork served in cube size, I must say I am caught in a dilemma to decide if the roasted duck or this was my favourite. The pork pieces has a roasted top layer covering the chewy pork meat, with very minimal fats as seen in the photo. What surprises me was that it tasted really well by dabbing it with the wasabi, thoughtfully presented at the side in small tiny portions.

金盅海鮮湯
Seafood Soup Served in Mini Pumpkin

The Seafood Soup served in Mini Pumpkin was a bowl packed lusciously with scallops and prawn bits in the sweetest seafood broth. Finish off the soup with some pumpkin flesh as you conveniently scrape off the flesh along the edge of the pumpkin.

蛋白花雕蒸鳕鱼
Steamed Cod Fillet with Chinese Wine and Egg White

The steamed cod fish was then served in individual portions for all of us. A piece of cod fish was very delicately served on top of a pool of Egg White in Chinese wine sauce. Enjoy the best out of this dish by consuming the smooth fish and spongy egg white together with the chinese wine.

福建炒面线
Fujian Wheat Vermicelli with Shredded Meat

Another family's favourite could not escape the Fujian Wheat Vermicelli. Although the name itself did not mention, this dish actually comes with prawns and fried eggs apart from the bountiful shredded meat. The vermicelli itself was neither oily nor dry, proving itself a fine staple dish for family dinne

咸蛋明虾球
Golden Sands Fresh Prawn with Salted Egg

The Golden Sands Fresh Prawn with Salted egg not only looked incredibly tempting, it also gave out a strong salted egg aroma when served. The salted egg sauce was unfortunately a little too grainy, which ended up making me cough a little as the spices caught in between my throat. Nonetheless, the sauce was great for its strong salted egg taste. However, the large prawn, although really juicy and fresh, seems to be a little bland on the inside.

杨枝甘露
Chilled Mango Sago with Pomelo

To end off the 7-course meal, we enjoyed the Chilled Mango Sago filled with aloe vera bits, mango chunks and pomelo. The sweetness was just right.

Jin Shan is a rather high class chinese restaurant not just because it's located in MBS. However, the quality of the food has pride itself and is worth every of your penny.

Unique pizzas here!  Smile Feb 24, 2013

There is a stark difference between this outlet and the one newly opened at Plaza Singapura. Not sure if it's because of the timing i visited both outlets. I came here on a weekday, in the afternoon for lunch. But obviously, there's very little people here, compared to the longggg queue at PS.

There's this promotion which comes with 3 sides at $15 only. I think it's a wiser choice because two sides will already cost about $12?

To be honest, this is my first time trying truffle fries and I like it a lot ^.^ It was served piping hot so it's really nice to eat it right when it was served, but make sure you drink lots of water because it can be really heaty.

Truffled mushroom @ $24
We all know truffled mushroom are rare and highly esteemed, because of the way they are extracted. Google to find out more!

Other than that, Estelle was saying it's pretty good because of the strong truffled mushroom flavor. I wouldn't really agree completely because the taste of it was a little too strong for me. Order at your own preference!

Squid Ink Paella $22
This dish comes with some clams and squid, with plenty of capsicums. Overall, it's fragrant and tasty for its slightly charred paella. However, the rice can be quite little for they uses shallow (but wide) pans.

The depth of the rice on the pan is at most 1 inch only. So this is really little for $22. Good for girls on diet maybe?

As for the services, the waitresses are really nice and they come to you almost immediately. Perhaps because there's little customers when I was there!

Do you know Astons at Cathay has undergone a huge renovation?

Check out the review on my blog:
http://chiamhuiy.blogspot.com/2013/01/catching-up-with-friends-at-astons.html

When I first reached, I was pretty shocked myself too! I knew it was renovating but I didn't expect such a huge change.
Newly revamped astons!

Newly revamped astons!

Basically, what they did was to really extend the indoors seatings more than by around 50%? I swear! I think they must have bought or rented another store next to them and linked both up. Astons is much much extended and spacious now! Though there is still queue, but it is no longer as long as the usual queue you would see in a weekend. A queue in the past can make you wait as long as 15-20 minutes, but now, worry no more! smile

Their menu.
Do you know Astons do not charge GST and service charge? So whatever price on the menu is NETT PRICE.
Menu~

Menu~

And it's mostly below $10!!
I think it's pretty worth it to dine at astons because the portion they provide are really sufficient to stuff yourself freaking full. If you have a big appetite, you can go for the Double Up Chicken at $11.90, which gives you two pieces of chicken! Still cheap please.

Three of us ordered snapple, but here's the two different flavours we had:
Snapple!

Snapple!

Mango Madness and Pink Lemonade
$2.80 each

I think this is a little retarded here... but Mango Madness snapple basically has a very strong mango taste, while my Pink Lemonade's sour taste isn't exactly the intolerable sour, and it has this after taste which makes my mouth pretty dry. BUT! I still like it. I think I would order Kiwi Strawberry next time too, it's nice as well.

My friend ordered the IBC Root beer!
IBC Rootbeer!

IBC Rootbeer!

You know there IS a difference between the normal rootbeer and IBC rootbeer. If you are unaware of it, try it. To me, it does taste different! More authentic and fizzy I guess? But then again, what's considered authentic? Haha. Up to your tastebud to decide!
Lemon Lime chicken

Lemon Lime chicken

Lemon Lime Chicken
with Fries and Mash Potato
$7.90 (nett)

I ordered the Lemon Lime Chicken, with the two side dishes. If stated on the menu, chicken dishes usually has two complimentary side dishes for you to pair it with your main chicken, without additional charge of course! I usually ordered fries because they taste pretty good.

Their mash potato is soft and tender as well, but one bad thing is they usually give very little mushroom sauce, as you can see from the photo. So usually I will ask for additional mushroom sauce and they are more than willing to give it to you. Talk about service!
Chicken and Sausage combo

Chicken and Sausage combo

Chicken (Teriyaki) and Sausage Combo
With Marconi cheese and corn on the cob!
$12.90 (nett)

If you order this, you have a choice to choose any type of chicken from the menu for your combo. My friend ordered the Teriyaki chicken. Their sausage looks a little though, so it might not be very worth it.
But since my friend doesn't mind having these, he got it! For me, if I have a big appetite, I will go for the Double up Chicken.

Overall, Astons at the Cathay has greatly changed for a better good! They are now so spacious, clean and newly revamped! I really like their change and would definitely wish to come back again. They have now provided me a better reason to come back again!

Since they are now bigger, you can easily come with a group of friends to have a very very affordable meal together and catch up with each other, just like what I did!

Furthermore, the price of their food is extremely affordable and below average restaurant prices! What's the best is that they do not charge service charge and GST at all. With their low prices on the menu, they don't even charge all these. I only paid a total $11 for my dinner, which I though was really worthy.

We came at 7pm, and left at 9pm. Two hours spent here with all the catching up and chit-chatting, Astons is great for gatherings and chill out session with your friends as well. Sorry for repeating but since Astons is now bigger and better, you now have another choice for outings or lunch with friend!
^_^

Hope you liked my review!
