Heavy Seasonings for Soups Cry Jun 19, 2013

Categories : Japanese | Buffet | Sukiyaki/Shabu Shabu

Visit HERE: http://dairycream.blogspot.sg/2013/06/shabu-sai-japanese-shabu-buffet.html for full post and pics
Riding on the wave of steamboat in Singapore, Shabu Sai has opened a second outlet at Orchard Central. Quite unlike the shabu shabu in Japan, the version here reminded me of the Sichuan Yuan-yang Pot, in which diners can choose 2 different types of soup. Price per pax for weekday dinner was $26++

From the six regular soup base including curry dashi, tomato, seaweed, tonkotsu, we picked the Spicy and also the Special flavour for May/June-Yuzu Salt which claimed to contain collagen.

While waiting for the soup to boil, one can start selecting from the buffet counter of fresh vegetables, including Japanese shoots and white radish. Other unique items include the orange fish balls and the vegetable balls.
The meat are served in bamboos, not purely for presentation, but because it has anti-bacterial properties to keep the meat fresh. One was the normal fish paste, while the other was the minced beef with lotus.

One thing that differs from the first outlet at Causeway Point is the addition of assorted sushi. The rice lacked the acidity of vinegar and was rather dry. I prefer the mini donburi with bits of unagi and egg but the sauce was too little.
The largest disappointment of the day, unfortunately, was the Soup base. Both the Spicy and Yuzu salt we had chosen were extremely salty, and tasted no different from each other. The Spicy version lacked the spice while the latter had no yuzu fragrant or flavour.

The tasting samplers of other soup bases had the same problem: too much MSG, except for the seaweed soup which was very bland. The seasonings were excessive to the extent that the salty juices infiltrated all the vegetables and meat which was "shabu-shabu". As a result of the soups, the wide variety of sauces, from the standard Japanese ponzu dressing to korean chilli bean paste became wasted or rather redundant.

Unless you bring your own water, free flow of drinks and ice cream are available when you topped up $1.99. The food kept me very thirsty until the next morning. To put it short, the soup bases still has plenty of room for adjustment. Otherwise it would be good if there are kettles of hot water on the buffet table for standby to prevent a salt attack.

Lackluster rice roll  Cry Jun 06, 2013

For full post, visit: http://www.dairycream.blogspot.sg/2013/05/teo-chew-street-bak-chor-mee.html
Besides having the teochew street bak chor mee, father went to order this chee cheong fun which was not authentic as it claimed to be. The factory-made skin turned out to be dry and the average homemade sauce did not help much. I would suggest you save your stomach for other food.

Their main outlet at Serene centre has received significantly better reviews than this place and I can finally understand why. Be prepared to receive worse-than-expected service here as the glum-faced servers seemed unhappy to have customers entering their territory. Do not expect them to guide you to your seats or take your orders.

Dishes which you can only find here includes this Croissant with Escargots (13.50) which came in a satisfying portion despite being an entree. The fluffy warm bread stuffed with big fat chewy escargots was doused in that delicious mushroom garlic gravy! The idea of croissant with escargots is really a wonderful change to the usual garlic and butter type. I am really curious about the escargots here because they are one of the largest I have tried so far.

The Seared tuna steak with onion marmalade (14.50) was Iight dish which my old folks like. But I prefer those with more flavor like the fish from Saveur. The combination of bittersweet onion with fresh slightly raw tuna is quite odd but the wine infused rice was really fluffy and fragrant with accents of cheese.

The dessert selection was limited to the familiar Creme brûlée, opera and flourless chocolate cake all ranging between$4-$5. 50 cents cheaper with a main course ordered. Since I know this is my last time, I choose one that is the least common out of the rest. Surprisingly, the chocolate orange mousse cake was rich and outstanding. And at $3.50, it was the best steal of the day.

In short, the food especially the croissants escargots is worth trying if you ignore the bad service. If you visit the Serene Centre branch or come here for takeaway, you may be able to maximize the enjoyment of your food more!

So near yet so far Cry Jan 14, 2013

For full reviews : http://www.dairycream.blogspot.sg/2012/11/the-high-society-so-near-yet-so-far.html

Given the name "high society" and the luxurious settings and decor, we would expect some above average food to be served. But it seems that perhaps our expectations might be too high.

Served on a bed of mash potato, the portion of this lamb shank is huge but the taste was lacking. If you were to compare this to the original photo in here, the mixed greens were clearly missing. It seems like the lamb and the sauce are two separate entities as there is only the gamey taste of the lamb. The sauce had no clear red wine taste too. This sets off a sign that the rest of the food might fall into bad shape.

And unexpectedly, the Norwegion Haddock in tempura batter and fries with air flown garden leaves (the main course which I ordered) is neither visually appealing or taste as fantastic as it sounds.

The fries were totally unsalted and the tempura batter was not crispy and done in the Japanese style. The fillet itself had no taste or any fragrance of being fried. The tartar sauce was average and even though it did help me to finish with the fillet. I think there is no need to highlight anything about the salad that was "air flown".

German Knuckles
The skin is crispy but the meat seems relatively drier than those served at other local German Restaurants. Some commented that the sauerkraut was not sour enough. Once again, like the lamb shank and the fish, this pork has no distinct flavour on it's own.

Would be better if they can finetune their food by improving the quality to attract customers back . It needs to meet the expectations that it has set for itself.

Overhyped Korean Food Cry Jan 13, 2013
Categories : Korean | Bars/Lounges | Restaurant | BBQ

For full details: http://dairycream.blogspot.sg/2012/11/korean-bossbarbq-korean-food-gangnam.html
bland and slightly bitter

bland and slightly bitter

Kimchi Stew
This is much milder than I had expected. It lacks the spicy punch and had a slight bitter taste. The taste does not whet up one's appetite.
BossBarBq is a Korean BBQ joint which opened recently at Clarke Quay. Apparently this is quite popular especially among young Korean fans and it has drawn a significant crowd compare to other restaurants in the same area.

Signature Fried Chicken Wings (non spicy)
This is the smaller 9-piece version. This was good but not exceptional. The coating is crunchy, not too greasy while the meat remains moist. There were 3 different kinds of sauce: salt & pepper, sweeter version of mayonnaise, chilli sauce.
too tough and the fries are soggy

too tough and the fries are soggy

BBQ Pork Ribs
Although this is supposed to be "spicy", there is really not much spice in it and the glaze is just a sweet thin layer. Moreover, the pork is too rough and hard to tear off from the bone. Not to mention that the fries were bland and slightly soggy. It looks totally different from the blazing red hot ribs on the menu.
must try!!!

must try!!!

Seafood pancake
Highly recommend this even if you don't like Korean pancakes. This one is really the best Korean pancakes I've had because it has more ingredients than the flour batter.

Overall the food here is quite average except for the seafood pancake (it is so big that it is good for sharing) which is extremely good and crispy. Unfortunately, many of the items were unavailable ( fish and spicy cheese chicken). I would not find the chicken wings here particularly fantastic too. Meanwhile, the service was also not prompt and attentive. Perhaps this "famous korean barbeque brand" might have been overrated.
