Fusion Confusion Cry Dec 20, 2012

Categories : French | Fusion | Bars/Lounges | Restaurant | Fine Dining

There has been mixed reviews about this restaurant at one of the best locations in town. Since reviews are always subjective, it might be worth trying once in a lifetime as we all knew that that was a place that we could not possibly stepped twice. With some minor slipups with the reservations, we were ushered to our tables and served with some bread ( cheese, dried tomato, french bread) and some butter.
We ordered one gastronomic seven course set and the rest was ala carte. The gastronomic set included specials that featured the seasonal white truffles.

Overall, I cannot really judge whether the modern Asian cuising here is really fantastic or poor for the price because this is only my first time experiencing food with a sky-high price and brand name. However, I can say that similar or even better-quality food can be found elsewhere. Certainly, this had been a rare experience and also an eye-opener. To be fair, there are both tasty dishes and rather lacklustre ones. Nonetheless, the service was marginally average and the timing of the serving of food has a lot of room for improvement.

Full story : http://dairycream.blogspot.sg/2015/09/peramakan-tangs-orchard-peranakan-style.html
Rojak, Ban Chang Kueh, Char Kway Teow, Chendol....I didn't expect the number of food stalls at TANGS basement to increase to the scale of a food court all of a sudden.
It was an unplanned decision to dine-in there with Pretty Mum as we were merely there to browse and buy some kitchen gadgets. With a weakness for all things Peranakan and spicy, we found a quick spot to try one of the stalls, Peramakan, since we only tried its Nyonya Buns and Kuehs from its takeaway outlet in Joo Chiat few years ago
The Nyonya Mee Siam ($6) is both tart and tangy, served with the powerful chincalok sauce for the extra kick. This dry version may be quite scarce on the ingredients like shrimps, etc. but it tastes even more flavorful than the usual wet Mee Siam. Even Pretty Mum who is super picky about her mee siam gave her thumb of approval.
Looking at the display of assorted chap chye and rendang, we could not resist the temptation but ordered some to go along with the Mee Siam (3 assorted dishes with rice at $7.80). Unfortunately, out of the 3 choices, I only enjoyed the Nyonya Chap Chye. The Pineapples Assam Fish was not fresh and it was difficult to ignore the powdery texture of the fish. Meanwhile, the Curry Vegetables could do with less coconut milk.
Interestingly, Peramakan has introduced a new series of French pastries with an Asian twist, on top of their already wide variety of kuehs and cakes. I instantly picked the two massive Cream Puffs in Teh Halia and Kopi Susu ($4.50), which sounded intriguing and unique.......

Comforting Mexican Soul Food OK Jun 19, 2015
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Latin American/South American | Mexican

The Red Snapper Burritos ($25) made a stunning entrance like a curvy oblong-shaped parcel, only to reveal a luscious interior of fish, borraco beans, Mexican rice and strands of Mozzarella-cheddar melting mid-way. This could be a potentially great dish if the snapper was not too dry.

The standout dish was the Shredded Steak Chimchangas ($25), a golden crispy flour tortilla that is deep-fried to perfection such that it kept the juicy strands of beef warm and comfortable while displaying resilience any sogginess. Drenched in generous amount of sour cream and guacamole, this giant plate of meaty "Popiah" roll is messy but speaks right to your soul.
I don't fancy banana desserts but I may have to take back my statement on the Banana Chimichangas ($14) here. Just like the earlier savoury chimichanga, the filling is substituted with bananas, deep fried till the shell turned into a crunchy fritter. Wallop a huge scoop of fragrant and buttery avocado ice cream and you'll get something that is ten times better than any chocolate lava cake or any hot-cold dessert. With a good selection of Mexican special cocktails and Margaritas, it is not surprising to see that business is booming even on a Tuesday night.

Mod-Sin Cuisine with Potential OK Apr 01, 2015
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Asian Variety | Singaporean Western | Restaurant | Desserts and Cakes

Lots of creative innovation is going on at the Quarters that has opened barely for less than 6 months since September 2014. The cooking might need to be more consistent but there is plenty of room to play with in the area of mod-Sin cuisine. Full review and pics on www.dairycream.blogspot.com
I thought the names of the Mains such as The Last Samurai, Raffles Gaga or Majie Indulgence were pretty creative but the cooking had its high and low points. The Great Escapade ($18.80 , above pic) is the most memorable mains that day; the pan-fried barramundi Lemongrass infused with ginger flower. The Majie Indulgence ($18) would be another successful example of fusion dish if the base was less sweet. I preferred a more robust spice kick.

Instead of the usual dory fillet, Leatherjacket fish was used for the Raffles Gaga ($16) but doughy fried batter and rubbery texture of the fish did not invite a standing ovation. But yes, the Curry Lime Tartar is so good it should also be sold in jars. Of the desserts, the Duriancanboleh ($7) is a Must Try for durian lovers; smooth pungent and creamy, the custard is not too sweet either.

After tasting most all the dishes, I realized that our favourites come from the Korean Section. The grilled pork and beef were cooked to the right degree with well-controlled seasoning. For full review and pics, visit www.dairycream.blogspot.com

What piqued my interest was this Acorn Jelly,a gelatinous square that tasted like seaweed with the special korean chilli dressing. There is also a delicious variety of bancai (side dishes) to go along with the steamed rice. In case you are not sure where to start from, head to the Korean section if "quality" is the thing you pursue instead of "quantity".

In conjunction with their 4th anniversary in Singapore, Todai presents an array of birthday dishes from mainly China, Korea Russia. I was surprised that Longevity Bun and Yi Mien Noodles are served instead of mian xian (vermicelli) and red eggs because the former are usually eaten to celebrate the birthdays of elderly people. It might be good to bring the pioneer generation here to try the promotion.
