Superb Must Try Norway Sandwiches Smile Jan 16, 2015

It has been a long time since I truly felt touched by honestly good food.

The moment I bite into the Kale and Mushroom, the cacophony of flavours simply exploded in my mouth without warning. Sweet, spicy, tangy......how can this humble looking sandwich taste so fabulous? I could not suppress my excitement and wanted to find out what magic has gone into this sandwich.

"It's Chilli flakes that we've infused into the olive oil and that tang comes from the clots of lemon milk juice cream you see on top of the mushrooms." answered the owner Traveen in a slow-paced Norwegian accent. Chilli flakes and lemon milk juice? WOW.

This brilliant inspiration can only be found here at Smor, Singapore's first Scandinavian Deli that is opened by food enthusiast twin brothers Traveen and Tarun Gulrajani. They were so captivated by the concept of Smorrebrod (which means "butter bread") during their 3-month tour of 12 Scandinavian cities that they decided to bring it to Singapore, elevating to an artisan level with quality ingredients all sources from Scandinavia.

It is not only the quality ingredients that make this worth. Like the Kale and Mushroom, the Crunchy Bacon is piled onto buttery and crisp toasted brioche bread that doesn't turn claggy with the moisture of tomatoes. Topped with side eggs, wilted baby spinach and shavings of emmental cheese, this warm open-faced sandwich is a great breakfast choice that tickles one's fancy.

These sandwiches worked amazingly better than most cold pleasure-less wraps as they are prepared fresh upon order. The warm versions easily gain the upper hands as our palates acclimatize to the heat but the cold sandwiches are seriously not bad either.

Instead of mundane ingredients like cream cheese and capers, the Smoked Salmon has a lovely acidic-sweet kick coming from the horseradish and dill-infused sweet mustard dressing which I mistaken to be honey at first.

Some might find the Norwegian hand-peeled shrimps to be tad salty but if you factor in the tangy lemon mayonnaise and the sprinkles of chives, it's a simple, refreshing yet addictive combo. These voluminous seafood filling are stacked onto gluten-free light rye bread is resilient enough to avoid saturation from the extra moisture, yet still soft enough that it doesn't wear out the muscles as you chow into it.

This is probably also the only place in Singapore where you can discover a fair range of Scandinavian chocolate snacks, savoury produce like caviar or coffee. I bought the Jaffa Nougatine bar ($2.50), some really good milk wafers at only $2.50 and the Shuffle Toffee Biscuits, the sinful combination of snickers, Mars and Toackers that are worth the calories. I have posted the Shuffle Toffee on my instagram here

Was it by chance that we managed to pick all four choices that were delicious? I seriously doubt so. Yes, the price of $6.90 for one sandwich, $12.90 for two and $17.90 for the Viking meal of three might seemed a little pricey or not satisfyingly sufficient for a meal. But trust me, a regular meal of two sandwiches are more than enough to fill you up. Moreover, if it's such a wholesome meal prepared with healthy ingredients, passion and sincerity, why not?

I seldom say that I will return to try the place but this I shall unabashedly say that a return is a must. Full review : www.dairycream.blogspot.com

Having tried the afternoon tea here twice, I must say that this is indeed one of the best places in town that offers exquisite quality food that does not bore me as its menu rotate every season.

I was mesmerized by the galore of Mediterranean dishes and desserts at the latest summer themed afternoon tea at Chihuly Lounge. The ten new whimsical desserts nearly tricked not only my taste buds but also my eyes. From Olive Macaron Starfish to Seaweed Slippers in cherry orange tones, those petite sweets definitely awakened my inner kid and drift you into a beautiful sandy landscape by a romantic sea.

Remember to pop one of their silvered pearls (caramel truffles) into your mouth and you know this is worth more than the real thing. The bursting flow of Salted Caramel is irresistible. I was quite impressed with the Rosemary Panna Cotta with Peach Jelly as it was so luxuriantly creamy that it did not disintegrate instantly in the mouth.

The Mediterranean focus extends to savoury delights and one of the must-try is the fist-sized Moroccan Style Stew Stuffed Chicken Wings permeated with herbaceous notes of coriander and some perky sour lemon. The innovative vegetable yellow pot was actually Roasted Yellow Squash stuffed with Pimiento and Manchego Cheese. Another of my favourite was the Batata Harra (Spicy Potato). It may resemble any other potato wedges but has absorbed the essence of garlic, chilli and olive oil.

Not just food, the service here is excellent, such that you can feel that every guest there is respected.
More than just whimsical. It's simply Mediterranean Magic. Try at least once if you haven't. Trust me, you won't regret.

Categories : Vietnamese | Hawker Centre

If a shop calls itself authentic, then it must really have the good stuff to earn that name. And this Vietnamese hawker stall at Ghim Moh is a good example of cheap, delicious and authentic cuisine.
Honestly, I seldom try Vietnamnese cuisine (the last one being Madam Saigon from Millenia Walk). But after hearing a tip-off from someone who has tried plenty of Vietnam food overseas, there must be something worth checking out.

A Must Try dish is Bun thit nuong ($4.50), a colorful medley of soft bee hoon crowned with grilled pork, fried spring rolls, cucumber and pickled carrots, chilli, mint leaf and toasted peanuts. I thought it looked dry but it wasn't.
Once you tossed everything evenly, every bite is full of sweet and sour juices that is superbly appetizing and refreshing for a hot afternoon. The char siew pork could be more thinly sliced as it was slightly dry and not fully marinated. But that few pieces of pork would not refrain one from enjoying the bowl.

For something hot, go for the Pho Bo- a slurpy piquant bowl of beef rice noodles ($4.50). This does not win points for complexity, but its simple ingredients--lean beef meat, mint leaf, corianders and a good beef stock bring out the flavours. Plus, it was not salty and so we emptied the bowl CLEAN.

Mango and Seafood Salad ($4.50) might sound and look a lot like the Thai Papaya salad. But no, this packs a much bigger punch and does not require a lot of teeth work to digest the dominantly raw greens as in Thai Salad.
Here, the mango are freshly grated into thin slices, then mixed with carrots and green papaya. The sweet-sour sauce tasted similar Bun thit nuong but this is so moreish that one goes for more helpings.

And every dish was excellent, from the noodles right down to the condiments. The light, non-greasy carbohydrates did not leave us feeling overstuff or thirsty. With such delicious, authentic and cheap Vietnam cuisine, I hope this stall can stay after Ghim Moh closed for renovation next year.

More at : http://dairycream.blogspot.sg/2012/10/singapore-restaurant-week-2012-covelli.html
We were here for the Singapore Restaurant Week but not only was the set menu excellent, the ala carte dishes were perfectly executed. Each 3 set course was only at $35 but do not belittle the portions.

Warm crunchy Garlic toastsmile better than bread roll with butter

Globe Artichoke & Eggplant Veloute with Crab Cheese Cremeux and Black Truffle Oil
Surprise tangy taste in a vegetable soup. One of the most unique tasty soup that is paired with uncommon black croutons. Transparent globs of black truffle oil accents the flavors of the vegetables but does not overpower the creaminess.
Slab of crab cream cheese is really salty and crabby ( like eating pureed crab) and thus matches well with the light bowl of soup

Classic Caesar Salad
near perfect rendition of the classic salad. No chicken but bits of crispy dark brown bacon with luscious poached egg. What is impressive is that each piece of lettuce is generously coated with cheese dressing.

Tuna Carpaccio with Lime Sorbet, Kumquat Oil and Chives
Sharp sweet lime sorbet in rectangular cube form enhances freshness and savouriness of raw tuna. Lime could be sashimi's next best friend after wasabi.

Root Beer Braised Berkshire Pork Jowls with Spinach & Ricotta Gnocchi, Bacon Butter and Pecorino Snow
Cannot really detect any beer but the pork jowls were really tender and easily pull apart.

Pan-seared Nile perch with crunchy brussel sprouts.
Sweet umami from sea urchin mango cream. Black calamari ink spaetzel tastes like chewy fried dough.

Covelli Supreme Pizza(*^◯^*)
For the price, the size speaks it's value. Bigger than the L size of home delivery pizza and able to feed more than 4. Like the crunchy slightly charred sides and thin crust. But cheese lovers would be disappointed as shredded mozzarella were too little to give the melty effect when u pull out a slice. Lack of effort to flavour tuna chunks results in bland taste even if pizza is topped with an egg.

Beetroot & Extra virgin olive oil cake with 60% Chocolate mascarpone
Innovative fusion flavors of vegetables into a dessert. Slightly salty moist cake. Bitter chocolate lumps that are a little harder than a usual mousse.

Did not regret choosing this place. Good quality food (even though that was the first night of Singapore restaurant week) , too-high service quality (with a knowledgeable server constantly standing at a distance from the table but yet able to hear every conversation)

Confessions of A Pastry Lover Smile Dec 20, 2012
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : English | European | Café | High Tea | Desserts and Cakes

For more details : http://dairycream.blogspot.sg/2012/11/twg-tea-salon-boutique-confessions-of.html

The only things that I have tried here are the pastries and I always do takeaway. Having been supporting TWG since its first outlet at Republic Plaza, I am glad to say that the quality of their pastries have remained consistent even after so many years. I am not over-exaggerating when I said that I have tried nearly all their cakes and is recognised as the "girl who always buy cakes". However, I am still trying out new stuff because the selection is always ever-changing.

The patisseries at TWG there rarely disappoint and I would dare say that it is the only place in Singapore that matches those in Paris or Japan. ( I was surprised when I walked past one branch in Jiyugaoka). Why? Simply because the pastries have textuality, technicality, creativity and of course flavours.

Most of the pastries at TWG are mousse cakes besides tarts. What impresses me is that the texture of the mousse is always just right while the sponge remains moist (perhaps some have been soaked in liquids). Fruit compotes of different berries ( raspberry/blueberry/cassis) are usually very sour which curbs the creaminess from other components. The tart shell has remained consistently crispy so far. While I can't say that every single piece I've tried is 100% perfect, I appreciate the chef's efforts to keep on inventing, playing with the flavours, textures and presentation. It is hard to spot a classic pastry here (perhaps the millefeuille or the signature chocolate fondant) but it is still possible to find new flavours in their classic pastries.

I doubt what I have commented will be readily available since the selection keeps changing. Amazed by the rapid expansion of this Singapore tea brand in Singapore and overseas in such a short period of time, it will be interesting to see what new exciting flavours TWG will offer in future.
