Coriander Leaf features an exciting Pan-Asian menu and is quite popular among the Clarke Quay district for its well-established fine dining scene. It is one of the popular dining stylish and relaxing bistro that is highly recommended by TripAdvisor as well as my visitor's tourist guidebook. Upon hearing my visitor's request to have a dinner in Coriander Leaf, I immediately took the number from her Guidebook and punched onto my handphone, thus our reservation was made day before.

Strict dinner timing was seen and practiced as their Business Hours starts officially at 6.30pm on the day of visit. We were led into Coriander Leaf at 6.30pm sharp and was greeted by a long flight of stairs with a well crafted wooden coriander leaf on its glass door handle.

The ending point of the stairs leads us to their bar. The coriander theme did fit well into the ambiance as the bar counters were even highlighted with coriander leafs patterns. We were then handed over to another friendly staff and he guided the way to our reserved seatings.

The dining room granted a mixture of rich cultures of Greater Asia in a modern settings. The style of having ceiling plastered with assorted red wallpapers in kinds of patterns had boast an elegant interior. Doors and glass frames were well set with walnut color that blends in perfectly to the entire ambiance with its cement screed flooring.

Our unique culinary journey was well begin with the Mezze (platter for 2) as the appetizers. The server had did his professional service by introducing each item on the platter and the way of consumption with his broad accent. The way how he presented had stirred up our interests in every aspect of food on that platter.

From the top of the platter in clockwise, Coriander Leaf had presented Harira (a mixture of chickpea & lentil soup), a popular traditional soup originated from Morocco.
Mezze (2 Pax)

Mezze (2 Pax)

To its right, the Tabouleh Salad, a traditional Arab Salad that made up of bulgar, tomatoes, parsley, mint and lemon juice. Tomatoes cubes were served chilled and the salad mixture tastes appetizing! Next we have another Middle East bite size Falafel on the platter. In layman terms, it looks like cookies topped off with some cream cheese to be but the fact is that Falafel is actually made up of chickpea and fava bean rissoles. Simply loves it unique taste! Ever wonder what are those 4 different balls on the platter? They are no quail eggs! In fact these are rich cheese balls that comes in Herbs - Za'artar (dried herbs with sesame seeds & others), sumac (some purple spice that add a tangy flavour), fresh mint and fresh coriander. Interesting right?

Next we have 2 big bowls of dips, the Muhammara (roasted red pepper & walnut dip) &
tahini (yoghurt dip) that goes well with a plate of plain Naan.

What an adventuours platter we had! Our dirty plates were cleared up promptly with an exchange of new plates and we were ready for our main dishes.

Oven Baked Coriander-Miso Gratinated Cod was indeed fresh with additional crisp on its skin. Matched with sesame-togarashi onigiri and sugar snap peas lined up nicely on the plate and summed up by line decorations drawn with miso emulsion.

During ordering, the professional server had actually checked with us the level of spiciness that we can handle and this dish was specially prepared based on the level. The Frontier Chicken was stirred fried with coriander seeds & minimal amount of chili flakes that sat in well in the middle of the plate in a pool of yoghurt cream topped with mizuna(a kind of japanese mastard). The dish was also accompanied by a plate of crispy plain Naan.
Cost: S$30.00

Lamb Kerbab comes with barbecued cubes of lamb with onion relish and fresh herbs accompanied by butter naan. The cubes are fork tender with not much of lamb's smell. One can dipped the button naan or cubes into the special cooling mint sauce.

Although the causal fine dining portions may seems small, it was actually stomach filling and we had no room for any desserts.

Let's visit Coriander's Toilet! The toilet was shared by both genders and as we swing opened the door, we were greeted by two brightly lited fish tanks by the side of the washing basins.

In conclusion, this will be one of the perfect choices with excellent service if you want to enjoy a unique mixtures of Cuisine with good scenery. Total worth what we are paying for! I bet that the entire experience will be many gastronomic thumbs up.

Vegetarian Paradiso! Smile Sep 04, 2013
Categories : Fusion | Café

Another new found in the west for Vegetarian food. Cafe De Paradiso serves a good variety of fusion food, Oriental and Western. Not only that with the availability of Cakes, Coffee (Expresso) & Tea, this make the word "cafe" more sound like it! With an interesting chinese name, "伯乐聚", it simply refer to a place where someone who have the ability to discover talent/skilled get together.

Environment was different. Considering that this cafe was actually located in the industrial premises, Ceilings are higher and entire place was furnished with good paint in green and white followed by flowery wallpapers on the wall where the humongous menu was displayed. Customers can enjoy ordering food through the handbook menu or the wall.

We were served by a thin guy who has some tattoo over his hand. His outlook had portrayed a fiery impression to us initially but the service we received was given a twist. We were not very familar with vegetarian food and he came over to our table a few rounds to check if we were ready to take order. Good suggestions were given and jokes were cracked making us chuckled as we replied in agreement to his suggestions.

Ice Blended-Orange Sunset & Iced English Rose Tea
Beverages were served shortly after order was taken. Orange sunset was special to us, it was a mixture of orange juice with vanilla ice cream blended together topped with a small sum of orange pulps.

My first impression of Iced English Rose Tea was overly sweet but after some stirring with Dried Rose buds and tea, the honey was well dissolved and everything seems good.

Claypot Noodle is a simple dish with noodle in claypot filled with assorted kind of vegetables and fungi. Soup base was sweet but did not have such intensive MSG taste as other vegetarian stalls I had before.

Out of the 2 mains, I will prefer the Hong Kong Style Clay pot rice. It had raised my attention with its mocked salted fish as well as its sausage. They tasted like the legitimate that I can hardly tell the difference. A handful of fried shredded ginger was added to in the clay pot enhancing the dish's fragrance. Rice was well cooked, not grainy. Do be careful not to get scalded by the claypot while dining.
Cost: S$6.00

From a non-vegetarian point of view, the plate of Homemade Vegetarian Satay is really an art. The outlook and appearance of it resembles the legitimate one entirely. However once you get a touch of it, you get to know the difference. Sticks of meat were served with a bowl of satay peanut sauce accompanied by chunks of cooling cucumbers. The softness of the meat had given the ideal "satay" away, it was too soft that the some of the meat dropped off while dipping them into the sauce and the taste I would say was close to the original's but one is still able to tell the difference.
Cost: S$6.00

Overall, I find that such dining environment serves a good gathering location for groups especially those who are vegetarians and don't mind having meatless meal as the place have catered big tables and space is spacious, even the toilet. tongue
One can even enjoy its Cafe serving of good blended coffee and cakes over chats.

My Treat to Mum Smile Sep 01, 2013

Categories : Cantonese/Hong Kong | Dim Sum | Roasted Meat

Just on a Sunday morning when most of us is still lazing at home under the comfortable shelter, we were already walking ups and downs in Ion Orchard before 11am, waiting for Taste Paradise business to be in operation. As usual, crowds were seen roaming about the main entrance even though dining is mainly due for reservations only. I walked up to the counter and indicated my presence with the ladies waiting my name to be called as I had made my reservations earlier on.

This was my second visit but this time round with a purpose - to treat mum for her upcoming birthday. Interior was set to oriental chic design with an impressive feel of ancient elegance as we strolled into the restaurant guided by the well dressed ladies in grand Chinese suits. It had given us additional majestic feel with the greetings of the staff as we approached the dining area. Set in the opulence orange lightings trails with the domino placement of vertical wooden boards on its ceilings had illustrated a swishing tail of a dragon body.

We were directed to a corner of the restaurant and have a bird-eye view of the place. Entire dining ambiance was made magnificence with its dragon's utensils, table cloths and menu covered by golden fabric.

Pickled vegetables (appetizers) were served with our beverages (Glutinous Rice Tea) and were promptly refilled by the waitresses. It tastes more towards "Tie Guan Yin" to me.
Cost: S$8.40

Xiao Long Bao with the proverbial flavorful soup that shoot and flows out of the delicate Bao skin. Though thin, it was moist and good enough to contain the soup as we picked it up by the tip (where you can find the thickest portion portion of skin throughout) noting the weight of the big chunk of minced meat within.
Cost: S$4.80 for 4

Chee Cheong Fun with Scallop. Savour the smooth, fine and thin rice roll with shredded chewy scallops wrapped within. Delicately made with fillings well contained without even breaking through the layers. Added with the light soy sauce and some hints of fragrance from the sesame oil, this version of steamed "intestine-liked" rice rolls are simply worth the taste buds.
Cost: S$6.20

BBQ Pork Pastries were simply heavenly. As the waitress doles out these freshly baked pastries in a plate of 3, these glossy looking golden pillows were seen flaky and delicate. As we bite, the red juicy BBQ pork fillings was packed to the fullest that every mouthful does have them within the pastries.

It's half time and I'm almost full. 2 Packets of Steam Glutinous Rice in Lotus Leaves, the classic "Lor Mai Kai" but with the "parcel" opening feel as we flipped up the lotus leaves, with the wonderful scent rushes into our senses. Tell me, it's just hard to stop at this!

Siew Mai was rather normal and did not have the "Wao" factor like the rest of the dim sum. I would prefer the meat to have a stronger meat taste as the roes added was a little salty for me.

Steamed Custard Buns is another noteworthy item that one cannot leave the restaurant without trying. While almost every dishes was remarkable, even for its desserts, we couldn't take our eyes off them. 3 of our desserts were exaggerating ! Check out in the video!

Lime with lemongrass was saltish yet refreshing. Quite refreshing to cleanse the palate after some major savoriness.

My First Spanish Bar & Restaurant Smile Sep 01, 2013

Categories : Spanish | Bars/Lounges | Paella

Serenity is strongly advocate for its yummylicious Suckling Pig through words of mouth and its attractive looking posters and advertisements pasted on the big pillars in vivocity. Due to its popularity, we had make efforts to go earlier for dinner, avoiding the peak period. As we approached the entrance, we were greeted in Spanish with "Hola" and was advised to wait to be seated. Within seconds of waiting, we were served by a lady.
Please Wait to Be Seated

Please Wait to Be Seated

Each of us was given a menu with a dancing lady on its cover indicating "dance to the delightful flavours of spain". I would say this is probably Serenity's Business tagline. Wine pages told up almost half the menu leaving the rest with delicious Spanish food well illustrated within.

Chosen to dine in the peaceful and quiet indoors rather than the outdoors. Seating were comfy, given that the chair I'm sitting on is of fabric with springy cushioning. Just in front of where I'm sitting, there is such a big rack of wine holders and we get to see a wide variety of wines available.

Salteado de Coles de Bruselas con Jamon Serrano (Sauteed Brussels sprout with serrano ham), it is not very common that we can find Brussels Sprouts and that's the reason for my order. Love the natural cute miniature cabbages, stirred fried with bacon, it sums up a simple yet fulfilling dish to me. Not too salty. Likes!

The Suckling Pig dish(Cochinillo Asado) by itself costs a bomb and we had to skipped it. Luckily we were introduced to the promotion platter and can shared among 3-4 pax. Platter consist of 2 30cm long sausages and 1/4 of Signature's Roasted Suckling Pig with a small portion of potato among the greens. This platter was accompanied by 3 sauces. Upon having this served, the waitress had actually introduce the items and the usuage for the sauces. Well Done!

The quarter of suckling pig was "cracklingly" good, especially its glorious crackling skin. Roasted to al dente perfection with succulent fleash, douse a bit of them into the flavorful sauces and enjoy. As we flipped the quarter up, what lies beneath is a bed of moist sauerkraut (sour cabbage), so simply European!
Cost: S$138

Arroz Negro (Black squid ink paella) is also another must tries. Squid ink, mussels, squid, tiger prawns, capsicum, rice were a simply a great combination. Seafood was fresh, especially prawns and the entire dish was adorn with green little peas.
Squid Ink Paella

It was rather an expensive meal as it sums up to S$251.64 for 4 of us. I feel that price is steep, perhaps Spanish cuisine is quite niche and not that available in Singapore. Having said this, I will still patronize Serenity given if I'm there for a special purpose!

French, Saveur Smile Sep 01, 2013
Categories : French | Restaurant | Seafood | Steaks and Grills | Burgers and Sandwiches

Saveur when translated from french means flavour and was known among my cohort of pals for its wallet friendly pricing french cuisine. The interior of Saveur was modern, with black and woody colors as its theme adorn with orange chandeliers hanging on the ceilings as well as the downlights. These lighting had been well reflected by the mirrors on the walls enhancing its ambience thus making the entire restaurant brighter.
Interior

Interior

Due to its overwhelming responses, Saveur practises strict dining policy and did not accept any reservations. For group dinings (even for just 2 of us), the server will ensure that all members of the group have arrived before issuing them a seat. In order not disappoint customers, they can leave their contact numbers and name down so that servers can follow up with them once queues are cleared. Whilst queuing, each of us is given a menu to read through.

We was directed to a table next to the big chiller that stores juices and wines where lights from the chiller had brightened up our dining place. smile

Being a french cuisine, it was known for its petite serving with sophistication - Food is elegant and with strong emphasis on its presentation. And our expectations had been bench-marked.

Our palates were tantalized by Saveur's Signature Pasta which was tossed in chilli oil, served with finely chopped Japanese konbu (seaweed) and Sakura Ebi (prawn/shrimp) with minced pork sauce. Presentation was impressive with its pasta rolled up and served on a dish like a cocoon. If you asked me about the taste, in layman terms, I would say it tasted close to "indomee" (brand of instant noodle) if you have tried before. Nevertheless, I enjoyed this starter!

How can one miss out the part and parcels of a french dish, the Foie Gras? The bite size pan-seared duck liver was served with lentils & pickled pearl onion. Although it might look abit unappetizing but it was real good enough for its flavours were all well burst within my mouth.

I was rather astonished to realize that this was the main course as the size of the plate was ideally my side dish. tongue Chicken Roulade was impressive though, with thigh stuffed with foie gras-infused chicken farce, creamy basmati rice & parmesan sauce. The latter had packed the dish with additional cheesy fragrance.

The dessert, Pistachio Panna Cotta , gave a riots of texture. Just before we enjoy the wobbly, creamy and smooth panna cotta, we will have to first enjoy the nutty crunchy bites of pistachio. It was not too sweet and most importantly not cloying at all!

Service was better than average. Given a few staff (excluding the chefs) to run the show in a full house during rush hours was seen more than efficient. Glasses of drinks were topped up from time to time with our tables dishes cleared and food were all served one after another on time in such sequence, Starters, Main then Desserts.

Total inclusive of GST and Service charge is $55.75. There were many players in the market for french cuisine and thus far, I find that Saveur has offered the most value for money meal. If you want to enjoy French Cuisine at a budget, she could just fit the bill.
