Soi Thai Kitchen Smile Jan 27, 2016

Categories : Thai | Restaurant

Firstly I have to thank my pal for introducing me Soi Thai Kitchen and to treating us in her so called "Territory". We were there around dinner timing and the place was seemingly full house with incoming patrons in a straight queue in front of Soi Thai. Crowd is there, with mostly families. It was a stark difference as compared Soi Thai Kitchen crowd to her neighbouring Thai Food Shop, a total world of difference. Soi Thai Kitchen was bustling with people while the other was the opposite.

Presentation was all good but as soon as we undressed the chickens from its pandan leaves and popped them into our mouths, the truth revealed. Marinate was not very much emphasized in the taste of the chicken over here, however, the taste resides more towards the charred flavours instead.

I like their style of serving egg with Thai Raddish, scrambled yet fluffy and not too dry with consistence flavours. Despite of its simplicity, its still a noteworthy choice among my orders.

Its hard to go plain on the bowls of white rice without a lip-smackingly good gravy like this! With minimum spicy level, the amount of coconut milk used here is decent and was not too cloying
Green Curry Chicken - $9

If you enjoy having a bowl of green curry, i bet you will like this!

Don't judge the bowl of Tom Yum Soup by its color. You will never know the level of spice until you have tasted one. Labelled with 2 Chillis in its menu to indicate its spiciness, I find that the bowl of soup has absolutely grabbed the authenticity of how a true blue bowl of clear Tom Yum Soup should taste. It's piquant taste in its spices were stimulating and excites the stomach. Like most places, you can have your bowl of Tom Yum Soup to be served with either prawn or chicken.

Although we were forewarned with 2 chillis on the menu as an indication to the level of spiciness, we had to surrender ourselves to this chilli hot salad and did not complete the dish. It was not only tongue but also lips burning. Do note that a few mouthfuls of it would have cause the mouth to be numb.

Perhaps they can give a better level of spicy indication to the dish as the level was indicated as the same to the Tom Yum Soup but in fact was hotter than it was intend to be. I guessed it was for some who can really take the challenge. No worries about it, I have been to Thailand and knew that this level of spice is totally chicken feat to the locals.

Some of us had our carbo fixed by bowl of white rice while the feminine would prefer Pad Thai for the fix. Pad Thai was decent but I was kind of disappointed with its taste as I had expected a plate of more fragrant and not too dry noodles. However, one good point to note that the prawns used were at least better than those pre-processed ones which could have given us a jelly and translucent appearance.
Pad Thai - $6

Washing down the dinner, we have selected the "should drink" from Thai Cuisine which are the Thai Milk Tea as well as the Lemongrass tea. I particularly like their Thai Milk Tea as I think that it brought out the authentic Thai Tea Flavours from the milk without being on a sweet side. While lemongrass tea was not bad either, just a bit sweet in my opinion.
Thai Ice Tea & Lemongrass Tea - $3 Each

Hits and misses, overall, Soi Thai Kitchen is a good place to enjoy some Authentic Thai Cuisine in Singapore as you can skip paying GST & Service Charge while dining. If only I reside in the East, I will not mind visiting this place often.

Pho Hoa Smile Nov 29, 2015

After Searching for Pho a while, it was such coincidental that my friend suggested that we go back to our favourite Vietnamese Cuisine Place at Pho Hoa in Holland Village. I started eating Pho many years back and came to know of such cuisine. Having tasted Pho in Vietnam and Singapore, the taste that got my most votes over all the years would be Pho Hoa.

Interior still remain the same after all these years with happy faces painted at the side of the walls, featuring families as well as children dining.

I can never forget the taste of Goi Cuon (Summer Roll) from Pho Hoa. Till today, I still think that they served the best Summer Roll out of so many places I went.

Shrimps, chicken, salad and rice vermicelli was well wrapped by the translucent moist rice paper. The hit of the dish is none other that the sweet peanut paste. That's an addiction.

Squid Pancakes were on its promotion list and new on its menu. Deeply fried to its tempting brown color with sesame seeds all clinging onto it, these 4 pieces of pancakes were great. The meat was bouncy and chewy. It reminds me of our Fish You Tiao. If you like Fish You Tiao, you won't mind having their squid pancakes.

Some of the restaurants have the sweet basil leaves and beansprouts all placed on top of your bowl of pho but in Pho Hoa, they have a practise to keep it separated. This is good as it gives customer a choice a add-on according to their preference. Two kinds of chillis were also provided and personally, I'm hooked to the sweet chilli in a dull red color. The chilli padi that looks fiery hot is really spicy. However, they served us at best when we dabbed a tender slice of beef onto it.

Come in two sizes, Regular or Large at a difference of $2 per bowl. Pho Chin Nac (Brisket Pho) is my all time favourite order from Pho Hoa. Beef slices were lean cut and tender, slightly cooked by the boiling broth to the perfect timing.
Love it

Broth is light and hearty with yellow onions and spring onions input. Additional toppings like beansprouts, sweet basils leaves and lime can be added base on your preference of taste.

If you are going for steak and meat balls, do try out their Pho Tai, Bo Vien. Comparing to the briskets, the steak is a little thicker but still having the good taste. As for their meat balls, its kind of off the shelves, quite ordinary.
I like their soup

Another addition into their new menu will be Beef Pho in the dry version. It is the opposite version of Steak & Meat Ball just that its in a dry version. This recommendation is not bad either.
Good but soup version is preferred

The sweet sauce with peanuts toppings, fried onions and spring onions made the dish special. Not forgetting the bowl of soup that comes in the set, its has a better infused taste of the beef.
Delicious

The closest Vietnamese Cuisine that I will recommend in the West is perhaps Pho Hoa which carries a healthier and natural flavoured soup.

BWB - Burgers VS Wings + Bar Smile Nov 12, 2015

Categories : Bars/Lounges | Burgers and Sandwiches

Over the last quarter I have seen enticing big juicing burgers popping up in my mailbox from Groupon featuring B.W.B. While waiting for my dinner mate and drawing close to meal times, I saw the queues piling up and BWB getting more occupied, thus by the time my dinner mate was there, we need to join the queue. Fortunately the wait wasn't too long.

Following the fighting theme in the restaurant, its quite interesting to see boxing accessories like punching mits, head gears, boxing shorts all around.

But one need not have to worry, there will be no boxing affairs going on during dining.

With ample of lightings, I would say that the ambiance was really comfortable and suitable for people to wind themselves down after a hard day of work.

As I'm more interested in the Boxing accessories, I decided to stay under the air-conditioned environment. Interestingly, table number with big sticker pasted on the center, looks abit retro here with some portions missing.

Smoothing our night, we had these instead of Alcohol that was 1 for 1. The smoothies was not too bad, just that the Honey Orange flavoured drink tasted abit unusual without Orange flavour.

The heavy weight wings was aromatic but at the sight of it, I was expecting something more plump from its name but it did not seem to leave up to its namesake. When I picked them up, they were not heavier than any of the usual wings I had. They were deep fried into crispiness and had its meat pushed upwards revealing its bone at the lower bottom. I felt abit short change for there was more chicken skin than meat.

Classic Burgers is one of the Champion Choice with stockyard Angus Beef patty, smoked bacon, chilli con corng, sunny side egg, french mustard, tomato onion, cheddar cheese and sesame brioche bun. The beef patty, if was a little more juicer will be good.

I have heard abit about their burgers especially their Tyson Burger that comes with nutty bites.Using Stockyard angus beef, streaky bacon, arugula leaves, sunny side egg, cheddear cheese and sun-dried tomato bricohe bun with peanuts spread. Its really a good idea having burgers with such crunchy peanuts spread which give a nutty fragrance and crunchy texture. Though it may be a uncommon combination, it tasted quite good.
Tyson Peanut Butter Burger - $21.90

Matching our lonely burgers, we had topped up $3.80 each for a basket of fries. There were nothing impressive on those two fries just that the Cheese Fries was close to what one of the fast food restaurants was serving but with a firmer fries texture.

Likewise for the other type of fries, the creation was simple, with fried chopped garlic sprinkled over them.
Garlic & Parsley Fries - $3.80

After having a number of burgers meals recently, BWB Burgers are said to be better than average. However, on the pricing side, I would say its on a high side with all the food above, our bill end up to be $80 over for 2 pax. Still, overall, it was a good experience.

If you are running out of cafes / places to go in the West for some gathering or chit chats, perhaps you can try going to On The Table which is just located a walking distance away from Pasir Panjang MRT station.

With similar concept to Lola's Cafe in Kovan, On the Table's Interior was rustic, whereby floor was just only cement screed with wall painted off white furnished with yellow furniture. If you dont know who is behind OTT (On The Table), they are actually the similar folks from Lola's Cafe.

Toasted buns, stuffed with house smoked pulled pork spread with BBQ sauce and purple slaw with thick cut potato fries placed beside the burger, making the meal a complete one. It really beats me when I saw the word "Gnocchi" till I figured them out on the bowl. Potato Gnocchi is actually thick yet soft dough dumplings. I find this dish rather appetizing especially the 63 degree Celsius cooked poached egg was broken and mixed with shimeji mushrooms, broccoli and Parmesan cheese.

In case if you are still wondering where did the good old 89 Zion Road Cze Char went to, well, they are right here located in the heart of Serangoon Gardens. Now proudly presents, the Lost & Found Siang Hee Seafood!

I'm quite skeptical having steamed fish in Hawker Centre and always try avoiding such dishes but since Siang Hee has a reputable name, we gave the Garlic Steamed Fish a try. We all knew that the need required to prepare a fish dish can be long with steaming process and least expectingly, it came first on our table. Fish was absolutely fresh and steamed to perfection with tender white meat lending some nods from us. Black Soya Sauce as well as Ginger Strips gave additional fragrance to the dish, not mentioning the aromatic fried garlic too!

This is the star of the night. From articles of the media, Pork Knuckle is not to be missed here. It did really sweep my feet off! If you are wondering if they taste like the German Pork Knuckle, I would say they are better in terms of crispiness and not too hard, yet retaining the moisture as well as the required succulence. Dipped these pieces into the given sweet spicy sauce and enjoy the tender bites. Yums!

Oyster Egg Omelette on the hotplate was nothing but rather standard. Egg was quite watery topped with few pieces of big oysters and garnished with fried garlic. Perhaps it would be a better choice to grab some oysters egg from its direct neighbour stall if you are craving for such dish.

Though there were long lists of order before us, queuing was a breeze. The order taking Aunty was friendly and promised that it would not take us long before the food was served. Overall experience was good and we left with a satisfying stomach.
