If not for the recommendation by my friend, I would never have discovered such place for braised duck and fish soup. Well, what a combination!

Although there are so many eateries in Geylang, be surprised that the coffee shop environment is actually crowded by office workers from nearby. Luckily we were there earlier and did not have to worry about seating. After which, we went up to the counter and order our food.

We choose our braised platter based on the items we like. We had braised duck, pork trotters, eggs, intestines, Tau Gua and Tau Pok. The duck meat was braised till so tender that we almost mistaken the meat as pork. However, we love the braised meat over here including the intestine as they were well handled and tasty.

Good to go with rice or porridge as it might be very salty and oily to consume alone.

Was rather please to have a bowl of lukewarm porridge with braised gravy and chunks of braised duck meat. The style of the porridge had the kind of homely taste which you normally wont find it from usual hawker stalls ~ Teochew Grandma Style Dish.

The other dishes not to let your stomach go empty with will be their fish soup. They provide fresh sliced pieces of fish in clear soup. Dish was simple and straight forward with preserved greens, cabbages and seaweed. Plain light meal but broth was tasty and flavorful.

I like the nostalgic taste of food especially the braised duck. Since operating hours of Hong Qin Fish & Duck Porridge is till mid noon on the weekdays (Batang Fish sold out fast), it will be more likely that we will be visiting them in the weekend instead.

http://www.umakemehungry.com/2017/11/49-seats.html

Starting with humble beginnings with 49 Seats (this is how they got their name) at Kreta Ayer Road in 2012 and now they have move to a bigger shop space in Orchard, Centrepoint. 49 Seats are known for their Western Fusion Asian dishes at affrodable pricing.

Interior was casual with a good similar industrial chic look that contains bright hanging lights, metal chair. What caught my attention was the items that was sprayed coated in silver that sticked onto the wall. Totally Creative! Initially I thought they were just the usual props made especially for decorations but as I touched it, I realized they were all recycled items. How interesting with plastic cups, spoons, forks, plates, egg trags and even egg trays.

Tom Yum Seafood pasta is rated as A spicy lover must try. Looks like this dish is highly raved because of its uniqueness. The Tom Yum was served cream base with seafood like mussels and prawns. It packed a good punch of sweetness, sourness and spiciness in every mouthful of spaghetti. This is in fact semi spicy and the bestseller here.

Another recommendation on its menu will be their Seafood Marinara and a good alternative if you are not keen in spicy Tom Yum. Pasta is pretty tasty with mussels and prawns paired with tomato sauce.

Seafood Marinara - $13.90

Adding $4.90 to my pasta for set of additional soup of the day and 1 soft drinks. I had the Cream of Brocoli with garlic bread by the side of the double layer bowl. The soup was not quite hot, however still able to warm up the tummy.

The environment did leave a good impression. As we were only there for pasta, we have not tried out the other western food dishes. It will be good to be back again.

Spending per head: Approximately $20(Dinner)

Nurul Delight OK Nov 08, 2017

Categories : Malay | Coffeeshop

http://www.umakemehungry.com/2017/11/nuruls-delight.html

Looks like we have another option here for Malay Food that is popular among the district over here. To my surprise, I realized the long queue while we were lining up to purchase our breakfast dishes.

Nurul Delights

Besides the usual dishes, they are also selling Kueh ranging from $1 to $1.20. We bought the Ondeh Ondeh and felt it was nothing out of the ordinary. The fillings did not have the oozing feel once you bite on it and in fact the "skin" was rather thick and texture was not to our liking.

Ondeh Ondeh Kueh - $1.20

Ondeh Ondeh Kueh - $1.20

Mee Rebus came in generous portion and was strong in prawn taste. It is topped with condiments like fried shallots and coriander. We told them to remove green chilli.

Mee Rebus - $2.50

Mee Rebus - $2.50

If you realize, their Mee rebus, Mee Siam were all served in bowls instead of the usual plate we seen in most plates. Squeeze some lime juice over and mix the tangy gravy with sambal chilli together and savour them up.

Mee Siam - $2.50

Mee Siam - $2.50

At the price of the Mee Soto, I will say its value worth for money as big chunks of chicken was given and gave me a filling stomach over the breakfast. We topped up the original $2.50 portion with $0.50 for a piece of bagedil. Chicken soup was murky and noodles were soft enough.

Mee Soto - $2.50

The reason why people faithfully queue for the Nurul's delight is perhaps this plate of fragrant Nasi Lemak that cost $2.50. The Nasi Lemak is upgraded with chicken nuggets as well as bagedil. The sambal chilli is commendable as it smells good in its smoky, sweet-spicy goodness.

With inflation, most of such dishes are already priced at $3 as the minimum but still in the neighborhood of Bukit Batok, we are lucky to have found such pocket friendly dishes.

Out of all food ordered, it generally explained what the crowd is there for. I will strongly recommend to try their Nasi Lemak as priority even though I am not a fan of rice.

http://www.umakemehungry.com/2017/11/angus-house.html

I have been walking pass Angus House umpteenth times but never has the chance to step in until just this year. It was a celebration meal for a birthday and finally we had the chance to explore Angus House. Angus House is quite easy to locate as she is on the 4th Level of Takashimaya, next to the Toys / Children Department .

I quite like this open concept kitchen part of the restaurant whereby we were able to take a click preview of the chef busying in the kitchen.

Internally is well lited, under the spacious and romantic lights, environment makes it cozy and relaxing. With attentive servers around, I would say that their service is prompt and smiley.

It is perfect place for a first date. Also, it is recommended to make reservation and secure a seat.

We were there for steak but to make it a meal with appetizer, soup, salad, bread and dessert, we topped up $15 each and find it quite worthy.

Appetizer was a big piece of salmon with flaky bread stick and sweet sauce.

Reminds of my Mos Burger Style of Salad and immediately I know they are common as its Japanese! Greens was crunchy with cherry tomato, Japanese cucumber, corn kernels, cabbages and dressed with roasted sesame sauce.

Salad We had the escargot as our sides. Well baked with herbs and butter, served sizzling hot. I'm not really a fan of these shells but I think the style of preparation were rather fragrant.

You can still hear the sizzling and bubbling effect of butter together with escargot when they serve to the table.

Environment was quite cold and just right with a warm bowl of calm chowder.

This is not the usual Western Style Steak I had. In case you are not aware, Angus House is mainly serving Japanese Style Beef Steak as well as pasta and the type of serving may not be what you have on mind if you are thinking along Morton's Style.

The 200g Sirloin Steak comes in a sizzling hot plate direct from the kitchen in Medium-Well doneness as requested. A piece of savoury herb butter and slice of lemon was placed on the steak, as the heat rises, the butter melts accordingly. Steak was definitely soft and texture was friendly with the knife.

While the man had a bigger portion of 300g Steak from the Rib Eye at Medium doneness. Similarly, the steak was juicy and tender just like I had my Sirloin.

Desserts have option of Cheese Cake or Tiramisu. Since we are having 2 sets, we opted for both and ended our dinner with sweet endings. Cheese cake came with a very moist biscuit base and was light in taste, not too cloying. I love the Cereal and the dash of raspberry sauce and cream by the side.d

Tiramisu was light and tasty coupled with honey melon, dragonfruit, mint leaf and strawberry. It was real good and in fact I dont mind having another piece if they do offer.

At least I can strike off the To Visit / To Eat from my list after visiting Angus House. The quality of food and service are commendable. I won't hesitate to recommend my friends here if they want to try Japanese Style Beef.

Chiew Kee Noodle House Smile Nov 08, 2017

http://www.umakemehungry.com/2017/11/chiew-kee-noodle-house.html

Never notice that there are 2 Soya Sauce Chicken Noodle house along Upper Cross Street until I visited Chiew Kee Noodle House that day. I have always patronized Chew Kee and have never knew Original Chiew Kee Noodle House is just located 100 metres away from each other.

2 similar shops like this in the same row was quite an usual sight and straight away it gave me a thought that there must be some conflicts in the family that lead to this.

Chiew Kee Noodle House

Chiew Kee Noodle House

It seems like Chiew Kee Noodle House is more quiet among the staff while the other shop is more rowdy in the sense that the family members communicate loudly in cantonese across the coffeeshop.

We were their first customer of the day and seats was ample. There were notices that pasted on the wall mentioning that the tables will be shared in the event that there was not enough seating in the coffeeshop.

Very well seasoned plate of soy sauce chicken whereby meat was juicy and tender. Simply love the perfection of the moist chicken with its thin layer of soy infused chicken skin.

Half Soy Sauce Chicken including drum - $14

Though the generous savory pool of soy sauce may look abit overpowering here but this soy sauce actually gave a subtle sweetness to the meat. Using a secret blend of herbs, spices with soya sauce achiving such wonderful standard. We order a half chicken to share among 3 of us instead so we can each order individual bowl of plain noodles.

Noodles were light and springy, comes with some leafy greens, soaking up with their light Soy Sauce, flavoring the plain noodles.

In the same fashion like the Mee Kia, Kway Teow was soaked in the soy sauce too. It is light and flavourful and not clumping up in a mass.

Dumplings in clear broth comes in 2 sizes, $3 or $5. We had the latter and shared among ourselves.

Bowl of Dumplings Soup - $5

Each and every of the dumplings filling were well encased and tightly dressed up in its skin. Let's bite on it and taste the difference.

Dumpling Taste was out of the ordinary and on a salty side. However, the dumplings were still rather special as the minced meat were pretty dark in color, most probably coated in dark sauce. Taste was rather distinctive with mushrooms, pepper, sesame oil and black fungus as ingredients.

Even though I have not visited their siblings Noodle House for long time, I find that the food here is more on the saltier side while Chew Kee's is more on a sweeter side. Looks like I have to make a trip down to Chew Kee Noodle House and have a bite again.
