Triggered by the number of flavours of Swiss rolls available and the richness of the Kaya Rolls that I had the day before, I had got a surprised from someone who bought me 4 flavours of rolls. He must have triggered by the words of praises given!

Rolls were good especially when they were chilled. We was told by the lady that no preservatives were added. Out of the four flavours tried, I will say that what I like best is the kaya's flavour. The cold layer of cream that was rolled up between the kaya roll definitely packed a strong fragrance like the yellow durian swiss rolls. It was filled with lots of durian fresh and durian lovers out there, this is a must try!
Cost: Kaya - S$7.50
Durian - S$7.50

Chocolate flavour swiss roll was dark brown in color and was filled with some cream in between. It tastes not as sweet like the usual swiss rolls I had and instead, chocolate tastes bitter. Strawberry Swiss Roll was pretty pink in color and comes with strawberry jam and bits of strawberry in it.
Cost: Chocoloate - S$6.50
Strawberry - S$6.50

Rojak Revisited! Smile Sep 06, 2013
Categories : Singaporean Chinese | Hawker Centre | Salads/ Acai Bowl

I had vividly remember that there was a famous rojak in Whampoa Hawker Centre as from the last round of visit about a decade ago. I went through every rows in the Hawker Centre to look for the famous rojak stall, lo and behold, it was still there and as expected long queues were seen. I had waited almost 20 minutes for my smallest portion of Rojak ordered.

Ingredients were fresh with crunchy fried fritters (You Tiao), turnip, cucumber, pineapple, beansprouts and a generous amount of peanuts. What overwhelms me is its luscious aplenty of peanut gravy with prawn paste and the small portions jellyfish was found in the Rojak. Sugar crystals were dissolved through the thorough mixing skills by the man. Greens are also added which stands up in the brown and "peanuty" dish.mad

Fresh buds can be seen on a container placed in front of the stall and the stalls owners are quite opened about the brands of century eggs they were using too.

Since the dish was served in a disposable plate, do remember to put some weight over the empty plates to avoid the strong wind generated from the Hawker Centre's Fans blowing them away & hit on others. smile

Rich & Good Smile Sep 05, 2013

Given a box of swiss roll in a traditional boring old looking box and was told to distribute and share the joy. The swiss roll was wrapped with another layer of transparent plastic packaging in the box, rolled up and I thought, its just another traditional cake again. I didnt even take a second look and headed into the pantry. I took the knife, cut and distribute the roll equally as told. Mistakenly assumed that it was a pandan swiss roll until I had a closer look at the box, it was actually kaya flavour.

I took one of the slices and pop it into my mouth immediately. To my surprised it give me a very different feel and jumped in joy. Boy! It was just too good to be true and way above my expectation! Without further ado, I text some of the close colleagues to gather at my place and share the goodies.

The chilled homemade kaya cake once bitten had given me a burst of sensual pleasures that I haven't come across on any cakes so far. The cakes are far more than fluffy with the spongy layers rolled up forming a nice sweet swirls by the sides. Taste of kaya swiss rolls were heavenly, rich and good as what the cake shop name is, something to die for.

Cost: S$7.50

Vegetarian Paradiso! Smile Sep 04, 2013
Categories : Fusion | Café

Another new found in the west for Vegetarian food. Cafe De Paradiso serves a good variety of fusion food, Oriental and Western. Not only that with the availability of Cakes, Coffee (Expresso) & Tea, this make the word "cafe" more sound like it! With an interesting chinese name, "伯乐聚", it simply refer to a place where someone who have the ability to discover talent/skilled get together.

Environment was different. Considering that this cafe was actually located in the industrial premises, Ceilings are higher and entire place was furnished with good paint in green and white followed by flowery wallpapers on the wall where the humongous menu was displayed. Customers can enjoy ordering food through the handbook menu or the wall.

We were served by a thin guy who has some tattoo over his hand. His outlook had portrayed a fiery impression to us initially but the service we received was given a twist. We were not very familar with vegetarian food and he came over to our table a few rounds to check if we were ready to take order. Good suggestions were given and jokes were cracked making us chuckled as we replied in agreement to his suggestions.

Ice Blended-Orange Sunset & Iced English Rose Tea
Beverages were served shortly after order was taken. Orange sunset was special to us, it was a mixture of orange juice with vanilla ice cream blended together topped with a small sum of orange pulps.

My first impression of Iced English Rose Tea was overly sweet but after some stirring with Dried Rose buds and tea, the honey was well dissolved and everything seems good.

Claypot Noodle is a simple dish with noodle in claypot filled with assorted kind of vegetables and fungi. Soup base was sweet but did not have such intensive MSG taste as other vegetarian stalls I had before.
Cost: S$5.00

Out of the 2 mains, I will prefer the Hong Kong Style Clay pot rice. It had raised my attention with its mocked salted fish as well as its sausage. They tasted like the legitimate that I can hardly tell the difference. A handful of fried shredded ginger was added to in the clay pot enhancing the dish's fragrance. Rice was well cooked, not grainy. Do be careful not to get scalded by the claypot while dining.
Cost: S$6.00

From a non-vegetarian point of view, the plate of Homemade Vegetarian Satay is really an art. The outlook and appearance of it resembles the legitimate one entirely. However once you get a touch of it, you get to know the difference. Sticks of meat were served with a bowl of satay peanut sauce accompanied by chunks of cooling cucumbers. The softness of the meat had given the ideal "satay" away, it was too soft that the some of the meat dropped off while dipping them into the sauce and the taste I would say was close to the original's but one is still able to tell the difference.
Cost: S$6.00

Overall, I find that such dining environment serves a good gathering location for groups especially those who are vegetarians and don't mind having meatless meal as the place have catered big tables and space is spacious, even the toilet. tongue
One can even enjoy its Cafe serving of good blended coffee and cakes over chats.

Rojak from Malay Stall Smile Sep 03, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Hawker Centre

Power Rojak Bandung is one of famous Rojak stall that had won a few consecutive years of awards from Makansutra as seen from the number of certificates sticked on its stall. Having said this, their rojak served is no closer to those Indian Rojak but rather similar to our chinese mixed fruits and fried fritters rojak.

Service is consumer friendly I felt especially when it was stated self service but the helper offered to deliver the dish to my table.

Specialised in Rojak, there were a handful of varieties given. We were just simply spoilt for choices. Ordered the cheapest version, Char Kway Rojak which consist of solely Char Kway (Fried Fritters) and shared among ourselves over lunch. "Heh Gor" (prawn paste) was sufficiently spread among the plate with peanuts sprinkled all over them. Look at that plate! Every piece of the char kway has carried those peanuts "glitters" on them coated with the sweet tasty prawn paste sauce. On top of that, squeeze the lime and let the juice keep a good balance of spiciness between the dish. I strongly recommend their Rojak given that the char kway were heated up before serving! smile
