Soi Thai Kitchen Smile Apr 29, 2019

Categories : Thai | Restaurant

Lately, Soi Thai has been my frequently visited eatery. Having visited Soi Thai Kitchen in Tampines & Soi Thai Kitchen in Jurong West quite some years back, I'm glad that they are spreading the wings further creating more outlets offering more wallet-friendly authentic Thai Cuisine.

This is our all time favourite and with request of less spiciness so that we won't be swallowing down the chilli seeds. We prefer the clear version and customers can have the choice of chicken Tom Yam or Seafood Tom Yam Soup.
Clear Tom Yam Soup 冬炎清汤 - $7

Mango Salad is one of the recommendations in the menu. Its appetizing and too we requested for the less spicier version. Shredded mango is tossed with the peanuts, fish sauce, coriander, carrot, onions and lime juice. It's quite addictive and make a great side dish.
Mango Salad 芒果沙拉 - $6

Their fishcakes come in a plate of four and is recommended to order especially if you have kids. Its fried and crispy at the exterior, different from the ones that most Thai Restaurant would serve. Fishcake is springy and great to go with their sweet chilli sauce.

Beautifully served in star shape in pieces of 8, suitable for sharing if you are dining in group.
Thai Pan Fried Prawn Pizza 泰式虾披萨 - $10

If you are looking to order greens from their menu, the Stir Fried Kai Lan is of excellent choice. It is fried together in minced garlic and oyster sauce with slices of carrot.
Stir Fried Kai Lan 芥蓝炒蚝油 - $7

We simply love the Premium Fried Pork Cheek as its roasted to perfection, crispy outside with crunchy edges and was not too dry. Meat was chewy and best combination if you dip them into the given chilli sauce.
Premium Fried Pork Cheek - $12

If you love the scent of basil, you may like to order this dish and pair along with rice. This is one of the popular ordered dishes among the diners especially if you are dining in a group and sharing dishes.
Basil Pork九层塔炒猪肉碎 - $7

Though Stir Fried Clams with Thai Chilli Sauce is a recommended dish on the menu, we did not find the dish anything out of the ordinary. It's spicy as indicated and the only thing is that the clams were fresh.
Stir Fried Clams with Thai Chilli Sauce泰式辣味啦啦 - $12

Squid rings are recommended as they are meaty and fresh. The lime juice together with the chili gravy had given a zesty sour yet sweet and spicy flavour to the dish.
Squid with Lime Sauce 辣椒柠檬墨鱼- $10

Squid with Lime Sauce 辣椒柠檬墨鱼- $10

If you are going for individual portion, you can try ordering their Thai Fried Kway Tiao. The "Wok-Hei" together with the kiffir Lime had spelt a difference on the dish. Ingredients are simple slices of  carrot, chicken, Kailan and egg.

A dish that you either like it or hate it. While I enjoy the fragrance of olive oil, I find that the dish is tastes great though it might looked plain without much ingredients.
Olive Fried Rice 橄榄炒饭 - $6

The soft sweet savoury pineapple fried rice was a spot on. Ingredients lend a good texture with chewy raisins, crunchy cashew nuts and fragrantly prepared together with meat floss.
Pineapple Rice 黄梨炒饭 - $6

We had Red Ruby dessert to complete our meal. Glad that dessert tasted alright without having overpowering coconut milk taste with sago. What's more, I love the crunchiness of the rubies.
Red Ruby 红宝石 - $3

The milk tea has subtle tea fragrant, not too strong and a good milk taste, likewise for the Ice Thai Green Tea, both level of sweetness is great.
Thai Iced Tea & Thai Ice Green Tea - $3 Each

Thai Iced Tea & Thai Ice Green Tea - $3 Each

Soi Thai Kitchen is serving authentic Thai Food at affordable pricing without GST charge. Basically that's the main reason why we are returning there so often! I guess its queue also tells us that its well-liked by many.

http://www.umakemehungry.com/2018/03/pocoloco.html

Despite residing in the West Side for such long period, I only get to know of PocoLoco through words of mouth from my friends and colleagues. This is truly a hidden find located at the heartlands of Level 2 Snow City just beside Science Centre.

The ambiance was causal and welcoming with simple furnishings laid out in the dining area under the warm lighting.

We had Carpaccio (Chef Recommendation) as our starters. It was quite appetizing with thinly sliced beef tenderloin garnished with balsamic vinegar and a dash of truffle essence. Together with the rocket salad and cherry tomatoes topped with Parmesan Cheese shavings, it was addictive.

Carpaccio - $13.50

Mushroom soup was one of the chef's recommendations too. Like that the soup was warm and taste was pleasing to stomach without being too creamy.

My friend had tried the Mushroom soup and decided to order their tomato soup. Initially I thought it was just normal tomato soup till it was served where I get to see the clams in it. Tomato seafood soup was tangy and has a mild seafood taste, it was a well balance of taste without one another's taste overpowering each other.

We was craving for Vongole pasta all along and hoping that this will be our fix. The pasta noodles were al dente, firm and yet having the springy texture. Altogether it was a great pairing up with these clams in white sauce.

Some of the menu are seasonal and we had the Roasted Iberico Pork in Brown Sauce as one of our mains. The mean was well seasoned and roasted, coupled with some potatoes, corns and french beans as the side. It was a great pairing in the brown sauce and meat was fork tender. Recommended!

We are kind of too use to the usual chocolate lava cake, hence we decided to order the Matcha Lava which is also one of their Chef Recommendations. Having desserts make one happy. Upon serving, you can whiff the strong aroma from the Matcha Cake. For those who love to take videos for the social media, this is a very good chance! As soon as you cut open the cake, the lava starts flowing profusely. Well, having the lava alone is simply for the sweet tooth, I will say it is best to go with the vanilla ice cream if you don't really take sweet stuff.

Matcha Lava - $10.90

To be honest, I love the ambiance and settings of the restaurant. Too bad we were driving and couldnt order their home brew alcohol. I bet the next time round when we are back, we will want to try the beers and not forgetting other chef recommended dishes that were left on the menu.

http://www.umakemehungry.com/2018/01/prima-tower.html

Prima Tower revolving restaurant is the only revolving restaurant in Singapore. Being established in 1977, they are located at Keppel Road, sitting on top of a grain silo, serving Beijing Cuisine as well as dim sum for lunch. Having visited 4-5 times here on Business Agenda, this place and her food had never failed to entice me.

Locating the restaurant may be a little tricky as a miss in a turn will make you go a big round to locate it. Since its located within Prima's premises, parking lots are rather limited. However, valet services are provided for diner, thus one do not have to get stress out of parking lots.

Once entering the lobby area, diners have to take the lift up followed by a flight of winding stairs to reach the 11th floor then escalator. Interior is in line with the old school traditional vibe with rosewood furnishing, fish tank, round tables with lazy Suzy and square tables. Atmosphere is like tuning into a time machine, going back in time into 1980s.

The entire one round of revolution takes about an hour and of course the best seats are by the side of the windows offering a panoramic view to the surroundings to the PSA and Sentosa Island.

On our visit, we had the Menu 5 for 6 persons instead of ala carte.

Menu for 6 Persons

Shredded Scallops with Fish & Egg White is one of Prima Tower's Signatures. The dish was served with ingredients segregated, thereafter the server will perform the mixture of egg, egg white, fish and scallops in front of us.

Despite of the dish name in Mandarin that mentioned crab, there was no sign of crab as an ingredient. The combination of ingredients blend well into one another which is sweet and delighting to our palates, very suitable to start off our meals like this. To enjoy this starting dish, add some black vinegar and pepper for taste.

Yummy Serving of Shredded Scallops with Fish & Egg White

2nd dish on the menu was Fish Maw and Seafood in Thick Soup. Similar to the 1st Dish, we added vinegar and pepper for taste. The serving is prepared in personal potand the thick soup too, was fresh and refreshing.

Glistering Peking Duck will be parked by a side on a trolley waiting to be carved by the skillful waitress / waiter. If you are wondering where does the rest of the meat gone to after having its skin encased in the egg wrap. Well, the meat can be used as ingredients for other dishes such as fried rice.

We have ordered egg wraps and staff will fill the wrap with the crispy duck skin, spring onion and bean sauce.

Soon Hock Fish was served in Teochew style with light and tasty broth. The meat was tender and topped with garnishing like coriander and chilli stripes.

Another dish that struck me by surprise will be their stewed pork ribs that was served separately with buns. In Dialect, Hokkien language, we called this "Kong Bak" where by this braised meat was sandwich in between the pieces of fluffy buns. In this case, its more of pull pork. The meat was fork tender and easily fell off with little force asserted.

These pork meat was very flavorful in its generous serving of braised sauce with a few stalks of coriander to enhance its taste. Having said that, the pork was not greasy at all.

Pull Pork?

The buns that come in a set with the Stewed Pork are fluffy and looked different from the usual "flat pouches" kind of bun we had from else where. Instead, these came in shapes and had some lines patterns on the surface.

Soup was sweet and delighting with Chinese spinach, shredded scallops, wolf berries in superior broth.

An ending surprise with souffle balls encased with red bean stuffing. Even though it was fried, exterior was not greasy and amazingly soft. Initially we thought desserts was fish balls but the skin was soft, taste of egg white and chewy.

I love its texture, also given that the red bean stuffing was not too sweet.

Stuffing

And just this month, we visited in smaller group and ordered Menu 4.

Menu 4

A popular delicacy in a Chinese restaurant whereby sharkfin was flavored in stock. Soup was great with ingredients like Fish Maw, crab meat, fish and chicken.

Enhance the taste of the delicacy by adding black vinegar and pepper.

Adding Vinegar

Adding Vinegar

Similar to the previous menu, this staple item of Prima's is included. I just never get bored of having this signature dish of theirs.

Comparing to the Teochew Style Steamed Fish in the earlier visit, it seems like the cohort prefers this! Fish meat was portion out into the best equal sizes. The batter was soft, light and meat was tender.

Given sweet sauce and salt pepper combination, I will prefer the former on my fish.

Likewise in this Menu, we are still having their Authentic Barbecued Peking Duck without fail, observing the servers skillfully carved the skin under the stressful eyes of ours.

And this round, we have ordered the normal wraps for the Peking Duck instead of the egg wrap we ordered during the last round. The normal wrap ios

Braised Slices of Abalone topped the Broccoli. Sauce was savory but a tad starchy for me, not totally of my preference.

Ending our meal with a sweet Honey Dew Sago treat. As compared to the other menu, this is cooling and pretty ordinary to me.

For occasions, it will be best to bring visitors or your love one here for a meal. I would very much like to visit the blue hour to view the landscapes of Singapore over dinner.

Bayswater Kitchen Smile Nov 27, 2017

http://www.umakemehungry.com/2017/11/bayswater-kitchen.html

Bayswater Kitchen is a restaurant on Keppel Bay Island by The Prive Group located right by the side of the waterfront at the scenic Marina at Keppel Bay. It does have a relaxing and laidback atmosphere inspired by the seaside.

Bayswater Kitchen

The decor and furnishing of Bayswater Kitchen is bright and breezy themed with nautical accents. With the alfresco dining section, the place is rather popular in the evenings as you can enjoy a good view of Keppel Marina.

Let alone with good seafood, it would be best to pair with alcohol.

In fact the fisherman's feast is recommended by the restaurant as Seafood Lovers "Wet" Dream.

Their menu is dated with a stamp and that suggested that items on it are subjected to change base on season and what is available in the kitchen.

To start, we had the Chargrilled Octopus. It was smoky and grilled to perfect tenderness. The dish was awesome with smoked roe, Gremolata, Borlotti Beans.

The Fisherman's Feast was a scrumptious meal for us. Their homemade hand-rolled linguine was commendable as it was lightly soaked and cooked in their seafood stock. Fisherman feast was not completed without the main ingredients like lobster, prawn, mussel, clams and fish of the season.

Fisherman's Feast - $38 per pax

Fisherman's Feast - $38 per pax

The feast requires a minimum order for 2 pax, that also means you can order similar dish if you are dining in a group and portion will be serve accordingly to per head. Thumbs up to the Fisherman's Feast!

Eyes on the Lobster

Eyes on the Lobster

All were good from food to environment, perhaps a little shortcoming might be the lights in the restaurant which was quite dim, not an ideal environment for taking pictures. Other than that in terms of service, I would comment that they were very "on-the-ball" be it checking on the taste of the food or topping up our glasses of sparkling water.

This place is recommended for a good date and for occasions be it in pairs (couples) or groups. Do remember to make a reservation before heading down.

http://www.umakemehungry.com/2017/11/angus-house.html

I have been walking pass Angus House umpteenth times but never has the chance to step in until just this year. It was a celebration meal for a birthday and finally we had the chance to explore Angus House. Angus House is quite easy to locate as she is on the 4th Level of Takashimaya, next to the Toys / Children Department .

Angus House

I quite like this open concept kitchen part of the restaurant whereby we were able to take a click preview of the chef busying in the kitchen.

Kitchen

Internally is well lited, under the spacious and romantic lights, environment makes it cozy and relaxing. With attentive servers around, I would say that their service is prompt and smiley.

Interior

It is perfect place for a first date. Also, it is recommended to make reservation and secure a seat.
On the Table

On the Table

We were there for steak but to make it a meal with appetizer, soup, salad, bread and dessert, we topped up $15 each and find it quite worthy.

Bread & Butter

Appetizer was a big piece of salmon with flaky bread stick and sweet sauce.

Reminds of my Mos Burger Style of Salad and immediately I know they are common as its Japanese! Greens was crunchy with cherry tomato, Japanese cucumber, corn kernels, cabbages and dressed with roasted sesame sauce.

Salad We had the escargot as our sides. Well baked with herbs and butter, served sizzling hot. I'm not really a fan of these shells but I think the style of preparation were rather fragrant.

You can still hear the sizzling and bubbling effect of butter together with escargot when they serve to the table.

Environment was quite cold and just right with a warm bowl of calm chowder.

This is not the usual Western Style Steak I had. In case you are not aware, Angus House is mainly serving Japanese Style Beef Steak as well as pasta and the type of serving may not be what you have on mind if you are thinking along Morton's Style.

The 200g Sirloin Steak comes in a sizzling hot plate direct from the kitchen in Medium-Well doneness as requested. A piece of savoury herb butter and slice of lemon was placed on the steak, as the heat rises, the butter melts accordingly. Steak was definitely soft and texture was friendly with the knife.

While the man had a bigger portion of 300g Steak from the Rib Eye at Medium doneness. Similarly, the steak was juicy and tender just like I had my Sirloin.

Desserts have option of Cheese Cake or Tiramisu. Since we are having 2 sets, we opted for both and ended our dinner with sweet endings. Cheese cake came with a very moist biscuit base and was light in taste, not too cloying. I love the Cereal and the dash of raspberry sauce and cream by the side.d

Tiramisu was light and tasty coupled with honey melon, dragonfruit, mint leaf and strawberry. It was real good and in fact I dont mind having another piece if they do offer.

At least I can strike off the To Visit / To Eat from my list after visiting Angus House. The quality of food and service are commendable. I won't hesitate to recommend my friends here if they want to try Japanese Style Beef.
