Soon Kee Wanton Mee OK Apr 26, 2021

Soon Kee Wanton Mee Stall is also one of the popular stalls in Pek Kio Market & Food Center where one notices the queue line up in front of the stall. So what's the fuss? Let's take a look at it.Though the bigger portion was just a $0.50 difference, I find that the portion was rather generous not only for the noodles but also the slices of char siew. The noodles were slightly thicker than the usual Mee Kia I had and was springy. The sauce they use was slightly different from the usual ones we have and indeed, it has a familiar old school taste. Besides that, the Char Siew was home made too. While the Wanton comes in 3 in the soup bowl. The other item on their menu will be their shrimp dumpling noodle instead.Shrimp Dumplings are plump and juicy for instance, however nothing extraordinary about the fillings and taste.Have no idea what to eat in Pek Kio Market & Food Center? Perhaps following the length of the queue from the stall may be a good guide to make a choice of your meal.

https://www.umakemehungry.com/2021/03/hong-kong-street-zhen-ji.html

Weekends are meant for good meals and with the sibling's recommendation, we have agreed to head down to Ang Mo Kio Hong Kong Street Zhen Ji for a Cze Char dinner despite the heavy downpour.

Hong Kong Street Zhen Ji

The dish was a noteworthy item just as recommended on their menu. Cuttlefish given was generous and was soft and chewable while the Sambal was not too spicy together with the cut pieces of Fried Kang Kong.

Fried Kang Kong Sambal with Cuttlefish 鱿鱼蕹菜 - $12
Large chunks of fish meat with slices of ginger and vegetables together with thick bee hoon are the usual sights that we expect from Cze Char's stall Fish Meat Noodle Soup. I was rather disappointed with the soup as it was rather bland without much taste but on a good note, usage of MSG is minimal.

Sum Kee Fish Meat Noodle Soup 珍记鱼肉粗米粉 - $7
The pork ribs are indeed very flavourful with sweetness and sour taste. It was intense and the amount of meat given was generous. It's recommended just as what they state on their menu.

Sum Kee Pork Ribs 珍记排骨王 - $10
"Wok Hei" taste from the "San Lao" Hor Fun was present. This individual serving of Hor Fun had a significant use of fish slices as well as bean sprouts.

Sum Kee "San Lao" Hor Fun 招牌三捞河粉 - $6
It was a tasty and recommended dish on its menu but, to be honest, it's good but not to die for as there are better ones out there.

Fish Slices and Bean Sprouts

The exterior texture of the roll was indeed very thin and crispy, unlike what I had in most Cze Char Stall. As for its fillings, its rather ordinary, pairing up with the sweet sauce provided.

Crispy Prawn Roll 珍记虾枣 - $10
Though the cereal prawn was packed with fragrance and hints of milk powder, we still find that the taste of prawns was kind of lacking and bland.

Cereal Prawn 香脆麦片虾 - $22
The taste from the "star" of the dish was not up to our expectation but instead the cereal that is complimenting the prawns taste better as a whole. Well, I would have skipped this dish.

Close up on Cereal Prawn

With some hits and misses, if I'm going for popular dishes like San Lao Hor Fun, Fish Meat Noodle Soup and Crispy Prawn Roll, I will most likely go to the usual Holland Village XO Fish Head Bee Hun. However, their menu was rather standard and not with a variety like Hong Kong Street. In addition, with so many dishes ordered, we felt that the price was reasonable & pocket friendly for a popular Cze Char place like this. It is definitely a good place for a family meal during the weekends and do note that reservations can be made in advance for big groups only.

Inspirasi Smile Apr 10, 2021

https://www.umakemehungry.com/2021/03/inspirasi.html

Inspirasi is a well known Malay Stall in Bedok Interchange Hawker Center as they have a long history. Look into the queue and the surrounding tables, you will get to see many Maciks and Pakciks. The stall menu has only 4 items, Mee Rebus, Soto Ayam, Mee Soto and chicken Porridge.

We hardly get to have $2.50 per bowl nowadays and in fact, most of the minimum price in a hawker centre is about $3. I had topped up my bowl of Mee Soto with Begedil. The Begedil comes in a round shape size like a fishball and was rather ordinary. However, talking about the Mee Soto, the soup has a very old school taste and to my liking.

Mee Soto - $2.50 with Badgedil $0.50

Even though the portion was $2.50, patrons are not short-changed on the amount of shredded chicken.

We bought another popular item on the menu too, Mee Rebus and topped it up with 2 begedils. The sweet peanut gravy too has a familiar old school taste of childhood and its really comforting.

Comparing the price per item, I would say the food is worth the queue even though its the best I had around. Since my not residing in the East, I would not purposely go back for their dinners but still, its a good experience to know such traditional tastes still exist.

Khun-Yai Thai Food (Bangkok) OK Oct 18, 2020
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Thai | Hawker Centre

Khun-Yai is one of the stalls we always do not have the chance to eat whenever we are in Beauty World Food Center. Most of the time, its either they are sold out or they are already closed.

The stall is managed by a team of 3, comprising of 2 ladies and a guy. The latter is seen mainly as the chef, cooking all the dishes while one of the ladies is managing the orders while the other lady in the kitchen is preparing the ingredients for the chef.

Fluffy egg with crab sticks & sotong as seafood omelette, no "wow" factor but a good taste of home cook food.
Seafood Omelette - $6

The yellow grains of pineapple rice was all ordinary to me until I saw slices of hot dog as part of the ingredient among the mix beans and pineapple chunks. Well, it's not a usual sight and I thought they do have their own style compared to other Thai Cuisine stalls we have in Singapore.
Pineapple Fried Rice - $9

Phad Thai is on a sweet side with hints of scrambled egg taste and as a whole, I'm quite happy with this dish for the prawns were fresh and not those processed ones. The portion was reasonable for the price that we are paying.
Phad Thai - $5

The dish caught my sight as quite some customers ordered this. The Sotong was well battered and deep-fried to its crispy perfection and one thing to ponder about is that it doesn't look greasy.

Dipped them into the given sweet and spicy sauce and its good to go!

The green curry was creamy in its coconut milk and loaded with ingredients like chicken chunks, Thai Brinja, cut chilli and basil leaves. The spiciness level is mild for us
Green Curry (Chicken) - $8

Overall the taste of the food has nothing to shout about. However, if you are looking for a reasonable price Thai home cook food without much expectation, this will not be a bad choice. Base on my encounters, if you are heading down for their food, it will be better you can be earlier as once it gets sold out fast during peak hours.

Choupinette Smile Oct 07, 2020

Hidden away in the Bukit Timah enclave, Choupinette been serving classic French dishes since 2002. When translated from French, "Choupinette" means "Sweetie Pie" in French.

The cafe also doubles up as a bakery where you can see lovely homemade loves displayed in the wooden baskets near the entrance.

It was an impromptu breakfast arrangement on a Saturday morning and we did not make an advance reservation. We approached the cafe as walk-in customers. We were then told that they were fully booked till 11am and they will call us in 20 minutes time if there were empty seats.

The menu items are rather limited and have no illustrations.

The doughnut stick was said to be on the house, the reason being that they have kept us waiting.

The Ema's Set is the basic set among all and only served until noon. This gives us a choice of croissant or pain au chocolate or sultana or small brioche or wholemeal mini-baguette with butter and jam.

All sets on the menu are served with fruit juice and any coffee or hot tea or even hot chocolate. It quite out of the ordinary practise that they offer 2 glasses of drinks in a meal.

The chocolate brioche is a perfect addition to a simple breakfast. The buns are pillowy soft and consist of chocolate.

The set comes with a glass of fruit juice and we have cranberry and lime juice. These are not freshly squeezed juices and most probably some carton juices that can be bought off from the shelves.

The Egg's Benedict's is a definite crowd-pleaser as almost each and every table did have one such similar-looking dish as their order. An a la carte order would have it cost at $19 but we have ordered in as a set and that comes with 2 drinks.

Choupinette has nailed it! The Egg's Benedict was perfectly done and well-executed with hollandaise sauce spread on both poached eggs.
Egg's Benedict's Set - $26

Besides just having eggs on toast with ham and hollandaise sauce, I'm actually quite impressed but how crispy the toast was. The texture was simply as good as munching on some biscuits.

Here comes our 2nd drink, a glass of hot cappuccino and a glass of ice chocolate.

As an overall, service was ordinary and the cafe space is limited and hard to accommodate a large group. It will be advisable to do a reservation prior to going down to avoid disappointment.
