Mikawa Yakitori Bar Smile Sep 27, 2020

I came to know of Mikawa Yakitori Bar when we were discussing about good food in Bukit Timah estate with one of the friends. With the stretch of restaurants along Cheong Chim Nam Road, she highly recommends Mikawa Yakitori Bar. Well, after my first experience from this bar, I'm strongly agreeable with her honest comments.
Mikawa Yakitori Bar

Mikawa Yakitori Bar

Our appetizer comes with the popular Japanese egg roll and we have our Japanese Omelette served not the usual way. The exterior was charred grill and I'm kind of impressed by the sofa wobbly texture as I lend my jaws into the omelette. Awe! It really buys me at their first dish!
Tamagoyaki - $4.90

Tamagoyaki - $4.90

They have a few options for Japanese Stir fried rice. You can choose from Garlic, Salmon, Eel or Pork. We have chosen Unagi portion and every spoonful from the rice was tasty and satisfying. Hints of Wok Hei taste and for the price we are paying, its a go especially when they are not stingy on their Unagi. Bowl of fried rice is soft and every grain was significant in the bowl not sticking into each other.

Yaki Meshi Niniku/Sake/Unagi/ButaNiku - $10.90

Yaki Meshi Niniku/Sake/Unagi/ButaNiku - $10.90

Our Kushiyaki orders was served in a long traditional wooden board. Starting from left to right in the picture, Buta Bara $2.90 is their chef recommendation in which boneless pork belly with Onion makes up the stick while the one besides features Hotate Bacon Maki $3.90 with scallop wrapped inside the bacon. I thought it was quite special as I seldom come across such combination. Next will be a common combination of bacon and asparagus, Asparagus with Bacon Maki $3.20. Sasami (Tare / Mentai / Cheese) $3.20,  Chicken Breast Meat with a choice of sauce, mentai or even cheese. Tsukune (Tare / Mentai)  $3.50 which refers to chicken Meat Ball is part of the recommended items on the menu as well, patrons can has a choice of sauce or mentai over it. Last but not least, the chicken with leek and sauce, Negima (Tare / Shio) $2.90. It does comes with the choice of salt without sauce too.

Another addictive item on the menu will be none other than their grilled pork cheek. Not only was it tender that makes up part of the addiction, the Miso sauce was definitely a perfectly choice to dab those meat onto.

Tontoro Miso Yaki - $12

Here's our additional order as we felt that the food had scored above our expectation. We were kind of a little greedy thinking we should fill up our tummy more with their good food and we ordered their dragon roll. It was make up of fresh with Unagi, cucumber and tempura prawn that was served with a warm bite.

Doragan Roru - $18.00

As a whole,  Mikawa Yakitori Bar has showed us (patrons) that they take pride in its kushiyaki skewers and we are pleasantly surprised with the dining experience. Service wise, they are professional and friendly.

BurgerLabo Smile Jul 21, 2020

BurgerLabo is located at Malan Road within Gillman Barracks. Though the floor area was not big, this bar and dining concepts has large glass windows and are pretty well-lit with natural lighting. The Interior was simply chic and modern. They focus on Burger meals as well as bread rolls with meat and a variety of alcoholic options.

As we did not have prior reservations, it was fully occupied in the interior. We have the exterior seating with mosquito coil burning away to keep them away from us.

There are 3 flavors for a milkshake and we had chosen the plain flavor. It was impressive enough with distinctive vanilla beans in the cup and I don't mind having another cup since its quite small.

We had 15 pieces of Tiger Prawn Keropok for sides. Surprisingly it was light in taste and crispy in texture. It also has a significant prawn taste.

Served in Connecticut- Style, the Grilled American Lobster was tossed with unsalted butter and with the choice of Crème Fraîche or house-made shio kombu mayonnaise.

The meat was then sandwiched in a warm toasted baguette that was baked especially for this. The meal was not plain as it was served with shoestring truffle fries topped with grated Parmesan cheese.

All burger patties were cooked to medium / medium-well standard to ensure food safety. Patties were juicy and tender, topped with red onions pickled in IPA.

These red onions were cooked in Wagyu fats, American cheese, house-made bone marrow 'butter', house-made mustard, and house-made shio kombu mayo-based sauce. We had the basic burger whereby the patties were made up of a blend of Black Angus beef & Toriyama Umami Wagyu A4 patty. They were placed in warm toasted bun baked by Bakery Brera. The Basic Burger comes with 150g or 300g at $18 / $25 respectively.

It was a good experience knowing there is such a well crafted burger around. Price is explained by the quality of the food and it makes sense to pamper ourselves once a while. If you are looking for yummy burger and around the corner, you should give BurgerLabo a try.

The Nautical Theme Cafe and Bar has been attention catching whenever I passes by. It is located in  the building of King Albert's Park Residences Mall. This establishment is done up by a popular yacht Charter in Singapore - Eagle Wings.

Its quite surprising that the Cafe has constant flow of crowd despite being located in the quiet mall with a handful of shop spaces still untenanted.

Interior features a cozy and relaxing environment in its charming Nautical Theme Decor, switching us to holiday mood.

The Menu is rather extensive with Asian as well as Western choices ranging from Salad, burgers, pasta to Singapore Famous Fish Soup and Indonesian Fried Rice Paradise.

The Rich Lobster Bisque is the Captain's choice aka recommended dishes. Its not your usual bisque packed strong of crustacean taste but the savoury broth is creamy and comes with chunks of poached lobster meat. It is also served with a slice of buttered bread.

This reminds me of our local Singer-Song writer, Dick Lee, for Fried Rice Paradise. The fried rice is not the usual ordinary plain rice with egg but added with Crab Meat. It was served with delicious chicken Wing, Chicken Satay with peanut sauce, fried egg with crispy salted egg fish skins on the side. This dish requires at least 15 minutes of preparation time as indicated  in the menu.

Thumbs up for this Chef's Specialty Cream Sauce Tossed with Sauteed Bacon and Egg Yolk.
The dish is welll executed and if you love cream base pasta, do give it a try!

A fusion of Asian taste into the Western Dish. The sweet sour marinated chicken chop was served with hearty roasted red capsicum, broccoli salad with the choice of shoestrings fries or rice.

Their mixed batter consist of brown butter waffle mixed with Charcoal waffle. Texture of waffle was fluffy and not too bad. Its pretty plain but good to pair up with the sweet scoops of Gelato we ordered.

Dishes served tasted above average as compared to most Cafe in Singapore. Service was sincere and friendly. I will recommend it to anyone who wishes to enjoy Cafe food in such a lovely ambiance. Private Dining is also available at second floor with Karaoke System and big screen projectors.

http://www.umakemehungry.com/2019/09/fu-zhou-poh-hwa-oyster-cake.html

We have observed the craze of Fried Oysters Cake in recent Food Fairs and Pasar Malam of the neighbourhood. There will be a snaky long queue in front of the stall without fail everytime we pass by. Well, these traditional and brilliantly good oysters pancakes are rare of its kind as not many places are selling it.

The traditional fried Fu Zhou Oyster Cake comes in a sphere size like an UFO, making up of  ingredients like flour, spring onion, peanuts, anchovies, minced meat, oysters, prawn and Chinese parsley. Each is sold at $2 for the original flavour and if you want additional filling, it will be $2.50.

I'm so excited!

I'm so excited!

Best eaten when its piping hot with its crispy thin golden brown crust enveloping the generous ingredients. The aroma whet our appetite for more with every mouthful bursting full of flavours and riots of texture ~ crispy from its fried batter, crunchiness from the anchovies and peanuts and not forgetting the juiciness from the fresh plump oysters. What surprised me was that these traditional cakes were not that overly oily.

Delicious!

Fuel Plus Smile Nov 22, 2019

If you heard of Refuel Cafe which is popular in the East sides, you will probably know that they have opened another cafe in Telok Blangah area located at the foot of Mount Faber.

Fuel Plus

Interior has thrown a show case of  Scandinavian inspired decor. The environment is bright and gives a comfortable feel to diner. If you notice the pipeline decoration on the wall, you will figure out that they are spelling out "Fuel Plus".

We ordered some bites while waiting for the mains and we were glad that we did as it took quite sometime for the food to come. Cheesy tortilla nibbles were not a bad choice and served with BBQ pulled pork topped with refreshing salsa, jalapeno and their homemade sauce.

While presentation is a plus point here, we also get to taste a different style of enjoying a glass of Ice Latte. Instead of having milk with espresso topped with ice. They did a reverse engineer way by having Espresso Freeze into cubes and served it with a glass of milk.

Fuel Ice Tea is surprisingly refreshing. Sweetness level was just right and pack full of citrus flavours. You get to taste the real strawberry fruits, kaffir lime and mint flavours in this drink. Definitely a boost to your vitamin C for the day!

The slow baked tender pork ribs were tantalizing! It comes with thai inspired mixed salad that contains rocket leaves, cauliflower, strawberries and even slice of fried lotus root. Yum! Taste and tenderness were definitely great and comparable to those cafe that specialized in BBQ Ribs. However, one thing that can improve on maybe perhaps the serving time. It was served cold and we preferred to have it at least warm.

It was the dish I looked forward to the most before travelling down. I was tad disappointed as it was served with egg fettucini instead. Nonetheless, the quality of the food was above expectation. Tender chunks of beef was a spot on. The slow cooked beef in rich hereby tomato sauce was generous and every part of the pasta was well coated in sauce.

Beef Ragu - $18

Overall, food has been slightly above expectation and by looking at other tables orders, i'm kind of convinced that we have to make additional trip back to try other interesting bites, desserts as well as the Mains. Serving timing for the mains may take a while but good food comes to those who wait. Ha Ha Ha.
