Calling all vegetarians! Here's another Korean option for you. If you heard of The Boneless Kitchen and love what they are serving, you will be glad that the people behind Daehwa are the same.

Before we begin our gastronomic korean vegetarian dinner, we learnt that their food is free of MSG and free of five alliums. As a non vegetarian, I'm quite concern being real thirsty after some vegetarian meals and I'm glad that they are taking care of it.

Just like any other Korean Restaurant, these side dishes given are refillable.

For those who love Korean Cuisine will be familiar with the Army Stew or Budae Jjigae. This comforting stew is definitely one of the popular hot pot dishes in Korea. Suitable for 2 to 4 pax and comes with 2 bowls of rice.

Army Jeongol 부대찌개- $42

With a balance of spiciness, saltiness and slight sweetness. Being a vegetarian dish, you still get to see luncheon meat and hotdog in the stew but its mocked meat. Other ingredients include cucumber, tofu, noodles, mushrooms, rice cake etc. The initial spicy taste was not very distinct till the broth was refilled at a later stage.

Woot! I love this classic savory dish. The sweet potato noodles is paired with mushrooms and asparagus topped with coriander and sesame seeds. It was flavorful and texture was chewy and springy. Recommended!

Japchae 잡채 - $15

Japchae 잡채 - $15

It's not the typical starchy kind of Kimchi Pancake. Tasty when paired with the sauce. However, the circumference of the pancake was charred and hardened, not to my liking, otherwise overall is good.

Kimchi Jeon 김치전- $8

Kimchi Jeon 김치전- $8

Also known as the squid rings. Wow! This dish swept my feet off. It's meatless yet taste like one. Don't do without the bean paste that comes along with it.
Ojingo Ring 오징어 - $6

Ojingo Ring 오징어 - $6

The sinful cheesy bowl of French Fries with Truffle. Definitely worth the sharing the calories as the portion is big. Needless to say, they are generously tossed with grated cheese, mayonnaise and fragrantly served. Bet you cannot stop at just one mouthful.

Cheese Truffle Gamja Twigim 트뤼플치즈감자튀김 - $12

For those who love Boneless Kitchen and do not want to travel into the Eastern part of Singapore, Daehwa will be a very good Korean vegetarian alternative for those who reside in the West.

Ah Kow Mushroom Minced Pork Mee Smile Jul 23, 2018

If you love BCM (Bah Chor Mee) you would have probably heard of Ah Kow Mushroom Minced Pork Mee which was previously located in Hong Lim food Center. The stall has been around since 1945, passing recipe from the original owner to his sons.

Everytime, without fail, I will get to Ah Kow's Die Hard Supporters adding to its long snaking queues. What's so great about the bowls of noodle, let's check it out.

Stall Front

Stall Front

Our frequent order from the stall will be Bee Tai Mak Dry in its smallest available portion at $4 per bowl. For those who prefer more vinegar in their minced meat noodle will definitely appreciate the "uncontrolled" use of black vinegar in their noodles.

Noodles were springy and complemented well with the sauce. Ingredients were generous in its thick cut braised mushrooms, handful of minced meat and noodles stand up with its fragrant fried sole fish.

Minced Meat Noodle (Dry) - $6 (Big)

Overall, Ah Kow's noodle is some food that we will return for its taste and generous portion.

Apart from food, I notice that the stall owner has passion in running the business. On several occasions, I noticed that his white shirt was totally drenched either in his sweat or most probably from the steaming vapour of his soup, but such thing has never stop him from serving out more delicious bowls of Minced Meat Noodle!

Thai Boat Noodle Smile Jul 11, 2018

Categories : Thai | Restaurant

http://www.umakemehungry.com/2018/07/thai-boat-noodle.html

Visiting the old school building, Beauty World, it is less likely you will skip this Thai Boat Noodle Shop that is tuck at the corner of the 1st Floor. Food menu from Thai Boat Noodle is pretty extensive with the usual Thai Snacks and common beverages.

Unit Front

Unit Front

Both the Lemon and Milk Tea are pretty satisfying.

Thai Ice Lemon Tea & Thai Ice Tea - $2.50 Each

The presentation looks like what I had in Bangkok in somewhere near victory Monument. The soup that comes along with the boat noodle is rich and in dark brown color, totally identical to what I had. Not only that, it was tasty and I am so please with the meat ball too.

Boat Noodle Pork - $5

While for the Beef Boat Noodle, the texture of meat is similar to what we have in the Pork Boat Noodles. They are tender and tasty.

Boat Noodle Beef

I find that this is the closest Thai Boat Noodle I ever had in Singapore that has the taste of what I'm looking for. Service wise, they are friendly and most of the staff in kitchen are Thai workers thus the quality and authenticity of taste are for sure verified. Now that we need not fly direct to Bangkok for a bowl of Thai Boat Noodle, just head down to Beauty World and it will definitely fix your craving.

Kotobuki Smile Jun 06, 2018

Categories : Japanese | Sushi/Sashimi

For more details visit https://www.umakemehungry.com/2018/06/kotobuki.html

Kotobuki has been around since decades despite being located in an old school building in somewhere quite inaccessible. While translated from Japanese, Kotobuki means Longevity and perhaps so, this restaurant has been living up to her name. I could not remember when was the first time that I have visited their first restaurant which is this in Jurong. Till now, it still remains a very popular dining place with 8 private dining rooms and have approximately of seating capacity of 100 pax. An hour hour of dining there with our observations, you will realize that the number of Japanese expats patronizing the place.

Interior furnishing was something that left me a great impression and perhaps the reason for my return now. They have a woody old Japanese style furnishing and environment is cosy. Apart from that, they are airing Japanese Channel on the TV too.

For dinner, enjoy the Happy Hour at 20% discount from 5.30pm to 7pm.

For drinks, the green tea is refillable and I pretty enjoy their service with Green Tea promptly refill by their attentive staff.

Yuzu Soda - $6 & Green Tea

Set comes with appetizer of the day (which is potato salad), fruits, miso soup and rice with each item occupying one corner of the tray. With the main dish placed in the center of the tray with shreded cabbages and tomatoes as sides, as a whole, i find that its appetizing. Ginger sauce were evenly coated on eat piece of pork in the "just right" portion. Each piece of meat is generously served in its rights thickness and do not worry, you do not have to bite on any tough meat as they are quite easy to chew on.

Pork Ginger Set - $16

Presentation was the same for the Teriyaki Set. Main dish was wonderfully created with charred grilled edges on the teriyaki chicken thigh. Chicken Teriyaki Sauce was given sparingly however, the dish was made perfect with dab on the Mayonnaise.

Chicken Teriyaki - $18

It will be good to enjoy such meals once a while as they are unique from the mainstream dishes that
the chain restaurants are offering. Price may be a little bit steeper than the usual ones but I would say it is value worth for money.
