La Petite Cuisine Smile Jul 14, 2016

http://www.umakemehungry.com/2016/06/la-petite-cuisine.html

La Petite Cuisine serves a decent French Cuisine, authentic and unpretentious. They are humbly situated in one of the old school malls in Bukit Timah Area and are known for its affordability and quality.

By chance, we were there on one of the weekday nights and decided to give it a try since we have pass by the place so many times and the crowd in the restaurant was rather convincing.

Furnishing was not really modern but still presentable in its own style. They have black board mounted on to the "bricks-lookalike" tiles indicating the specials serving of the day.

Without looking much into their ala carte menu, we decided on the Weekday Set dinner at $24 which we thought was pocket friendly as there is no GST and service charge. Plain water are self-service and are reachable from the drinks counter. The dinner set is rather straight forward with 2 choices of appetizer, mains and desserts each.

Getting the best of both worlds we order 2 sets and tried everything for the set dinner during that day.

My first try of Orange Carrot Soup was pleasing, it tasted sweet more than of a citrus taste that I would have expected. They were served tongue burning hot and goes indeed well dipping the mini baguettes.

The stomach comforting Ravioli of spinach among the light creamy sauce was a good reminisce of my France trip. The straight forward dish without much fanciful creations in the dish is somehow what I'm looking for. Decent and down to earth.

One of the set was served with rice, spinach and Salmon Filet in cream sauce. Cream sauce is light and taste is identical to what was being used in the Ravioli dish. Salmon was cooked perfectly with crispy skin and pinkish on the inside.

Salmon Filet Pan-Fried Served with Baby Spinach & Creme Sauce
Comparing this main course to the salmon, I would have prefer this dish more. The steak was chewy and tender. The mushroom sauce reveals some hints of wine in it gave a perfect match to the Sirlion Steak. The stomach fillers in the dish will be the potato grains.

The wobbly panna cotta as our desserts was a sweet ending to the meal. I don't have a sweet tooth, thus the caramelized top layer isn't really for me.

Overall, La Petite Cuisine is a commendable place and for sure I will recommend to my friends who wants to have some authentic french cuisine without breaking the pocket.

The RawR Kitchen Smile Jul 14, 2016

More reviews on http://www.umakemehungry.com/2016/07/the-rawr-kitchen-invited-tasting.html

The RawR Kitchen is somewhere I would have never imagine that I would have visited since its located in the Industrial area of Bukit Batok and in an obscure part of the building in The Splendour. However, once you have found this place, you will be glad that you have discovered it as it is a good place to meet or even chill up after a hard day's of work.

Furnishing are simple and I am amazed by the restricted area that contained huge tanks of beer. The area fenced up and only authorized personnel are able to access with the use of biometric security system.

I like the part where they did their local craft beer and with funny beer signages around.

This portion of the cafe was rather interesting as it has different kinds of taps stating kinds of beer available in The RawR Kitchen.

Let's explore the food dishes by the Kitchen...

It's not your usual kind of Bolognese with tomato sauce all over. The way they prepared was authentic and delicious! I was impressed by the way how minced meat was generously spread in the Al Dente pasta and topped with shredded cheese. And a little background from the kitchen: the meat was stewed for 5 hours and if you step into a cafe in Italy, this will be the exact same taste.

While enjoying our dishes whipped up from the kitchen, some of the dish is good for pairing up with certain type of beer. I was totally stunned when I saw them filling up the chilled mug with beer from the taps. Aren't those tap for show only?

Perhaps we should put our mouth there instead.
We had a first try on the Wheat Beer, it was light tasting. Our second try is the root beer, yes this is not your usual kind of A&W root beer, it is sweet with about 3% of alcohol content and tasted with hints of the softdrink. Well, this is the preferred drink by the lady.

Our 3rd drink will be apple cider that has a mixture of red and green apple. Taste is mixed too, a little bit of sour and sweetness with alcohol content at about 3.5%.

Ah! My comment as someone who did not touch beer so frequently. Brown Ale did taste like a cup of Hojicha to me! Bitter and containing 6-7% alcohol.

Pilsner, to me is "sugarless tea", kind of reminds me of "Pokka Ayataka" and somehow similar to the Wheat Beer.

Dunkel is rather common to me and its closer to stout and of course heavier than Pilsner. This is best to go with the molten wings if you are ordering some.

IPA which also known as the India Pale Ale is intense and spicy. It kinds of clear cut, either you like it or you hate it.

Stout containing about 8.8% is known for its "coffee flavour".

Not taking alcohol, you can choose to have some plain water.

However, if you prefer hot beverage, do not worry, as you still can enjoy a cup of cappuccino with latte art .

While everyone was busying socializing, we had a look over into the kitchen and saw the butter corn kernels went through the raving flames. Guess what dish are they preparing for?

The New Zealand Air-flown Sirloin steak was delicious! Rubbing with just simple salt and black pepper, it goes good in its grilled medium rare form. Dish is served with flamed corn kernels and sprinkled with herbs. However, the picture shown is not a complete version of the Striploin Steak at $16 as the actual one will be served with Flame Grilled corn cob, mash and mixed veggies.

While the stomachs were still groaning after the dishes, we turned our heads around to check out the next dish in the kitchem... Guess what is this lady doing?

While Salted Egg dishes are in the trend, its hard to leave such dish out in the menu. The hand-made creamy salted egg sauce brought a little bit spice to the wings.

Salted Egg Wings (3 Pics) - $8

Wondering what's the helper up to at the kitchen island? She preparing us for a challenge!

I gave up eating this after licking its sauce on my fingers! Can you imagine how spicy it is? WARNING! This dish is definitely not for the weak - like me.

Molten Wings (3Pcs) - $8

Tears immediately welled up a few seconds after I tasted the sauce. It was a terrible experience and in fact most of us could not take that level of spiciness. Luckily we took some sugar as a remedy to let the spice subside.

Deep fried and originally dressed withing any sauce. Comparing to the 2 others wings, I preferred this special recipe of such golden fried wings.

Original Rawk Wings (3pcs) - $7

Beware of burning tongues. These are really good stuff!

If you want to quiet down after a day's of work and enjoy some local craft beer, look no more, visit The RawR Kitchen and you will be surprised by the amount of F&B outlets had increased among the industrial estates over the years.

Three Little Pigs Smile Jul 14, 2016

More reviews here http://www.umakemehungry.com/2016/07/three-little-pigs.html

The restaurant name is named after Three Little Pigs, a popular childhood story among us. After the recent renovation of the mall, there are many new shops and eateries around and Three Little Pigs are is of them. They are specialized in mainly pork of course.

Environment was rather causal and I like about its spacious environment with simple decors in the surrounding. In fact, I was attracted by the whiff of the pork chop as i passed by its corridor.

Being the recommended item on the menu, the forest mushroom soup was light and filled with chunky bits of mushroom. It might contained the taste of mushroom but the soup contain was light and watery but not till the extend of having bland taste. Perhaps cream had been used sparingly here.

Forest Mushroom Soup - $5.80

Let's us take the role of big bad wolf but of course we are not going to huff and puff and blow the house down to eat them.

Cheesy Pork Fries was served in a aluminium round tin with grease paper. Simply love the thin slices of pan fried pork that topped the golden fries and with a bit of sour cream on them makes this appetizer went addictive.

Cheesy Pork Fries - $7.80

Signature dish came with the used of pearl rice, Goma Japanese leek and the combination of sunny side up egg with the aromatic sliced of pork chop. You will be surprised that Pork Chop was done by so well that its marinate permeates, such that they are tasty enough to be eaten without any other additional sauce.

Signature Pork Chop Rice - $10.80

Pork Chop is good alone enough without sauce!
Pork Chop of the dish is the cream of the crop, tender slab that gave surprises to the taste buds. Every pork chops are hand pounded with home spice marinated. If you like the famous Pork Chop Burger in Macau, most probably you will get hook onto their pork chop. Interestingly. The dish is served with house greens dressed in roasted sesame sauce and if you are not really into the rice dishes, this is good alternative as you get Macaroni Soup here.

Signature Pork Chop Macaroni Soup - $11.80

Over experience was present and price was relatively within the average fare. This will be a recommendation to my friend who love pork chops!

Hambaobao Smile Jun 06, 2016

An interesting name given to a stall that reminds me of the childhood days whereby the word "HamBaoBao" when translated from Mandarin literally refers to Hamburger. I guess during my era, any kid will be very happy to hear about this word.

I was in fact looking forward to the Ayam Buah Keluak Burger but just too bad that it was sold out during the time of vist and we was given a keychain to wait for our food.

Be prepared to wait a little longer if you are ordering the crispy Pork Belly burger as the pork belly will be cooked base on order basis. The pork belly was well marinated and was definitely tasty in its crispy skin layer. Mustard was added to the pork belly to give a spicy kick while the refreshing cool slices of cucumber strike a good balance to burger. Another highlight was its fluffy light butter grilled burger buns which was deliciously good.
Crispy Pork Belly - $5

The Classic Beef burger was not too bad either with beef patty, cheese, homemade tomato sauce, pickles as well as lettuce. Buns were similar prepared with butter just like any other burgers in the menu,

It was good to see young local faces in the hawkers nowadays taking up the challenge working longer hours. Food is rather comforting with innovations of creating burger out of the ordinary and price wise, I would consider pocket friendly.

Fred not if you are caught in the queue and need to ease your hunger quick, there are few other stalls like Top 1 Homemade Noodle, Penang Home Made Beef Ball, Feng Ji Shu Shi Char Kway Teow that you might not want to miss out.

Spending per head: Approximately $5(Dinner)

Balmoral Bakery Smile May 24, 2016

Categories : Bakery

Balmoral Bakery is one of the old school bakeries that we look upon to as every visit here bring us good flashbacks to our younger times when having such simple stuff on earth makes our day. In the current environment that we are in, it is less often that we will come across such down to earth design of the cakes.

With many bakeries keeping up with the modern equipment and modern look in their shop, this facade of the Balmoral bakery remains humble with red bricks by the side of the walls. Walking into the shop is like a walking back into the past with the time machine.

Made up of Multi layers crispy "biscuits" with the top as chocolate and icing. In its buttery fragrance and the flaky thin layers, one tends to get addicted over it.

The nostalgic feeling when you saw the blueberry puree topped the cake with a cream layer in between. To be frank, I was never a fan of blueberry cake when I was young as many of my birthday cakes were all covered with similar blueberries. However, it brought back a lot of good memories with cake having a old school taste!

The traditional flavour that I love most is perhaps this Swiss roll that topped with peanut chunks and sugar. I always find this special somehow as compared to the usual Swiss Rolls cradling the creams.

There are quite a few flavours of Swiss Roll to choose from like Pandan, Vanilla and Chocolate. These little Swiss Rolls were being shrink wrapped and placed in the chiller to maintain the moist. We had the most basic flavour of all.

Besides selling cakes, they have pastries like Beef and chicken pie. I will be back again for other items.
