Brunch Here! Smile Aug 23, 2016

Visit http://www.umakemehungry.com/2016/08/crown-bakery-cafe.html for full review

Our gathering was planned at Evans Lodge but we ended up in Crown Bakery instead due to unforeseen circumstances that the place we initially thought was still operating was no where in our sight. Crown Bakery is located in an old school building, Crown Plaza which is about 8 minutes walk from Botanic Garden. I like the contrast between this modern looking bakery and the rundown building.

Crown Bakery & Cafe
Interior of the bakery looks modern and just by one look at its facade, you can tell that they are selling artisan breads.

Crown Bakery Interior
Coming here for Brunch, Crown recommends the Crown Breakfast. The price might seem abit step for a brunch but portion is good for 2 pax. Look at the centre of the wooden board! The Crown Puff Pastry was the total scene stealer. They recommend to break the edge of the pastry and dip it into the sunny side up's egg yolk! Served along with the centrepiece crown pastry are, red wine-braised oxtail, chicken cheese sausage, Canadian back bacon, sauteed mushrooms, baked tomato & mesclun salad as its side.

Crown Breakfast - $29

Since the Crown is for the King, why not try a dish for the queen, the Eggs Benedict. Though the poached egg might be slightly overcooked, I'm still in love with the combination where poached eggs were served with shaved honey baked ham, both sitting on the Crown's fluffy Sourdough English Muffin, coupled with Hollandaise sauce and mesclun Salad as its side. You can choose to have sourdough muffin or multigrain but the former is definitely recommended.

The Queen's Eggs Ben - $15

We had something new from the menu and that would be their Steak Sandwich serving with Mesclun Salad as their side too. Ciabatta was Crown's handcrafted and toasted. What I like best was its mouth watering sirloin steak grilled to medium well perfection, stacked with layers of lettuce, tomatoes and drizzled with onion marmalade and topped with gherkin. Recommended!

Steak Sandwich - $18

What a satisfying branch I had! Having visiting Crown Bakery randomly, its definitely worth going back once more for their branch and sandwiches.

The Handburger OK Jul 25, 2016

Categories : Multi-Cuisine | Restaurant | Vegetarian | Chinese Soup | Western Soup | Halal

http://www.umakemehungry.com/2016/07/the-handburger.html

The Handburger is one of the stalls under the concept of Soup Spoon Union located in Raffles City Shopping Centre. The concept is not the usual "Order and Pay later" system in most restaurants, instead they did it the reverse with ordering and payment at the same counter.

Once your order is ready, the buzzer will set off and you have to collect your food at the respective counters.

The Handburger practices the healthy living where by the handcrafted burgers includes grilled 100% grass-fed prime beef patties and portobello mushroom sandwiched in wholewheat brioche buns.

I had The Works containing cheese, mushroom, sunny side up egg, juicy thick cuts of tomatoes, handpicked butterhead lettuce and 100% grass-fed prime beef patty grilled to perfection. Making them a meal gives me an option of drink and choice of sides.

The Works - $15.90 / Set

If you knows about Soup Spoon and had tried their soups, this Velvety Mushroom Straganoff should be of no stranger to you. Its stomach filling hot chunky mushroom soups is tastily great item to pair with the meal.

The choice of drink was pretty interesting. Besides having the home brewed Iced Lemon tea, we have the Hibiscus and Sugar-Free Sakura Sencha.

The healthy combination of chicken breast, portobello, cheese and honey mustard for the burger. Though the mushroom looked abit on the dry side, the overall taste was just not too bad.

Another interesting item on the menu will be the Union Sampler that gives diner a petite caesar salad and two petitie mains - a soup and slider. The items was served on a wooden serving board that was tailored make to put both the plate and bowl into the sunken slot.

Union Sampler - $12.50

The original Slider was bite size, perhaps a few bites and you could have done with the burger. It consist of beef, cheese, grilled onions and honey mustard.

Fresh greens with bacon bits, dried cranberries and croutons and vegetables were dressed lightly in its cream sauce.

Overall, I like the concept as more choice are available apart from the usual Soup Spoon, however in terms of quality and standards, its quite of an average fare.

http://www.umakemehungry.com/2016/07/seng-kee-black-chicken-herbal-soup.html

Popping by the East Side of Singapore and we got ourselves dinner at Seng Kee Black Chicken Herbal Soup. It has been a while since I visited them a few years back and I was surprised by how much they have expanded from just a stall front to a few in the same place.

Seng Kee Black Chicken Herbal Soup
Queue was unavoidable during peak period and to be honest parking around the vicinity is not an easy task though Free Parking is available.

Orders were quick to serve, although the soup may looked watery with spring and fried onions. The consistency of herbal taste is good. Rather, it was addictive and I would say there is a good "depth" in the soup.

Texture of Mee Sua was just right and was not too lumpy. I had totally enjoyed the simple tastes through the bowl of soup in mix pork.

Portion was reasonable and lean meat was tender. Kidneys had been well handled leaving no trace of foul smell and what I like best was those thinly sliced livers that was not overly hard to bite on.

Besides being famous for its kidney Mee Sua, they are quite famous for their Cze Char too.

Stirred Fried Vegetables with Garlic
Prawn paste chicken was notable, at least alot better than my last round of prawn paste chicken else where. Exterior was very crispy and at the same time also burning hot as they were just taken out of the oil pot. Just alone without the lime and belachan, they were good enough.

The settings of the eating place make me feel like dining in Malaysia although the currency conversation rate can't really match the comparison. Overall, such specialty is rather unique in Singapore and they had maintained a reputable name throughout the years.

Kim Keat Hokkien Mee OK Jul 19, 2016

http://www.umakemehungry.com/2016/07/kim-keat-hokkien-mee.html

My long overdue "To Eat List" has been revived and YES I managed to visit this Claypot Hokkien Mee in Toa Payoh that went abit viral on the social media last year due to its inspiring stories behind.

After ordering your desired portion (you can order with or without claypot), you can have your buffet of lime and chilli at the table right in front of the stall. The chilli is not overly spicy but it goes well with the noodles.

Luckily, the wait was not that long and our pot of food came within 10 minutes of ordering. The hit of aroma and sizzling sound from the claypot draw our full attention as soon as it was on the table. That was the first time I ever had Hokkien Mee from an earthen claypot.

We had the $10 portion which I think was good for 2-3 pax. Besides being served in a claypot, they gave a different feel from the mainstream hokkien mee as you can see significance differences in the ingredients.

Claypot Hokkien Mee - $10

A good few pieces of tasty "Sio Bak" (Roasted Pork Belly) had been given and apparently, you get to see "La La" in it, which is not common other than the usual prawns, squid, pork belly, pork lards and eggs.

Crispy dark brown pork belly was delicious! It might be a little salty but it taste good alone with its crackling skin.

As a whole in terms of Hokkien Mee, it does have its consistency but still lacking of a good strong stock punch that will actually lift the dish up. Noodles was wet enough, wasn't the dry version that I have read. Personally, I was kind of disappointed about taste but still its a good to know about such dish with tasty pork belly exists.

K.Cook Korean BBQ Buffet OK Jul 19, 2016
Categories : Korean | Restaurant | Buffet | Korean BBQ

http://www.umakemehungry.com/2016/06/kcook-korean-bbq-buffet.html

Despite having the negative thought of smelling like a walking korean BBQ after every BBQ meal, I manage to get myself seated down at the Korean BBQ Buffet, K Cook in Westgate. Ever since its opening in Orchard 2014, K Cook has been regarded as one of the top 10 Korean BBQ place.

K Cook Korean BBQ & Steamboat
Living in the West for a few decades, there isn't much Korean BBQ options that we can choose from. In fact this opening is something that Westies can rejoice in since it is opened at the heart of Jurong East. Like the usual Korean BBQ places, they are installed with hanging vacuums to withdraw the smoke into the exhaust.

K Cook on the other hand had introduced a new concept of marrying Korean BBQ with Steamboat in the Westgate outlet, thus diners can enjoy the best of both worlds, having barbecued meat as well as steamboat session. Wouldn't it be nice?

Though limited, K Cook Buffet spread are considerably decent, dividing into sections, raw meats, vegetables, garnishing, soup, drinks and cook food.

Cook food was constantly kept warm in the skillet with electric stove below. Japchae, their glass noodles alone was rather salty in my opinion and was not to my liking.

As for the meat balls which contains both pork and beef with gravy drenched all over, they were soft in bites and not too bad. Pretty good stuff to fill your hungry stomach first while waiting for the raw to be cooked.

Here comes the Korean Staples, drumlets and wings. With honey coated, they are rather stickily dressed in their golden brown fried wings. This kind of reminds me of 4 Fingers, NeNe Chicken, the kind of Korean Fast Food up in the malls nowadays.

With another common item from the korean cuisine, they have the candied korean sweet potatoes with sesame seeds.

Another thing korean from their cook food section is perhaps none other than the Kimchi and Green onions pancake that was cut into bite sizes for the patron. Grab some and try!

Moving into the meat section, you get beef, chicken and pork in marinated as well as non marinated form. Seafood such as prawns and sotongs were part of the chilled meat too. They are regularly top up by the staff on duty and fresh.

With Steamboat and BBQ, sometimes the preparation can be a little confused here, why not put some into the BBQ hotplate and some into the steamboat soup for boiling? And if you like Bossam as much as I do, try wrapping the BBQ meat with lettuce added with some dakoritang, spicy bean sauce, garlic, onion as well as kimchi.

Marinated and non-marinated meat
While some may want to make their own Budae Jigae (Army Stew), they provide hotdogs, instant noodles, luncheon meat too.

Too bad for the big eaters, there are time limitation of 2 hours, you have to finish your feast within this period.

Other than that, as an overall, staff are prompt in clearing emptied and dirty plates with a smile. Ambience was clean and neat with korean songs playing in the background from the TVs.
