Kok Sen Coffeeshop / Restaurant Smile Sep 17, 2018

https://www.umakemehungry.com/2018/09/kok-sen-coffeeshop-restaurant.html

Talking about quality Cze Char, there is always a queue outside Kok Sen Coffeeshop. They have been serving the usual Cze Char Dishes for about 50 years serving good dishes to family. They are one of those who have been listed under the Michelin Guide months ago.

If you are tourist and going to Kok Sen, be prepared that this is not a upscale Chinese restaurant but a typical Singapore Coffee Shop place. In the event that the restaurant may be full, you might be asked to dine in the backlane, just beside a small road.

If you have looked through the Menu, there were quite a number of noodles dishes with big prawns under the recommendation. However, we decided to go for plain bowls of rice at $0.70 per bowl to pair with our Cze Char Dishes.

One of the recommended dishes will be the Claypot Yong Tau Foo. It tasted special to me with special gravy and stuffing in the Yong Tau Foo. Stuffing consist of meat and seafood which stands out from the mainstream ones from YTF Stall and these married well with the sweet addictive gravy.

Claypot Yong Tau Foo 巧手三宝煲 - $15 (Small)

Sweet and Sour Pork was better than the average but not the best we had eaten. The general taste of sweet sourness was there and the meat of the pork was significant when we bite down the meat unlike some other places, we were short changed by replacing more fats that meat in the dish.

Sweet & Sour Pork 酸甜咕酪肉 - $13 (Small)

When asked what to order, their staff recommended us to their Sambal Deep Fried Fish Tail. It was the expensive of all our dishes ordered but we had no regrets ordering this for its taste was outstanding and more than our expectations.

Sambal Deep Fried Fish Tail 叁巴油鱼尾 - $53 (Market Price)

The deep fried fish was fragrant. The spiciness neutralized with the sweetness of the fish tail and together with the thickness of the flesh, I would say the dish was very well executed. Besides Chilli, this Sambal dish was elevated with onions and even cut of pineapples.

They accept reservation for at least 6 pax. Though it is an old school Coffeeshop place, I am quite impressed by their efficiency in serving food. Not only that, prices are friendly if compared to the quality of food.

Joo Siah Bak Koot Teh Smile Sep 06, 2018

If you are talking about Jurong East Yuhua Hawker Centre Food, Joo Siah Bak Kooth Teh is no stranger to anyone who stay around the vicinity. In 2015, they were relocated from the 2 stalls of the Hawker Center to a near by coffee shop which is just a stone throw away.

The soup base is a Teochew Classic Style of White Pepper Style. Despite being a Teochew, I'm not a fan of peppery Bak Kut Teh but I would say that Joo Siah Bak Koot Teh is not overly peppery. Its soup has a good depth and slight pepper.

We were given the choice to mix sides dishes. Preserved Vegetables strike a good balance of saltiness and sweetness without being too oily. Tau Ki too.

Too bad the main item (Pork Ribs) that we wanted to order has sold out. Order the innards as they are all cleanly prepared and not overcook. Soup is refillable with request from them.

Fen Chang - $5.50 , You Tiao - $1, Lean Meat - $5.50

Even the meat is tender and generous portions were given in the bowl.

As compared to their former location in Hawker Centre, I find that the current location is better as it is not so stuffy. There are alot of chain outlets BKT in the west especially in malls. However if you are looking for quality and a more economical BKT, you may want to consider Joo Siah.

Categories : Steamboat/Hot Pot | Zi Char

Our list of Fish Steamboat places are limited till we explored another place here in North Bridge Road. Nan Hwa Chong Fish Head Steamboat Corner adopt the use of charcoal instead of the ususal gas can operated steamboat pot. It is said that the use of charcoal to fire up the broth gave a smoky flavour and an even heat distribution to the broth itself.

Location is rather prominent as it is located at the traffic junction. However, one thing that one might be worrying if driving would be the parking spaces.

Not long after we settled down, we notice the constant stream of patrons walking into the shop. Everyone who walks in were promptly attended by the server. Most who came in had already made reservation via phone call before hand and they were directed to the air conditioned corner of Nan Hwa Chong.

Seeing this station as the toughest job of all standing in front of the flames ensuring that the charcoal are evenly burn and stuffing them into the every steamboat that comes out from the kitchen.

Supposed to be their recommended egg dish, however we got it served with the middle part burnt. Nevertheless the texture still remains fluffy and taste ordinary with a handful of oysters.

The plate of stirred fried broccoli is my kind of home cook dishes. The light taste of broccoli greens is cooked with carrots, ginger and button mushrooms with minced garlic.

We had chosen the grouper fishboat. The grouper fish comes from the sea-bass family. It is low in fat and cholesterol with firm texture and mild flavour. A healthy choice that does not compromise in taste. Three other types of fish offered will be Pomfret, Song Fish Head and Snapper Fish.

Ingredients include fish, vegetables, seaweed, fried taro, flat fish, white cabbage and grouper fish. Soup is rich and sweet.

While the cloudy soup may be made up by the yam, unlike other places they were done by adding milk to it. If you are wondering about the familiar taste in the stock, its the generous portions of flat fish added to the soup that gave a different taste to it.

Not only that the fried yam added had also elevated the soup taste.

Simply love dabbing the fish meat into this sweet sour and spicy chilli.

If you love traditional fish steamboat with charcoal, Nan Hwa Chong Fish-Head is a very good choice. Not only that, they do have a variety of Cze Char Dishes in the menu for selection too.

Calling all vegetarians! Here's another Korean option for you. If you heard of The Boneless Kitchen and love what they are serving, you will be glad that the people behind Daehwa are the same.

Before we begin our gastronomic korean vegetarian dinner, we learnt that their food is free of MSG and free of five alliums. As a non vegetarian, I'm quite concern being real thirsty after some vegetarian meals and I'm glad that they are taking care of it.

For those who love Korean Cuisine will be familiar with the Army Stew or Budae Jjigae. This comforting stew is definitely one of the popular hot pot dishes in Korea. Suitable for 2 to 4 pax and comes with 2 bowls of rice.

With a balance of spiciness, saltiness and slight sweetness. Being a vegetarian dish, you still get to see luncheon meat and hotdog in the stew but its mocked meat. Other ingredients include cucumber, tofu, noodles, mushrooms, rice cake etc. The initial spicy taste was not very distinct till the broth was refilled at a later stage.

Woot! I love this classic savory dish. The sweet potato noodles is paired with mushrooms and asparagus topped with coriander and sesame seeds. It was flavorful and texture was chewy and springy. Recommended!

Japchae 잡채 - $15

It's not the typical starchy kind of Kimchi Pancake. Tasty when paired with the sauce. However, the circumference of the pancake was charred and hardened, not to my liking, otherwise overall is good.

Also known as the squid rings. Wow! This dish swept my feet off. It's meatless yet taste like one. Don't do without the bean paste that comes along with it.
Ojingo Ring 오징어 - $6

The sinful cheesy bowl of French Fries with Truffle. Definitely worth the sharing the calories as the portion is big. Needless to say, they are generously tossed with grated cheese, mayonnaise and fragrantly served. Bet you cannot stop at just one mouthful.

For those who love Boneless Kitchen and do not want to travel into the Eastern part of Singapore, Daehwa will be a very good Korean vegetarian alternative for those who reside in the West.
