East meets West fusion OK Apr 30, 2013

On the whole, I am impressed by the relatively young chefs at bistro soori as you could never be able to imagine the taste of your food by just merely reading off from the menu. The taste may appear complicated initially but when you try it, you will find that they complement each other.

I guess in fusion cooking, you need to be smart in choosing your ingredients from different parts of the world that are distinct yet still able to complement each other to produce a masterpiece. Bistro Soori did it and I am hoping to see more of such restaurant as it may be the only or strongest category of cuisine that is able to come up with new flavours and excitement. Spent a total of $76 and service was good. GST is already included in the menu and so the bill felt more ‘transparent’. Love this place and wouldn’t mind visiting it again sometime!

Nice Sushi  Smile Apr 30, 2013

This outlet at ION is popular, everytime long queue, and usually have to queue earlier. But the wait is worth it, as the food is good.

I like their Aji (mackerel), their roasted fatty salmon (at the counter), their scallops (the normal-sized one), the eel, the Hirame (flounder) and the Tamago (egg). Go for the fresh sashimi of the season, you won't regret it.

I'm disappointed with their Hamachi, and Ikura though I usually love yellow tail and salmon eggs, but somehow theirs don't fit my taste. Avoid the cooked dishes, stick with the sushis. And generally avoid the cheap promotions, they are cheap for a reason...

Taiwan food in orchard OK Apr 30, 2013
Categories : Taiwanese | Chinese | Restaurant

Had lunch there with my colleagues. Decided to try 5 Little Bears as they just opened at Far East.

The interior is pretty nice and cosy, the ordering system needs a bit of work though. You queue to order and then pay, and wait next to the counter to get your food. Once the kitchen can't keep up with the orders, the queue gets longer and it gets too crowded.

Had the Braised Pork Rice which is quite nice and reasonably priced at $5.90 including a drink. The Honey glazed chicken was quite nice and the fried sweet potato fries is the best i've had in Singapore so far, much nicer that the one you find at Shilin.

Nice Japanese Bento Smile Apr 30, 2013

Categories : Japanese | Steaks and Grills

Went for a department lunch at Nanbantei with colleagues. The place was quite cramped and small, but is nicely furnished.

Ordered the yakitori bento set, the food is pretty nice and the price is reasonable considering that it is a restaurant in Orchard area. Opinions from colleagues who tried other bentos were good as well.

Will definitely go back again with my family.

Thai BBQ Steamboat OK Apr 30, 2013
Categories : Thai | Coffeeshop | Steamboat/Hot Pot

Saw this new Thai stall opposite where i stayed, so decided to go try it for dinner.

Place was relatively empty as it is situated in the food court of an industrial estate. Ordered the Thai BBQ steamboat, food was ok except that the meat are all chicken (or at least most of them are chicken, didn't taste any pork).

Asked if they have any thai dessert but sadly they have none as they are understaff.

Overall reasonably cheap Thai BBQ steamboat. They serve other thai food like tomyam, pad thai too.
