Bak Chor Mee. Cry Dec 20, 2013
Categories : Food Court | Noodles

Another disappointing attempt to have lunch in this food court. I decided to have the XO Bak Chor Mee this time. I wanted Mee Kia and requested to have an additional amount of chilli added. A basic bowl of noodle is priced at $3.80.

I was the only customer there then. The lady that received my order started cooking it. It took her a while to cook it as she stopped for a bit to chat with her fellow colleagues. Then, she continued cooking it but stopped and started chatting again. And, i finally got my order.

It was served with a piece of deep-fried wanton skin and slices of lean meat with a handful of minced meat and some braised mushroom.

First mouthful and i could not taste much of the XO sauce in it. Though requested for extra chilli to be added but i could not taste any spiciness too.

The texture of Mee Kia was a bit too soft to my liking. The bowl of soup that served along was rather bland too.

This disappointing experience shall be the only time here.

Disappointing Ban Mian. Cry Dec 20, 2013
Categories : Food Court | Noodles

It was one of those days that i do not know what to eat and i was happened to be there. I wanted something light so the you mian from this stall seemed to be a top choice.

I ordered a basic bowl of you mian for $3.90. The lady manned this stall smiled at me when she spotted me checking the menu out earlier.

A good portion of you mian served with a handful of minced meat, some stalks of vegetables and ikan belis. There are 2 types of chilli available for selection, the usual red cut chilli and chilli puree.

The texture of noodle was cooked nicely but the broth was rather bland thus almost tasteless. It was rather unbearable so i left quite a bit unfinished.

I was left feeling unsatisfied and disappointed.

This is the new bakery in Ang Mo Central just directly opposite the Coffee Shop where the Tip Top Curry Puff is located.

There was quite a crowd there during lunch. A pretty good selection of cakes displayed nicely in the display fridge. I decided to get a piece of those old fashioned looking cakes and a cheese tart to go.

A piece of simple looking cake in 2 layer made up by 2 different color at $1. At first glance, i would expect the green color to have taste of pandan and the brown color has the taste of chocolate. Both color actually tasted the same and the texture was equally dry with no distinctive taste.

It was nicely decorated by a layer of buttercream with a simple design of cherry on it. The buttercream has got a slight greasy taste that i detested. The sweetness of the jam that used to form the cherry was a bit overpowering.

Cheese Tart at 0.80 cents is a slightly better choice. It has got a well-balanced cream cheese taste in a buttery crust. The blueberry is purely for decoration purpose as it does not have much taste.

Though it tasted alright but it is a really small tart.

I am not likely to go back, at least not for now.

Biscuit Chicken Cutlet Set. Cry Dec 03, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Singaporean | Chinese | Coffeeshop | Curries

I have tried their Curry Chicken as well as Asam Fish and i enjoyed it. I decided to have their Biscuit Chicken Cutlet set this time. Such a set is at $5.50 inclusive of rice.

It was delivered by the friendly Auntie to my table in about 5 minutes. The color did not look too appealing as it was a little too dark.

Seemingly, the chicken cutlet was not fried as a whole piece. I suspected it might have already pre-fried and upon order, it was cut into smaller slices and re-fried it again. They might wanted to serve it hot and to give it the crispiness required but it is definitely not a good idea to slice it up as it would likely to compromise on its texture during the cooking process.

There was not even a bit of juiciness to talk about. It was just dry and tough. It did not have a particular taste on its own. The saving grace is that small bowl of curry sauce given along with the rice. I wish the portion of curry sauce would be slightly generous so i could at least have it with rice too.

The texture of rice was slightly soggy. Though i never like to waste foods but i still left them unfinished.

I guess the owner of the stall should not served something that they would not eat. And, it is highly unlikely they did not know the chicken cutlet was over-fried as it is not difficult to tell from its color and texture.

I would go for their Curry Chicken and Asam Fish but would definitely stay away from their Chicken Cutlet. On a side note, the Western Food stall in the same Coffee Shop served rather nice Fried Chicken Cutlet but their standard is not too consistent.

Disappointing Char Siew.  Cry Nov 26, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Singaporean | Cantonese/Hong Kong | Chinese | Coffeeshop | Chicken Rice | Roasted Meat

There was another 2 other customers right in front of me when i was there for dinner.

One of the customers has got a pretty complicated orders that confused the stall assistant a little. While waiting for that customer to finalise her order, another stall assistant asked me for my order. I wanted the wanton mee for $2.50. I was kept waiting for a bit. Other stall assistant packed it and served to me. I ordered through a different stall assistant and perhaps he did not convey correctly thus the mixed up.

The stall assistant cut open the packet and poured it in a bowl then served it with a bowl of soup.

It was served with quiet a few slices of char siew together with a few stalks of vegetable and 3 pieces of wanton.

The char siew was an absolute disappointment. It tasted so dry and so hard. I guess it has gotta do with the part of meat used to prepare it. It was overdone too as certain part was overly charred to leave an obvious burnt taste.

The general taste was alright though as i could taste the nicely caramelised taste with a slight smoky flavor.

The noodle was nicely cooked to give it the desirable texture with the just right springiness and without the alkaline taste. The wantons were pretty tasty though and it somewhat made up for the disappointment.

This would not likely be my choice if i have others to consider.
