Rojak. OK Dec 17, 2013

The queue right at this stall was one of the longest there. I joined in and waited for about 20 minutes to order.

I decided to go with the smallest portion at $3 though there are also the $4 and $5 available for selection. I waited for another 10 minutes after i placed my order before getting it. The possible reason for such a wait might be due to the preparation of some orders that placed in advance.

The portion was rather decent for $3. It consists of freshly grilled tau pok and you tiao with fresh tasting ingredients like turnips, cucumber and bean sprouts.

It was mixed well with pretty good quality prawn paste then sprinkled with a good amount of grounded peanuts just before served. It tasted generally nice but not quite good enough to worth the wait as well as for a return visit.

Bak Chor Mee. OK Dec 16, 2013

Categories : Hawker Centre | Noodles

I was first greeted by the friendly Uncle when i approached the stall. He recommended their signature Punggol Noodle for only $2.50.

It was generally a bowl of mee kia served with a handful of minced meat with slices of fishcake together with braised mushroom to serve. It tasted just like the usual bak chor mee. I would think the portion was pretty decent and worth it for the price.

The nicely cooked mee kia has got a desired springiness with no alkaline taste that i detested and it tasted good when tossed well with the sauce underneath. The level of spiciness was just right though i requested for an extra amount to be added. Bits of bean sprouts added to give it a delightful touch. There are plenty of fried pork lards available for self-service. Though sinful but a good way to enhance its general taste.

A decent eat if you happen to be in this food centre. I would be keen to try their handmade meatballs if i happen to be there again.

A simple lunch. OK Dec 16, 2013

This seems to be a rather popular stall during lunch in this food centre. I wanted something light so this happened to be an obvious choice for me. I placed the order and given my table then waited at the table. I waited for about 15 minutes before the Uncle delivered it. The bowl of ban mian was reasonably priced at $3.

It was served with ingredients like minced meat, vegetable, egg and topped with ikan belis to serve.

The soup was pretty plain though.

The texture and taste of the handmade noodle did not fare too outstandingly but a good choice nonetheless if you are looking for a simple lunch and do not mind waiting for a bit.

Chinese Chive Dumplings.  OK Dec 05, 2013

Categories : Sichuan | Hawker Centre | Noodles

This is one of the newest stalls in this food centre. This stall offers different types of Sze Chuan dishes.

There was a good range of the typical Sze Chuan dishes available for selection. I am not familiar with most of those dishes and most are expected to be quite spicy due to the heavy application of the chilli oil.

The safest selection has to be the Chive Dumpling. It came in 10 pieces for $4. The Auntie threw those dumplings into a pot of hot water and left it there while she attended to another customer wanting to take away some of those dishes. The Auntie politely informed me that the skin of those dumplings was slightly thicker so it required a longer cooking time.

Then, the Auntie slowly picking up a piece at a time from the pot of water using a pair of long wooden chopsticks. She then ladled some water from the same pot into the bowl and placed it on the tray to serve.

She then placed a bowl of sauce on the tray too. I guess she could tell that i am probably not familiar so she explained that the dipping sauce made up of chilli and vinegar.

The dumpling has got a rather thick skin and a generous amount of chive filling. I could not quite get used to the overpowering taste of the chive initially but accepted it subsequently.

It actually tasted slightly better when have it with the dipping sauce. The level of spiciness must have been adjusted to suit the taste bud of locals as it did not taste as spicy as expected but the vinegar taste was a bit too overwhelmed.

I happened to bite on something hard in one of those dumplings. It would fared much better if this did not happen.

It was an interesting experience though.

This is the new bakery in Ang Mo Central just directly opposite the Coffee Shop where the Tip Top Curry Puff is located.

There was quite a crowd there during lunch. A pretty good selection of cakes displayed nicely in the display fridge. I decided to get a piece of those old fashioned looking cakes and a cheese tart to go.

A piece of simple looking cake in 2 layer made up by 2 different color at $1. At first glance, i would expect the green color to have taste of pandan and the brown color has the taste of chocolate. Both color actually tasted the same and the texture was equally dry with no distinctive taste.

It was nicely decorated by a layer of buttercream with a simple design of cherry on it. The buttercream has got a slight greasy taste that i detested. The sweetness of the jam that used to form the cherry was a bit overpowering.

Cheese Tart at 0.80 cents is a slightly better choice. It has got a well-balanced cream cheese taste in a buttery crust. The blueberry is purely for decoration purpose as it does not have much taste.

Though it tasted alright but it is a really small tart.

I am not likely to go back, at least not for now.
