Grilled Picante Chicken. Smile Nov 26, 2013

Categories : Coffeeshop | Steaks and Grills

This is one of the newest stalls that just moved in after the recent renovation of this coffee shop.

I was there on a Saturday for dinner.

For a big fan of Chicken Chop, i went for Grilled Picante Chicken for $6.50. I was asked to select 2 side dishes. There are cold and hot side dishes for selection. The selection under the cold side dishes are Coleslaw, Garden Salad, Cold Pasta and Potato Salad. As for the hot side dishes are Straight Cut Fries, Buttered Sweet Corn, Mashed Potato and Broiled Broccolis & Carrot. I wanted Coleslaw and Potato Salad.

I paid up and given a number tag. I proceeded to wait at the table and it was served by the same elderly Uncle in about 15 minutes.

A piece of nicely grilled chicken chop was served with a good portion of potato salad and coleslaw.

The grilled chicken was well-marinated with Mexican seasoning then grilled it well to give it the full flavor.

The Chicken Chop was slightly charred but tasted tender and flavorful to demonstrate the perfect execution during the cooking process. It tasted good to eat it on its own without the usual chilli and the tomato sauce.

The texture was somewhat compromised by its thickness as it was too thinly sliced to give it the desirable juiciness.

The potato salad consists of boiled potatoes and slices of cucumber. The dressing did not have much eggy taste nor a distinctive taste of mayonnaise. It tasted a little strange. The slices of cucumber were soggy with no crunchiness thus it has no effect to enhance the taste nor the texture further.

The coleslaw is a better choice than the potato salad. The chopped cabbage and carrot were nicely mixed with the mayonnaise based dressing to give it the refreshing taste.

Though not amongst the best Chicken Chop that i have tried so far but this is a promising stall that i would not mind coming back since it's within walking distance from my house.

Why the queue? OK Nov 25, 2013

Categories : Cantonese/Hong Kong | Hawker Centre | Chicken Rice | Roasted Meat

I had the chicken rice once but i did not get too impressed then.

I happened to be there for lunch last Saturday. There was a queue of about 10 people right in front of this stall. I decided to give it another try so i joined in the queue and waited for about 15 minutes before i gotta order. I wanted Roasted Chicken Rice with liver added. I requested to have Chicken Drumstick for an additional 0.50 cents. I paid a total of $3.50. It was served with bits of achar and a bowl of soup.

A substantial portion of rice was served with a good portion of deboned chicken drumstick and liver. I took a mouthful of rice. The texture of the rice was slightly dry with no distinctive taste of chicken broth. It tasted as good as plain rice perhaps that explained why the texture was not even a slightly greasy but it was rather grainy though.

The roasted chicken did not fare too impressively as well though it was deep-fried well to achieve the delightful tenderness of the meat. Apart of the slightly greasiness, the skin tasted quite flavorful.

The liver was nicely poached then sliced it in thick pieces to give it the desirable texture. The achar was a good addition to complement the meal nicely.

The flavourful soup served with a piece of sweetcorn in it and garnished with bits of chopped spring onion.

I could not quite understand the reason behind such a queue as the taste of the chicken rice served is not outstanding despite those nomination and awards presented on the front of their stall. And, there is actually a better tasting chicken rice stall in this food centre with an equally or a longer queue and that stall would be a must preferred choice for me.

I travel quite often for work and i have often been asked what local food do i miss the most when i am away from Singapore. During those days, fried carrot cake is often in my mind.

I have always been craving for a simple plate of fried carrot cake using a good amount of sweet dark sauce together with extra preserved radish, extra chilli to give a well-balanced taste of sweetness and saltiness that often left a lingering fragrance on the taste buds. It has always been the perfect choice for breakfast and even lunch.

I have recently chanced upon a new fried carrot cake stall a stone's throw away from house. I happened to be there for an early lunch then walked past a table and spotted a plate of beautifully fried black carrot cake there. I looked around and spotted this stall.

I was given the selection of $2.50, $3 and $4 for the black and the white version. I went for the $2.50 black fried carrot cake. As i was the other customer then so i got my plate of fried carrot cake within minutes.

I would think the portion was a bit too little for $2.50 but the generous amount of egg added somewhat made up for it. It was nicely pan-fried to give it a slight crispiness without compromising the texture of those pieces of unevenly cut carrot cake. I could distinctly taste bits of preserved radish added to enhance its overall flavor. The carrot cake used is probably factory made as i saw rolls of them stacking up right at the stall.

This might not be the best tasting fried carrot cake that i ever eaten but its standard is good enough to satisfy a crave temporarily.

Braised Delight. Smile Nov 24, 2013

Categories : Chinese | Hawker Centre

This stall is manned by an elderly couple selling traditional teochew delicacies like Pig Trotter's Jelly (猪脚冻) and Shark's Meat (白牙沙鱼肉) as well as Braised Delight (自制卤味). They are even awarded an impressive 6 chopsticks under the category of 'Die Die Must Try' by Makansutra.

These are the traditional Teochew delicacies that are quickly disappearing these days. Though i am a Hokkien but i do appreciate such traditional delicacies that are not commonly available particularly from a stall at food centre.

The Pig Trotter's Jelly and the Shark's Meat are actually served cold with homemade dipping sauce. As i just had my lunch and i probably could not take away those so i left with their Braised Delight to consider. All the items are in the selection of $5, $8 and $10.

I decided to take away $5 portion of the Braised Delight and would have to come back for the highly recommended Pig Trotter's Jelly and Shark's Meat another day.

The Braised Delight consisting of braised pork belly, braised large intestine, braised tau kwa, braised tau pok and braised egg that commonly available at those Kway Chap stalls.

A rather good quality soya sauce was probably used to prepare the dish. The sauce was robust, fragrant and yet a well-balanced taste of sweetness and saltiness. And, it left a lingering fragrance on the taste buds.

My favourite has to be the braised intestine. It was clean thoroughly to omit the strange taste before braised well to give it the right texture. This is a simple dish that has done well. It actually tasted much better than some of those at most Kway Chap stalls.

The next favourite has to be the braised pork belly. The pork belly has got a good balance of the fat and the lean proportion. It was then braised perfectly to give it the desired texture. I liked how it was sliced in big and chunky pieces to give it a greater satisfaction.

The braised egg, braised tau kwa and braised tau pok are equally addictive. A pretty good alternative to take away and have it just for snack or to go with lunch and dinner at home.

Yong Tau Foo OK Nov 23, 2013

Categories : Hakka | Hawker Centre

This is one of the few surviving stalls located at the level 1 of this food centre. The food centre was extremely quiet during lunch on a weekday with more closed down stalls at this level. This particular stall is hidden away right at a corner of this food centre.

The choices of Yong Tau Foo items are rather limited but given this is one of the few stalls left so not too bad a choice. The minimum selection has to be 7 pieces as indicated on their menu board. I picked exactly 7 items including the tau kwa with fish paste, ngor hiang, tau pok, fish cake and so on. I wanted the thin bee hoon and added 0.60 cents for laksa gravy.

I was asked for my table number which i did not take notice so i pointed to some tables located a little further from the stall to the lady. It was served by the same lady in less than 5 minutes to my table. I was charged a total of $4.20.

It's a little pricey as most of the items selected were the usual items for Yong Tau Foo.

A good portion of thin bee hoon was given though. I was a bit skeptical of its taste given the unappealing presentation. Apparently, the gravy tasted a little nicer than expected with quite a distinctive taste of coconut milk and a pretty mild level of spiciness. The spoonful of sambal chilli given did not have an effect to enhance its taste further. It was served with a handful of beansprouts and with cockles added.

The bee hoon was cooked pretty nicely to give it the desired texture. It tasted pleasantly nice when eaten with the laksa gravy. Most of the items tasted mediocre and the fried ngor hiang was the most preferred item. The tau kwa tasted a little stale with a strange taste.

Though not the worst experience but i doubt i am keen to go back for more.
